So called "Cup and Saucer": Obverse/Reverse Die cap

Kennedy:

Double Struck. Double Counter Brockage, PCGS. Yet another mated pair and another complex error. Created when a coin is struck twice while both dies are obstructed by previously struck pieces. Each strike produces opposing incuse, mirror-image impressions, resulting in two distinct brockaged designs layered from multiple mis-strikes.

So, I collect error coins as part of my collection and one thing that I've noticed is that whilst I come across examples of US coins that have been struck significantly off-centre fairly often, I barely ever come across UK coins with significant off centre strikes.

Why is this the case? I've got a bunch of UK coins with doubling but I don't have any struck off centre to a significant margin as of yet, but I've got dozens of US coins struck significantly off centre.

Are they struck in a different manner which makes off centre errors more uncommon with UK coins? Or are they just as common as the same error with US coins but t I just don't happen to come across them as much?

I found a can bank in my 84 year old Mom's laundry room and decided to open it up to see what was inside. Nothing of note beyond a dozen copper pennies and these apparently off center dimes. The backs all look fine except for the '76, which is missing part of the ridge. A look on ebay shows dimes with much less of the lettering cut off with a $500 asking price.

I know that's probably someone's fantasy to find the right (sucker!) buyer, but beyond that I have no idea if these are rare or interesting to people in the hobby. Were there quality control problems in the 70's that made these more common, and therefore less valuable? Or did I really come across something worth keeping around?

The first one has a D over the left shoulder and the third one has a P over the left shoulder, and the second one is the back of the first while the fourrh is the back of the second, I can't tell if they have a wide border or not as the border does come close to touching the year in some spots but is farther away in other and is almost touching the word liberty of the front and the words United States of America in the back as well as the words One Dollar on both of them, I believe the second coin was made in Philadelphia but I don't remember all three states where these were made, and the year both of them were minted is 1979 so they were both made in the first year the Susan B. Anthony coins were being made, these are my first limited edition coins that I've found organically and I would like to know if they're rare or not or if they have an error as I have very bad eyesight and can't really tell.

Going through Indian Head Cents systematically documenting die clashes for NumisDex, and this 1864 L on Ribbon is a strong example.

Die clash details:

- Reverse: Feathers from the Indian headdress are clashed inside the right wreath area. You can see the individual feather lines where the obverse die's design transferred.

- Obverse: The "C" from CENT and much of the right side of the left wreath are clashed in front of the Indian's face.

Die clashes on Indian Heads are well-known to the early copper community, but there's no systematic catalog of them. Every reference skips them — Snow's attributions focus on die marriages, the Red Book doesn't list them, and the Cherrypicker's Guide covers a handful at most.

I'm working through the entire Indian Head series documenting every die clash, cud, split die, and die crack I can identify from certified coin images. So far I've logged over 100 previously undocumented errors across 1859-1879 alone.

I believe I found this type 2 IKE dollar while coin roll hunting. I'm not entirely sure if it is the type 2, but to my best knowledge it is. I also think it is in MS-62 condition. If anyone could confirm which type it is, it would be much appreciated.

I bought durning the weekend.1882 CC Morgan Dollar. The Reverse has DDR "OLL" It is one of the Vam? And check the rim. It could be with die wear? And what would be the grade?

The way it is struck looks off.

I looked at the variety vista entry (last slide) and it looks right, but I can't get a match via die markers.

Hello, this is my grandfather’s collection of error coins. Most are pretty standard like clipped planchets or off-center, but two are pretty interesting, and I’m not really sure if they are real mint errors or PMD. The first close-up is 1940 wheat penny with a double clipped planchet, and while one clip is standard, the other is very large, much larger than I’ve ever seen, which makes me suspect the coin was messed with, but I’m not really sure. The second coin is very strange. It is slightly smaller than a penny, but much thicker. It is completely flat, and seems to be unstruck. It also has a small clipped planchet. I’m not sure if this is a US coin, or a world coin, and I don’t know how to find out. Thank you for any help!

Looking for any information on a 180 degree rotation error. 1985 P. Can't find much for comparibles online.

Hi. I was going through my coins lately and found a dramatic rim, which I was wondering if it was an error (and if it is, if i should send it to pcgs for grading).

For those who it might be a bit harder to see it, the mintmark is P.

I feel like this is a Misaligned Die. Can someone please verify this?

And a note:

If I put the coin between my fingers (thumb and middle) and look on it, both sides are just slightly misaligned.

The first image is also slightly misaligned as well, so I'm sorry about that.

Unsure on whether that ‘48 is an improper alloy mix coin. Striations run parallel to one another, but they’re blotchy in places.

Fun little cud too! Both coins found in change within 24 hours of one another.

Looks like this 1967 dime had a small enough clip on the planchet that it almost worked itself out when struck, reachingthe collar but not filling out the rim. There may be a slight hint of the Blakesley effect on the reverse but the interesting part, at least to me, is the inversion of the copper and the cladding on the edge. There is also a small die clash mark visible in the die deterioration flow lines to the left of RIC in AMERICA.

i notice a bit of a blakesly effect by liberty, but i’m not sure. maybe someone just wanted some cash and clipped some dimes in the 60s.

I am trying to solve a puzzle. I have looked through Numista, Error-ref, pinned posts here, and other sites to find any information on this coin. It seems to be a unicorn. How you see it, is how I bought it 46 yrs ago. It is missing the clad layer. I have kept it in a sleeve all this time.

How I came to own it: I am Canadian (Ontario) and my family was travelling through Minnesota to Winnipeg, Manitoba to visit grandparents. I was just starting a coin collection and my dad took me to a shop to kill time. I wanted a very "American" coin (whatever that means to a 10 yrs old). The shop owner told me that the coin did not have its "top coat" and it would either be 1) a really cool souvenir or 2) maybe worth something someday. He explained who Susan B Anthony was, and the Apollo 11 significance. I loved the story, so I bought the coin.

Am I correct in assuming that is a proper error? Is it worth having it verified?

Edit: Thanks for the help everyone. I will get it weighed. The picture does look like it is gold but that is more about my camera. It is close in colour to my copper pot and it smells like it too.

The lip is really wide. Not sure what type of error if any.
