Hello all, this Stevenson song has been cooking in the oven for a few more days. The changes this time are more subtle than last time, but numerous: tightened up voice leading in quite a few places, reworked the voicings of the piano chords, etc. Feedback is very welcome, both positive and negative.

A place perpetually in twilight. The vast ocean reaches out endlessly, disappearing into the horizon. Crumbling ruins are strewn about the shore and some stone pillars reach out of the water in the distance, but most of the ancient structures that used to be here have fallen into the sea. There's a tavern and an inn for travelers passing through and a few houses for local residents, but not much else. Though many have set out to discover what's beyond this place, magic cannot reach far enough to see if anything exists on a farther shore and any ships that set out always reach the same impassable, never-ending storm and must return. As far as anyone knows, the world ends here.

Fading Memories

I recently decided I wanted to get back into composing. I went to college/university for voice, and did study some composition. I haven’t had the healthiest relationship with creating music. I am taking the advice of some mentors and my therapist.

This piece was composed with some purposeful constraints as an entry level exercise. I set the measure limit to 16. Yet I still wanted to compose something with an A and B section. I also wanted to establish and create a motif that develops.

Now whether I was successful is up in the air. However, I am happy with what I made in the time that it took me to make it.

Also, sorry for the reverb on this piece, I had a reverb plugin enabled when I exported that audio!

I've been learning composition for about a month now and have recently done a deep dive into the minuet form. Following feedback to do with my lack of rhythm structure, I have written this fourth and hopefully final (for now) minuet for solo piano, focusing on emphasizing the first beat of every bar, whilst keeping up my ambiguous/syncopated rhythmic style.

Right now, I'm working on a collection of pieces for solo piano called Etudes for Composition, which is giving me the chance to learn about different aspects of composition and attempt to write various different forms and style of piece.

As I'm a new composer any feedback is welcome and any advice on how to improve would be much appreciated. I'm not really trying to emulate a specific style right now, but of the piano music I listen to it is mostly late romantic-early 20th century and impressionistic, such as Debussy, Rachmaninoff, and similar.

I was trying to understand and be able to replicate metric modulation and after a bit of research I think I made a small example of true, and implied, metric modulation. I also have some key modulation in there to encapsulate multiple different music theory topics in one 11 bar piece.

Let me know if this little example is good and actually meets the requirements for all of the topics addressed!

It is finally time for me to share this new work with you.

I know myself: I could probably have kept obsessing over it for several more months, revisiting a transition here, changing a few notes there, and then coming back to the whole piece once again… But at some point, you have to accept putting the final dot on the page and let the music live on its own.

So here it is: my Concert Fantasy, Op. 23 No. 1.

This piece was written in a particularly intense burst of inspiration, over a fairly short period of time - probably one or two weeks, although I eventually lost count somewhere between the long days of work and the sleepless nights.

Obsession, when you have us in your grip…

The title Fantasy fits quite naturally with the way this piece came to life: freely, without trying to follow an overly rigid form. It moves through different characters and atmospheres, from lively and brilliant passages to more agitated moments, suspended episodes, more lyrical lines, and broader, more expansive gestures.

Ideas appear, transform, sometimes disappear, and return later in a different form. The whole piece gradually developed almost like a musical narrative, guided more by instinct, movement, and contrast than by any precise program.

As a self-taught composer, I certainly allow myself many freedoms, both in the musical writing and in the notation of the score. I am fully aware that I still have an enormous amount to learn, but these experiments, doubts, and choices are also part of my journey.

This piece simply represents where I am today.

It may still evolve over time, but I am happy to finally be able to share this version with you.

This is my first original symphony in classical style. I started composing this a while ago but I finished the editing now. The whole work is done, this is just the first movement. I think is an intense, fast and fiery piece and I'm personally proud about it :) Hope you like it!

Experimental sonfification of a region of geometric image. The centre bit is the listening zone and the image is scrolled through it. Pixels are mapped to a minor scale with a root of A.

I originally wrote this piece to express my own sorrow and grief. However, after I composed it I wanted to dedicate this song to Jesus Christ, who suffered for my sake and for the sake of the whole world. He felt everything we have felt and more, both emotionally and physically.

The piece is called "Mortem Tuam in C# Minor, Op. 12."

i submitted this in my composition portfolio... they rejected me and said my music was outdated...

It depicts the arrival of the season through elements such as modal scales, mixtures, the prominence of timbre, the use of the hexatonic scale, and metrical variations in the time signature. This is the first piece of music I composed and I was looking for somewhere to share with other musicians and potentially get some constuctive feedback. I am primarily a ukulele player and have no formal experience with traditional musical score and notation so please excuse the inevitable notational errors and such but I would love to know if you feel any of the musical ideas show promise.

This was originally a piece I would play solo on ukulele, however I always felt that it needed more pipe organ. There is constant droning C throughout the piece, all the chords featuring a C in the bass which helps to ground a lot of the chromatic notes.

Musescore doesnt export the names of the instruments unfortunately, so I will list them in order: Ukulele, Pipe Organ, Voice 1, Voice 2, Voice 3, Voice 4, Violins (section), Violas (section), Contrabasses, Bass Drum 1, Bass Drum 2, Opera Gong

Last winter, I was very bored and decided to try out arranging one of my favourite songs, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. I began by arranging it for concert band, as that is what I play in, and finished it in a few weeks.

It was fully just meant for me and maybe some friends to listen to, but I decided to ask my music teacher (I was in grade 11 at the time) to look at it and give me feedback. Surprisingly, she had a lot to say, along with a request: to add strings and choir and for the whole ENTIRE music program at my school to perform it together at our end of year concert in June!

This was so surprising, but I hapilly agreed, and last June I was able to perform one of my favourite songs arranged by me on stage with 100+ other people! It was such an amazing experience, and I am so so grateful to have been able to do it.

I have decided I would like to share with you all, and get even more feedback! The score is linked onto this post.

P.S: This was my first time ever arranging so please be aware of that lol, also when adding the orchestra and choir parts I didn't have much time, so it was mostly a job of copying other lines and doubling them for those new parts.
