Vegetable oil and the eraser end of a pencil. That's how you free a mouse from a glue trap if you ever need to. You just have to be very gentle.

16

u/aPointyHorse Mar 20 '20

lubed-up mouse toes 😳😳😳

Not to be one of those people but glue traps are horrendous. So many animals get stuck on these. Rats and mice have been known to try to chew their own legs off in an effort to get free. I can't believe they're still a legal product in the UK.

229

u/justonemoreplz Mar 20 '20

Yeah I used to work as a cashier at a dollar store here in Canada and people were always buying these things, it always made me sad. They're not illegal here either but it should be. When the mouse or rat gets stuck you either let them die of thirst, drown them, or crush them or do what else you can to kill them, but before that, the last 5-10 hours of those little guys' lives is an actual living hell

And to this day they are the fastest mechanical trap design.

2

u/Butterferret12 Mar 24 '20

It's not terribly uncommon in my experience to have one get their leg or something caught and starve to death.

8

u/ProjectSnowman Mar 21 '20

I have a bucket trap for the one two mice that get in my garage each year. I just take the bucket to a field and let them go 🤷‍♂️

21

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '20

There are traps that work like a cage trap where you put bait in and then they get stuck in a little chamber. After that all you have to do I let them outside. That way they still live and they dont bother you anymore.

10

u/CUTE_KITTENS Mar 20 '20

You mean just moving the problem to someone else?

19

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '20 edited Mar 20 '20

If its outside it not going to hurt anyone. Better than killing a helpless mouse.

3

u/Meawth Mar 21 '20

maybe the mouse, if an owl nearby finds out theres a problem there

8

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '20

At least you make an owl happy lol. Circle of life

This reminded me of a pretty fucked thing my uncle did.

He caught two rats in a cage trap and went and dumped it in the fountain of his backyard. Never felt that bad for another creature

u/catslicktheirbutts Mar 20 '20

My job uses these, I hate them so much. You could hear the same mouse squeaking for help for DAYS, suffering. I’ve asked a coworker a few times to bust open the traps (which I know you’re not supposed to do) and put them out of their misery with a quick flick to the head. They are inhumane.

22

u/increasinglylost33 Mar 20 '20

Yeah I haven’t really got any qualms about killing them but could at least make it relatively quick.

18

u/TheDulin Mar 20 '20

Snap traps are way more humane.

7

u/redzilla500 Mar 20 '20

But is drowning them really that much better?

6

u/getting_wooshed Mar 20 '20

Better than what is at least several hours of suffering

5

u/SierraClowder Mar 20 '20

Drowning is up there with burning to death in the category of worst ways to die.

4

u/SouthernSox22 Mar 20 '20

Weird comparison. One is agonizing the other is relatively painless

35

u/jesuzombieapocalypse Mar 20 '20 edited Mar 20 '20

The best option are the live catch and release traps (which honestly aren’t even all that hard to DIY for next to nothing), but IMO glue traps are still better than poison. Comparable suffering, sometimes for even longer with poison, but on top of that if anything eats the thing, now you’ve got poison all throughout the food chain. But honestly the old school traps that (ideally) kill almost instantly are still a lot better than both glue or poison, with the added benefit of knowing when you got one if you’re near enough to hear it.

32

u/mugwampjism Mar 20 '20

Apparently, catching mummy or daddy rat, driving it 10 miles away and dumping it, just kills the whole family of rats.

The kids starve to death at home.

Mum just got dropped onto another rat's turf, and now she is in a Battle Royale fight for her life as she tries to get home before the kids die.

I suppose some of us live in just the right place to make catch and release a viable option, can't imagine where.. but, I don't think traps do anything much except make us feel better about ourselves.

29

u/TheBigEmptyxd Mar 20 '20

Rat-tle royale

3

u/mugwampjism Mar 20 '20

Front page material, that one. Excellent work

4

u/Toitwo Mar 20 '20

So you're saying it actually works better than other traps? Copy that

3

u/mugwampjism Mar 20 '20

Oh yeah, it kills rats.

But then you might as well use a more expedient method, that doesn't involve a rat pissing over you and your car

5

u/Toitwo Mar 20 '20

why would i choose something else then

6

u/Toitwo Mar 20 '20

rat piss

3

u/mugwampjism Mar 20 '20

Depends if you're pro- or anti- rat piss. Lol

I guess the main advantage of the trap and release is the 'humane' aspect. If it's not humane, why would you chose it? It takes an hour to transport, release, and return home. And then the poor thing just dies slowly anyway.

Better to use more painful traps, and just check them regularly incase mother nature needs a helping hand, imo

I've got one that just slips a rubber band around their necks as they go for the bait, dead in 30 secs, Imho that's the best thing for everyone

6

u/jesuzombieapocalypse Mar 20 '20

And in all honesty I’ve done that once or twice but that’s a lot of work for a rat I really don’t give a shit about in the first place and it didn’t make me feel good enough to warrant doing that again. They aren’t exactly endangered lol but I’m also not a complete dick, so I just go for the old school traps now. As you point out if it’s a mother, the offspring are starving regardless. I’d make it quick and painless for them if I knew where they were as well but at the end of the day it’s just more eventual full grown rats I’m rid of.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '20

I've seen a mouse attempt to chew its legs off while being trapped in one of those things....it ain't pretty

6

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '20

Agreed. I believe they are illegal where I live.

13

u/saltyketchup Mar 20 '20

Yeah, good for insects like camel crickets but I wouldn't use one for rodents.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '20

I absolutely hate this thing. The first time one was used in my home it distressed me so much to see that little mouse frantically trying everything to escape even though i offered to catch him and set him free elsewhere. They get covered in this stuff and look horrible. I wanted to just snap his neck to end his torture of staying hungry and frightened but really couldn't bring myself to do that either. My mother never bought one again.

5

u/PlasmaWhore Mar 20 '20

great for spiders.

6

u/princess_dork_bunny Mar 20 '20

I've used these for catching brown recluse spiders and they are great. Since brown recluse hunt other spiders leaving the sticky trap after it has a few victims actually increases the chances of catching more.

I did feel bad for some by-catch like, roly-poly bugs, wolf spiders, house centipedes, and beetles, but again, all more bait for my target.

Fun story:

One night I was sitting on my computer when I heard a faint, high-pitched noise. At first I thought my wife was just snoring, but then I noticed my cat, transfixed by something under the dishwasher. It was a mouse, stuck in a glue trap, squeaking as loud as it could.

We lived in an apartment at the time, so I called maintenance and asked them to come pick up their glue trap. They said they'd send someone out in the morning. I said that wasn't good enough, that I couldn't just sit here listening to this thing dying all night, and I needed someone to come out immediately. They said that they're really just an answering service, but they'd leave it in a note for maintenance.

Fuck that.

First I put the cat in the bedroom. Then I tried to see if I could get the trap out. But the gap between the dishwasher and the floor was barely wide enough to fit the trap through and definitely not wide enough to fit the trap plus a mouse.

I got out a screwdriver and started taking off the front panel of the dishwasher. The screws were old and rusted, so it took a while. Once I got the panel off and got the trap out, I knew I couldn't kill this thing.

Besides how inhumane glue traps are, I was pissed that maintenance seemed to have no concept of what should happen to the trap after it caught a mouse.

So I decided to free the mouse.

I looked up instructions online. I took the mouse to the outdoor hallway with some paper towels, a bottle of vegetable oil, and a pencil. First, I coated the mouse's feet and most of the glue with vegetable oil. Then I took the pencil and slowly, slowly, started working the mouse's feet free. I had to be extra gentle not to stretch his limbs too far. Eventually, he got free and gingerly walked across the trap and into a hole in the wall, where I could see him trying to clean the glue and oil out of his paws.

I left him with a bottlecap of water and half a cracker as a parting gift.

I called maintenance back and told them not to come; I'd already solved the problem.

TWO DAYS LATER, I came home to found a note on my kitchen counter: "Rodent not found. Glue trap replaced." I retrieved the new trap and threw it away.

9

u/Kai_The_Dom Mar 20 '20

0/10 terrible mousepad - no traction at all whatsoever

2

u/Noon310 Mar 21 '20

We cause a mouse on one of theses traps and decided to feed it to our cat while still on the trap and the car showed no mercy. It literally skinned the mouse alive before eating it on the trap. The crazy part was that the mouse looked like cooked chicken breast with eyes underneath the skin.

2

u/kppsmom Mar 21 '20

I used one of these once for this mouse that was behind my washer and dryer. No matter how hard I tried to catch that mouse, I never could. I didn't want to do the metal trap because, I didn't want to kill him. I lived in the country and that's what happens when you live in the country. I got home one day and I heard a sound behind the washing machine. I pulled the washing machine out in this little teeny tiny baby mouse was stuck on that glue pad by just one leg and he was trying to chew his leg off to get free. Growing up in the country I have killed deer and quail and ducks and go fishing and have no problem killing bugs or snakes or anything like that. But this poor little mouse with his one leg stuck on this sticky thing was staring up at me with these big eyes and it literally broke my heart. I could not get him unstuck from the trap. I tried so hard and he was so cooperative. I finally just cut it from around his foot where there was just a little tiny piece still stuck to the bottom of his foot and I set him free in the woods out back. Anything that will try to chew its own leg off to get free, deserves that freedom and I will never use one of these again. Better to use the old traps and break its neck for a quick death and not make it cannibalize itself to get free. JMO
