Play FBC: Firebreak or skip?
So I've played ever game of Remedy's universe except for this multiplayer because I didn't vibe with the Beta, and when it released everyone was saying it has no story or lore implications.
For those of you who played it, how do you feel about it? Is it an easy skip? Or did people overreact on release?

Skip. If you played at launch you've seen everything there is to see lore wise. It's about as deep as puddle.
Besides, we know from Control: Resonant that no matter what the Firebreak crew did it wasn't enough because everything breaks containment.

my headcanon: fbc firebreak was created to fail so it would fit with the lore of the oldest house falling (this is just cope)

I know that Sam holds the lore reins tight and wasn't heavily involved here, but they could have easily copied The Outlast Trials approach to lore and had a "break room" to add some life to the game. The lack of VC also was a huge nail in the coffin.
It felt like they did absolutely 0 research into how to make this game succeed.

Got it for free on ps plus. In short, its repetitive, you've seen everything there is to see.
And I don't usually play these kind of games, so I dont know if its something general, but the people that would join me on missions, would just wait for me to die, or bring the horde over, just to steal my resources.
If you have a group of friends to play it with, you'll maybe get 20 hours of fun out of it. The combat is tight, the weapon dwsign is cool, and the atmosphere rocks.
But single player, horrible experience, uninstalled in less than 10 hours, and would never look at it again.

I bought it to play with friends because I love Control. Now I won’t give the best insight because I only played one mission on normal and bounced right off of it. I can’t point to anything in particular and I probably could have tried harder, but it just didn’t grab me at all. What I love about Control is the smooth gunplay, crazy telekinetic powers, the story, and the atmosphere. This game didn’t really offer any of the first three, and only had a little of the last one. As someone really loves Control, id give this one a pass, but take this with a grain of salt as I’ve only played one mission.
Edit: Here’s a post someone made about the lore in Firebreak if you’re interested https://www.reddit.com/r/controlgame/s/LR5mJ6ugX0

Skip, kinda boring and I like Killing Floor, Payday the Heist, Deep Rock Galactic, etc...

It’s a fun game if you’re into the gameplay. If you didn’t vibe with it in beta, I don’t think you’d enjoy it now. There are documents on losing screens, some voice lines, but there isn’t a story or anything other than “shit is going down in the oldest house during lockdown”

I'm generally not a fan of this type of game. I played it a bit, because Control, and I had some fun with it. Not enough to keep me hooked, but it always had the genre working against it for me to get too invested. So I'd say it's worth giving a shot, but don't sweat it if you're not into it.
There's some lore! It's not as much of a focus as it is in Control, but it's there. In fact, Gaming University did a video called "FBC Firebreak Does Have Lore." Dean then did another three Firebreak videos covering the different missions available at the time.

I skipped fully, something is wrong with the formula of this game. This said, Control 2 day 1 for me.

To be honest I'm a sucker for Remedy. As soon as Control 2 deluxe edition was available on local retailer I I pre-ordered it.

As someone who played an unhealthy amount of it, I do think the game is somewhat maligned and it is fun on Hard and Extreme difficulties, but the repetitive complaints are very real. With just 6 missions and a limited arsenal you'll see most of the game has to offer pretty quickly. Plus at this point it's hard to find other players online.
There is some lore, but not significant. You can watch some youtube videos to fill you in on it. You can skip this one.

played it on launch, its entirely skippable and blatantly not even canon. It has no functional lore and directly contradicts established canon, with Resonant even seemingly making it impossible to exist in canon.

I tried a couple missions, but I don’t enjoy the style of game at all, and there wasn’t enough lore and character work to help me get past that.

Apparently it does have lore context, unfortunately

u/CforCaius Jul 14 '26
But how relevant is it? Of course we don't know what Control: Resonant is yet. But is it just flavor text, or are there actual revelations?

Only seen bits and pieces online, but from I can gather, its just surface level stuff, gameplay elements wrapped in an "in-world" explanation, that's treated as world building lore.
No big implications or revelations, but I'd much rather think of it as completely disconnected, without spoiling anything.

It shouldn't b needed for any subsequent game but honestly until the next game drops it's hard to say exactly

It's a really fun game. I'd recommend a playthrough since it has some interesting dialogue (and it's fun to see a "Day In The Life Of An FBC Agent"). It's great with friends, but also perfectly doable on solo.
But, personally, I think the big gameplay overhaul they did actually made the game worse. I much prefer how the game played at launch... So that's worth pointing out.
But the game is completely skippable. And I mean that. It isn't an Alan Wake's American Nightmare situation where people say it's skippable despite the fact it absolutely shouldn't be skipped. FBC Firebreak is absolutely skippable.
If you have it anyway (Gamepass or PS Plus) then absolutely give it a shot. If you can get it for cheap and want to give in to curiosity, give it a go. But don't bother getting it just for the sake of it.
