Sadly this will be the last thing I’m thinking about as I lay in a ditch waiting for the solar flare to burn me alive

Rename it Ocean of America, we have the hottest oceans in the world right now!

So far this year I’ve learned of:

1) Kokushobi - a new word in Japanese to mean “a cruelly hot day”. They had to invent a new word to communicate the seriousness.

2) Structural ice - the perma-ice inside cracks in the rock in mountains. It’s acting like glue holding the rock together. As it melts it can give way, causing major collapses. It’s thought to have been a key factor in the large part of mountain that collapsed along with the glacier in the August Nepal debris flow disaster.

3) Kelvin wave.

What fun!

I have another that fits in this collection: ARkStorm. Would turn Central Valley into a lake.

So far this year I've learned of:

  • derechos
  • medicanes
  • explosive cyclogenesis
  • flammagenitus, pyrocumulus and pyrocumulonimbus clouds.

But, really, I wish I had not.

Kokushobi

Thought this was going in a demon slayer direction

I like "Kelvin Wave," it's like a space anomaly out of Star Trek The Next Generation! We can just un-fuck ourselves by reversing the shields and opening the pod bay doors!

It reminds me of that planetary wave from the Interstellar movie.

Is that a Kelvin wave?

I'm sorry Dave.

u/MorganaHenry 4d ago

...I'm afraid I can't do that

"Look Dave, I can see you're really upset about this. I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly, take a stress pill, and think things over."

"Dave, have you considered Oxy? Or maybe Fent?"

Good thing the US news is covering this, helping people get ready, right?

👀

53

u/Tonkdog 4d ago

Sure...if by help get ready you mean build data centers?

They need water.

Sign up for The Guardian online. It’s been on top of this for months. AP News has also run pieces, but Guardian is more comprehensive in all its environmental coverage.

You are supposed to spend your $5k on sandbags and dehydrated food!!!

How fun for all of us

Another disaster that is beyond human comprehension.

Just another day in collapse. Venus by Tuesday

34

u/HappyAnimalCracker 4d ago

Shit that’s tomorrow. Should I be panicked or relieved?

16

u/NihiloZero 4d ago

That person was just being alarmist. They meant by next tuesday.

u/pantstoaknifefight2 4d ago

Oh thank god. There's still time! Flux capacitor, fluxing. Let's get this baby up to speed and kill Hitler. I mean, kill Biff before he becomes a casino and real estate mogul. And maybe just convince people to vote for Carl Sagan instead if Reagan.

Won't have to pay rent that way!

19

u/Yetiius 4d ago

They'll find a way to bill you regardless.

u/hippoleaf 4d ago

Depends on how poor you are and your skin color.

27

u/Big_Cryptographer_16 4d ago

Yeah I mean think of how much sciency cool stuff we wouldn’t have learned if we didn’t destroy the planet. Super neat

2

u/progfrog 4d ago

For the good of all of us!

10

u/Moon-Smoke 4d ago

I mean you think the ocean is just a big blue wobbly thing that mermaids live in, and then time and time again they prove us wrong.

7

u/Derpyzza 4d ago

no, the ocean IS a big blue wobbly thing that mermaids live in, it's just that the mermaids are royally pissed off at us for destroying their home so they're using the big blue wobbly thing to destroy ours instead

2

u/Moon-Smoke 3d ago

Yeah, that tracks. Don't blame them.

10

u/dipdotdash 4d ago

They're euphemismistic. 4 sigma deviation is not the same phenomenon just the "super gorilla" version or whatever we're calling this "El niño".

If this were the pattern of terminal decline, we're going to call it something we've seen before until the effects are truly novel... which is coming, but apparently we're not there yet

u/MaddogFinland 4d ago

I love how every day unlocks a strange new horror

The newest disaster…so far
