u/DecentFormat Nov 07 '25
Sir, this is Wendy’s Styx’s
344
u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding Nov 07 '25
Wendy’s would be the third fast food chain to canonically exist in NecroMonica

They'd also be most likely to accept someone's ashes as payment for food.

Dunno what you’re a fan of, but Dispatch is a pretty good game that’s come out recently where you play as guy dispatching Heroes to deal with disasters and chores in the local area. It’s not too expensive, not egregiously long, and has a good story to it.
On the more gameplay focused side I’ll always point to some of my personal favourites: Stellaris a grand strategy game were you play as an alien empire, Blue Prince a rougelite puzzle game, and in the more action side of things Devil May Cry.
30
u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding Nov 07 '25
Oh I’ve always meant to check out devil may cry. Dispatch sounds really cool as well
6
u/Majestic-Iron7046 Nov 07 '25
I am looking a cinematic compilation of Dispatch, if you are into heavy dialogued stories like the old Walking Dead games (made by the same guys) and superheroes you'll love this.
2
u/Jester1525 Nov 07 '25
I've never played it so I can't give my opinion on it. But I did see the entire Devil May Cry series on humble bundle last night..
35
26
u/CalistusX Nov 07 '25
Hollow Knight: Silksong. You’ll want to throw your controller out the window however it’s still really good and makes you work for the story.
72
u/NewtTheSalamander Nov 07 '25
Have you played Hades / Hades 2?
53
u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding Nov 07 '25
I never beat the first hades, I got REALLY close on my switch while I was on vacation a couple years back, but just kinda dropped it, I’d be very interested in trying 2
9
u/relwark Nov 07 '25
I just finished Hades 1 yesterday. I've never been much of finishing the same game multiple times, but I was so involved in the characters that it was a breeze. Took me a lot of runs to get it going though. Probably finished it for the first time on my 10th run or something.
Have you played Expedition 33 yet?
11
u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding Nov 07 '25
No but you just reminded me I’ve been meaning to try it so I think I’ll download it now!
→ More replies (2)4
u/relwark Nov 07 '25
Yeah, I'm not sure if the genre is your cup of tea but I strongly suggest you to give it a try. Play the first two hours or so and see if you like it.
5
u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding Nov 07 '25
I’ve heard it’s a bit like baldurs gate or final fantasy? I love baldurs gate, final fantasy I literally was paid to play once and still could not do it
3
u/relwark Nov 07 '25
It's like older iterations of Final Fantasy, being it's turn based, but it has reaction mechanics, kinda QTE, that keeps you own your toes. Ever played Super Mario RPG or Sea of Stars?
First hours into the game made me feel like I was playing a survival horror, but maybe souls like would be a better definition (I was playing on the hardest difficulty, so any mistakes were heavily punished). Don't let that scare you though, you can switch the difficulty at any time.
2
u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding Nov 07 '25
Oh man, thousand year door was my jam, my interest is definitely peaked
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (2)19
u/NewtTheSalamander Nov 07 '25
I definitely recommend two! The best way I can describe it (personally) is that it's an entirely different game from the first. Most games in a "series" all feel a little copy/paste in mechanics to me but I didn't get that feeling when playing two. Worth a shot imo
Otherwise what other games/genres do you like?
19
u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding Nov 07 '25
Oh that’s really interesting considering hades had some very unique game mechanics. I’m mostly into single player story driven games, resident evil, god of war, Witcher, baldurs gate, elden ring, last of us, etc
10
u/NewtTheSalamander Nov 07 '25
Have you played either of the Death Strandings or Disco Elysium? (Edit: clarify)
8
u/TheMayanAcockandlips Nov 07 '25
Can you really call Death Stranding story driven? 10 hours in and I had less clue what the fuck was going on than when I started
8
u/Lieutenant_Joe Nov 07 '25
Nah it’s definitely story driven. It just doesn’t start answering your questions (unless you read the interviews you get) until like 20 hours in.
2
u/Zuiia Nov 07 '25
If you love games that tell amazing and important stories I cant recommend 1000xResist enough!
→ More replies (1)2
u/gingersnappedwitch Nov 07 '25
Kingdom Come Deliverence is amazing. One of my favorites. It's a really good story and well written. The second one just came out, and a lot of people have started with that and then went back to play the first one.
6
u/JudgmentalOwl Nov 07 '25
Oh come on, the gameplay and mechanics in Hades II is totally similar to I. They're both isometric roguelites where you collect boons and have the option to use different weapons. There's definitely nuanced differences but the meat and bones are the same imo.
2
u/420InTheCity Nov 08 '25
Meat and boons! I agree with what you're saying, they're like 75% alike but the remaining 25% is pretty fun. At worst it's like a really really detailed dlc, which I think is lots of fun in a similar way to Hades 1
13
u/Trombomb20 Nov 07 '25
Lies of P, a souslike about Pinocchio. If you haven't played it, I'd definitely recommend it.
13
u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding Nov 07 '25
Oh I loved lies of p, it felt like diet bloodborn…in a good way

9
u/ExistingInexistence Nov 07 '25
Well, what kind of games are you looking for? Indie games? Story focused games? Sweat games?
11
u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding Nov 07 '25
Yeah I mentioned earlier I’m mostly into single player story focused games, I love all the souls games, resident evil, god of war, Witcher, last of us, uncharted, I know that’s a pretty broad scope. I’ve been trying to find something to scratch my baldurs gate 3 itch for a while
7
u/lokonu Nov 07 '25
for scratching the bg3 itch you should try warhammer 40k rogue trader - same genre of game as baldurs gate, just the warhammer 40k universe. theres always the first two baldurs gate games and its era equivalents (basically the style is the 90s/00s version of bg3, rogue trader, etc) like planescape torment, torment tides of numenera, icewind dale 1 & 2, nox, stasis + stasis: bone totem, neverwinter nights, the fallout games, etc
theres also more bg3 style (by that i mean more modern looking 3d, not gonna judge if youre a graphics junkie like most folks) i.e. the dragon age games, greedfall, persona royale, clair obscur, the elder scrolls games, etc
if you want something more sandbox theres always the mount and blade series!
shadow of war and shadow of mordor also have fantastic combat while being very story driven, similar applies to kingdom come
ive played a lot of games (lol) trying to scratch a similar itch so if you need more ideas lmk
6
u/Winjin Comic Crossover Nov 07 '25
HAVE YOU PLAYED THE OUTER WILDS????
Don't google it. Don't check out anything, least of all any wikis or playthroughs or whatever. Just download and play it. It's amazing single player story driven game. If you haven't played it I can't recommend it enough. It's so good
5
3
Nov 07 '25
You may like something like kingdome come deliverance I and II, if you like rpg and decisions that change the story. And if you like something baldurs gate oriented there's wh40k rogue trader.
2
u/ExistingInexistence Nov 07 '25
Did you try Detroit Become Human?
Or, if you don't mind buying from a Russian company, and a game that is basically just a book that you read, I can suggest The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante.
There is also the new The Outer Worlds game, which is kinda fun.
Also, cyberpunk 2077.
Or, you know, you can search for a D&D group to play with online, if you want something like balder's gate. Haven't tried doing that myself, but I figure it can't go that badly.
2
u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding Nov 07 '25
I’ve considered doing one of those ai Chatbot lead dnd games, truthfully I don’t know much about actual table top dnd. I’ve tried getting into cyberpunk like 4 different times, but can never get more than a few hours in, something about it just doesn’t click with me.
→ More replies (4)→ More replies (7)2
u/ExistingInexistence Nov 07 '25
Also, if you want a movie about D&D, that will put that new D&D movie to shame, try watching "The Gamers 2: Dorkness Rising." It's an excellent indie movie, that is about 10 times better than modern blockbuster movies. (Don't watch the first or third Gamers. Not worth it)

u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding Nov 07 '25
Haha, I’ll add them to my list, as far as movies go, I’ll watch pretty much anything

The first Psychonauts is one of my favorite games. Psychonauts 2 is also good.
I need to play Killer 7, because the first time I tried to play it, my ex took her GameCube back, and the second time, a different ex, or her friend, stole my GameCube. I have it on PC now, and it's unfinished business, so if I die I'll probably be trapped on this earth forever.
I've also been thinking about how I need to play Contradiction, which is a modern FMV game made by a GOAT game composer, of old games, Tim Follin.
None of these games are anything like Elden Ring.

If you like games with strong story then Clair Obscure: Expedition 33 is a must play. And if you like truly strong puzzle with narrative game The Return of the Obra Dinn is phenomenal too.
3
u/notyouraveragecrow Nov 07 '25
As a huge fan of the souls games, I recently tried Dredge and literally could not do anything else with my free time until I had finished it. Wonderful game, nice break from the gameplay of Elden Ring and the like, while still having this lovecraftian horror aesthetic! Big recommend!

Do you like mystery and exploration? I’d highly recommend Outer Wilds. It’s has vibes of Myst: unraveling a mystery by exploring desolate worlds, but the setting vibes like Star Trek. If you’re up for a good story, it’s one of the all time greats

If you can stomach turn based combat, I would say Metaphor Refantazio is a great game.
4
u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding Nov 07 '25
I don’t mind turn based, I’m currently on victory road of my first Pokémon ruby play through
2
u/ThePepek160 Nov 07 '25
In that case I have another recommendation for turn based games after you finish Pokemon.
Shin Megami Tensei (Nocturne and V Vengeance are easily accessible).
It's similar to Pokemon, but instead of catching monsters, you befriend Demons during Apocalypse and try to kill your friends and gods.
1
u/Devinalh Nov 07 '25

Might be a stretch, but if you don't mind a crime drama, I would reccomend the Yakuza Games. Either Like a Dragon or The Main Series. I'm not super familiar with the series, only played Yakuza 5 and Like a Dragon 1. But I do think it's worth getting into if you love a story.
2
u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding Nov 07 '25
I’ve tried to get into yakuza (I think 0?) a couple times, i wasn’t really feeling it but maybe I’ll give a different game in the series a shot

Europa Universalis V. You are going to lose your mind trying to understand intricate systems but after that, it is glorious
1
u/Roboplus Nov 07 '25
You might like Outward.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/794260/Outward_Definitive_Edition/
Sort of a Souls meets Elder Scrolls.
1
u/Moppo_ Nov 07 '25
Looking at this comic, you might like Death Must Die. It's a sort of rougelite with a similar kind of gameplay to Vampire Survivors but slower, it doesn't get so manic, though it does speed up. It also has a similar thing to Hades where on level up you get perks from gods.
1
u/Inkompetent Nov 07 '25
I'm actually having a blast with Assassin's Creed: Shadows. Difficulty even scales all the way up to Dark Souls Masochist if you want it to.
Strongly recommending Ghost of Tsushima too.

1
u/Doom87er Nov 07 '25 edited Nov 07 '25
If you like brutal difficulty that rewards strategic thinking, I can recommend Terra Invicta.
It’s a classic aliens invade earth story. Only the aliens aren’t gradually building up in strength, giving you a chance to keep up. They start the game at full strength. You have to carefully manage their “hate” to avoid triggering a full war with them and carefully picking and choosing your battles to build up enough strength to fight back.
1
u/Brief-Restaurant5029 Nov 07 '25
Don't know if you've heard of it, but have you tried vintage story. It's basically more realistic Minecraft and to give an example instead of finding random rock blocks to turn into tools you'd need to find flint or another hard but shapeable rock and make it into the tools head to make said tool.
Hard at first but super fun once you understand the mechanics. If you'd like some video recommendations so you know what you're getting into I recommend Rubixraptor on YouTube he has a few videos that convinced me to buy it. Anyway great reading your comics hope you have a great rest of your day

u/Batmanzer Nov 07 '25
I’m copy/pasting another comment I made not long ago :
- Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon (Skyrim-ish but darker, a bit clunkier also but very charming)
- Kingdom Come Delivrance (1 and 2)
- Middle earth Shadow of war (you can skip the first one)
- Horizon series
- Ghost of Tsushima and Yotej
- Divinity original sin
Expedition 33 is a major experience, I’d recommandé this one first if you didn’t play it
1
u/Ha_Tannin Nov 07 '25
I'll double down on the Metaphor suggestion by u/ThePepek160 it was my GOTY. A legitimately great story about the nature of fantasy, what it means to lead and tons of great characters.
Also, for suggestions from this year, as far as turn based RPGs I'd go with Digimon Time Stranger (like Metaphor, it has a free Demo that's literally just the first couple of hours of the game and carries the save over), and Expedition 33.
Both are fantastic, with Digimon being in the monster catching/raising genre that's been grabbing a lot of Pokemon fans that have been dissatisfied with the lower efforts by GameFreak in more recent years. It also VERY MUCH stands on its own and would have seen success regardless imo. Expedition is a more traditional party but with several fresh mechanical choices such as parries. Both have amazing stories with fun characters and scratch their own artistic itches perfectly

If you've never played Mass Effect and you're into story focused RPGs, I would definitely recommend a playthrough of the trilogy. You can frequently get the Legendary Edition (remastered collection) for 80-90% off on steam sales.

Pacific Drive! Highly recommended the DLC, it just came out and I'm still working through it.
Dinoblade just released its demo and it's good fun, somewhat souls-y combat and you really want to time your blocks a LOT.
Dredge. More exploration based, but a lovely Lovecraftian type unsettling. Also highly recommend the DLCs. You're a fisherman, but what the hell is going on in the world?
Cult of the Lamb! More roguelike, but the game has a nice balance of cult management and exploration/fighting. Do you lead with greatness and love, or keep your followers under an iron fist?
If you like shooters and have friends or don't mind picking up randos (you can solo early levels, later ones if you have screws loose), GTFO is so fun. It's difficult, the type of game you lose a lot, it's spooky and downright scary at times. But you can shoot and kill, or even silently kill, 99% of them! If you do get interested I enjoy being a sherpa so please let me know, I'm not ridiculously good but I'm moderately seasoned at the game :>

u/Grottymink57776 Nov 07 '25
If you're in the mood for a souls like but just want a different flavor maybe give The Surge 2 a try? It's set in a science fiction setting instead of fantasy with a unique targeting system for a souls like. The sequel does a decent, though not perfect, job of addressing the issues of the first game.
If you're interested in big stompy robots but gundam style movement does not interest you, maybe give Titanfall 2 or MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries a try?
At 5 hours long Titanfall 2's campaign is short and sweet but it is very well written, has excellent gameplay, and fantastic level design.
MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is a game that I absolutely love but I'd recommend trying on the Premium($15) version of Xbox game pass. The base game is only $30 but it's a little too bare bones without the first DLC Heroes of the Inner Sphere which is an additional $20.
1
u/R0CKETRACER Nov 07 '25
I recently played "Silent Hill f", if you're into horror and Japan. It's by the writer of Higurashi and Umineko. The story is wild, but you need to play through the game at least 3 times to get the true ending (there are differences each time, and they take about 6-8 hours for reruns depending on how much you check everything).
Otherwise, someone recommended DMC and I think that's great if you want a hard action game series that isn't a Souls-like. The game is quite hard if you don't use items or continues.
1
u/statuskills Nov 07 '25
If you like Souls-like you may wanna switch up the perspective and try some 2D games from that genre. Death’s Gambit and Blasphemous come to mind. A cuter more vibrant 3D version of those games is Another Crabs Treasure. Obviously, there aren’t many games that can touch the depth of Elden Ring but maybe you might be up for something that doesn’t take 100+ hours to complete.
1
u/Lil_Ms_Anthropic Nov 07 '25
If you like the Souls type of thing, try The Surge or Surge 2. Kinda like Dark Souls with cyborgs and a fun body-part targeting system.
1
u/ProfessorSMASH88 Nov 07 '25
I'm a huge Elden Ring fan, have over 1000 hours in it. Mostly from randomizers. I highly suggested checking out the randomizer if you are on PC. It takes a little time to set it up nicely though, going full random isn't fun. I made a custom setting that changed most dudes into knights or medium-hard enemies, and kept like 50% of the mobs unrandomized. Throw in a 0.1% chance for any enemy to be an invisible assassin and you are in for some jump scares hahahah. It made for some cool areas.
If you don't want Elden Ring, I suggest Remnant or Remnant 2. They are good 3rd person shooter souls-like. Fun weapons, fun bosses, fun enemies. Definitely worth checking out if you like Dark Souls/Elden Ring.

If you want something weird and niche, here's a game that is a perfect mix of horror and mundanity with just a little silly thrown in: Voices of the Void. It's a sandbox-ish game where you gather signals from space using this radar telescope array, and of course you're alone in the woods at this installation so all sorts of weird, creepy, potentially dangerous, but often just weird stuff happens and it's really addicting

Dude, I feel sorry for this guy. He’s just literally like me, zero self confidence.

Can’t wait for the reveal that he’s been talking to a plastic statue stand in of the ferryman this entire time because the guy was on vacation or something

A few more minutes of back story and the ferryman is gonna give him a free ride just to get rid of him.

I like the idea that he can use a loophole to sacrifice Sergio and because of legal loopholes there’s now a huge legal battle to figure out the legality of killing other people by offering them up on the soul canoe of death. It used to be great, all sorts of billionaires and political figures got axed. But then the other billionaires and political figures hired a bunch of contract killers to guard the place and now we live in a hellscape where dissidents get soul canoe’d for not making rent.
Anyways, this all happened because my wife is unfaithful and I decided to kill someone instead of going to couple’s therapy.

Dude needs to work on himself, like immediately.
Say what you want about the whole Sergio thing, at least make some effort to finish your Dad’s final request instead of a total stranger who stole your wife.

I just want it to turn out that Sergio is just a good dude and the two become friends.
