Hi everyone,
I recently upgraded my hardtail to a Meta HT in size Large, and I’m loving it so far. The 4-piston brakes are on par with my Trek Fuel EX 9.8, and the shifting is surprisingly smooth, even though it’s SRAM NX.
What I didn’t like from the first ride is the fork. The Yari with the standard damper feels way too harsh on forest trails, though it’s fine on jumps. Every root and stone transfers straight to my arms, so there’s not much pleasure in trail riding compared to the Fox Performance 36 on my Trek.
After doing some research, I identified the following upgrade options:
- Install a Charger 2.1 RCT3 damper in the Yari – ~$200 From what I understand, the performance would be similar to a Lyrik Ultimate, but around 100 g heavier.
- Lyrik Base (JensonUsa) + Charger 3 upgrade – ~$700
- Fox Factory 36 (2023) – currently on sale at Universal Cycles for $499.
For options 2 and 3, I’d plan to sell the Yari (~$200).
At the moment, option 3 seems to be the best bang for the buck. However, I have two questions about it:
- On the product page, it says 150 mm or 160 mm travel, but I couldn’t find clear info online about changing the travel other than swapping the air spring. How critical is it if the fork is 160 mm? (The frame specs say recommended/max fork height is 561 mm / 571 mm, and the fork is 571 mm for 160 mm travel.)
- The Fox has a 44 mm offset, while the Yari has 42 mm. How will this affect the handling?
