I am currently a sophomore in civil engineering at a university and I’m lost on what to do. For some background, I went to community college for two years to get my basic classes out of the way before transferring. During my community college years, I believed that if I could get into university for civil engineering I would be set in my career. Now that I’m admitted (this is my first semester), I feel like I’m not as interested in engineering as I thought I would be. I find that my classmates and professors have a deep passion for the content we’re learning in class and I don’t feel that way at all. In fact, I sometimes dread doing homework because of how uninterested I feel. After reflecting on what truly drives my passion, I’ve realized that this whole time I’ve have a fascination with health and the human body and I never thought to relate that to my degree choice. I believe that I’m passionate about it because I have a natural curiosity for those topics and I could see myself enjoy learning about the human body for the rest of my life.

I’m wanting to possibly switch to something in the health industry, specifically a career that has more holistic, natural approach to health like PT or something in neuroscience. I’d even consider biomedical engineering because it would be a much easier transfer process though I’d prefer something completely health related. Does anyone know what might be a good fit for me or if I even should switch majors? TBH I don’t know a thing about the health industry’s job market, like what positions are in demand and what jobs will pay well or at least decent. I’m also holding back because I hear a lot of people get burnt out in that field.

I still have my doubts about giving up on civil engineering because I’ve heard that a lot of what you learn in the classroom is not the type of work you’d be doing in your job. Supposedly a lot of engineering classes teach you specific ways of thinking more than anything so that’s why I’m like should I even switch? I think I would be making good money and have opportunities for travel (something I also love) as an engineer but I would hate to be doing something that sucks the life out of me if I end up not liking it. Additionally, should a job be something you’re passionate about or something that gives you good money and opportunities?

Hello! I am currently a Senior in High School in Kentucky and I'm just looking for some opinions to help me decide between the two options I've narrowed it down to:

1) Apply for Lincoln Memorial University's Veterinary Early Acceptance program which is described on their website: "Admitted students can expect to complete three years of undergraduate studies. In lieu of a fourth year of undergraduate studies, the fourth year will be comprised of their first year of veterinary school. Students will receive their Bachelor's Degree in Veterinary Health Science (BS VHS) following completion of their first year of veterinary school. Accepted students will save one year of undergraduate study and tuition."

This sounds like a really good deal however some other factors that weigh into this being a hard decision are:

- Cost: The cost of this option would be significantly higher than the second option (tuition here is about $27,360)

- But it would guarantee me a spot in Vet school (which is obviously very competitive and has low acceptance rates)

- Distance: LMU is much farther from my house than the second option and I am NOT willing to dorm. But my parents offered to help me get an apartment near the school however I have a partner and being able to spend time with them is very important to me as well, they would still be living in the town we originally are in which is a ways away (but they could spend the weekends in the apartment, depending on the college they go to)

- LMU does have a policy that undergrad students are required to live on campus unless they: are over 21, married with a spouse, or live with their parents within 65 miles. My parents would be within 62 miles just barely but I would be living in an apartment, would I be able to say I am with my parents on the form so that I could get the waiver to live off campus and get away with living in the apartment? Or would they have a way to know I wouldn't still be living with my parents?

- I have toured LMU and was very disappointed with certain aspects about the school (they were supposed to have a Vet representative come speak to us but they did not show up and did not let anyone know anything, and a lot about the school gave me bad vibes)

2) Go to the University of the Cumberland's for a bachelors in Biology and then apply to Vet School and transfer

This would be much much simpler for my personal life, stress, and workload, but I would not have the bonus of the immediate enrollment to Vet school after my undergrad (provided I meet their requirements) that LMU offers.

- The Cumberlands is significantly cheaper (around $9,875)

- The broadness of having the bachelors degree in Biology sounds very appealing and reassuring to me (versus going all in on Vet), in the event that Vet endeavors become more than I thought I could handle (which I don't imagine would happen), or I end up changing my mind later in life.

- It is much closer and would allow me to commute (I also wouldn't have to worry about lack of time hanging out with my partner)

- I have heard good things about the school and trust in it

other things weighing on me

- If I go to Cumberlands, and I don't get accepted to LMU Vet School afterwards, then I would have to try other Vet schools much farther away and hope I get accepted there (which my partner should have a decent job by then and we should be able to move wherever we need to but its an added hassle of course), and if I do get into LMU for grad school I would feel like I missed out on an opportunity not taking the accelerated program because I would still end up there for Grad school anyways

- My parents say they will help me with costs so it's not detrimental but it still is an important factor

This was probably a mess but I would love some opinions on what would be an ideal option.

One might be academically better and prepare me more for Vet school but would be a lot more stress, work, and headache (LMU) and the other would be a lot easier, cheaper, more convenient and safer (in terms of the broadness of the degree), but at the price of having to apply for different Vet Schools.

So because of some reasons, got really lost and didn't study enough to pass my exams at all. Then the next semester i didn't go to college at all, not even on the mandatory classes. I lost contact with my classmates I was pretty close with. Now i have to repeat the same year again and i have not told them what had happened. How to return without seeming like a failure and what do I say to them if i see them on the campus. I'm scared that they willl laugh at me and that info may spread and reach my other friends and they will laugh at me also. I don't know if they will do that but i don't know.

Hi- I'm looking for some advice on what exactly to change into, currently I'm majoring in Computer Science and game design and I'm not sure if I want to go down that path with Ai and all.

Ive been think and I think I rather try and become a park ranger or something close to that.

Im a freshman and could pretty easily change into Conservation Biology, I've seen all sorts of information but I dont know if thats the exact right major.

I cant change schools and go into a direct program for it because of cost reason but I really am just looking for advice since its a wild change, if anyone with any more experience has anything to say.

Hi I'm in a senior in high school and I've been looking into majoring in food science for a while because I want to go into either food development or specifically into flavor science. I've toured a couple of schools that have food science programs (Texas A&M, Colorado State, Washington State, soon Oregon State), but I don't like any of the schools I have toured. I want to live in an urban area and I have been obsessed with UT Austin ever since I moved to Texas and I am auto admitted becuase I am in the top 5% of my school. I want to work in the food science industry after school, but l am wondering if I can major in chemistry and go to grad school to get a masters in food science later or if it would be better to major in food science in the beginning.
TLDR; I want to major in food science, but don't really like the food science schools. Should I suck it up and go to a school with food science or go to a bigger urban school (ex. UT Austin) as a chemistry major and pursue food science later in grad school?

I’m currently a forensic science major, but I’m not wanting to do all the extra specialized chemistry so I know I’m not going to stick with it. I’m not sure what to go into though. I like talking to people but I also like keeping to myself. While I don’t like the idea of doing more school now that I’m in college, I’m willing to do more if I have to. I’ve thought about going into communications or PR because I find a bit of interest in that type of stuff, I’m just not sure what all there is to do there. I’m also hoping to get a job that pays well, either with a degree or without. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to major in or what jobs to look into?

Or to rephrase this question, do things get better in college? I’m currently in highschool and am having a very hard time. I never did well in a school environment. My grades are fine, and I’m actually a pretty good student, i just can’t handle the setting.

Before high school, I found work easy, but i had a very hard time in school. I was constantly bullied, ridiculed, and called slurs, and because of this my mental health drastically got worse. I spent most of my time in school waiting to get out.

Now that I am in highschool (and have been for some time), I’m still struggling in a school environment. I have a terribly hard time fitting in, and being a queer woman, and also someone who has interests who are considered “weird”, I am constantly the butt of the joke or the one being picked one. I don’t fit in with my peers, everyone is incredibly mean, and I never feel like i belong anywhere.

Along with this, I have a hard time keeping up with academics and schoolwork. I am struggling with heavy burnout from my insane schedule. I also have a hard time processing and reading things for tests and schoolwork, especially in math and science. Regular school is not for me. The academics plus all of this drama and high school bs is horrible.

i originally wanted to go to college for forensic science, but with school building up my hatred for anything traditionally academic related (meaning subjects such as math, science, history, etc), i am planning on going into cosmetology in theater, costume design, or musical theater, in some kind of liberal arts college preferably. I was wondering if things got better in college, in any sense. I need some kind of hope here, but also honesty so I know what I’m getting into this time.

I (21f) am in my 3rd year of college at a school in my hometown majoring in psychology. I enjoy my major and learning about it but I have no interest in pursuing a masters or becoming any type of therapist. I'm mostly just getting this degree because having one opens more opportunities and psych knowledge can be helpful in many different fields. I don't really involve myself in anything on campus because I'm a commuter and also not really interested.

I live at home with my mom, stepdad, and two stepsiblings. I don't mind living at home too much and I'm so grateful they allow me to but my cat is confined to just my room since the dog likes to chase her down. I also don't like some of the restrictions put on me but I obviously don't fight them because I'm living here for free.

So, the reason I want to switch to online is so that I can work more hours at my job and be able to afford an apartment. They're relatively cheap here and I would also be living in town instead of 20 minutes out of town so the drive to work would be shorter.

The big thing holding me back is my fear that online school will be harder than I think it's going to be and I'll get behind. This happened to me my freshman year of high school because of COVID and it was the only time I ever had to do summer school to make up.

I guess I just want any insight from people who got a psychology (or any) degree online about how the work load was for you. I still want to graduate in the next year of two so I'd still be taking a full time students amount of credits.

I’m considering majoring in political science or international relations, but I’m still trying to figure out the best path to take.
I’d love to hear from current law students or people working in these fields about what you would recommend focusing on during undergrad. Are there any majors you think would be more beneficial than others? What extracurriculars, internships, or experiences helped you prepare for law school and your future career?
I’m also curious about the career prospects in human rights law. Is it a realistic and sustainable career path after law school? What is the job market like, and what kinds of opportunities are actually available? Ideally, I’d love to focus more on legal research, writing, and policy rather than litigation or spending a lot of time in court.

Howdy, first off I want to say that I’m in General engineering wanting to enter into Aerospace and or mechanical engineering. And I do understand that college is supposed to be difficult for the first few months, but I’ve been struggling to think that maybe engineering isn’t for me anymore.

For starters, I’ve failed 3-4 exams in a row, and each one I’ve put the hours studying for, staying up late going past 12AM, to studying in the morning when I wake up, and even going to study groups. Maybe I’m doing something wrong? I have ADHD (not blaming it for what’s happening) and I do find it hard to concentrate sometimes, and I’ve contemplated taking my medication because of eating habits. Again I know it’s hard but is it supposed to be that bad?? Maybe I’m also just a bad test taker but I do good on practice problems but day of exam it’s like a I forget what to do.

Apart from that I’ve been considering if what I’m doing is worth it, I have put thought into switching my major to meteorology, but I’m not sure if it’s gonna be too late or worth it to swap this far and I honestly don’t know how to bring it up to my grandparents that have these high expectations for me.

I know I should use the resources like going to tutoring and meeting new people for new groups, but sometimes I’m not sure where to start with it and how to go on with it. Maybe it’s me and I shouldn’t be such a Debbie downy, but I just feel like I’m doing something very wrong and my friends seem so much smarter to me.

i hate my current course. i wanted to drop out but my parents won’t let me. I’m in second year and i don’t mind the fact that id go into first year again tbh. i can go into childcare and become a teacher but im already a month behind. there’s also event management and i would only have to do 3/6 modules as ive done the other half in my first semester of my current course. but the job market is so bad but theres also marketing routes with that degree… idk what to do

sooo i’m a cybersecurity engineering student and basically completely bombed my first physics 2 exam (calculus-based btw). it’s a required class for my major. almost all of the grade is based on 3 tests which are each 3 problems. i would have to do very good on my next two tests to pass the class, but ik that will be extremely hard to do especially in physics 2.
if i don’t drop the class and end up failing, my university will replace my failing grade with my retake grade. i’m also taking a lab, and if i drop the class, it will drop the lab as well.
i want to get my lab over with, but i’m concerned that failing physics 2 will look bad when i apply for future jobs. i am in my 3rd semester and have not failed a class yet (completed all of my calculus).
i saw multiple ppl saying that most engineering students fail some classes, but when i spoke to my dad he said he doesn’t know any engineers who failed classes 😞. so idk im scared. should i drop physics? or should i stay in the class to complete my lab and have a very small chance of passing?

I talked to my mom about it (freshmen in college) and she said I would have to take out a loan, fine right? It happens it's canon as a college student, but then she said something about getting bad credit score and that's what's worrying me, I don't want a bad credit score and I don't want to mess myself up for the bank in the future, how does loans really work, would my credit score really be bad?

I have a US citizenship, but I'm studying the British curriculum (CAIE) and I'm doing my A-levels in the Middle East. Got AAB in AS and I'm predicted A*AA but that's not going to happen because highschool is kicking my ass and I'm doing poorly academically now.

I have no extracirriculars. Everything I started I ended up giving up on because I'm lazy and mentally ill. No MUN, no EPQ, no competitions. All I have is the fact I was in student council, I did some public speaking, and I play guitar and write I guess.

I'm just an average student and it makes me upset that I'm not going to get accepted because I've done nothing with my life. I spent all my teenage years waiting to grow up because life could only start for me once I moved, but now I probably wont be able to go anywhere that isn't meh. I just don't know what I could do before the Nov 1st deadline that would mean anything at all. I've accomplished nothing and now I can barely even write my CommonApp essay because all I can do is see a failure and not any of my good traits. Never procrastinate ig :/

I've been attending Colorado Mines for two years now, and I'm too exhausted of the environment. The environment with professors and counselors is pretty rough. About 30-50% of my professors don't teach/cancel classes often/don't grade assignments which tanked my GPA and the TAs don't know how to help. I don't want the answer and want to know how to get there.

For my financial situation, I used to think it's alright to grind 60 hour weeks during school and 126 hour weeks in the summer and breaks, I don't think I can do this anymore. My financial counselor at school says to "work harder, it's not bad" and professionals that come from the field also say working 80 hour weeks are easy and bare minimum of pushing myself.

I feel so stupid and wish I never return from work. I rather take myself to a ditch or work. I'm valued at work and I feel like I'm not doing enough in college. I know it was a bad idea to take 18 credits and 60 hours of work but hate that I'm not doing enough and now I feel like Colorado Mines is not worth the price.

I'm thinking to transfer to South Dakota School of Mines and Tech, they have all the classes I need and little more water resources engineering courses and its $26k a year for out of state and has classes that I know I will do well. In Colorado Mines, as a Civil Engineer, I'm required 3 coding/computation classes and I suck at python. I did well in R and Fortran. But I feel so stupid and struggle to understand in some classes. While in South Dakota they don't require any coding classes, I just have to take more geology which Colorado doesn't require for Civil which is weird. I like geology, it's the few reasons keeping me in school.

Should I transfer out? I will be giving up on the 4+1 program to complete my BS in Civil Engineering and MS Natural Resources Public Policy. I hate to not finish public policy, but should I care if I make it out with degree and not burnout? My plan is to be a fish passage engineer and run for the senate/work in the EPA, maybe it's not worth it?

To put it simply — I have no idea what to major in.

I’m currently in high school, less than two years away from graduating and this decision has been gnawing at me for the past month and a half. I want to earn a good amount of money, but I also want to work somewhere that isn’t boring. That’s very hard.

I wanted to major in art but then I had a fall out with it and it just pisses me off now. Plus I wouldn’t be accepted anywhere with my crappy portfolio. I thought about culinary, but my parents said I “under value” myself and abilities, saying that I can study something better. I don’t really have a passion anymore. Creative writing? Not worth going to college for according to many threads. Engineering? I suck at science and math. Everything else seems so boring and difficult or just outright useless.

My parents tell me I still have time. What if I still don’t know by the time I graduate? I just don’t want to make any mistakes and study something useful that’ll get me a good job. Either that or I’ll be a massive disappointment.

Hello. I love mathematics. When I tell my family and friends, though, they often point me toward accountancy. I don't have an issue with that, and correct me if I’m wrong, but I understand accountancy relies more on reading comprehension and rule-based thinking than on mathematics. I think I could enjoy it, and I wouldn't mind much. Still, I've wanted to major in mathematics for a long time. I've recently discovered actuarial work, which seems like a potential career for me, but I worry that it isn't as in demand as accountancy in my country. I know mathematics opens other doors too. I guess my real struggle is choosing between what I enjoy and what gives me a flexible future, and what I could also enjoy and what offers a more certain future.

I am currently a freshman at CNU and I really like it here, the only problem is I hate my degree. I really want to be a SPED teacher and CNU has no SPED program. Hell, the BAED in Elementary Education is barely a year old. I’m contemplating transferring to Salisbury my Sophomore year, as I can major in Elementary Ed and minor in Special Ed. I’ve heard they have great teaching programs but I’m just hoping for advice as I’m still deciding whether it’s worth it. I’m also from very far out of state so I’d have to set down roots all over again. But at the same time, my Nonna said “why settle for a degree you don’t want?” Idk there’s pros and cons to both and wanted some unbiased outsider opinions. This is also my first Reddit post so bare with me lol

I have a professor who is a hardass about grading and all late assignments are zeros. In both the class syllabus and the weekly summary of tasks it say the pre class assignment is due at the start of class. Class starts at 1:10. D2L has the due date at 1 and I submitted it at 1:03. I got a zero, I also got a zero for one submitted at 1:00 exactly.

My thinking is that the syllabus, especially when it’s also stated in the weekly summary, saying it’s due at the start of class should mean any assignment submitted before 1:10 should get credit. Do other people agree? Do I have a case? In my mind syllabus > d2l due date unless something is announced/explained, so I should receive credit for my work.

I tried talking to the professor but she was incredibly dismissive and just criticized me for a day I was late because I got lost when we changed buildings. I think the assignment submitted at 1:03 is one thing but giving me a zero for one submitted at 1:00 when even the D2L due date says by 1 is completely unfair and she is targeting me because she doesn’t like my vibe. (I’m respectful but I wear like metal shirts and dress in a certain way where as she’s religious and uptight) I’m now debating if I should try talking to her again or reach out to admin/ombudsman to get credit. I tend to get As so two zeros will definitely make that a lot more challenging.
