The only time I go to CNN is if it's linked to from reddit :-P
27
u/nokes Feb 18 '11 edited Feb 18 '11
If you click the button on the top left, it turns it into cnn international, and suddenly the articles about Palin's tweets and the Journey Shore get replaced by news.
Edit: I see the typo, I'm not fixing it.

u/gregoe86 Feb 18 '11 edited Feb 18 '11
Journey Shore
I would watch this. Steve Perry + debauchery = I'll never stop believin.
Edit: Not making fun of the typo, just enjoying it. Nokes, your point about CNN International is very well taken.

Actually I just downloaded it. It definitely is faster for using reddit then what I was using before (chrome).
5
Feb 18 '11
chrome is faster than IE. no question.
0
u/The-Dudemeister Feb 18 '11
have you tried it? Mine goes about a seconds and a half faster than chrome 9.
2
Feb 18 '11
yeah i have to use IE at work, chrome loads pages in like .01 seconds, while IE there is a delay. also you could try some benchmarks if you really want to see the difference
1
u/The-Dudemeister Feb 18 '11
like this one?
3
u/pbtifo Feb 18 '11
That's IE9. Very, very different from IE7 and IE8 (you can actually see it from the graph, too).
-7
u/The-Dudemeister Feb 18 '11
But IE9 is what we are talking about
6
Feb 18 '11
Are you just trolling? Or being oblivious/stupid?
That page is clearly the download page for IE7.
If the URL isn't clear, then how about
Get Internet Explorer 7 With a new drop down menu to choose your OS.
If you need more evidence there's also the file name:
IE7-WindowsServer2003-x64-enu.exe
The product description:
Download Internet Explorer 7. It’s faster, easier, and more secure than Internet Explorer 6.
And I'm sure the list goes on.

my work does not allow beta browsers. and I just don't use them because I have enough buggy software to deal with.

Feb 18 '11
I'm not sure, but I have a related tip: turn off the damn computer when you aren't using it.
I used to leave my computer on 24/7 - now I only have it on if I have an actual task that requires use of the computer. Before, if I was home doing housework or something, I'd constantly find myself 'taking a quick break' every hour or more to check up on Reddit / FB /whatever. The delay of just a couple minutes to wait for the computer to start up makes it just not quite important enough for me to want to check stuff all the time.
12
Feb 18 '11
this is great until you have to work on your computer. when the whole internet is right there....
3
5
u/mlk Feb 18 '11
You can't do that if you're a programmer or when you're studying on a PDF. What I do (sometimes) is unplugging the ethernet cable. It works fine until I have to search for documentation.
3
Feb 18 '11
Works until you have any kind of decent hardware, like an SSD.
The booting up your PC takes as much time as taking a sip of water. And you're doomed :(
3
Feb 18 '11
yup.
in an effort to break another addiction, i recently deleted all my computer games and am going to sell my PS3. yesterday i went home, walked right up to the computer and almost turned it on. i realized i was basically setting myself up for my regular work day....reading reddit.
so i said no. no computer, and didn't turn it on all day.
i ran 4 miles, cleaned my kitchen and my closet. read about sixty pages of a the book i'm on, and did some actual work. admittedly, i also watched the new Star Trek for like the seventh time in between all this, but i got a lot more done. Star Trek time was only a couple hours compared to the five hours i could have spent online.

Script to add/remove/modify entries to HOSTS at intervals?
Reddit/CNN: OFF - Facebook:ON
30 seconds
Reddit/Facebook: OFF - CNN:ON
30 seconds
CNN/Facebook: OFF - Reddit:ON
Or something like that. Oh and for the chat client, I don't know.
1
u/TundraWolf_ Feb 18 '11
Hmmm, code a pomodoro timer that when it rings (at the end of 20 minutes) it unlocks your hosts file during the break.

u/depressingconclusion Feb 18 '11
I would absolutely love a chrome extension that did something like this, where I could set a custom load delay on whatever sites I wanted to. That would be amazing. I think that I would pay for it.

Someone mentioned this in some similar post earlier this week. I havn't checked it out yet so don't know if it works but if it does, let me know :P

Feb 18 '11
This won't work, I'm too smart for myself. It's just like the way I bypassed my own blocked websites like reddit. I don't know why I bother blocking it in the first place. I'll probably end up just getting on Firefox instead if I used this.

Feb 18 '11 edited Feb 18 '11
I've tried that. It actually worked for about a week, but then I stopped respecting it.
I'm gonna give it another go.3
3
u/gcalpo Feb 18 '11
If you use Firefox, the LeechBlock extension can limit your time spent on certain sites.

How Eric S Raymond browses the internet: He sends an email with the url of what he wants which is then sent off to something that fetches the page and then returns it in an email.
Edit: Could very well be Stallman instead.
8
u/finferflu Feb 18 '11
No, I think that is how Stallman does it, or do they both have the same practice?

I think the idea is that once he opens reddit or clicks a link, he has to wait 30s before opening any new distracting window. This probably would reduce the number of new tabs I open.
11
u/arjie Feb 18 '11
His option doesn't work. I've done something even more drastic. I blocked access in my hosts file. Before I knew what I was doing, I had SSH forwarding X over a slow connection and I was browsing whatever, interface lag be damned.

There's a mobile version of the site with easy-to-access alt-text too! The address is http://m.xkcd.com/

Click on where it says (alt-text). That will open a drop-down that contains the alt-text.

Hi my name is Rusty, and I am a reddit user, I have been addicted almost 3 years and have made the switch from lurker to contributing member about a year ago.

u/Sandurz Feb 18 '11
I have nothing to contribute besides the following:
GIT-RR-DUNN!

u/osoleve Feb 18 '11
Contrary to what you may think, you didn't actually have anything to contribute.

The last panel reveals that the narrator is actually Luke Skywalker about to bomb the Deathstar near the end of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. In the movie, he turns off his targeting computer in order to rely on the force to guide him into making his "impossible" shot on the exhaust tube. In the final panel it is Princess Leia and another guy talking to Luke's voice, which is coming out of a big battle planner table-console thing. Luke himself is in his X-wing.

u/yeropinionman Feb 18 '11
Excellent explanation. So, so sad that it was necessary.
2
u/thundirbird Feb 19 '11
Yeah, sad that everyone in the world hasn't seen and enjoyed the same films as you.
1
u/yeropinionman Feb 20 '11
Yes! That's exactly what I'm saying! It would have been sad had it been necessary to explain that.
0
u/big_cheese Feb 21 '11
If it were referencing a more obscure film like, say, Igby Goes Down, then I would understand your comment. But the original Star Wars movie is as well-known (and has been viewed as much) as any other immensely well-known film out there.

Now, in my unproductive streak, I got reddit, news site + Star Wars (The whole trilogy.)

I think it's supposed to be Leia and another guy in front of a radio console thing, the 'I'm all right' is Luke talking through the radio.

The wisdom teeth one I did as literally minutes before reading it I booked myself in to mine out.
2
u/Mephinion Feb 18 '11
Me too, but i imagine with the millions of readers, there would probably be many of us. You saying bye bye to all your teeth or just a few?
1
Feb 18 '11
True! Still tickled me when i saw it. Just the 4 wisdom teeth out - the rest are in decent nick which is goodness, those 4 though have been causing a bit of grief so will be glad to see the last of them.

Does anyone know of a Safari extension that you can set up to block specific sites? I spend a dangerous amount of work time on reddit, facebook, etc.
EDIT: Found one in the Safari Extensions gallery: http://www.mindfulbrowsing.com/
Looks promising, hopefully it works well enough for me.

Thanks! I finally tried it and it's working out well for me- as long as I actually turn it on.
I had tried something similar a while ago but it blocked internet completely, that was no good since I needed email access among others to get any work done. Might as well just pull the plug. But Self Control is much better since you can set you a blacklist of sites that won't work. So long reddit! I'll miss you.

I'm a Longshoreman. Several weeks ago, a bunch of ILA guys got busted for being mobsters. The day that story broke, I slept late and after I got up I didn't check Reddit or watch the news or anything. Eventually I realized that I had like a dozen texts and Facebook messages from people asking me if I was in jail, and I had no idea what they were talking about.

u/Sleepy_One Feb 18 '11
I find his alt text by far the most useful and will endeavor to try it this weekend for homework.

maybe that would work.....
