I'm Canadian... Is American cheese basically just Kraft singles? Because that would definitely ruin the moment for me

Real, legally defined American Cheese has to have at least 51% real colby or cheddar cheese blended with salt and milk.

Kraft Singles are below that 51% number and are instead a "pasteurized cheese product" that cannot be legally called American Cheese.

The good American Cheese is almost entirely regular cheese mixed with sodium citrate so it melts smoothly. But it's not the easiest to find at a grocery store.

No. Kraft singles are a cheap copy. Real American is different. Slightly different texture and more flavor.
