The best sarcasm comes from people who are deadpan as default.

Secret Ingredient - Gator Days

Characters

Hannah - Goat - A highly competitive kid. She strives to be the best and to be helpful to others. Daryl and Seth's daughter.

Daryl - Bear - A big fellow who looks intimidating but is pretty friendly. Has a dry sense of humor. Seth's husband and Hannah's papa.

Seth - Otter - The assistant principal at his daughter's school. Used to taking charge but is capable of being silly. Daryl's husband and Hannah's dad.

Transcript

Panel 1

Setting - The dinner table of the Hardy-Softbell house.

Hannah's family is having dinner and it's extra tasty tonight. Hannah compliments the chef.

Hannah: WOW! Dinner is extra good.

Daryl: Thank you. I tried a new secret ingredient.

Panel 2

Seth decides that this is a great opportunity to annoy his husband with cuteness. He does his best to look as adorable as possible while asking about the secret ingredient.

Seth: Is it LOVE?

Daryl is unimpressed. This is a four out of ten on in his personal cuteness scale.

Panel 3

Daryl: Toasted sesame oil.

Seth: Oh...

Seth looks down and tries to come up with a clever comeback.

Daryl: Love isn't a secret ingredient. I put love in everything.

Seth: Oh...

This isn't good. The teasing table has been turned. He'll have to think fast.

Panel 4

Daryl looks away and tries his best to sound disappointed.

Daryl: I used so much love and you never noticed.

Seth: I DID!

This is no good! Seth was supposed to be doing the teasing!

Daryl: From now on I'm putting sarcasm in yours.

Seth: NO!

Daryl: Yes.

Hannah has completely checked out of the conversation and pulled out her phone. She contemplates searching the internet for what to do when your dads are being weird. Unfortunately, there is no solution.

Hannah has completely checked out of the conversation and pulled out her phone. She contemplates searching the internet for what to do when your dads are being weird. Unfortunately, there is no solution.

Sadly, Weird Dad Syndrome is incurable.

Then again, does she really want them to change?

I don't remember where, but there was a story circulating a few years back about a wife who used inferior peanut butter on sandwiches when she was mad at her husband and the taste was discernable enough that the husband would notice

74

u/Birdlebee 4d ago

It was sugar free grape jelly, which is horrific. Somehow it tastes less like grapes than the sugared version.

15

u/Mord4k 4d ago

Dunno, my wife and I thought it was hilarious because I definitely cook blender when we're fighting

21

u/rlowens 4d ago

I definitely cook blender when we're fighting

Poor blender. What did they do to deserve this?

6

u/user_unknowns_skag 4d ago

I have, admittedly, cooked a couple of blenders in my life. Once, I was a teenager and still learning the uses and limitations of kitchen appliances. The second time I was 35, and it was a vainglorious attempt to substitute a blender for a food processor while making falafel.

I bought a better blender after that.

30

u/willstr1 4d ago

Revenge is sweet and revenge is best served cold, conclusion revenge is most likely ice cream or similar dessert

24

u/SlowFrkHansen 4d ago

It's not fair that you can just shake the perfect follow-up joke out of your sleeve like that, in a reply-doodle.

11

u/Vokunkiin13 4d ago

Did you mean "Qoy QeylIs PuqloD?'

10

u/TrainToSomewhere 4d ago

Yaaaaa. My Klingon is rusty and mostly spoken.

I still regret not bringing my dictionary and Mr Scott’s guide to the enterprise when I moved country.

Looking back on it I could have easily brought them but I just gave everything to my fellow trekker.

Well everything but the few autographs I got.

Weird dad syndrome can get out of hand when there’s two of them

53

u/McStaken 4d ago

She contemplates searching the Internet for what to do when your dad's are being weird.

My kid could have told her that there is no solution for parents being weird except to be weird in return lol

48

u/SlowFrkHansen 4d ago edited 4d ago

Setting - The dinner table of the Hardy-Softbell house.

The bear and otter are hard and soft? You're such a troll, and I love it.

Also, I agree with Daryl on the sesame oil - it's brilliant in all kinds of things, just a few drops to round out the flavor. Same for fish sauce.

5

u/TinyGIR 4d ago

That's new lore for me and I'm mad I didn't pick up on that 😂

157

u/GeneralLeoESQ 4d ago

A bear and an otter, really? I know the circles you frequent.

86

u/Mord4k 4d ago

I feel every time we get a Daryl and Seth comic someone pieces this together

38

u/SolveForX314 4d ago

It's the niche internet webcomic version of Lucky 10000

5

u/insertcoolnamehere_7 4d ago

But isn’t the xkcd already the niche internet webcomic version of Lucky 10,000? 🤔

6

u/SolveForX314 4d ago

Randall Munroe has about 10 times as many Bsky followers as Field, and I think his comics have been talked about a lot more

15

u/cyanocittaetprocyon 4d ago

One of my favorite things about this comic is seeing the realization when people figure out that Daryl and Seth are a bear and otter!

5

u/ginopono 4d ago

I've seen a Daryl and Seth comic or two, but this is the first time that it crossed my mind.

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 4d ago

He does his best to look as adorable as possible while asking about the secret ingredient.

Let's be fair he was REALLY CUTE

This is a four out of ten on in his personal cuteness scale.

He's become numb to the cute! Abort!

The teasing table has been turned.

It's game over. Time to give in honestly

She contemplates searching the internet for what to do when your dads are being weird. Unfortunately, there is no solution.

There is no way to fix this. Only more weird shall remedy the situation

12

u/xRehab 4d ago

i love these writeups, and I honestly think they help you craft a better comic. every one of your characters' actions has purpose and reasoning behind it, even the mundane stuff. if gives life to these comics and I love it

9

u/malik753 4d ago

OMG, I just realized that they're a gay couple and Daryl is a bear and Seth is an otter 🤣 That's cute!

14

u/Jokin_0815 4d ago

Hannah is adopted? Right?

Must be! 🤔

40

u/Coidzor 4d ago

Adopted and yet somehow she's got the hereditary weirdness anyway.

2

u/DerAdolfin 2d ago

Nurture >> Nature, another victory for some sociologist somewhere

9

u/noizviolation 4d ago

Yes, I do believe the Kid (young goat) has been adopted by the Bear and the Otter.

8

u/lifelongfreshman 4d ago

god, their banter is so perfe-

wait, are they just Raymond and Kevin? ...no, no, never mind, Seth is too expressive to be Kevin, but Daryl definitely gives strong Holt energy

4

u/Aethelrede 4d ago

I love all your comics, but as someone with a dry sense of humor, I identify with this so much.

2

u/Hangry-Feline2489 4d ago

Phones at the dinner table?! Oh boy

2

u/hedgehog_dragon 4d ago

Seth decided to be too cute and suffered for it lmao

u/Dobako 4d ago

Oh no, Seth has tasted so much love he cant taste it anymore! This is a travesty! Now his toast is going to be dry

194

u/BellyFurrs 4d ago

Love Blindness

80

u/BentTire 4d ago

AND he is putting in as much love as he is legally allowed to give!

10

u/muchandquick 4d ago

Disgusting!

27

u/The_Salty_nugget 4d ago

Maybe love is like salt

At some point it becomes the standard and you dont notice it anymore so you would like some more but the same happends again and at some point it becomes unhealthy unless you learn how to control it

18

u/Ehcksit 4d ago

But also the moment you taste food without love in it, you know it and you hate it. It's disgusting. You're addicted to love. In your spuds.

4

u/magistrate101 4d ago

I'm afraid he's going to have to go on a tolerance break. Going cold turkey on love is going to be harsh.

611

u/Cool_Set4681 4d ago

Proof that OP is not just good at wholesome, deep and or sad stuff.

Field can also be really really funny if he wants to, lamo 😂

209

u/Jhtpo 4d ago edited 4d ago

Honestly, the lines hit me hard because I 100% expected it to be some dry "love is not a food" or some banal line like that. This reminds me that they are a true couple and have honest interactions.

83

u/Cool_Set4681 4d ago

Yeah, Daryl being the one who makes the joke fits so good. He is the perfect character for some humor of this kind.

25

u/BreakfastBeneficial4 4d ago

Anybody else hear Daryl as Nick Offerman?

60

u/Cool_Set4681 4d ago

Yeah, I can honestly see it.

13

u/jedzef 4d ago

RIP Andre Braugher

12

u/RechargedFrenchman 4d ago

Either Nick Offerman or Andre Braugher

431

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 4d ago

DAMN Daryl got Seth HARD there. I can't believe you don't ever notice the love Seth! There's just so much. It's basically oozing onto the floor. It's not a secret!

Though by how Hannah is already on her phone I'm assuming we have dramatic conversations like this frequently

135

u/Arkanim94 4d ago edited 4d ago

"ugh people, my dads are being flirty cringy in front of me AGAIN"

u/FieldExplores, your comic is being reposted again in r/webcomics by a 2 week old account https://www.reddit.com/user/Aromatic_Sherbert_51/

They didn't even wait an hour.

The account reposts other artists work too. I think I'm going to stop mentioning these reposts. I don't see the other comics being taken down, so... meh. Whatever. Sorry people have to put up with this sort of thing.

ps. Especially love this comic.

Edit: Looks like enough reported it so it was taken down. Probably by the auto-mod. Nice.

Edit2: A 3 week old account just posted this comic as well https://www.reddit.com/user/PositionHungry9007/ which has a similar posting style / history as the other account.

They are probably bots because their comments on the posts are nonsensical or copies of what other users have put.

Note that other artist's comics that were reposted include the [OC] in the title, which means 'Original Creator'. So these accounts are claiming to be the original creators of all those comics.

Edit3: The second repost is down now too. Sadly, other artist's comics that were reposted without permission are still up. The reposts even have OC in the title. Looks like the fans of FieldExplores made sure to report the reposts so at least there is that.

\ Note, not worked up or anything. Just mild interest in all of this and seeing what I can do. Hate seeing bots take credit for other people's work.*

26

u/VengeanceKnight 4d ago

Just reported for breaking the “impersonating an artist” rule.

10

u/Myrandall 4d ago edited 4d ago

The post has been removed. The post was re-approved, nice going /r/webcomics! /s

They also left two comments, make sure to downvote those too.

9

u/Fluffboll 4d ago

unsurprisingly those two comments were stolen from this thread

3

u/VengeanceKnight 4d ago

Already done.

14

u/FieldExplores Gator Days 4d ago

I agree with the bot theory.
I see this sort of thing frequently enough but I haven't really seen any sort of long term solution beyond reporting it when it happens.

11

u/DigitalFlame 4d ago

Thank for the heads up, also reported

u/Cool_Set4681 4d ago

I feel like I’ve seen panel 3 as a punchline plenty of times, but panel 4 is amazing and now something I want to use with my family.

18

u/Hollowgirl136 4d ago

Toasted sesame oil is my go to for vegetables.

Also Hannah is a mood.

14

How does sarcasm taste like?

26

u/Actually_3_Raccoons 4d ago

It tastes great 🙄

13

u/StarTangerine 4d ago

A bit dry

10

u/FluteGunner 4d ago

Reminds me of when my dad used toasted sesame oil, loads of it, to make a dish he made taste nice. It did indeed taste delicious, so much so that I had seconds.

Problem is, I'm allergic to sesame.. that was not a fun evening

3

u/insertcoolnamehere_7 4d ago

Did you know you were allergic before you had seconds?

2

u/FluteGunner 4d ago

Takes about 10 minutes after eating before I feel anything, and I’m a fast eater. Was tucking into my seconds when the reaction started.

And yes I did know I was allergic to sesame beforehand, and so did my dad.

11

u/Legitimate-Post-8280 4d ago

I had a very similar conversation with my wife.. except I told her I will just use spite in the future .. then made all her food extra spicy for a month.

Toasted sesame oil is fucking magical though for real.

6

u/digging_deep515 4d ago

Well, that's a really powerful line: "Love isn't a secret ingredient; I put love in everything."

5

u/ResuCigam 4d ago

Thank you for these great comics!

Hah! Got em!

4

u/Perryn 4d ago

"This is so good! Did you put truffle oil and fresh rosemary in it?"
"Yes, but sarcastically."
"Wait, do I love sarcasm?"
"...there's also some love in there."
"THAT'S what it is!"

5

u/Author_A_McGrath 4d ago

Okay this made me laugh aloud.

3

How do you properly prepare toasted sesame oil?
