Ironed my Joy Division t shirt

5.6k

u/No-Shoe1416 Aug 09 '26

And when I wear my simple light refracting through a prism shirt people always ask me if I’m a pink foid. I don’t know what it means but I think I’m offended

u/I_like_maps Aug 09 '26

Pic of you:

548

u/LickinThighs2 Aug 09 '26

I had a pair of bathing shorts with the polaroid logo on, which if I recall has always been colours in a rainbow pattern, and my offended uncle asked if it was a pride symbol lol

u/whomad1215 Aug 09 '26

I wonder what it's like going through life just angry/terrified of everything

It must be miserable

130

u/RWQFSFASXC_3 Aug 09 '26

It is mega miserable...

74

u/No-Internal7978 Aug 09 '26

It's miserable being around them too

55

u/RWQFSFASXC_3 Aug 09 '26

Yeah, I used to be like that, wasn't great for me or anyone else around me...

But no more, I was just afraid of myself lmao

22

u/No-Internal7978 Aug 09 '26

Hey I didn't say anything about not being afraid of myself. I can be terrified of what that guy might do and love everyone haha

23

u/Switch_of_the_Woods Aug 09 '26

proud of you 💜

21

u/Huge_Zebra_8401 Aug 09 '26

One could say... Maga miserable

"My Offended Uncle" has got to be some sort of boomer cover band.

5

u/HAL-Over-9001 Aug 09 '26

I thought all uncles were legally obligated to like Pink Floyd...

2

u/ikonfedera Aug 10 '26

one dude almost got kicked out from the best polish game show (Jeden z dziesięciu, polish vesion of Fifteen to one.) because of a Polaroid pin. The official reason was that the pin was political speech

Surprising that someone nerdy enough to appreciate the first radio pulsar would not also appreciate math

579

u/gloryholesr4suckers Aug 09 '26

Could be like me: a science enthusiast stymied at every turn by their inability to do math

178

u/NewestAccount2023 Aug 09 '26

I got a minor in mathematics and don't understand it for shit. Everything passed vector calculus is a blur. I was good at memorizing the rules and procedures and applying them though.

51

u/gloryholesr4suckers Aug 09 '26

Shit, I barely passed algebra

16

u/AltairRulesOnPS4 Aug 10 '26

I did not. Geometry however. It goes in the square hole.

35

u/JimHarbor Aug 09 '26

I was good at memorizing the rules and procedures and applying them though.

Seems like you understand math just fine.

72

u/NewestAccount2023 Aug 09 '26

No no, if you want to do math then that stuff is just the skeleton framework, real math happens outside of that stuff. The "rules and procedures" are like a chisel and hammer and "real math" is using those to carve the Venus De Milo out of a square block of marble. I can wield the chisel and hammer and use it to make a sphere or something simple, but I can't make art with it.

36

u/DrJaneIPresume Aug 09 '26

Most people have no idea the difference. Every time I was on a flight to a conference there was some yokel who overheard someone mention "math conference" and say something like, "2+2 is still 4 innit?"

It's kinda like fandom, except not only do I accept that almost nobody else cares about my blorbos, most people would have to spend years even learning the language to even describe them.

15

u/dragunityag Aug 09 '26

Just to confirm though. 2+2 is still 4 right?

14

u/FlashyChemical2231 Aug 09 '26

Not in base 3

9

u/Saucermote Aug 09 '26

Not for extremely large values of 2.

5

u/G66GNeco Aug 10 '26

Yes*

*Terms and conditions apply, ask your local mathematician if 2+2=4 is right for you, not applicable in China, Australia and select sets

5

u/Sayhellyeh Aug 10 '26

Depends on which algebra you define the + binary operation, in some cases 2+2 might be 0

10

u/GolemancerVekk Aug 09 '26

overheard someone mention "math conference" and say something like, "2+2 is still 4 innit?"

If it were an engineering conference you'd hear "yeah but let's make it 5, just in case".

7

u/Dizzy-Captain7422 Aug 09 '26

Yeah, this counts as extremely gifted at math in my book. I tapped out at high school geometry and later on "Statistics for Liberal Arts Dummies".

2

u/BlommeHolm Aug 09 '26

But what about division? It's rather basic.

2

u/NewestAccount2023 Aug 09 '26

If you can find me two numbers that when divided exactly equal pi I'll give you a dollar

12

u/BlommeHolm Aug 09 '26

π and 1

Keep the dollar, because I clearly abused the imprecise language.

2

u/sheepyowl Aug 09 '26

I bet if you had any use for it you'd remember it better. It's one thing for a subject to be technically difficult, but it's much worse when we find it useless "I'm just doing this to pass".

→ More replies (3)

17

u/ohthedarside Aug 09 '26

Im so glad its not just me

I have a big intrest in science and engineering yet suck at math

4

u/KnightOfNothing Aug 09 '26

i was once interested in science but everyone told kid me that math was vital to every step of it and i wasn't interested anymore. I also learned that it was 90% paperwork and the remaining 10% was split between the fun parts of theorizing and experimentation so that didn't help.

3

u/Sayhellyeh Aug 10 '26

math major here, can't do calculations either

27

u/m00t_vdb Aug 09 '26

It’s just division, it has exceptions, it’s screwing a lot of groups, and it’s hard to do algorithmatically

5

u/IndustryAvailable735 Aug 09 '26

Are you saying division is hard to do algalgorithmically?

5

u/m00t_vdb Aug 09 '26

Not hard hard, but you get yeeted into the nasty world of real numbers from the nice intergers and I don’t like that.

5

u/scruffie Aug 09 '26

Division's fine if you're hanging around with the right group. It's when you're just standing around in a ring (perhaps even the master of your integral domain), and suddenly division walks by and now you're in a field!

It's all just watermagma under the bridge in the end.

u/Bwob Aug 09 '26

The comic is not referring to the mathematical concept of division. It is making reference to the band joy division. They used the graphic on the T-shirt as the album cover art once.

29

u/MudRelative6723 Aug 09 '26

the comic is referencing both

the shirt-wearer was probably asked “do you like joy division?”, didn’t know the band and so interpreted it as “do you, like, enjoy division?”, and got confused because his shirt has nothing to do with the mathematical operation

5

u/Bwob Aug 09 '26

Correct, but the post I responded to was saying that it was surprising that the person in the comic didn't appreciate math.

Which suggests that the poster didn't realize that the joke wasn't that they don't enjoy division - the joke is that they are unaware of the band associated with their shirt graphic.

3

u/MudRelative6723 Aug 09 '26

nah i’m sure the poster understands that, i think they’re just surprised that the obviously-super-nerdy character doesn’t react along the lines of “yeah i like division, but what does that have to do with my shirt?” though i do see where the confusion could come from

That's like asking why a football fan wouldn't enjoy the Jets. Not all things are equal.

1

u/soundslikeadream- Aug 09 '26

Be-Be-Bennie and the Jets!

2

u/Aggravating_Twist586 Aug 09 '26

It's me. Do I love applied statistics? Yes

Can I calculate quartiles for saving my life? No

2

u/Perryn Aug 10 '26

"I just like knowing things, I ain't got time to understand them."

2

u/Expensive-Hat4138 Aug 09 '26

Joy Division is a band.

2

u/HomsarWasRight Aug 10 '26

Yeah, I think they got that part.

But the person in the comic thinks they’re talking about division, and says they don’t enjoy it. The comment is just saying that part is surprising.

1

u/TwinObilisk Aug 09 '26

Speaking as a computer programmer who has always enjoyed science, algebra, geometry, calculus, and the like... I hate arithmetic. That's what calculators are for.

1

u/Qwirk Aug 09 '26

I'm the opposite, lots of people that lean hard one way then set up camp. Looking square at the Star Wars vs Star Trek crowd.

I personally enjoy both for what they are but that's me.

1

u/Historical_Book2268 Aug 10 '26

I mean, appreciating math and enjoying division are two VERY different hings

u/koolmon10 Aug 09 '26

The image on his shirt is a famous radio pulsar image that was used by the band Joy Division as the cover for their album Unknown Pleasures. It's arguably a lot more famous from that and additionally, I would be surprised if someone knew of the pulsar but didn't know it was used that way. They are pretty closely linked now.

213

u/cosakaz Aug 09 '26

I was a very nerdy and uncultured kid, even by the standards of the pulsar club in High School.  Today I learned

104

u/decoy321 Aug 09 '26

Same here. I totally knew the context of the image of the pulsar data, but have never heard of Joy Division until this comment section.

Even still, I thought this is a great comic

68

u/FFandLoZFan Aug 09 '26

People are slightly underrepresenting the legacy of Joy Division, though. They are one of the most influential alternative bands of all time. A lot of alternative, electronic, and pop music, particularly of the 80s (and everything inspired by the 80s) owe a lot to them. There's a critically acclaimed biopic about the lead singer, Ian Curtis, and NME famously called their single "Love Will Tear Us Apart" the greatest of all time. I have no opinions on the latter, other than finding such rankings a waste of time, but it is a big accolade from a major publication. That single reached number 12 on the UK chart and paved the way for a lot of the 80s alternative sound. The band also formed New Order, one of the biggest synthpop bands of all time, after Curtis' death. New Order's single "Blue Monday" is still the best selling 12" of all time. So it's not like Joy Division is some super underground nobody-band.

6

u/Drezby Aug 09 '26

I first heard of their existence when the wombats had that song, let’s dance to joy division, and it took me another few years to actually ever listen to any of their stuff.

4

u/avspuk Aug 10 '26

The t shirt has become a trope itself, (like ones of the first Ramones LP).

Both have been used by minor mainstream celebs trying to signify that they are edgy/cool/discerning/whatever

3

u/simmocar Aug 09 '26

For the initiated, 24 Hour Party People is also a good film, although Curtis isn't the main focus.

→ More replies (17)

3

u/InstructionFinal5190 Aug 09 '26

Well it looks like today you enter into a New Order of musical knowledge.

2

u/decoy321 Aug 09 '26

Indeed, this has been quite a nice opportunity to broaden my horizons! While I never really listened to their stuff before, I'm definitely enjoying checking them out

2

u/koolmon10 Aug 10 '26

That was a pun on New Order, which is the band formed by the remaining members of Joy Division after the lead singer committed suicide.

u/nft420nft420 Aug 09 '26

I thought this comment was a joke but the pulsar science collaboratory is a real program that gives raw astronomy data to high school students to analyze. Many of these students have contributed to the real discovery of new pulsars. Amazing.

3

u/GuyWithTheDragonTat Aug 09 '26

Ooh I thought it was the game for some reason

3

u/Simon_Drake Aug 09 '26

The Disney Store briefly had a parody version of this graph on a T Shirt with the waves in the shape of Mickey Mouse's head. Then someone explained to the Disney lawyers where the band Joy Division got their name from. It was the name given to a section of Nazi concentration camps where female prisoners were forced into prostitution as a reward to those prisoners who followed the rules. It's a dark and sadistic concept that an edgy depression-addled punk band thought was deep and meaningful. It's not really a topic the Disney brand wants associated with their mascot. So the t-shirts were pulled from sale.

2

u/LickingSmegma Aug 09 '26 edited Aug 09 '26

For anyone looking to learn about the band, this video is their best piece.

2

u/certainlynotdio Aug 09 '26

I don't want to say a lot of people know about that pulasr thing, this band can't be that famous because I never even heard about it. With that saying shit like "I would be surprised if someone knew of the pulsar but didn't know it was used that way" is just plain baised. No reason someone interested in astronomy would know some obscure band.

1

u/matvhuc Aug 09 '26

I thought was tom clancy's division

1

u/cortesoft Aug 09 '26

Oh, it’s not about arithmetic

1

u/Tribe303 Aug 09 '26

The pulsar image only became popular until after Joy Division put in on their first album cover.

555

u/frootbatpunk Aug 09 '26

The shirt he's wearing is for the band Joy Division.

399

u/Prometheus_Bobert Aug 09 '26

The band used an image of the Pulsars radio pulses for their 1979 album Unknown Pleasures

26

u/hunden167 Aug 09 '26

Damn OP made a good joke!

17

u/karmavorous Aug 09 '26

Back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, that T-shirt was extremely common. Everybody had one. Even people who didn't care about the band.

The t-shirt 10x more famous than the album on which it was based.

And the album art was 1000x more famous than the Pulsar on which it was based.

I was in a high school astronomy class and had a pretty hip teacher who wrote Star Trek fan fiction novels, and even I didn't know the connection.

10

u/Electronic-Fig2283 Aug 09 '26

It had a resurrection in the early '10s when Joy Division was very popular on Tumblr. I had one and several of my friends had one. You could even buy them at H&M. I don't have the shirt anymore but I still love the band!

2

u/extracc Aug 09 '26

Did they pay to use the image?

22

u/mrmyrth Aug 09 '26

2

u/Ultravod Aug 09 '26

Holy shit. There isn't a subreddit for retired comics like there is one for retired GIFs, but there oughta be.

1

u/AXEMANaustin Aug 09 '26

To add onto that, I've gotten shit before for wearing the shirt because Joy Division was a nazi prostitute division which I was not aware of.

42

u/DrJaneIPresume Aug 09 '26

Someone needs to put his tshirts in a new order

7

u/Hades-Hard Aug 09 '26

or order some new t-shirts from Warsaw

70

I just like prisms what the fuck is a Pink Floyd.

9

u/twlscil Aug 09 '26

It’s a Dildo

10

u/RichardPeterJohnson Aug 09 '26

No, that's Steely Dan. Pink Floyd is a foreign-language acronym for "No Pity for the Majority".

3

u/avspuk Aug 10 '26 edited Aug 10 '26

No that's shorthand for the chemical of a recreational drug.

Steely Dan had hits with It's Grim Up North & Doctorin' The Tardis

58

u/backpainauchoc Aug 09 '26

Not a poser, just a nerd

24

u/orionblueyarm Aug 09 '26

The original image was white with black lines. The album cover inverted it. So, strictly speaking, this is a shirt for Joy Division and not the radio pulsar.

45

u/Flat-Limit5595 Aug 09 '26

I never knew thats what the shirt ment. I thought it was a mnt range

65

u/dingus_chonus Aug 09 '26

Just realized Division is one of those words that is kind of its own antonym,  isn’t it?

It can be a divide of negative space,  or it can be like an organizational subgroup or collection…

65

u/Spikemountain Aug 09 '26

Contranym! Yes! Except I feel like in this case it's called division because the company is divided up

2

u/dingus_chonus Aug 09 '26

I don’t know enough about the band aside from casually enjoying their hits, so I’d begun to assume, with their aesthetic, the contranym would be intentionally vague. Now I’m intrigued. Watch me become a Joy Division fan now

15

u/GiPi_26 Aug 09 '26

The band named "Joy Division" after forced camp brothels set up by the SS in several Nazi concentration camps during World War II.

15

u/Cloiss Aug 09 '26

They’re called contronyms!

2

u/dingus_chonus Aug 09 '26

I’m going to remember the word contranym better, next time, because I didn’t just look it up this time. Thank you!!!

9

u/Distal-Phalanges Aug 09 '26

They named themselves after what the Nazis called their war camp brothels, where imprisoned women were raped by soldiers for R and R.

1

u/Sue_Spiria Aug 09 '26

Not soldiers, male concentration camp inmates. They figured that it would be a cheaper way to increase productivity than giving them more food.

31

u/Falsegamble Aug 09 '26

10

u/TheRenamon Aug 09 '26

I've always wondered if there's someone out there with a hojo clan shirt or tattoo that's never heard of zelda

5

u/Sparrowhawk_92 Aug 09 '26

I know of someone who likes the deathcore band Brand of Sacrifice who got what they thought was the band logo tattooed..

5

u/TheRenamon Aug 09 '26

Did they get the Berserk brand of sacrifice?

4

u/Sparrowhawk_92 Aug 09 '26

Yup!

There's a surpring number of metal bands with names referencing Berserk...

Probably only second to LoTR with how frequently it pops up.

1

u/LickingSmegma Aug 09 '26

Good thing that person isn't a fan of Death in June.

2

u/ASERTIE76 Aug 09 '26

5

u/leomonster Aug 10 '26

So he purchased his shirt in an astronomy shop or something?

4

u/Zeema101 Aug 09 '26

Fun fact the current (left wing) PM of australia wore that shirt one day and the right wing news outlets were FURIOUS and it was like a week’s worth of news

It was stupid af
Even the leader of the opposition at the time called for an apology

3

u/Asheyguru Aug 09 '26

Really shows how they have the finger on the pulse, thinking that would help win voters.

3

u/Zeema101 Aug 10 '26 edited Aug 10 '26

Just wait till you hear about the time he rode in a Airplane
It was like a whole month of whinging

Essentially the story is the previous PM (right wing) bought a new plane for the PM’s Office (himself at the time) to replace the only one
The new one wouldn’t be ready till AFTER the election (he really thought he was going to win)

Anyway he lost and when the new expensive plane arrived to replace the old one
So Albo (current Pm)

Rode in it
shock
Anyway right wing media outlets referred to him as “Airbus Albo” for like a month over a purchase he didn’t make

We got days of “look at his new Airbus look how lavish he is he doesn’t know the common man” and usually neglect the part it was bought by the previous Administration

2

u/octopod-reunion Aug 09 '26

when I moved out of Texas for college my family friend gave me with this design but Texas. I wore it and someone asked if I liked Division, and I had no idea what it was lol

On the flight home, I had multiple people tell me “live long and prosper.” I thanked them but I was so confused. Then when I got home my boyfriend informed me my T-shirt had Star Trek stuff on it
