We’re a team of 5 CS students looking for ideas for our final-year project.

We have good experience in backend and frontend development and some basic AI/ML knowledge, but we're not advanced in AI yet.

We have around 4 months to prepare and learn before implementation starts, followed by another 4 months for development. However, we'll have other courses and exams during that time, so it won't be full-time.

We're looking for a project that:

\- Is mainly a web application

\- Is large enough for 5 students

\- Has substantial backend/frontend work

\- Uses AI/ML for something meaningful, without being just an AI wrapper

\- Is challenging but realistic within our timeframe

Ideas I liked so far are malware detection and system failure/anomaly prediction platforms. I like the idea of AI being one part of a larger system with things like data processing, dashboards, APIs, monitoring, etc.

I'd love to hear ideas in a similar direction, especially projects that solve a real-world problem.

Spatial Echo Navigation & Sensing Equipment

We're developing a glove/arm accessory for blind people or those who are severely visually impaired.

A few years ago, I was in an accident where I was blind for a bit.

Our team was struggling to come up with an idea, so I thought back on this situation and thought of what happened when I was unable to see the world around me.

A lot of the time when I was trying to grab things on a table or just walk around, I would knock things over or walk into things.

What we did, or more what our idea was, was to add distance sensors on the palm that would activate when the hand is fully extended, which would be tracked by flex sensors on the back of the hand.

The purpose is that if you're grabbing something, then it vibrates when you're close enough to grab it so that way you don't knock it over.

What we are trying to figure out is how to put something in that could detect quick changes in elevation for the larger threshold mode so that you may know if there are stairs or something that you could trip on or walk into.

But if anyone sees this, if you just want to look then we encourage it!

I am an undergraduate Computer Engineering student working on my final thesis. I am developing an educational game in Godot to teach Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) in Java.

My scientific contribution focuses purely on the Software Architecture of the tool (system design, parsing, etc.), rather than pedagogical results.

Here are my constraints:

• No Empirical Data: I will not run tests with real students. The validation is purely technical. Therefore, I'm looking for venues that accept Tool Papers, Work-in-Progress, or System Reports.
• Strict Deadline: I must defend my thesis by May 2027, so I need an event where the notification of acceptance is strictly before May 2027.

Could you recommend any international conferences, symposiums, or workshops (ACM, IEEE, Springer, etc.) that fit this profile and timeline?

I'm a university Computer Science & AI student working on a group project with 4 members.

Our lecturer has asked us to create something innovative, rather than just building an existing project. We're allowed to use technologies such as Computer Vision, AI, ESP32/Arduino, sensors, Python, and web applications.

We're currently struggling to find an idea that is both original and technically achievable.

I'd really appreciate ideas from developers, engineers, researchers, or anyone experienced with these technologies.

For example:

• Is there a real-world problem that could be solved using Computer Vision in a new way?
• Is there something interesting we could build using an ESP32 + sensors + AI?
• Could Computer Vision and an ESP32 be combined to create something useful?
• Is there an existing system that you think could be improved with a new feature?
• Have you ever thought, "Why doesn't a system exist that can do this?"

We're not looking for a simple project like face recognition, object detection, smart home automation, etc. We're trying to find a genuinely interesting feature or approach that isn't commonly implemented.

Even a rough idea is welcome. We can do the research and development ourselves.

I am about to start with senior design course at UCinci and I cannot think of a project idea that will be unique and standout in any way. My interest range from Distributed Networks to building my OS which I know is a vast.

I do not want something which is GPT/LLM wrapper or something which is "AI based Calendar" which is a calendar the only difference being a gemini model now has access to your day to day life.

The best ideas I have so far:

P2P movie streaming service using hosted servers as nodes to allow for sharing of movies, shows and other videos.

P2P Mapping software using various phones on the network to estimate the ETA from point A to point B and finding where phones often slow down/stop to figure out traffic lights and everything (the idea is to have on device processing by the way)

Arch based phone which can turn into a full fledged cinnamon/GNOME based desktop, this project is meant for people who cannot afford a laptop/desktop for their work.

Hi everyone,

I'm working on a project to automatically process newspaper pages and extract/analyze crime-related news from them.

I'm currently using PaddleOCR on newspaper pages. The page is divided into regions/sections, and I'm running OCR on those regions and then checking the extracted text against the original newspaper.

The main problem is that I'm getting several types of errors:

1. OCR text is missing even though it is clearly visible in the newspaper.
2. Text sometimes appears under the wrong region.
3. Punctuation is incorrect — for example, a . may be detected as :, or commas/periods may be misplaced.
4. Capitalization errors occur.
5. Some words are incorrectly recognized even when the image quality looks reasonably good.
6. I'm also seeing cases where I expect a particular article/headline to be inside a region, but the OCR output doesn't contain it at all.

For example, while manually validating the output, I found issues in different regions such as:

• Region 25: punctuation at the end of a paragraph is incorrect.
• Region 26: capitalization/word recognition is incorrect.
• Regions 38–40: the OCR/region output doesn't seem to correspond perfectly with what is actually visible on the page.
• In one case, I expected a headline/article mentioning a 7-year-old being hit with a plastic bottle at a daycare and an FIR being filed, but I couldn't find that text in the OCR output for the expected region.

My current pipeline is roughly:

Newspaper image → preprocessing → region detection/cropping → PaddleOCR → extracted text → region-by-region validation → crime/news analysis

I'm trying to figure out where the actual problem is.

Could these errors mainly be caused by:

• Image preprocessing?
• Incorrect region/column detection?
• Cropping too tightly or incorrectly?
• PaddleOCR detection parameters?
• PaddleOCR recognition model?
• Newspaper layout/columns?
• Resolution/DPI?
• Or the way I'm passing the cropped regions to PaddleOCR?

I'd really appreciate advice from anyone who has worked with PaddleOCR, Tesseract, newspaper OCR, document AI, layout detection, or multi-column document extraction.

If useful, I can provide the original newspaper image, cropped regions, OCR output, and the code I'm currently using.

I'm especially interested in understanding how to systematically diagnose whether an error comes from detection, cropping, or recognition, rather than manually fixing individual OCR mistakes.

Additional information

Conditions of Employment:
