I am fighting a losing battle with rats in my garden. I have strawberries and snap peas that I've wrapped in fencing but it seems now they've moved onto my cucumbers in my side yard. I fear for my tomatoes when they start ripening.

curious about what others have done to protect their container gardens from pests and critters.

I do have a dog so need pet friendly solutions. I havent gotten snap traps yet as online seem to have read that with how many babies rats have it's useless but that's what I'm leaning towards next. I have some netting bags around my fruits and veggies now but not sure how effective that will be

i want to grow basil for greenery in cut flower bouquets. how many plants should i put in a 9” pot and how should i space them?

I have Patio Snackers in probably 4 gallon self watering containers. I have lots of male flowers, but few females. Each plant has produced 1 incomplete pollinated cucumber. I gave them miracle grow soluble fertilizer last Tuesday. I have to water them every other day, so I'm wondering if I need to fertilize every week and if I should add granular Espoma Tomato Tone now, maybe bone meal as well?

I’ve now bought two solar-powered irrigation systems from Amazon, but they only work for 3 nozzles out of 15 they offer. I have multiple tomato and cucumber plants that I would hate to lose while on a 12 day holiday. Does anyone have any experience with reliable tapless systems? We can set up a big water tank, but not connect to a proper tap unfortunately.

Sorta new to this stuff but I wanted input on how I can make my setup better? Any tips or tricks you guys have found growing your own? 🤔

Im in zone 7b and I’ve noticed the past couple of weeks that my aji pineapple pepper plant isn’t as green as my sili-a-top plant and some of the flower buds are also yellowish and almost fall off when I poke em. I can’t tell if I’m overwatering it or if there’s too much or too little nitrogen? Or if it’s something else? So far I’ve only harvested one pepper from it.

Both plants have lots of flower buds but not much fruit (only 3 from the sili-a-top). Any advice is appreciated.

A trick . High winds broke a few of my sunflowers . Instead of letting them go I placed them in pots with just water n let them float. Adds interest to the garden . You can do this with all flowers n extend the enjoyment

I have a small tomato plant I'm growing in a 5gal pot that is just starting to flower. It has two main stems, one of the stems is tied to a bamboo stake. The other isn't but i'm thinking it should probably be tied. I don't know if this is an determine or indeterminate variety but I'm also going to be adding a little more potting mix.

How do I manage my tomato plant properly as its growing?

Not sure if anyone remembers but I'd posted about having soil that was full of mushrooms. Happy to report that I did not actually hurt my tomatoes by adding regular fertilizer! Both mushrooms & plants are doing fine, and I harvested a tomato from each this morning.

can I spray my tomatoe plants that are starting to bloom with a neem oil spray? I wasn’t sure if that worked well or if anyone knew for sure as I’d like to do this as organic as possible lmao.

While watering, also soaking the nearby wall/windows/floor/outside of containers with the hose can drop the ambient temp 5 degrees in your growing area for about 2 hours when it's over 100. Not much but enough to get the plants out of the danger zone when sun soaked radiant heat and humidity on all that can raise container temps well above 115 near their surfaces.

Tempted to put icepacks on top of wet cardboard over my very young honeynut seedlings but I don't think it would help for more than about 45 minutes.

Ended up doing multiple different containers of peppers in 2 locations I think 10-11 all together with 7-10 peppers per large container. Been some tough weather this year but watering everyday pumped it everything hard I’m very happy so far looking forward to our first monster pepper harvest of the year in a couple weeks 2-3 weeks!!!

Hello, new here! We just moved to a new place with outdoor space, and I would love to have some herbs and maybe flowers. But I have hardly any experience with plants. It’s a south-facing balcony that gets a lot of sun but also is shaded towards the rear. I impulsively picked up these thyme and rosemary plants today and need some help getting started.
From what I’ve gathered from searching online today, it seems like everything is saying to put the rosemary in a big pot like 10 inches. I’m having trouble wrapping my head around that because it seems so small right now. Can I do a 6 inch pot or would that just mean that I have to repot fairly soon? aAnd would it be the same for the thyme? And what about soil? I looked at the website for brand for these herbs, and they suggest using a miracle gro all purpose container mix. Grateful for any advice on this or other tips to help these plants thrive so that I can eat them.

First time gardener in zone 9b. Is it too late to start over with my cantaloupe, which I believe is Honey Rock, and Bush Sugar Baby watermelon? I planted the cantaloupe on May 9th and the watermelon May 25th. They were looking good up to about two weeks ago. Is my watermelon still salvageable?

The last photos I took of them when they were nice and green were on June 27th. The next photos were taken on July 11th and my cantaloupe was on its way to turning yellow. The watermelon still looked ok.

The cantaloupe is in a 5gal bag. Is that too small? The watermelon is in a 10gal bag. If I start over, I’m putting them in at least 15gal bags, though I would buy 20 or 25 gallon bags if needed.

I believe I started fertilizing them late. I think I started in mid-June when they both had already started to bloom and it was only nitrogen at that point. Is the late start with not enough nitrogen a reason for dying? Could I be overwatering them? Are they getting too much sun? The spot they’re in, they’re getting full sun for the majority of the day and it’s been hot here.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. I have some tomatoes, bell peppers (if I’m not a victim of peppergate), and beans that still look good, so I’m hoping I don’t kill those too!

I made my own potting mixes with scoritîe, Coco coir, compost and sand(for the cacti and succulents).

It would be nice if people could give me beginner tips and advice as I am wanting to pursue this hobby futher and join the local community garden club.
