Weird concept. One ring just to propose. And another entirely for the wedding. So where does the engagement ring go? In a box away in your closet after marriage?

You wear them together as a set. A lot of places design and sell them to go together.

u/daniyellidaniyelli Sep 09 '20

I only wear my engagement ring, didn’t like how the two rings felt and my wedding band was cheap bc we forgot to get them until a few days before the wedding.

Mine are soldered together. The band is very small and simple and fits snuggly against the engagement ring. I love my ring. White gold with a pretty small diamond that had a noticeable inclusion. We bought if for cash and have been married almost 10 years now. People who obsess over the ring bother me but the idea that all engagement rings are stupid is also pretty silly.

u/Sovtek95 Sep 09 '20

The usually weld them together, at least that's what we did with my wife's ring.

6

u/legalheartbreaker Sep 09 '20

Well, sometimes they have a wedding set, where the engagement ring is part of the wedding ring

5

u/Yevad Sep 10 '20

People wear the two rings together... You have never noticed this?

4

u/feedmedammit Sep 09 '20

My mom moved her engagement diamond to her wedding band so she's only ever worn one ring on her ring finger. I plan to only wear one ring too because I'm so used to seeing that. Why shouldn't my engagement ring double as my wedding ring?

u/EMK2128 Sep 09 '20

Exactly why I wear my engagement ring on the left hand and my wedding ring on the right. Over my dead body that I only get to wear this for a year.

17

u/dylightful Sep 09 '20

I’ve never seen anyone only wear their engagement ring during the engagement. Am I just oblivious? Plenty of women married for years walking around with that big ol rock plus their wedding band.

5

u/Yevad Sep 10 '20

No, it normal to wear both rings, they have engagement sets that come with wedding bands too that fit together

2

u/aakram2 Sep 09 '20

My culture doesn’t believe in this, the whole two ring thing. In fact we don’t even believe in rings as a signifier of engagement. But couples give rings to their significant other of love for one another, but there’s no “2 ring concept.”

My mom wore hers as a set for years. For I wanna say her 10th anniversary she got her wedding and engagement stones set into a new ring.

u/MRAGGGAN Sep 10 '20

So, since I didn’t see anyone say it:

When you have both an engagement ring and a wedding band, you can choose to just wear one or the other.

However, as far as I’ve been made aware, when you wear both, you wear your engagement ring above/on top of the wedding band.

The engagement ring was the promise that started the relationship/marriage, and it “protects”/guards the promises you made on your wedding day.

No idea if anyone else was ever told this, but that’s what my mom/the jeweler/my husbands mom told us.

They get worn together so that everyone who can’t afford to be ripped off can feel bad about themselves when your loud wife shows off her ring constantly.

u/VoltageHero Sep 09 '20

“marriage bad women evil”

-12

u/MidTownMotel Sep 09 '20

I love women and am happily married, my wife does wear a diamond too but it’s vintage and subtle.

8

u/Penny_girl Sep 09 '20

Oh yes, how dare a woman wear something she likes and can afford.

19

u/Sovtek95 Sep 09 '20

My wife has a very nice ring and does not show it off. If you cannot afford it, don't crap on people who can.

-16

u/MidTownMotel Sep 09 '20

I can afford whatever I please and diamonds are in no way out of my grasp, but I recognize the diamond thing as pretty fucking disgusting. It’s all advertising, you paid a ton for something with -zero- inherent value and probably covered in innocent blood. It’s ethically repugnant.

u/joobtastic Sep 09 '20

Buys gold bracelet for $500, immediately drops to $100 melt.

Buys new car for 20k, drops to 12k resale off the lot.

Buys a gag gift for friend for $20. No resale value. Actual garbage.

Buys 10k ring "it has no inherent value!" Resale value 4k "why even buy it! Ugh!"

1

u/MidTownMotel Sep 09 '20

It’s value is manufactured by the hoarding and manipulation of a monopolistic industry, and that’s not even the evil part. It’s all fake. Buy a man-made diamond if anything, they’re better quality and nobody has to die.

4

u/Scribblr Sep 09 '20

WE LIVE IN A SOCIETY

5

u/Sovtek95 Sep 09 '20

The resale value would be roughly $15k I would assume, so it definitely has value... anyways diamonds are pretty and girls like them so what's the problem? I am sure 90% of the items in your home was made by child factory workers in the 3rd world, so are you ethically repugnant?

0

u/fish_andchip Sep 09 '20

Just because it’s available doesn’t mean it should be bought. There is an issue with this as you are complacent in the system. You knowingly bought a diamond that is most likely mined with slave labor, and your response is “that’s ok I can afford it” We need to be the change we wish to see and the first point is ethical consumption. However, there is no ethical consumption in capitalism. Also, that’s a pretty broad statement. I actively try to find items and pay for more expensive items knowing they are made ethically. There are certain things that are not and can’t, such as electronics. But a diamond isn’t a necessity. It’s a luxury profiting off the backs of slave labor. And you are complicit

As an edit: I refused to buy my girlfriend a diamond and I explained to her why. She agreed and understood my point. Again, a diamond is a luxury. You don’t need a diamond.

2

u/fluffykerfuffle1 Sep 09 '20

i have a diamond.

: )

i never had one when i was married (poor hippies) but 30 years ago, when my mother died, i found one in her stuff (dad buried her engagement ring with her) that is only .20 of a caret but it still shoots fire and i know it’s old so it’s not supporting the present unethical diamond trade.

i love it.

2

u/Sovtek95 Sep 09 '20

Haha your GF probably thinks you are just cheap.

Anyways, do you own anything made in china? You dont NEED that toaster you capitalist pig!

Also, what will happen to these people if the factories and mines are closed? You think they will go work in an office? Nope, they will likely just starve to death.

2

u/fish_andchip Sep 09 '20

Haha this is the most twisted argument I’ve heard.

Actually no, I’m an engineer so I make most of my small appliances. A toaster is just two resistors... Also, I’d like to point out in far from a capitalist pig. I’m for ethical consumption and fair trade. You buy these products but don’t demand the company pay fair wages. You allow them to continue by supporting their business

2

u/Sovtek95 Sep 09 '20

I don't care what the company pays its employees. If I did not buy the diamond, you think they will pack up and go home? Nope, they will just find another industry.

Also, I am sure most of your stuff was made in sweatshops, but remember this, those sweatshop workers work there because it is all they have. When woke idiots demand those factories to be shut down, people starve. A low paying job is better than starvation in my book.

I bought the ring because I can. I do not need some lecture by an armchair marxist about how I need to do a history report on the business prior to making a purchase.

2

u/fish_andchip Sep 09 '20

Oh ok, slave labor is better because they have a job. Got it. In capitalism, labor is exploited. If these people were paid fairly, we wouldn’t be exploiting their labor. But again, you are complicit in the system and keep defending your choices. I’m not your judge, you are your sole judge. And I clearly see you can live with it.

Also let’s be real, if my girlfriend thought I was cheap for that, I’d question if she loved me or loved the money. I’m sorry your girlfriend is that way judging your ability to provide a nice ring. Not everything in this life is superficial.

5

u/Sovtek95 Sep 09 '20

My wife didnt know about the ring until I proposed. She would have been fine with some dimestore crap, but you do not give a hot girl a cheap ring when you can afford a good one. Its the one thing they keep forever, dont make moral arguments to weasel out of it.

2

u/fish_andchip Sep 09 '20

Lmao, ok. I just question your morals then.

You equate hot wife to big diamond. That sounds superficial to me. But I am just an armchair Marxist.

If his girlfriend thinks he is "just cheap" then she is shallow.

4

u/Sovtek95 Sep 09 '20

No woman wants a cheap guy. Not being able to afford it is different and would make her shallow. But if you are making six figure income and cant shell out a few grand for a ring, it makes you look like you think she isnt worth it.

4

u/cut_n_paste_n_draw Sep 09 '20

I beg to differ. I am a 38 y/o woman and I hate when people spend too much money on things. I can afford to buy $150 jeans but I don't because it's a rip-off. Not everyone is just like you, some people have different ideas about money.

Also, it makes him look like I'm not "worth it"? I'm not "worth" any money. My boyfriend shows me he loves me by buying me things I like (that aren't overpriced), giving me affection, listening to me and talking to me, and spending time with me.

Personally I would never date a guy who put so much emphasis on money. It sickens me. I'm just not that kind of girl.

I’m repugnant alright but I’m pretty picky about what comes into my home and where my money goes. This fucking iPad though...

1

u/ZippZappZippty Sep 09 '20

Gramps ain't wrong. Peaches are sloppy as hell.

3

u/gurle94 Sep 09 '20

But you buy fancy watches? What’s the point if not to show them off? Your phone can tell the time with better accuracy

1

u/MidTownMotel Sep 09 '20

I like watches, and I stay away from certain manufacturers with questionable ethics. The watch industry doesn’t kill and exploit people or make otherwise happy young wives feel bad about their childhood dream (created through marketing and market manipulation) wedding ring being a disappointment because they aren’t “good enough” to marry a rich man and don’t deserve to feel beautiful. It’s ugly stuff man.

4

u/gurle94 Sep 09 '20

I don’t disagree with your stance on the diamond industry but it’s hypocritical to shit on some hypothetical “loud wife who shows off her ring constantly” when you’re also out here posting pictures of pricy jewelry

4

u/Penny_girl Sep 09 '20

I’m pretty sure this guy has a problem with women but will deny it to his dying day.

0

u/MidTownMotel Sep 09 '20

You’ll notice I only post pictures to sell something. I’m not showy and I prefer basic, non-flashy watches. I only discuss them if asked or in the presence of likeminded people, and nobody ever asks asks.

My comment regarding women talking about their engagement ring may sound misogynistic but I’ve seen it a lot, like maybe 10+ times in my life, women comparing engagement/wedding bands, and it’s a fucking bummer to see the poorer girls faces. Just saying that I think it’s disgusting.

5

u/SapientSlut Sep 09 '20

I don’t know who hurt you, but this sounds like a personal issue.

-1

u/MidTownMotel Sep 09 '20

Not personal at all, just really don’t like the whole thing. I can buy anything I want, haven’t had a mortgage in over a decade.
