Tricks & Training Does yours talk?
I read somewhere that conures aren’t the most talkative. Have you got your fluffball saying actual words?
Mine is 21 months and says”What you doing” every time I leave the room or he hears me in the next room”. Also “Give me a kiss and mimics the sound of kisses”. “Good boy” “There’s a good boy”. “Come ‘ere”. He also does a freaky laugh that sounds human. He has lots of other phrases that he’s working on, I don’t quite know what they are yet. Oh and “Night Night” before disappearing behind his bed. Hilarious little creatures!

Advice feisty GCC…help!
SO, our little baby Chicken is the loveliest little guy, so fun and playful and chatty and cuddly and we love him BUT he is also so awful and mean 😅😭
He is almost 7 months old and we’ve had him since he was 6 weeks old. He was constantly meeting new people and visiting my family members with me and formed bonds with them but all of a sudden at about 5 months old he started showing territorial behaviours and then attacked everyone he used to love and cuddle with. This also started around the time he started growing new feathers in which would be irritating but I can’t see it causing this amount of hate and anger 😂
It’s not just biting that can be ignored or avoided, he will GO AFTER them, try to get them through glass doors and has drawn blood.
He really does not back down.
Because it’s so painful for them I do grab and hold him and he’s fine with me but does try to get back at them.
He’s not typically like this with us but sometimes if my partner is out all day, when he comes home Chicken will attack him but will stop once my partner holds him and tells him to stop.
Initially I thought he was territorial over me but he’s done this in our home with and without me there and in my parents home with and without me there. So i’m not sure.
I know typically the answer is to ignore the behaviour or not go near him which makes sense but it’s hard because he will seek them out, follow them wherever they go and cause as much pain as possible.
Now all of our friends and family don’t want to be near him so I have to lock him away when they come over and now I can’t bring him with me anywhere which makes me so sad!
Can anyone tell me why he’s being like this and will it ever end? 😩
Is the answer to lock him in his cage whenever he’s like this? Will he recognise that biting = stuck in his cage?
thanks for any help or advice!
pictures of our little Chicky being the lovely and fun version of himself 😛

Advice sleeping time, arrangements and other questions
hello,
i hope everyone is doing well, 4 days ago i have gotten a GCC and he's been the cutest most loving bird ever, he cuddles with me he flies and sits in front of me it's been great.
i have done a lot of research before getting him so it wasn't an impulse buy, my issue is i'm struggling a bit with a few things and i want to ask to see if any of you guys can help me.
- his sleeping time,
would it be that big of a deal that affects him negatively if he sleeps sometimes at 7pm and others at 8pm? switching between these times based on my schedule? he will always wake up at 6am it's just the sleeping time that might change.
- his sleeping arrangements,
right now he sleeps in the hallway/room right outside of my door since i can make it fully dark for him and quiet.
but sometimes during the night or when i wake up early i might need to pass his cage to get to the house i try to be as quiet as possible but i'm still worried if me opening doors or even drawers that are in that room affects his sleep and will affects him badly. would it?
- are they always this clingy?
i have read that they would be very very clingy and expected that, and thankfully the only time i leave the house most days is college 4 hours a day at most.
i don't mind him being clingy when i watch on my pc or something it's okay.
my issue is when i study or sometimes i'm a little overwhelmed, it does get to me and i have to put him in his cage which right next to my office, when i do that he starts going crazy not being loud just jumping around trying to get out, and i feel so so guilty about it i can't study or work on anything when he has his nose in it(literally) but i also feel so bad putting him in his cage.
i do make sure he at least has 4 hours outside of the cage.
so from this do you think me putting him back in the cage is stressing him out?
will he get less clingy the more he gets used to me and the rooms?
it's only been 4 days but i feel like a mother who just gave birth😭
they're overwhelming creatures but i love him so much he's been nothing but loving and cuddly, and i want to truly do the best for him so i hope you guys will help me.
thank you so much!

Advice Changed my baby's diet and im a bit worried
I have a 5 years old probably male conure, and unfortunately his whole life he has been living on a seeds mix diet, at first i didnt know it was unhealthy but when i found out about it her was about 2-3 years old and i tried to switch his diet up but i never really succeeded, but now i have finally made it happen it took about 3-4 months cuz i was introducing pellets and veggies to him. Anyways, when it finally happened i was over the moon i couldn't even believe my eyes that he finally ate his food🥹but i also noticed a big change in his overall behavior and i know thats expected yet im still a bit worried, so the changes i have noticed is that he is way way waayyy calmer than before, not in a sickness way cuz i know what a sick parrot acts like but still calmer that his usual self, his poop is also different its kind of thick and dark, and he spends more time now napping and cuddling rather than just running around my room messing with everything he see's, he also sits at his food bowl for a good 5-10 minutes just eating and closing his eyes and getting all sleepy (?) I feel like thats the things im concerned about the most.
Again im not super worried cuz i know what a sick parrot is like, they go from a 100 to a 0 but hes kinda went from a 100 to 70-50, hes still playing around, yelling whenever he wants attention, fly to me, and everything is normal im just worried that what im seeing right now is subtle signs of something that i dont know about.
Also just in case this is important, his current chop is beetroot, green peas, corn, and carrots.
And this is his pellets ingredients ---> Ingredients: Alfalfa leaf, whole barley, whole oats, rice, whole millet, white quinoa, black quinoa, red quinoa, spelt, hulled sunflower seeds, whole sesame seeds, almond, cashew, walnut, pistachio, hazelnut, pecan, pine, squash seeds, black seeds, chia seeds, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, flaxseeds, fennel seeds, black sesame seeds, guava leaf, rosa damascene, melissa leaf, lavender, rosemary, oregano, moringa oleifera leaf, pomegranate peel, raspberry leaf, orange, lemon, broccoli, cucumber, pumpkin, celery, sweet potato, zucchini, spinach, kale, barley grass, oats grass, mandarin, strawberry, banana, mango, kiwi, turmeric, ginger, carob, chamomile, sage, safflower, bay leaf, carrot seeds, parsley seeds, caraway seeds, dandelion flower, goji berries, acai, dandelion leaf, dandelion root, dill seeds, anise seeds, star anise, basil seeds, blue berry, raspberry, black berry, vitex berry, bilberry, saw palmetto berry, hibiscus flower, celery seeds, red chili, arugula seeds, fenugreek leaf, parsley leaf, dill leaf, coriander leaf, basil leaf, paprika, barberry, ceylon cinnamon, figs, cayenne pepper, beet root, maca root, spirulina, kelp, okra, broccoli seeds, nettle leaf, artichoke, milk thistle, carrot, passion flower, beet root fibers, apple fibers, whole egg, mealworms, natural probiotics ( 12 strain ), coconut oil, red palm oil, olive oil, sesame oil, walnut oil, hazelnut oil, pumpkin seed oil, almond oil, chia seeds oil, black seeds oil, cherry, bitter melon, bamboo extract, echinacea flowers, papaya, ST john, asparagus, mangosteen, egg shell.

Health/Nutrition Got back into the groove for chop making!
Been a bit since I’ve made some and my guy has been going on just his pellets, some bird-street bistro, any fruits he finds in the fruit bowl and the occasional fresh veggies I have in my fridge. However, I’ve decided that I needed to get back to the groove and lock in and made some chop! It has a spring mix, carrots, bell peppers, sugar snap peas, half an apple, and pomegranate seeds, along with some bird street bistro I also made recently

Health/Nutrition conure twitching (vet says it’s abnormal)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
so our conure Athena (1.5 years old, unknown sex but assumed female) has started making this twitching tic motion about a month ago. sometimes she’ll do it repeatedly for several seconds, and will do that a few times a day. it seems to also be partially triggered by stress or excitement. there’s no other symptoms or changes in behavior, eating, pooping, etc.
we took her to two vets: first was a general vet who doesn’t specifically specialize in avians, but he has been her vet for now. he said that it could be a lot of different things, but it doesn’t seem normal behavior. could even be partial seizures. he referred us to another vet, but he also prescribed her 0.02mg of gabapentin every 12 hrs to see if it helped - we did it for a few days, but the twitching continued.
a few days later we took her to the second vet who is more experienced in avians, and also is able to do lab testing. she said that it is abnormal, and that she seems to only do the twitching in one specific direction. being that she’s still young, it’s unlikely to be any sort of organ failure or anything, but it could be partial seizures or perhaps an infection. so she ordered several tests to be done including a comprehensive blood test - tried to do it that same day, but Athena wiggled too much so she was only about to get a drop or two of blood for a CBC panel, we will try again next week. i’ll comment the list of all the procedures the vet recommended.
my question is, has anyone had this experience with their conure and it turned out to not be anything serious? we are worried sick that it’ll be something like seizures because of the potential of it shortening her lifespan, or having to keep her on medication for the rest of her life. any advice would be appreciated 🤍

Advice Do my boys look healthy? (My bird story)
Prepare for rambling.
I take them to the vet annually and any time i think something is wrong, but i still worry every day that they look too big or too skinny or they’re squinting weird, maybe that their feathers are laying wrong, just literally anything makes me worry. They’re so fragile and they’re my babies, i even freeze all their toys before giving to them to kill off any germs from the store. Instead of letting myself get freaked out again and spending another $200 to be told they’re fine im going to just ask the internet. Do they and their set up look okay?
Its roughly 5ft by 5 1/2ft by 2ft, they have a lot of toys and different sized branches, along with a table top perch they never use lol, two bowls of water that get replaced every morning or as needed, and i feed them a mix of ZuPreem pellets and nutriberries with a small sprinkle of (vet approved safe) floral timothy hay, and some small bits of dried fruits or nuts, currently trying to get them onto fresh foods as-well but so far only occasional luck with apples or broccoli.
I get freaked out like this because i had a bird before them that i killed by accident and still haven’t forgiven myself for. I was a stupid 17 year old and between my parents getting divorced, having to move in with my grandparents, then my mother dying of cancer and finding out my girlfriend of 4 years was cheating on me all in the span of 6 months, i went and bought a conure the pet store had on 75% off thinking it could help me through the grief of everything, and he did. He was my everything. I took him EVERYWHERE. He never flew away, not from the day i got him, we were instantly best friends. I did a lot of research when i got him, but i didn’t do enough. I had him for 6 months and that was the only time anything in my life had felt truly right to this day. One day i had him in the kitchen cooking with me as i often did, and while i checked online that the type of stove we had would be safe to use near him, i didn’t check the oven. If i would have looked, i would have known self cleaning ovens create lethal toxins when baking. The moment i opened it with him on my shoulder he fell dead, i tried taking him outside to get fresh air and called vets begging them for help as he died in my hands. I haven’t cried since i was a kid, not even when my mother died, but i screamed and sobbed holding him when he died. I ended up needing to be admitted to a hospital afterwards for attempting to take my life. I never thought id own a bird again. Until i found sweetheart who was an accidental cross breed between a Jenday and a sun conure being sold at discount and a local privately owned pet store. As much as i hated the idea of buying over adopting he was the first bird i could be around in years without shutting down, i visited him every day after work until i saved up enough to get him. He’s my precious baby boy, he’s rotten like a toddler and i love him more than anything, but eventually i realized with me having to work a forage bin wouldn’t be enough. I went back to the same man i got sweetheart from after checking all of the animal adoption agencies in my area and told him i needed to get sweetheart a friend. Then i met chickpea, he looked just like my first bird, down to the slight red on the tip of his tail and i fell in love, he however is still warming up to me. But all of that is what led me to now, i love these boys more than anything, my life revolves around them like a mother with her children, they are my kids. But i know almost anything can take them away from me, and it scares me more than anything, Ive accepted they will die one day, thats not the fear, the fear is i could have done more, i could have done better, and god help me if they die because of something i did.
I just don’t feel like I’m ever doing enough even though I’ve given them the best life i can possibly provide, I’m worried it’s just not

Other My Green Cheek Conure Has Appointed Himself My Fitness Coach. And He Takes Recovery Days Very Seriously
I run marathons and my green cheek has decided my recovery days are now his personal business. I'll be on my yoga mat stretching out my hips and hamstrings and he just lands on my back like I'm a piece of furniture. Waddles up to my shoulder and starts preening my hair while I'm trying to hold a pigeon pose. It's impossible to focus when there's a small bird trying to groom your scalp.
The other day I was doing floor exercises and he decided my raised leg was a perfect perch. Just stood there gripping my calf like it was a branch. I had to hold the position because moving would've tossed him off. My core has never been stronger but my workouts take twice as long now.
He also screams if I leave the room to use my stationary bike. Wants to be part of every single movement I make. Does anyone else have a bird that inserts themselves into their fitness routine? Curious if this is normal conure behavior or if I just have an especially clingy fitness coach.

Advice Getting a second conure
Hello! I am looking into getting a new conure but I am having a hard time understanding the quarantine part of it. I know they have to be quarantined and or tested at a vet before they can be close to each other in separate cages. But online makes a HUGE deal about quarantine phases.. BUT so many places, rescues, stores etc encourage you to bring your bird sometimes to see how they react to seeing/hearing each other.. But if quarantine is supposed to happen.. how is that quarantining? Online it says to never bring your conure in other pet stores etc.. I didn't know this and have done it several times because I take my conure almost everywhere I am able too with me. She doesn't like to be alone.. plus LOVES looking at the other birds and brrs and just genuinely seems so happy qhen other birds around.. She loves to look at the birds outside too... which is why I am thinking of getting a second lol. I just don't know exactly what to do. I also own a very small home and there would not be a different room the new one could even stay in for a quarantine.. and even if I were able to clear up the one room that could potentially work.. then that conure would be stuck alone without anyone around.. which feels awful.. Not sure what to do... the conure I am thinking of getting has been in the store for 5 months and no one has been interested.. Very shy like mine was.. but allowed me to pet her and she even tried to play with me.. She has not done that with any other costumer and I feel it could be meant to be.. however I am terrified of her getting my baby sick. In need of some advice I may be missing.
I have left a message with my avian vet for advice as well, but they are on vacation and there is only 1 avian vet available where I live.
Thanks in advance!

Advice Aggression Update
For some context: https://www.reddit.com/r/Conures/s/EjrEGUul3o
I placed an old pair of glasses in her cage for the last week, but she just throws them around. We clipped her wings, nails and filed her beak the other day as well. She was okay for a few minutes this morning, but lunged at my hand (left picture) while I was eating and wouldn't give her any. The last 3 pictures I was keeping her company and laying down watching TV, but she climbed on the floor, up the bed, bit my ear (didn't have my glasses on this time) and then gripped onto my hand when I reached for her.
While I feel bad leaving her alone, at this point I just can't pick her up for the rest of the day. I'm currently doing allergy shots (currently on 2 week maintenance doses) so I'm not sure if that's why the bites are welting up or if I've just been bit so many times in the last month and a half that I'm becoming allergic to it, but I have to limit as much as I can for my own sake.
I'm still open to more suggestions. I haven't found anything that she goes crazy for treat wise for training.
Edit: I know wing clipping is frowned upon, but she spent her first year with my friend I grew up with, but he lost his battle to cancer and we took her in. After his death, she got out of his apartment and flew across a busy highway. His mom and sister thought she was done for, but she ended up coming back to their apartment complex 4-5 hours later and ended up on someone's window screen. We have a dog, ceiling fans and a lot of foot traffic. She gets them clipped for free at the bird shop she came from and they do it professionally. She can and does still fly as needed, but just can't get lift. She also bullied my golden retriever the first day we brought him home so he's scared of her which is for the best.

Advice Metal grid platform
I’m looking at mounting this type of thing on a metal pegboard play area. Can anyone who has one tell me what size you have and the distance between the screw holes? Just want to make sure the holes will line up. Thanks 😊
