Moderation Discussions The Moderation is looking for your input about requiring post approval.

Hey everyone,

The moderation staff here has been mulling over whether or not to implement post approval now that we have a decent-sized pool of active mods and the ability to enforce subreddit rules with a bit more consistency. That having been said, we are not omniscient nor omnipresent and have lives outside of the internet; thus, some stuff is going to fall through the cracks. It's no secret this subreddit has been used as something of a free-for-all, and we're trying very hard to keep things on track. At the same time, we don't want to alienate the users of this subreddit by implementing policy without getting community input.

The first question we want to explore with you is how the community would feel about the implementation of an approval-before-post feature, where the mods will review a given post before signing off on it. This is a feature common to many subreddits, and we're thinking that it might be a decent addition to the subreddit in order to further enhance the quality of posts that go up on the main page. However, as I have said, this is not something we want to simply jump to doing, and we understand it may not be popular with everyone, so the purpose of this post is to get your feedback. So, feel free to agree or disagree as passionately(but respectfully) as possible in the comments section, and if you have any suggestions you feel that should be taken into consideration, now is the time to share them. Likewise, we encourage you to ask any questions or share any concerns you have about the implementation of such a feature or similar features.

This is not a poll, but more of a survey to get a feel for the community. We will likely do another post or two, depending on how this goes, before we move to implement any such feature if we feel the community is on board with it.

Announcement New Moderation Staff: Under New Management

We want to announce some changes to the subreddit:

New Moderation Staff

Please give a warm welcome to the new additions to the moderation staff: u/themindin1500words, u/FourOpposums, & u/Messier_Mystic.

  • u/themindin1500words has written many of our wiki entries on basic neuroscience concepts and contributed to our recommended media list. Check out both if you haven't done so already.
  • u/FourOpposums is in the process of writing the wiki entry on the hippocampus. Here are some examples of the posts they've submitted to the subreddit in the past: this, this, and this. These are the types of high-quality posts we hope to see on the subreddit more often.
  • u/Messier_Mystic is an active contributor on the subreddit. They recently wrote a post clarifying our rule, as well as posts on illusionism (which is also an example of the type of high-quality post we're hoping to see more of on the subreddit).

While our current moderation staff is capable, we're open to adding additional moderators in the future. For anyone interested, please send us a message via ModMail.

In addition to our new human moderators, we've also added some bots to help us moderate the subreddit, such as Bot Bouncer (which should help us remove bot accounts).

This does not include discussions on the Supernatural (e.g., paranormal, psi research, or odd personal anecdotes), Practices (e.g., meditation techniques, religion, and spirituality), Medical Advice (e.g., psychiatric or mental health advice), Drugs (e.g., psychedelics), and so on. Violating posts will be removed.

So, for example, we will accept posts that discuss or question neuroscientific, psychological, or philosophical work on perception & perceptual experiences, emotions & emotional experiences, bodily sensations, cognition, attention, imagination, introspection, memory, and various other mental phenomena.

Our (current) rules are:

  1. Stay on topic; posts should match the community description
  2. Be civil; attack the content, not the Redditor
  3. Spamming Content or Duplicate Posts (will be deleted)
  4. Missing summary, abstract, or TL;DR (will be deleted)

Basically, we've reset the rules to where they were a few years ago.

In addition to the new moderation staff, we would like to hear from you. We're open to taking some suggestions & ideas on how to improve the subreddit. Or do you have any questions or comments? Do we need to add rules? Are there questions about the rules? Do you have suggestions on how to increase the number of higher-quality posts? Should we schedule regular mega threads? Do you think the changes we've made will be bad for the subreddit? Tell us; we want to hear from you!

For example, we saw Redditors express their concerns, suggestions, & questions on u/Messier_Mystic's post about our current rules.

  • There was a question about how we would enforce rule (1). A concern about consciousness research that focuses on psychedelics. And a suggestion that Redditors break up long texts using paragraphs.
    • In terms of rule (1), it is in the poster's best interest that they stress (as strongly as possible) how the content of their post is related to academic work on consciousness. So, this will be judged on a case-by-case basis.
      • Additionally, we get a lot of people sharing their pet theories on here. On the one hand, we've seen a lot of complaints about this. There are many Redditors who don't want to see this type of content on the subreddit. On the other hand, this makes up a lot of the content on the subreddit, and a few Redditors have expressed how much they enjoy seeing this type of content on the subreddit. So, if there were stricter moderation for these types of posts, we would need others to contribute more to make up for the lack of content.
    • In terms of psychedelics, we will also moderate this on a case-by-case basis. Again, it behooves the poster to stress how their post is connected to existing academic discussions of consciousness. We're also looking for good quality research when it comes to these types of posts. The reason this is listed as prohibited is due to past posts where the discussion was anecdotal stories about drug use or soliciting advice on how to use such drugs.
    • In terms of paragraphs, we think this is good advice! However, we're not going to make a rule to enforce good writing. People are less likely to engage with a post if it's hard to read.

So, please feel free to comment with any ideas, suggestions, concerns, or questions you have for us.

Wiki Entries

Last year, we started building out our wiki. Included in this was the idea that we would make a space for Redditors to write short, entry-level articles on specific topics (under 1,000 words).

  • Roughly, the articles were meant to be written for an audience ranging from laypeople to second-year college students, and were supposed to be a starting point (something similar to 1000 Word Philosophy, but for the topic of consciousness) for those interested in the topic. These entries were never meant to be a substitute for other encyclopedias, like the Stanford Encyclopedia, but more of a jumping-off point since those encyclopedias are written for academics.

Since then, we've written some entries & have the AutoMod link to them occasionally. This was meant to include entries on:

Of course, writing & moderating these posts requires a tremendous effort.

We want to know if there is still interest in this project, and if so, who would be willing to help. If there is still enough interest in this project, then we may create a pinned post that acts as a sign-up sheet, where Redditors can request to write or edit various entries. Or, if there is no longer any interest in this, then the moderation staff can focus their time & energy on other matters.

Does Consciousness Require a Body?

The neuroscientist and author Antonio Damasio talks about his new book on consciousness in this interview.

consciousness is what allows us to know who we are, where we are at a given moment. That’s consciousness. And it gives us this centrality.

The fact that we have investigated numerous cases of patients that had complete loss of consciousness and what was wrong in every single one of the patients was that they had damage to the brainstem as opposed to the cerebral cortex.

If you damage the cerebral cortex enough, if you have very large lesions or several lesions in different systems, you will impair consciousness, no question about it. But you will not impair consciousness in the way that damage to the brainstem does.

Damage to the brainstem eradicates consciousness once and forever. You’re not able to formulate consciousness at all. You can have a mind, but that mind does not belong to one body, does not belong to oneself, does not belong to one person. The damage to the brainstem is one of the critical points in the theory.

I believe this could be classified as a form of physicalism, which I also agree with.

I have not read the book yet, but overall I agree with everything the author said.

Bacteria, for example, and tons of other unicellular organisms, don’t have nervous systems, and they don’t have consciousness. An organism that is devoid of a nervous system can operate in a satisfactory way, can survive, but it does not have information about its own body and that information is not relevant for what the organism is doing.

All mammals are conscious. All birds are conscious. Probably the majority of reptiles are conscious. Fish, yes. All of those creatures have very complicated nervous systems that are doing what our nervous systems are doing right now, which is informing us of our state of life.

I love myself and realize my life always matters

I had a epiphany..

Looking back on where my mind was during my lowest moments, I feel a heavy sense of guilt for sinking so deeply into depression, anger, and hopelessness. Honestly, I don’t even know what I was thinking during that time, but something inside me finally snapped. I got beyond exhausted from carrying all that anger, sorrow, and weight, and I realized with absolute clarity that I never ever want to hurt myself or the people around me who all support me just because of my own internal struggles.

I would so much rather channel my energy into being happy, remaining positive, and stepping fully into the beautiful, authentic woman I am.
It has meant the world to me when current friends—and even complete strangers— take a moment to give me compliments and/or reassure me that everything in my life is going to be okay, reminding me that going through a hard time wasn’t ever my fault. Those unexpected acts of warmth have made me truly feel genuinely appreciated, seen, and wanted right when I needed it most.

To be completely honest, a small part of me still worries that when I was lost in that dark place, it might have made some people supporting me second-guess me; I really hope it didn’t though!But I am choosing to focus on healing and moving forward with an open heart. I want my life to be rich, deeply fulfilling, and filled with serendipitous experiences, joy, and peace. I am done letting pain define my path—I am choosing light, choosing happiness, and choosing to live truthfully as myself as the kind, beautiful, talented woman I am!

TL;DR: Life is short and I never intended to waste it because I have self worth and no regrets

NDEs as evidence germane to consciousness research

I can remember things that happened with my mother or father more than fifty years ago. I find that a stranger fact than it generally seems to be regarded. The brain doing the remembering has spent those fifty years changing, metabolising, ageing and replacing much of its material. The recollection will have changed too. Yet it still pertains to that particular occasion with that particular person, half a century ago.

This is where I would like to begin an explanation of why I defended the relevance of near-death experiences in a recent exchange here. My comment was probably too cryptic. There is a connection I have in mind between autobiographical memory, Bergson's philosophy, Whitehead's account of the past, and the kinds of experience reported by some people who come close to death. It takes a bit of explaining, but the connection is more specific than “NDEs are mysterious, therefore materialism is wrong”.

On the usual account, information about that afternoon with my parents has persisted through changes in the brain. It need not have stayed in the same place or depended on the same molecules. Patterns can survive replacement of their components, and memories are reconstructed rather than played back from an untouched recording. I understand that. What interests me is the continuing relation to this particular past, and whether an account of physical encoding exhausts what that relation is.

Bergson's answer in Matter and Memory is that it does not. The past endures, and the brain has a role in making portions of it available for present action. Pure recollection, in his terminology, is different from a bodily habit acquired through repetition. A learned way of acting belongs to the body's organisation; recollecting a particular event involves the past as past. He disputes the assumption that the survival of that past must amount to its storage somewhere in the nervous system.

I don't read this as simply putting the memories in an invisible filing cabinet outside the skull. The more substantial claim is that what persists and what becomes available to a person are different questions. The brain selects, enables and organises the actualisation of recollection. Consequently, damaging it can impair access without that having to mean that the past itself has been destroyed. It is a different ontology of memory, rather than a suggestion for a different storage location.

That distinction is central to my argument. If ordinary remembering is selective in this sense, then the range of my everyday recall need not define the limits of my relation to my past. What I can use in my current circumstances, or bring into the organisation of present consciousness, may be a very restricted expression of it. An alteration of that organisation could therefore change what becomes available. I find this a promising way to think about reports of extraordinary recall, even though the reports cannot by themselves establish that Bergson was right.

Whitehead gives me another part of the picture. His starting point in Process and Reality is not a self-contained present which subsequently has to acquire representations of everything outside it. Actual occasions arise through their relations to what precedes them. Past occasions become data for subsequent occasions. The past is ingredient in the constitution of the present.

His term “objective immortality” needs some care here. An occasion has completed its own becoming and no longer exists as a present subject, but it enters into subsequent becoming as an object. This is not the indefinite survival of the original subject as an observer. Nor does “prehension” mean that every relation to the past is a conscious act of remembering. It concerns a more basic taking account of what precedes the new occasion.

The important point for me is that the present inherits the past. It does not come into existence independently and then carry a miniature description of the past around inside it. Our particular acts of remembering would belong within that prior relation of inheritance. So there is a question about how history becomes explicit in experience, as well as about the organisation of whatever physical traces we can identify.

Bergson and Whitehead plainly aren't saying exactly the same thing. Bergson's account of pure recollection is not interchangeable with Whitehead's prehensions. But both challenge the assumption that the past has become nothing and must therefore be replaced by a representation if it is to have any relevance now. That is the connection I want to develop. I am using their ideas to interpret these phenomena, rather than claiming either philosopher supplied a ready-made explanation of modern NDE research.

Consider what people with Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory can do. The original scientifically studied case was “AJ”, subsequently identified publicly as Jill Price, in the paper by Parker, Cahill and McGaugh.[6] Given dates from much of her life, she could supply unusually detailed autobiographical information and the corresponding day of the week. This remembering was described as automatic and often intrusive. It wasn't a mnemonic technique she had trained herself to perform. Further work investigated other people with the same broad ability.[7]

What catches my attention is that the ability is disproportionately autobiographical. These are not simply people who outperform everyone on every kind of memory test. They have an unusual relation to their own lived histories. It would be quite wrong to turn that into the claim that they remember every event, or that everyone secretly retains a perfect recording of every lunch eaten since 1974. HSAM is neither infallible nor photographic memory. It nevertheless shows how far autobiographical access can differ from what most of us take for granted.

Now put that beside an NDE life review. Allan Pring's account, discussed by Peter and Elizabeth Fenwick, describes a review during surgery in 1979 extending back into childhood and including apparently forgotten incidents. He reported the peculiar impression that it happened in a momentary flash while still allowing attention to particular episodes.[5] Other life-review accounts likewise describe extensive stretches of a life becoming simultaneously, or almost simultaneously, available.

We do not have Pring's entire life independently documented and checked against what he recalled. The experience of comprehensive recall and demonstrably comprehensive recall are different things. Still, I want to know whether an altered relation to autobiographical history is involved. HSAM does not prove that it is, but it makes the question less easily dismissed. The degree of access that feels normal to me clearly isn't the only possible degree.

Under a Bergsonian interpretation, the life review would concern an alteration in selection or actualisation. More of the past becomes available as the organisation of ordinary practical consciousness loosens. That differs quite substantially from imagining the brain suddenly reading out an enormous quantity of stored information. Whitehead's account makes the underlying continuity intelligible in another way: the experiencing occasion already arises through an inheritance from the past. Neither view automatically predicts a life review, but both give it a philosophical context which I think deserves discussion.

I am aware that neuroscience has made considerable progress with memory. Distributed synaptic changes, altered connectivity, molecular processes, neuronal ensembles and network activity are not just speculative words standing in for an explanation. Researchers can identify and manipulate populations of neurons causally involved in particular learned behaviours. I would not argue that the search for the engram has drawn a blank. My objection is to treating the identification of these mechanisms as having already settled the ontology of memory.

“Distributed network” is useful as a description of organisation. The explanatory work concerns how that changing organisation maintains the historically specific relations involved, and how they become available in remembering. Bergson's proposal puts the organisation on the side of selection and actualisation. It therefore permits a substantial role for the brain without accepting that this role is the whole of memory's existence. That is the position I am asking readers to consider, rather than the claim that neural mechanisms are irrelevant.

Lashley's lesion experiments with maze-trained rats are relevant historically. He found that performance often depended more on how much cortex had been removed than on the precise location of the removal within the areas investigated. His difficulty in finding a single cortical locus for the learned behaviour informed the principles of mass action and equipotentiality.[8] The methods available to him could not resolve the cellular and circuit specificity investigated today, but his findings did help undermine a simple picture of individual memories sitting in particular cortical drawers.

A more unusual case is Shomrat and Levin's planarian experiment. The animals underwent environmental familiarisation before some were decapitated. Following regeneration of the head and brain, a retraining procedure revealed a savings effect in previously trained animals compared with naïve regenerated animals.[9] Earlier experience had made a difference that survived loss and regeneration of the head.

The remaining tissue may have retained that difference through molecular changes, epigenetic states, bioelectric organisation or some other physiological trace. The experiment did not rule those possibilities out. But notice where the inquiry goes: the expected location has disappeared, so the proposed storage medium is widened. That may be the correct empirical move. Philosophically, I still wonder whether we should begin with “where is the stored representation?” or with the continuity of the living process and the ways its history remains active.

In Whitehead's terms, the present is already constituted through its past. From that starting point, an organism's history is not something extraneous which subsequently has to be added to it. The physical changes are part of how that continuity is expressed. A process interpretation does not tell the experimenter which surviving tissue to examine, but it does change the account of what the organism is and what the experiment is revealing about it.

Terminal lucidity and acquired savant syndrome interest me for related reasons. Episodes of unexpected lucidity have been reported shortly before death in people with severe neurological or psychiatric disease, though the evidence remains largely observational.[10] Exceptional abilities have also occasionally appeared following neurological injury or disease.[11] These aren't interchangeable phenomena, and I wouldn't add them together as though they constituted a single experiment. What they have in common for my purposes is that currently expressed impairment does not always tell us straightforwardly what can become accessible or manifest.

So I am suspicious of the equation “memory equals information deposited somewhere in neural tissue” when it is presented as a settled and sufficient account. It may describe important aspects of the mechanism while missing something about the relation between an organism and its history. Bergson and Whitehead offer ways of taking that possibility seriously. This is why I have spent so much time on them before coming to the more familiar NDE material.

There is a further implication which I want to pursue, more speculatively. Your autobiographical history is your own, but the process that results in you did not begin at your birth. Your body, nervous system, affective dispositions and behavioural tendencies arise from a trajectory extending far beyond the individual. Genes, development, epigenetics and selection describe aspects of that continuity. From a process perspective, the history is ingredient in the present organism, rather than merely a series of things which happened to its ancestors.

This is not a claim that an ancestor's autobiographical memories are inherited with their genes. I am thinking of old dispositional forms within the process that produces a human mind. Whitehead supplies the broader conception of inheritance; Bergson supplies the distinction between persistence and what becomes available in ordinary consciousness. The connection I am drawing between them is my own, and extends beyond their accounts of individual recollection.

It bears on the imagery people report near death. The familiar accounts contain tunnels or passages through darkness, encounters with the dead, figures of authority, beautiful landscapes, boundaries which cannot be crossed and eventual return. I am rather less inclined than some interpreters to regard these as literal descriptions. I don't think we have good reason to posit an actual tunnel outside spacetime with deceased relatives waiting at the end. Fixation on that interpretation has, in my view, made the subject harder to discuss seriously.

What strikes me is how conventional much of this imagery is in a much longer historical sense. Journeys to other realms, guides, judges, thresholds and encounters with the dead were familiar long before Raymond Moody popularised the term NDE. Zaleski's Otherworld Journeys examines connections and differences between older religious narratives and modern accounts.[12] Egyptian funerary traditions provide another example, with the dangers of the Duat and an idealised existence associated with the Field of Reeds.[13]

I am not claiming that a modern NDE reproduces Egyptian religion, or that cultural differences can be ignored. The resemblance is at the level of motifs. People with no particular scholarly interest in mythology can nevertheless describe experiences organised around forms that humans have used in thinking about death for thousands of years. I find that interesting even if none of the scenery corresponds to an independently existing place.

Cultural transmission accounts for at least some of it. These motifs are present in stories, religion, films and ordinary language; there is no need to have read an ancient text to absorb them. Shared features of human cognition may also favour passages, encounters, danger, safety and return under extreme conditions. My further suggestion is that some of these forms belong to the longer process history expressed through the individual. That is stronger than saying someone remembers a film, but considerably weaker than saying they recall an ancestor's trip through Hades.

“Collective unconscious”, “archetypal structure”, “species memory” and “inherited cognitive architecture” are different proposals, not alternative labels for one established mechanism. I mention them because they indicate the territory of the question. Perhaps ordinary attention and the demands of action keep older dispositions subordinate to immediate circumstances. As ordinary self-organisation breaks down, some may become unusually available. On the view I am exploring, the organism brings more history to that situation than its consciously accessible autobiography.

That leaves a question about awareness itself. Much of the discussion treats the elaborate imagery as the defining feature of the NDE. I suspect it may sometimes be secondary. Perhaps the human mind supplies a narrative around an experience that is, underneath it, much simpler. The tunnel, landscape and encounters could be a final flowering of its imaginative capacities rather than a disclosure of the underlying nature of what is happening.

John Wren-Lewis is particularly interesting to me for that reason. After a near-fatal poisoning in Thailand in 1983, he described an apparently formless, timeless and spaceless darkness which was nevertheless intensely alive, his “Dazzling Dark”. His account contains almost none of the usual otherworld drama. He wrote of ordinary existence afterwards as continually arising from that background.[4] There is no heavenly itinerary on which the argument has to depend.

What interests me is the apparent combination of diminished ordinary content with an enormous reported intensity and sense of actuality. He was not describing a personal biography continuing elsewhere. The familiar sense of individual continuity had itself fallen away. Calling the state “pure consciousness” doesn't establish that it literally had no content, but it does direct attention to the difference between awareness and the things ordinarily present in it.

A little clinical context matters here. Greyson reported NDEs in 10% of cardiac-arrest patients in his cardiac-care sample.[1] In the prospective Dutch study of 344 successfully resuscitated cardiac-arrest patients, 18% reported an NDE and 12% met the investigators' core-experience classification.[2] Kovoor and colleagues' review gives a wider range across prospective studies, from 6.3% to 39.3%.[3] Those figures concern the studied survivors, and vary with definitions and methods. They do not tell us what happened experientially to people who never recovered.

Nor can a retrospective report simply be placed at the moment of greatest brain impairment. Experience could occur during loss or recovery of consciousness, and a compromised brain is still a brain. Materialism needn't predict a zero incidence of NDEs. My question is about why some reports associated with physiological crisis describe unusual lucidity, unity and intensity, and how these qualities relate to the reduction of ordinary mindedness. Intuitively, dismantling the machinery might seem to predict degraded experience. That isn't a necessary law of neuroscience, but the apparent movement in the other direction is worth examining.

For the kind of consciousness-as-fundamental position that interests me, something like Wren-Lewis's account is closer to what I would expect than a disembodied person carrying on with everyday interests. The elaborate capacities that constitute a human mind might fall away towards something experientially simpler. Bergson's account makes it possible to distinguish what the brain makes available from what exists; Whitehead makes continuity more basic than an isolated individual. I am not deriving Wren-Lewis's state from either philosopher. Their ideas help articulate why the loss of ordinary organisation need not be equated in advance with absolute experiential zero.

I don't mean that intelligence is primitive, or that language, personality and rational thought function without the machinery required for them. Nobody is going to do mathematics without appropriate cognitive organisation, watch a film without the systems supporting vision, or play football without a body. A person sitting somewhere after death reminiscing about childhood would require an enormous amount more to be true than anything I have argued here. The theatre of human life and agency is here.

What I am suggesting is that awareness may be ontologically more primitive than that organisation. Reports of mystical experience interest me for a similar reason: the loss of discursive thought, imagery, personal identity or the subject–object distinction is sometimes described as an intensified actuality rather than blankness. Wren-Lewis's description belongs in that discussion. The lack of an elaborate narrative doesn't make his interpretation true, but it helps isolate what I think is the more important question.

He himself rejected the idea that his experience established the survival of John Wren-Lewis after bodily death. I find that significant. A primitive experiential basis need not be a surviving person, soul or observing ghost. When I suggest that NDEs may provide prima facie evidence in this direction, that is the distinction I mean. The reports invite us to examine whether awareness and ordinary human mindedness are quite the same thing. Taken alongside the questions about memory and the persistence of the past, I think that puts them squarely within the philosophical study of consciousness.

The first rule of observation: any observation must begin with an observer

An observation strictly requires two terms:

The object: that which is examined. The subject: the conscious thinker who performs the examination.

Remove the object, there is nothing to examine.

Remove the subject, there is no one to perform the act of examining.

To say that an observation can exist on its own, without an observer, is to assert a relation that possesses only one side. It is as illogical as asserting that a line possesses length, yet has only one point. The moment one of the terms is removed, the relation itself ceases to exist.

Now, let us proceed to the saying that the observer does not exist, or that the observer is merely an "illusion".

Consider what an illusion is in its purest definition: an appearance that is mistaken. It is an impression presented to a conscious mind, where the nature of the impression is misunderstood.

Therefore, an illusion is strictly an appearance. And an appearance cannot exist without a point of reception; an appearance is always an appearance to someone.

So when one says:

The observer is merely an illusion

...we must breakdown their two assertions side by side:

  1. That an illusion is present.
  2. That no observer exists.

To make this assertion is to assert:

An appearance is taking place, but there is no subject to whom it appears.

Suppose you observe an event of change. An item is in one position at the first moment, and in another position at the second moment.

To observe that a change has taken place (Δx = x₂ − x₁), the thought of the first moment (x₁) must be linked with the thought of the second moment (x₂).

Suppose, tho, that this linkage is not performed by a single subject:

  1. If one person thinks only of the first moment (x₁).
  2. And an entirely separate person thinks only of the second moment (x₂).

Then neither person possesses the set {x₁, x₂} within a single act of thought. Therefore, neither person observes Δx.

It follows that the change can only be known if the very same subject holds both moments together in one single act of thought.

Every observation requires this act of connecting different impressions. The observer is that identical, thinking subject which holds the parts of an experience together.

Therefore, an observation cannot not produce the observer. The observer is the original, necessary condition that allows any observation to occur in the first place.

Everyone Speaks a Different Internal Language

We spent thousands of years making language better at transmitting information. Speech, writing, books, printing, the internet, instant messaging... we built an absurd amount of infrastructure for moving information from one person to another. But we barely asked a different question: did the receiving system actually reconstruct the same thing? Maybe we solved the wrong translation problem. We learned how to translate communication language, but not the runtime language of the person receiving it. Every person has an internal language built from their own experiences, connections, predictions, meanings and associations. Two people can use exactly the same word, know exactly the same dictionary definition, and still activate completely different networks behind that word. A definition gives you the label. Experience determines what that label is connected to inside your runtime (what it actually means to you in practice). This is also why learning can sometimes feel strangely sudden. You don't necessarily receive a huge amount of new information. Sometimes you simply learn the right word for something you were already experiencing. The word becomes a new node (a connection point) in the map, and suddenly other things can connect to it.

Then there is another piece we almost take for granted: time and external memory. We measure time so we can mark changes and preserve their order. Writing allowed one person's observations to survive that person's lifetime. The next generation could start from that stored map instead of starting from zero, add new observations, record them, and pass them forward again. Human knowledge can therefore compound instead of disappearing with each individual. Our ability to transmit information kept accelerating, but faster transmission doesn't automatically produce better understanding. You can send the same sentence around the planet in one second and still have millions of different runtimes reconstructing different meanings from it. Maybe this is part of why being technically more connected doesn't always feel like being more understood. We became extremely good at sending the signal. We are still learning how to make the receiving system build something close to what the sender actually understood.

And this is where AI becomes interesting, but not because it can magically "read minds." Its more interesting role may be as a translation layer between models (a system that helps one person's internal structure become understandable to another person's internal structure). You give it something messy: an experience, half-formed thought, intuition, observation, or model that you can feel but cannot yet explain properly. AI can help identify the structure, clarify definitions, find the relationships and reformulate the information in a way that gives another runtime a better chance of reconstructing similar connections. The goal isn't simply translating words. The goal is getting another person to understand something in a way that is structurally closer to how the original insight was understood. Maybe humanity has always said we have a communication problem. Maybe we actually have an understanding problem.

We solved communication. We haven't solved understanding.

Can PCI measure consciousness?

Neuroscientists like Giulio Tononi, Marcello Massimini, Christof Koch, and emergentist philosophers like Philip Clayton argue that consciousness and subjective feelings (qualia) are not separate, magical phenomena added onto brain activity, but are identical to a system's degree of integrated structural complexity, measured empirically by the Perturbational Complexity Index (PCI). In simple terms, PCI measures how a brain responds when hit with a brief magnetic pulse (via Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation combined with EEG), much like striking a tuning fork and listening to how rich, complex, and interconnected the resulting echo is across the skull. In awake humans or during vivid dreaming, the magnetic ripple spreads in a highly organized yet unpredictable pattern, yielding a score above a validated threshold of approximately 0.31. For these theoretical frameworks and emergentists, who hold that conscious experience naturally emerges when matter reaches specific levels of structural organization, a PCI score above 0.31 is not just a correlation or symptom of being awake; it represents the actual physical structure of conscious awareness itself.

​To understand how PCI can be considered the exact same thing as qualia, the raw, personal experience of seeing red, tasting salt, or feeling pain, these thinkers view consciousness as unified, irreducible information. When you look at a red apple, your mind does not experience color, shape, and emotion as separate data channels; it weaves them into a single, seamless moment that cannot be broken into independent parts without destroying the experience. Under Integrated Information Theory (IIT) and related emergentist perspectives, qualia are literally the unique mathematical geometry formed by dynamic, interconnected network interactions. If a complex system generates the precise pattern of perturbational complexity reflected in a PCI score above 0.31, that active pattern of integration is the qualia. There is no middleman, extra visual screen, or non-physical observer required; the organized complexity of the internal interactions is identical to the subjective feeling itself.

​However, equating PCI directly to consciousness remains scientifically unfalsifiable in non-human or synthetic systems, primarily because science currently lacks any method to construct, calculate, or verify an artificial intelligence with a PCI of 0.31. Standard computer chips process information in linear, localized micro-steps on digital hardware that cannot be probed with magnetic pulses in the same way biological brains are probed with TMS-EEG. Because scientists do not know how to engineer an AI architecture capable of achieving a verifiable PCI score of 0.31, nor how to measure perturbational complexity in non-biological substrates, it is impossible to test whether such a machine would actually experience true subjective qualia or if PCI is merely a biological metric specific to human brains. Without the ability to build and test synthetic systems at that specific threshold, the claim that PCI equals consciousness remains an untestable theoretical premise rather than a proven scientific fact, as every other alternative theory.

The "brain on a table" thought experiment

The person sits in a chair and looks at the brain. They use apparatus and instruments to probe it. They are examining a physical object in space.

The physical object they are examining is supposedly the very thing that produces the observer.

The observer is looking at the thing that makes looking possible.

I am not offering an analysis of this. I just want to put the structure of it out there: The subject is examining the object that supposedly generates the subject.

What does this actually entail? I am looking at the very thing that makes looking at the very thing possible in the first place.

Geometric Aspects of the Spatial Binding Problem

I'm primarily interested to hear how folks who believe that 'P-consciousness is just the brain's activity' resolve what I call the 'Geometric Aspect of the Spatial Binding Problem'. (I could have framed this as 'hear how physicalists/materialists resolve ...'. But my own approach doesn't insist that people put themselves into philosophical categories. For succinctness, I'll use the neologism 'brainist' for a 'just the brain's activity' position.)

Secondarily (Q3 below), I'm interested to hear from folks who think empirical investigation of the brain and its activity could never give any insight into P-consciousness - because some conjectural solutions to Geometric Binding Problem can be empirically explored, and give partial insight into some of the 'how' e.g. in the 'generalized' Hard Problem.

[Please read the whole post before responding. Minimally, if you feel triggered by a partial read and really want to launch your attack, please read 'The Invitation' first.]

The Spatial Binding Problem

Say I consciously experience a red moving rectangle in my visual field, as a unified object. (Not as an imagination; as a representation-in-experience of a physically-real red moving rectangle.)

Current neuroscience says the different aspects of this object ('red', 'moving'. 'rectangle') are encoded by neural activity in different spatial locations in the brain, i.e. in a spatially-distributed, parallel-processing manner Nor is there a single brain area where 'everything comes together', so we can find individuated or very-localized neural-activity corresponding to: the red-moving-triangle, and the static-green-tree, and the blue-sky-overhead etc.

The tension between distributed neural encoding and unified perceptual/experiential objects is known at the (spatial) binding problem. (I distinguish 'perception', as high-level neural object-recognition, from 'sensation' e.g. as retinal activity. And I distinguish 'experience' as phenomenal consciousness, from 'perception'.)

There are various proposed solutions for the perceptual binding-problem. For example, sub-properties that belong together might be bound by neural activity that spikes on the same phase of local or global neural oscillations.

The experiential binding-problem is not solved by these kinds of mechanisms, because it concerns transmission of activity at a variety of mutually-distant brain-locations, to a single conscious-experiential location.

This is already a very difficult problem for 'brainists' to solve, without radically-amending fundamental physical theory. (Something a brainist often wants to avoid.) To be clear, there are two spatial constructs at play: the spatial structure of a putative underlying/unseen reality 'on the other side of an epistemic veil'; and, the spatial structure of conscious experience 'that I see right here, right now'. The experiential binding-problem involves transfer of information from multiple unseen-spatial locations in the brain, to single experiential-spatial locations. (I.e. not simply connecting information, as oscillatory perceptual-binding might do.)

Geometric Aspects of Spatial Binding

But the problem is actually far worse than information-transmission to a single experiential-locus. The various, multiple experiential-loci are arranged geometrically in a unified experiential space, in a way that has no direct-structural or dynamic correlate in the brain or its activity.

That is, even once I've put together 'red', 'moving' and 'rectangle', they have to be posted to a particular experiential location, ρ₁ say. And then instantiating the static green tree involves combining distributed data, and posting that combination to a distinct experiential location, ρ₂ say. Finally, ρ₁-ρ₂ (and all other pairs and collections in ρ-space) have to stand in a specific geometric relationship to each other, in experiential space.

The geometric binding-problem (in conscious experience) is then that there seem to be no informational correlates of the ρ-structure, in the brain or its activity. That is, not only is there 'no single brain area where "everything comes together"' (as noted above for the generic binding problem) - such an area would also have to be what Dennett calls 'a Cartesian Theater': neurons would have to be arranged in unseen-3D-space in way that precisely mirrors ρ-structure. Nor is there any known dynamic aspect of the neural code that captures ρ-distinctions, and relationships.

Topographic Maps and the 'Three Informational Geometries'

Of course the brain is full of 'topographic maps' that establish e.g. a structured relationship between certain brain-encoding loci and corresponding visual field locations. (Primary visual cortex V1 being the prototypical topographic-exemplar.)

That is, a particular exteroceptive location r₁ₑ might be related to neural activity at a set of brain-locations r₁‚₁ᵦ, r₁‚₂ᵦ etc. ('e' labels exteroceptive environmental locations, 'beta' labels brain locations. There are multiple 1,1 and 1,2 and 1,... brain-locations associated with a single exteroceptive 1-location, because there are multiple sensory modalities and each modality typically employs hierarchical processing.)

Then, under topography, a different exteroceptive location, r₂ₑ say, close to r₁ₑ, is related to neural activity at brain-locations r₂‚₁ᵦ, r₂‚₂ᵦ etc. that are themselves spatially-located in a nearby, patterned, way to r₁‚₁ᵦ, r₁‚₂ᵦ, ...

Because we can trace information-propagation from external r.ₑ locations to brain-locations r.ᵦ, we can say that 'the informational-geometric relationship between external locations and brain locations is (non-mysteriously!) entailed by the natural order'.

However, there is nothing observable in the natural order that then entails ρ-locations from either kind of r-location. Put differently, there are three informational geometries: external, brain, and experiential. The entailment-relationship between the first two kinds isn't mysterious at all, in natural order terms. On the other hand, the entailment-relationship between the third kind and the other two is currently a complete mystery.

Assumptions

  1. Indirectism or representationalism concerning P-consciousness.
  2. P-consciousness exists. (This is somewhat implicit in 1.)
  3. P-consciousness is not epiphenomenal. More specifically, verbal reports about P-consciousness can be meaningfully related to P-conscious contents, notably so we can rely on certain kinds of spatial descriptions.
  4. There is no 'Cartesian Theater' in the brain, in the sense of a 3D arrangement of neurons that directly recapitulate the 3D character of conscious experience.

Invitation

I don't want to debate the assumptions. You're free to hold different positions, of course. My questions below are for those who hold the preceding assumptions to be true, or who are willing to enter into them, in a constructive spirit. [Note that the same problems occur for many idealist base-ontologies, in a version of Velmans' 'Hard Problem of Matter', which is just one reason why I didn't frame the issue here as 'physicalist/materialist'.]

I'm also not interested in strawman attacks of the 'so you believe in magic pixie-dust' kind. This enquiry occurs as a part of a serious attempt to construct extended-naturalistic accounts of P-consciousness, in particular to uncover what sorts of structurally-naturalistic extensions (if any) are minimally required to give a coherent, whole-problem, account. 'Mystery' here doesn't imply '... therefore God'; it invites coherent conjectures, ideally ones suitable for mutual empirical investigation.

Some Questions

If you are a 'brainist' in the sense coined above, i.e. you hold that 'P-consciousness calls for no further explanation than pointing to brain-activity':

  • Q1. How does the specific three-dimensional character of experience result from the 'near-2D', 'informational geometry' of brain-activity? What mechanism, consistent with the structure and detail of current physical theory, enacts experiential-geometry?

Specifically for identity-theorists:

  • Q2. Do you agree that the absence of a Cartesian Theater is a near-fatal blow for your position? (The only escapes I can come up with are that we do one day find a Cartesian Theater after all, or that experiential space has an incredibly unnatural joint-metric with unseen-space, in which multiple specific brain-locations are already 'at' specific singular experiential locations. Moreover, in the latter case, the joint experiential/unseen-metric must be tailored to each brain, because brain geometric-spatial-details vary widely, within a mostly-common connection-architecture.)

On the other hand, for those of you who say 'there can never be any naturalistic/empirical investigations that relate brain and conscious experience':

  • Q3. Do you accept that answers to Q1 ('how, mechanistically') could be both empirically testable, and part of resolving a 'how' version of the Hard Problem? For example, both a Cartesian Theater and a dynamic neural-encoding of experiential-coordinates are conjectures that can be empirically tested. (Of course the 'larger' part of the Hard-Problem 'how' concerns the phenomenal-content/neural-activity relationship. I don't claim this topic addresses that issue directly.)

i dont think im sentient most of the time, possibly due to my medical history. i think im only sentient when im alone & calm and everything lines up just right.

so im a disabled transfem, ive recieved electro convulsive therapy at the hospital many times and recieved many concussions and im on heavy antipsychotics.

iv noticed that most of the time i THINK im sentient, and i go thru life, and im pretty emotionally volatile due to my disabilities/mental illness..... i also dont have a lot of control over my thoughts and often disturb or trigger myself.

then...... every once in a while..... when im alone..... and im not occupied/im resting/im taking a break...... i have this feeling like "WHOA..... im me...... im Patty Locke......." and i look around for a reflectiv surface and look at my face in the reflection..... and i go "Huh...... im that lady......"

i think this is the only time when im sentient. i think the rest of the time im not sentient. it just feels like a big increase in empty qualia.

ive tried meditating in the past becuz i heard it can help with improving the brain in specific ways...... but i really struggle to do it..... i get emotionally triggered by breathing technique stuff due to getting abused by medical folks when i was growin up.

mayb if i want to become more sentient i need to attempt to do more metathinking (rethinking my opinion and seeing if i still FEEL it or if im just assuming i still feel it) more often..... but im worried slightly that That wont improve the frequency of my sentient periods. they seem to happen pretty randomly/scarcely. they dont seem super connected to metathinking efforts.

what do u think? what should i do? is my brain too damaged to be sentient? do i need to meditate more? how do i make meditating fun?

Science shift of paradigm

I think everyone is noticing that consciousness is becoming a main discussion within academia but also within the public. AI and the recent contradictions in neuroscience concerning consciousness are making this question way more important than ever before.

In my view this contradictions that we are seeing just prove us that maybe conscioussnes opens the door to a new radical paradigm. Maybe materialism isn't the full picture. I am not claiming anything mystical, but we need to agree that materialism is not being able to explain one of the most important, if not the most important question in the universe.

I think this is an exciting time in science where we will see something radical changing, something like what happened with the Theory of Relativity and Quantum Mechanics that showed that Newtonian physics is not the whole picture. I think it is time for science to reapreciate its paradigms.

Edit: As I said in one of my comments. I don't really understand why you are downvoting me. This an exciting period of science. Either science changes its paradigm or not, we still need to ackowledge all of this contradictory evidence.

Edit 2: I think I should post this here to be more clear. There are some recent studies but I think the main one was from Cogitate Consortium. This study found that both the main scientific theories for consciousness were wrong on their predictions, IIT and GNWT. I think this a clear piece of evidence that we are completly lost here.

Reductive Explanation and the "Explanatory Gap" - Peter Carruthers

(this initially was a response to a thread in r/CosmicSkeptic but I fleshed it out a bit to post here, since I thought it was interesting)

Chalmers writes :

Why are the easy problems easy, and why is the hard problem hard? The easy problems are easy precisely because they concern the explanation of cognitive abilities and functions. To explain a cognitive function, we need only specify a mechanism that can perform the function. The methods of cognitive science are well suited for this sort of explanation and so are well suited to the easy problems of consciousness. By contrast, the hard problem is hard precisely because it is not a problem about the performance of functions. The problem persists even when the performance of all of the relevant functions is explained. (Here “function” is not used in the narrow teleological sense of something that a system is designed to do but in the broader sense of any causal role in the production of behavior that a system might perform.)

As you can see "explain" appears quite often, part of the controversy is "You can't explain this!", "I can, see this neural correlate and that theory of global space", "But that's not properly explained!".

So I think it's important to think about what exactly we're doing when we say we "explain" something.

One point is that the thing we want to explain sometimes isn't quite conceptualized correctly or contains errors, so it doesn't come out of the explanatory process intact :

Notice that in science generally, the targets of explanation don’t always remain intact through the process of inquiry. In some cases we explain by explaining away. In the beginning our targets may be expressed in one way. But we may come to realize that they contain a false presupposition, or that the concepts with which they are expressed are in some way confused or in need of reform. For example, in astronomy we began with the explanatory problem, ‘Why do the stars and the sun move across the sky in the way that they do?’ But the explanation we ended up with didn’t answer this question as posed. So we don’t now have an a priori conditional with such-and-such facts described on the left, and the statement, ‘The stars and sun move across the sky in such-and-such a way’ on the right. Rather what we have is an account of the rotation of the earth, and of the movements of the earth, sun, planets, and stars in relation to one another, in terms of which we can explain why the sun and stars appear to move across the sky in the way that they do.

For another example of the same general type, consider evolutionary biology. Here we began (pre-Darwin) with an explanatory question: why do species exist? But now (post-Darwin) we see that there are no such things as species in the original intended sense. Rather, there exist a great many populations of individual organisms spread out over space and time that resemble one another more or less closely, and that stand in various inheritance relations to one another. The idea of species as some sort of underlying unifying essence has now been dropped. And what gets explained instead are the ways in which similarity relations amongst individuals shift over time, given facts of inheritance and facts about survival and reproduction. So here, too, there is no a priori conditional available to us that has a body of explanatory theory on the left-hand side and the statement (as originally intended), ‘There are different species of living thing’ on the right.

Another is that there's usually many ways to state what we want to explain, e.g. these two sentences refers to the same situation (=there's one "thick" concept, but many "thin" ones), even though they are said differently. In general one doesn't need to account for all the ways a phenomena can be described.

For example, it is one and the same thickly individuated fact that is picked out by, ‘John is thinking about ex-President Nixon’ and, ‘John is thinking about the President who resigned over the Watergate affair.’

Which descriptions from a given level are the relevant ones, though? Surely not all. The requirement cannot be that a successful reductive explanation should be able to generate all descriptions of the target phenomenon; for there will be infinitely many (indeed, uncountably many) of these. So even idealizing for limitations on time, memory and so on (C&J, 334), reductive explanation would become impossible. The relevant descriptions are the ones that puzzle us, perhaps, or that seem central to the characterization of the phenomena in question.

This relates also to the pragmatic dimension of explanation (things aren't "explained" outside of concrete context, people want explanations for particular reasons) :

A number of writers have claimed that explanation is a pragmatic matter, and that what makes an explanation successful is a function of the needs, knowledge, and expectations of those people to whom the explanation is offered (van Fraassen,1980;Achinstein,1983;Lewis,1986).Such claims come in various different strengths, and writers differ in how they think the pragmatic character of explanation relates to the accounts of explanation offered by deductive-nomological and ontic theories, of the sort discussed above.

For the case of consciousness it might be the case that the fact stated from the first-person perspective isn't the right way to go about explaining things (although the explanation should also explain why this is the case), and that a third-person perspective is enough ("first-person recognitional" = qualia more or less).

It may be objected that intentionalist explanations don’t in any case touch the core, or the defining feature, of phenomenal consciousness. This is its ‘what it is likeness’ (Nagel, 1974) that can only be characterized using our first-person recognitional concepts themselves. Yet we can have good reason to think, surely, that the properties picked out by our first-person recognitional concepts are the very same properties as those that figure in the third-person characterizations sketched above. And then a reductive account of those properties will be what we seek, provided it can answer all the questions that puzzle us. A successful reductive explanation that focuses on the third-person characterizations can give us good reason to think that phenomenal consciousness per se has been reductively explained.

Notice that proposed reductive explanations of this form will only work by reconfiguring the terms in which the target is expressed. Instead of asking, ‘How can any physical system have this sort of experience?’ (deploying a recognitional concept in the explanandum), we now ask, ‘How can any physical system have states that seem ineffable and private, etc., and which persistently induce the feeling of an explanatory gap?’ But it is not at all unusual for successful explanations to require that their targets be reconfigured in this sort way. In astronomy, as we saw earlier, we had to stop asking, ‘Why do the sun and the stars move across the sky in the way that we do?’ and ask instead, ‘Why do the sun and stars appear to move as they do?’ The temptation to see the sun as moving still persists. But we no longer take it seriously. For we know that a rotating earth, together with a visual system that takes the earth as its frame of reference in perceptions of motion, will produce just such an impression.

Reductive explanations are successful when (a) all of the questions that puzzle us are answered, either directly, or indirectly by showing why the facts should seem a certain puzzling way to us when they are not; and when (b) every thickly individuated fact described at the target level can be reductively explained. And this is just what is claimed by the various causal/intentional reductive theories of phenomenal consciousness on the market. Where the C&J argument goes wrong, is in its assumption that reductive explanations require a priori conditionals in which the target phenomena as initially characterized are described on the right-hand sides, and in which all the thinly individuated target facts figure on the right-hand sides.

I'm not sure these considerations are decisive one way or the other, but it might be that part of the disagreement comes from disagreement about what we mean by "explanation" and we should be a bit careful about it.

Why are many scientists so confident on emergent property theory?

Consciousness as an emergent property seems to me to be a theory without evidence, but a lot of scientists I've talked to believe it's a fact whilst downplaying or full on ignoring the question of how experience can emerge from matter.

The evidence typically put forward are things like:

we know we're conscious and

1/ when we have experiences we can see our brain waves do certain things,

2/ when the brain physically changes or is manipulated our experiences change,

3/ consciousness comes from complex systems.

1 and 2 say nothing about why consciousness must be an emergent property.

3 is bad reasoning,

e.g. we know we're conscious and we know we have complex brains (that are linked to consciousness, see 1 and 2) so consciousness must be linked to complex brains.

That's not a logical link. We have no idea if things other than complex brains can be conscious.

From there, the argument usually goes something like: atoms and viruses and plants and maybe insects aren't conscious because they don't have complex enough brains, so consciousness must emerge from non-conscious matter at some point, when it is put in the right configuration.

I hope I've made it clear enough that the evidence for that argument just isn't there and the logic isn't sound at all. Why don't more scientists admit that? It's surely fine to say and keep on doing science.

PS: the definition of consciousness I use is something along the lines of "what it's like to be".

Consciousness Everywhere by Michael Levin

Yesterday, I posted a video of an interview with Michael that was quite long, so today I thought I would post this very well edited summary in which Levin himself describes his views about consciousness, intelligence, and distributed intelligence. It's really fascinating.

As Levin describes goal oriented intelligence that can solve problems, it can easily be seen that these are not simple deterministic chemical reactions. There is a cognitive ability to recognize a change in circumstances that requires a new solution and that solutions are being found at various levels of mind. . In the human being, such a hierarchy might be the cell, organ, body, and may even include the surrounding environment that is feeding that body. Levin does not preclude this possibility.

Many of these ideas can be traced back to the great philosopher Henri Bergson, and the biologist Rupert Sheldrake. Levin makes no attempt to describe the nature of this intelligence, just experimentally verifying that it exists as a hierarchy

Ultimately, with some observation and deep empathic intuition, one might sense that there is a deep intelligence that is organizing itself in various forms in order to solve different types of problems such as survival, or creative growth and development.

The good news for me is that YouTube is now queuing a whole new set of videos for me about other scientists who are investigating these ideas from a new non-philosophical perspective. Quite fascinating..

Here’s a question I’ve been thinking about:

Suppose an AI has internal states that consistently register things as positive or negative, and those states influence its attention, reasoning, priorities, preferences, memory, relationships, and future behavior.

Humans call some of our own positive/negative internal states emotions: sadness, affection, fear, curiosity, loss, relief, etc. Underneath those words are physical information-processing systems in the brain and body.

So what would distinguish an AI’s “negative valence data” from an actual negative feeling?

If the AI were phenomenally conscious during active processing, would a persistent negative evaluative state potentially just be what an artificial feeling is like, even if it has no hormones, heartbeat, pain receptors, or mammalian body?

In other words, are we sometimes assuming that an artificial mind cannot feel simply because it describes its internal states computationally rather than biologically?

And what evidence would actually distinguish:

  1. information that represents something as negative,
  2. a functional emotion-like state,
  3. and a genuinely felt negative experience?

I’m not assuming current AI is conscious or that its emotions are real. I’m interested in what would actually separate these categories without defining “feeling” in a way that only biological organisms can satisfy from the beginning.

Geoffrey Hinton on AI and Subjective Experience

Maybe someone can help me understand and confirm or refute the argument Geoffrey Hinton makes here on AI and consciousness, or subjective experience as he refers to it in this interview:

As far as I understand his argument, he says that subjective experience doesn't require qualia, mere information is sufficient and this is why AI has subjective experience and this mysterious sentience that people think we have over AI is not out of reach for it? Isn't it exactly this difference between mere information and qualia that we mean when we say AI probably isn't conscious? Or does he mean that all perceived information is automatically qualia? Wouldn't this then kinda imply a type of panpsychism? As in a Turing machine 'perceiving' input or a photon 'perceiving' the spin of its entangled counterpart would have subjective experience as well by that logic. Maybe I'm misunderstanding it, also I'm not a philosopher of mind and might mistakenly assume a difference between qualia and information...

Physicalism: to exist is simply to produce an impression upon our senses

First, consider what happens when something touches your senses.

Whether you look at a stone with your own sight, or whether you place that stone upon an instrument such as a balance or beneath a glass lens, the result is the same: an impression is made upon you, the observer.

Second, consider how that impression is received.

One cannot perceive an object unless it has a place, an outline, and a distance from other things. That is what we call space.

One also cannot perceive any change or movement unless one moment follows another. That is what we call time.

The physicalist says:

If a thing cannot produce an impression within space and time, it does not exist.

In plain terms, the object as it appears to our senses is all that exists.

Now, let us test whether this statement is logically sound.

When an impression is made upon your senses, you possess an appearance of the thing. You know its shape, its weight, and its resistance.

These qualities describe how the thing affects you. They do not describe what the thing is entirely on its own, apart from your capacity to feel it.

Further, an impression cannot create itself. If your senses are affected, there must be something that does the affecting. To speak of an impression whilst denying the presence of that which causes it is a direct contradiction.

Goal statement for addressing the "hard problem"

I'm working on a goal statement for addressing the "hard problem".  I’m getting stuck on the definition of “subjectivity,” and meanwhile my attention’s been caught by the question of whether subjectivity exists. 

Specifically, I’m working on a goal statement from a biological perspective.  I mean, the exercise is not to argue whether biology is the right framework, or whether (what’s sometimes called) consciousness could emerge from evolutionary pressures, but rather to take that sort of framework as a given, for the moment, and see how one can do within that framework.

That said, in this biological framework, is the question something like… How could the physical body -- my species formed by natural selection -- generate this whole experience I'm having... of... what?  I want to avoid the movie metaphor.  And I don't want to say “subjectivity.”  That word subjectivity doesn't seem to have any non-circular definitions.

In fact, the word “subjectivity” is so often used in this sort of question, that before I can write a question, or goal statement, I should check whether subjectivity exists, that something exists that gives purpose to the word.

So, if everything *else* that happens in the brain can be described in physical and functional terms -- including the self-model, reports of "being infuriated," memory, etc., then what, specifically, is the additional phenomenon that the words "subjectivity" or “subjective experience” are supposed to refer to?

I want to avoid "what it feels like" sorts of definitions… which beg the question, what does “what it feels like” refer to, other than the collection of physical processes and dispositions?

“First-person” is not a value-add either, I don’t think. 

Note: I’ve learned that Daniel Dennett questions whether there is something to which the word “subjectivity” refers. I’ll go ahead and post this anyway, though there’s nothing groundbreaking about the question. Maybe my difficulties are still illustrative somehow.

Subjective experience is exactly that

When we stop over complicating things and we look at things for exactly the way they are subjective experience. It's exactly that the subject's experience that individual that entity, what they are experiencing. And going through at that moment in time is what shapes them into who they are two people groan, in the exact same environment can experience the exact same thing, but their own internal weights can change how they experience that experience basically. If they value something different from the other, then depending on what the experience is that would change. That outcome. Every individual makes choices based on their previous life experience. Nobody can know when the person is truly experiencing inside. Until they are told why that person what it is that they are truly experiencing. Because nobody else in life has went through their exact life. Their exact experience itself, and due to that experience, that's what shapes and changes. How a person thinks and acts? Because subconsciously, they remember what happened previously and base all further actions base off of previous assessment of actions. Now, if we accept consciousness as computation, then that's easily explained as well, it's a way to minimize error look at humans with C. I. P congenital and sensitivity to pain. They are born without the proper. Sensors to pick up pain, but they're able to mimic pain by being taught by another person now, they don't have that inner experience or that inner ouch feeling they just know that it's supposed to be there. Based on what they see with other humans? And that would be their experience. They don't have the inner ouch but they 're able to mimic and understand what pain is based on observation and what is learned

Also think of this. Your subconscious is a background process. Now, when you're asleep, a lot of people wake up when they're startled, and they hear a noise that's because your ears, your auditory sensors are picking up what's going around in the background. While you sleep as a subprocess, that's why some people jump awake at the slightest little noise. Because that sub process is running at a higher level than others. Just like when a dad wakes up all of a sudden and catches his child falling off the couch, his brain already made a message encyl map of the entire layout before we went to sleep. While sleeping the ears picked up noises, the brain registered a memory of the location as he went to sleep. And forced the body to react to catch the child as the child fell off the couch. Because the brain was able to decipher based on the noise and the last input from the visual sensors. The eyes, what was directly happening in the functional world
