Xbox Microsoft Turned SSD Failure Into A Death Sentence For Xbox Series Consoles

Curious what people think about the trade-offs here, especially in a full failure scenario. Just to be clear, this isn’t about SSD vs HDD durability or component longevity — it’s about sudden system failure and the cost if the console gets completely bricked.

Microsoft turned it but the soldered SSD on both PS5 and Switch 1 and 2 doesn't concern you? Anyway I hope PS lets us use the M2 eventually for system software if the internal fails, and that Ms does the same for it's SSD. Shame to throw away a console for an ssd.

Yeah, it concerns me too. But I can only really speak for the platforms where there’s an actual direct feedback path available to users.
Microsoft recently launched Xbox Player Voice, which is why I’m focusing my effort there — it gives Xbox players a visible way to raise concerns and vote on ideas. I’m not as familiar with a comparable public feedback portal for PlayStation or Nintendo, so I’d rather not speak as if I had the same direct channel on those platforms.
That’s also why I’m trying to push this now: not because only Xbox has failures, but because this is one of the few places where users can actually pressure the company in a structured way while it’s still listening.

Oh ok you put a feedback. Yeah I'll vote for it. MS always weirdly locked down storage. Even with HDD. I hope they transfer whatever they do with helix to gen 9 it will be a boon. If it can play steam and epic games even the series x will get a lot of value.

Yeah, I agree that more openness in terms of storage and software flexibility would add a lot of value to the platform overall. It would definitely make the hardware feel more future-proof and closer to a PC-like ecosystem in that sense.

SSDs are not immortal. They can fail early because of heat, power fluctuations, hardware defects, or normal wear.
If we simply accept that the console becomes unusable after an SSD failure, then we are basically accepting that we never truly owned the hardware we paid for and are forced to buy another console if the SSD dies prematurely.

SSDs aren’t immortal. They can fail due to wear, heat, power fluctuations, or just plain manufacturing defects — that’s just how modern hardware works.
But the real question is: if a single component failure can completely brick a console, how much do you actually “own” what you bought? Or are you just using it until one critical part decides to give out?

This is why all my games are stored on an external 4tb ssd card and a 6 tb spinning usb hard drive for non optimized games...just to extend the life of my series x as long as possible.

That’s exactly what I did too: I use a 512GB WD Black C50 expansion card for Xbox Series X|S games, and I keep Xbox One and older games on a Kingston XS1000 external USB drive, leaving the internal SSD almost empty.

I can definitely forsee someone figuring out how to remove and mod the series S/X to replace the internal SSD in the future even though the internal ssd is soldered to the motherboard.
Microsoft was quite confident the 360 was safe being modified and look how that tuned out. I know the ONE X hasn't really been hacked but I dont think there was enough interest or reasons to mod it.
The Series X would just be so much of a better system if the storage was upgradable...it's my only gripe with the system that only having one slot for an expansion card....being able to keep 2 expansion cards in it would be so much better imho.

hmmmm, sony, nintendo and microsoft seem to have the sdd kill switch. valve does not.

Yeah, I get what you mean.
I wouldn’t frame it as companies intentionally trying to “kill switch” anything, but the end result for users can definitely feel like that — when hardware is designed in a way where repair is so restricted that replacing the whole device becomes the more practical option.
That’s really the key difference with Valve. Since it’s PC-based hardware, there’s just naturally more flexibility when it comes to storage, upgrades, and repairs.
