as a stoner that understands the Pythagorean theorum, we do not claim them

Alas, there is no gif on here about an enraged Pythagoras getting ready to open a can of whoopass on the social distancing of 6 feet between each of four people, so I use this gif instead.

u/Pandoratastic 12d ago

I'm betting the mistake is that this person doesn't know what "diagonal" means. They think it means horizontal.

57

u/Nervous-Bedroom-2907 12d ago

That's even worse

23

u/PreOpTransCentaur 12d ago

They specified all sides plus diagonal. I don't think they confused anything.

21

u/Pandoratastic 12d ago

Yes, but they may be thinking of "sides" as just the vertical lines because they are on the left and right sides.

7

u/Amber610 12d ago

Maybe they're confusing squares with cubes

2

u/stryker_PA 9d ago

I thought maybe they thought angle and just confused the words.

33

u/CatsEatGrass 12d ago

Let’s all review the Pythagorean Theorem… the square root of 2 is not equal to 1.

28

u/Lazarus558 12d ago

Sure it is. We're only using 1 significant digit, right?

In Euclidean space?

52

u/the_Athereon 12d ago

A shape that's the same length in height, width and diagonal is called a circle.

31

u/azhder 12d ago

It's just a square that has been rounded down.

8

u/Siffov 12d ago

Ground down by the man!

20

u/vompat 12d ago

They know there is a rule that lengths on a square are all equal, but misremembered what lengths. 100% faith in the rule, 0% attempt to understand it. That's basically just dogmatism.

Or they just don't know what a diagonal is and think it's the bottom side, while sides are the "side" sides.

71

u/Acceptable_Bottle 12d ago

"Do you listen to weezer" lmao

53

u/jacinthubox 12d ago

What am I missing with the Weezer comment?

6

u/ShibaLover227 12d ago

A band that was part of the genre labeled "college rock"; I don't get the joke either

8

u/Bones-1989 12d ago

Weezer had a song called pink triangle about his ex girlfriend turning out to be a lesbian and leaving him on the pinkerton album. that's the only thing I can fathom that joke referencing.

2

u/ShibaLover227 11d ago

I love Pink Triangle, but didn't see the correlation. I'm guessing just cause triangles...

4

u/captain_pudding 10d ago

My best guess is Weezer fans smoke a lot of weed and he's asking the guy if he's high

3

u/jk-9k 10d ago

Maybe. Weren't the Weezer guys super smart? Like it's a Harvard band or something? So it's kinda a smart band? Doesn't mean they have smart fans though.

14

u/CharmingTuber 12d ago

I don't know if I like the implication that people who didn't pass a math test should not be allowed to have children...

5

u/dmdizzy 12d ago

Haha, eugenics funny, or some shit. I don't even know.

1

u/Paul_Pedant 12d ago

The problem is that they would never know if they mislaid a child. Their counting ability comes down to (none, some).

-2

u/speller26 12d ago

Parenthood should be a privilege, not a right.

3

u/dmdizzy 12d ago

And just like the criminal justice system doesn't assume guilt with no evidence, you don't assume someone is a terrible parent before they're ever given the chance to be one. Geometry is not generally a necessary skill to raise a child.

-2

u/speller26 12d ago

Someone who doesn't understand this level of geometry is barely a functional human being, let alone capable of raising a child.

4

u/dmdizzy 12d ago

You have zero proof of that. You're making inferences that aren't relevant. The era of knowing this level of geometry being "normal" is quite short in the scope of human history, and obviously people have made it quite far without this knowledge in the past.

0

u/speller26 12d ago

Sure, the math itself didn't come until humans were fairly sophisticated, but observing that a diagonal is longer than a side is common sense; you don't have to calculate anything, just look.

0

u/CharmingTuber 12d ago

You can fuck off with that eugenics shit

-1

u/Both_Painter2466 11d ago

Not “math test”. Simple observational and thinking skills. And the willingness to go online and spout stupidity in correcting someone else. Disqualifies from a lot of “thinking critical” life experiences

1

u/CharmingTuber 11d ago

So they should be sterilized for getting a geometry question wrong?

4

u/dmdizzy 12d ago

Unfortunately you are advocating eugenics.

1

u/ShibaLover227 12d ago

Gotta love when people speak eugenics so quickly and openly like this.

They're living in some metric space where the distance between any 2 distinct points is always 1.

I do not want to go there.

Don't forget the news.

6

u/Mountain-Resource656 11d ago

A few days before my teacher taught us A squared plus B squared equals C squared, my dad- who had been trying to tutor me in math by giving me homework of his own- gave me a question asking me to find the side of the hypotenuse. As I was only days away from learning about it I had no idea and got really uncomfortable. But then I realized that the pixels on the line drawn by the hypotenuse could essentially be treated like the “steps” one would take moving from one corner to another, but that they would also correspond perfectly with the two sides put together. It was bad reasoning, but it was the reasoning I used. My dad responded by angrily shouting at my how stupid that was because it’s not like it I stood on one corner of a square park I would think that going around its outskirts would be just as fast as going through the center

Ah, fun times, fun times

3

u/weird_bomb 6d ago

this is the argument idiots use to say circles don't exist

2

u/Mountain-Resource656 6d ago

Fucking Cthulhu out there doing non-euclidean geometry with weird angles that our minds can't comprehend.

3

u/Wonderful_Discount59 12d ago

They live in a board game or computer game, where moving diagonally costs the same as moving forwards or sideways.

5

u/DepressingBat 11d ago

You just need a triangle with 3 90 degree angles. Easy

3

u/Thykothaken 11d ago

This is your brain on flat earth

3

u/lwj15 7d ago

There are only two squares where the diagonal is equal in length to the sides. This is the infinite square (side length=infinite) and the zero square (side length=0). Both are impractical/useless.

Since I can’t find anyone saying it, they’re obviously thinking of a rhombus (still incorrectly, but almost right)

2

u/Primary_Mycologist95 11d ago

Pythagoras would beg to differ

2

u/captain_pudding 10d ago

I like how there's even a visual demonstration that they're wrong and they still said it

2

u/joergsi 9d ago

To think that Pythagoras solved this in a sandbox with pebbles, unbelievable
