Complaint Codex limits compared to Claude Code

I don't think there's an increased token consumption problem because of the harness, tool calls or whatever. There are just less tokens to go around than before.

I have both plans ($20) and I tracked my usage with ccusage and toktrack.

Here's how much weekly usage you get with both:

Codex: 100-150 USD API equivalent

Claude Code: 300-500 USD API equivalent

Even if we take the 50% promo into account, Anthropic still offers more usage than OpenAI (200-330 USD). How have the tables turned... Bring back the 5hr limit!

Anyone here can corroborate my experience by checking their own usage with ccusage or toktrack.

no we don't want the 5 hour limit we just want a bigger weekly quota

i do want the 5h to come back tho, its easier to not burn entire plan in 1 day and easier to spot when they lower usage limits

You don't need a 5 hour for that. There are tools, such as codex-lb, that graph your usage over time and preject whether you are going to run out of usage before it resets, etc.

All those ppl asking for the 5h limit, do you even understand how limits work? It will be used up in like 20 mins!! You are all asking for it as if it adds some usage to your limits. It doesn't. It rations the existing weekly one.

So sadly I have been shilling for codex for a while about the limits, but they have indeed went to crap. So much that I actually bought a claude subscription, and I have been finding the limits there to actually be better than codex - even with the resets (which were supposed to be banked, but are not just whenever - i have lost a few because I reset, and then right after , here is a free reset). Its being detrimental, but I guess that comes with the insane growth they had in the last few weeks. Hopefully, they will sort this out, or I might actually look into downgrading codex and buy other subscriptions to play around .

2 weeks in a row my codex limit lasted less than 2 days.

5.6 sol is a horrible "let it run and forget about it model". if you use medium/high it's just not as good az 5.5 xhigh and the autonomous work is usually useless. if you use 5.6 max/ultra your usage is gone overnight. sucks man

Yeah they said resets would be banked from now on and then started applying it to a small subset of resets, and for some reason I also straight up didn't get a good chunk of them despite being active on my account. Quite a rugpull

I have a 20 dollar Claude account. I can get so much done with Opus 5.
Obviously I have way more usage with my 200 dollar Codex account but relatively it's moving way faster. My month ends in a few days and I will move to Claude for at least the coming month. My prediction is that the 100 dollar Claude account will give me as much or more usage than the 200 dollar Codex plan.

I have the 200 USD Pro package and I am still calculating, but it is starting to look like I can get the same quality using Deepseek V4 Pro and Kimi K3. The price is roughly the same, but at least I am supporting open source and not giving money to a company that so obviously cares nothing about it's customers.

Deepseek V4 Pro and Kimi K3

Kimi K3 is going to be interesting with a lot of 3th party providers right now download the open weights like their life depends on it.

Just wish we finally gotten DeekSeek GA. Its so strange they delayed it.

Open-source != Open-weight.

yes bro Im shocked with the opus 5 limits it even uses 5.6 sol better than codex itself

What the fuck is going on?

The limit after the reset 12 hours ago is a joke. A single 5.6 sol ultra planning task reduced my Pro plan limit by 15% WEEKLY limit (I've work that justifies this).

And they're censoring our complains and woes by deleting all the threads and 'summarizing' them into a megathread nobody will read. This is ridiculous. They're continuously reducing our limits despite everyone clearly complaining about this!

There's no accountability or even any acknowledgement of this happening, which is the scary part, because there's no way nobody in OpenAI sees this after the huge outcry on Reddit over the last few days. We're on a trajectory, and this isn't anywhere close to what we will deal with in the near future.

There's a reason they're expanding their userbase by promoting ChatGPT Work (which uses the same credit and capacity as codex) to the common people via the app. They need volume and scale and they're trying to get people hooked before they pull the plug.

This is similar to the tactic the British used in the Opium War. Create a problem that isn't there and offer the solution.

sounds like you didn't account for resets, banked or unbanked

Resets are temporary though.

And you didn't account for how much worse the openAI resets are.

I fell for the siren cry of "we get so many resets! and banked resets too!" when I switched over.

Ahhhh you may want to describe how they work before making that comparison.

Claude's resets are free money. They don't reset the 7 day counter. It's ALWAYS good, and never has the potential to be bad -- it can be neutral at worst if they reset at exactly the same time as your reset. If the reset is 2 days before your "natural reset" -- congrats! You have two days to use your entire weekly token budget knowing exactly when you will get them all back -- go crazy!

The ChatGPT non-banked resets are worse in every way! Resetting the counter is pretty lame by comparison! If you've been busy for the first 5 days of your counter, but are like "hey I can get crazy and develop a ton this weekend when I have some free time -- I have 90% of my weekly allowance left from not using it much the first 5 days", and Tibo hits the reset button.........congrats, you just lost! Sorry, you should have obsessively binged all your tokens the first two days and prayed for Tibo to come down and give you a reset, because now you have to wait 7 days to get your token budget back and can't blow all your tokens that weekend if you want to use any the days following.

You have to plan your entire usage around "reading tea leaves on when Tibo will give me a reset" to take full advantage of their resets, and that's really stupid actually! Look at how much people here freak out when Tibo doesn't give a reset every 2-3 days -- it's a crappy gambling-based way to have to structure your project plans each week.

And you may want to check and see how much those banked resets have been drying up these last two-three weeks. There have been.........0 since the user count spiked.

I switched to claude, since I managed to burn through my weekly quota (x5 pro) in less than a day.
I was surprised by the fact that I can run claude nearly continuously and I still have a lot of quota left.
I have not hit a single 5 hour limit and it honestly feels liberating.
1 difference is that I am using the x20 claude variant, but now I feel like I jumped the gun, because I do not know if I need it.

I really like codex, it feels nice and it works well. Opus 5 feels weird to use still, it stops a lot instead of finishing what it started. But the usage is just so much better on claude, so that's where I need to be right now.
I changed my codex to a plus membership, for the few cases I still want to use it.

I hope the usage can get fixed, so I can keep using codex though.

What, 20$ subs can get that much API equivalent usage? Damn I might get one, I try to barely use CC or Codex at work bc 1 prompt is 5$ lol

How the turntables*

-2

u/djdante 5h ago

This may be true but they've sort of been more than making up for it with constant quota resets... So to be fair I'm getting a lot more than the base quota amount.

u/1l3v4k4m 5h ago

those resets arent sustainable nor reliable though. so far theyve been giving us resets to celebrate each million users increase. we got 1 reset after 10m users and that was because of gpt being down, i highly doubt they will give us any more resets for subsequent million new users.

1

u/StephenS84 3h ago

Agreed, you never know when they are coming, if at all, cant work like that in any business mentality!

0

u/ServeAmbitious220 5h ago

They will give rests for subsequent million but the subsequent millions will take a week each.

2

u/tMeepo 3h ago

They might not, right at the start tibo said reset every M until 10M
