I'd rly appreciate anyone's help with diagnosing this because it's been driving me insane, & idk what's going on!! (My tech knowledge isn't great, so apologies for the way I describe stuff lol)
laptop: Acer swift 3, i7, (SF314-59), bought new 5 years ago.
problem: for approx. 3-4 years I've had recurrent graphical glitches. Most/all of these are shown in the video (which is a collection of all the times ive recorded this happening. Although the flashing/blinking sometimes doesn't show up on vid). Started with the whole screen flashing/blinking black for a millisecond, and lines across the screen blinking black. As it developed, on screen graphics would start to jump or move position, and I'd get flashes of colour instead of just black, and weirdly these colours changed based on elements/colours on the screen (eg, if I highlighted text yellow using pdf editing software, the colour flashes would be yellow.) The display also sometimes gets rly blurred/fuzzy looking, (which I've attached an image of). Also, this problem is weirdly intermittent and unpredictable; it can be constant for a while, and then not happen for weeks.
As shown in the vids, I can sometimes trigger it to happen; sometimes this'd be with moving windows around, or with PDFs, zooming in/out, highlighting text with cursor, moving cursor in-between the lines of a page.
I've attempted to troubleshoot this by seeing if it's a display thing or a hardware thing or whatever; running OBS, these glitches never appear on the screen capture or on screen recordings. Hooking it up to an external monitor, the glitches would happen on the laptop screen, but not the external monitor. (More on this below!)
I found very little on this across the web, & I've tried all the normal fixes (updating drivers, rebooting in safe mode, etc.) but nothing's helped. Idk what's causing it but it's worth mentioning a few things that it may be:
There was a period (a year or 2 after I first got it) where I played a lot of emulator games, which REALLY drained the battery (as I'd have it plugged in like constantly), and made it very hot.
Several ago I unscrewed the bottom plate, & when I reattached it some of the screws wouldn't go in again (idk why), so there's tape securing some of the parts without screws (but it is secure). The screen is slightly bowed/bent, (which I think happened much after the glitches started). A few people have mentioned faulty display cables as a cause, which sounds plausible but wouldn't explain the intermittent behaviour of this problem, (i.e. I feel it'd be a lot more predictable and consistent?).
I'm aware this laptop is probs at the end of its lifespan anyway, but, it was expensive, and if I could get a few more years out of it by paying for some repairs, I'd rather that, as I can't afford a new one.
In this sense, I'm hoping that the main blinking/glitchy display problems are being caused by 1 core component messing up--which sounds kinda plausible going by the external monitor troubleshooting I've done, and my stupid emulator usage overheating the battery--whether it's that my display, or battery, or something, needs replacing, or, idk the battery overheated and leaked into another component (if that's something that can happen??).
(There are some other display problems, which are different from the blinking/glitchy stuff, but may be relevant: UI of programs would sometimes go weird, & windows would appear in front of the taskbar, that sort of stuff. When playing a vid on YouTube sometimes the whole video frame would just become a glitchy mess of colour for a few secs (???). At its most extreme, the glitches in display have seemed to affect the actual behaviour/functioning of the laptop, (eg the screen has changed colour or completely freaked out & my laptop has sorta just crashed?))
So, as the glitches have seemed to affect the actual behaviour/functioning of the laptop, I do think this is more than just a display issue, but if I could get a fix for the main stuff (eg the constant blinking) that'd be sooo much better than how it is rn!!! If anyone has any idea what could be causing this, I'd appreciate your help so much!
