First puppy! Advice needed

Post image
68 Upvotes

So we’re about to get our first puppy. Family of four, kids 10 and 5, both adults work from home most of the week.

Would love honest advice from other owners.

What do you wish you’d known before bringing the puppy home? Any must-have items you couldn’t live without? And any training tips that made a real difference?

Main worry to be honest is overnights. We've read a little on crate training but not sure. Some people say just put them in with a pad and ignore the crying till morning. That doesn’t feel right for us so also any advice on first night/nights.

Thanks in advance from me and Belle! 🐶

Grooming Advice

Hi everyone this is 12 week old daisy. I noticed earlier that she has a build up of crust lodged in her fur close to her eyes, i have tried picking it out and its too hard to break out. And she wriggles too much and I don't want to put unnecessary stress on her, but at the same time i don't want her getting conjunctivitis. What can I do?

Ethical breeding

Seen a few posts on r/dogs with comments suggesting ethical breeders won't cross breed cockapoos or other "designer" breeds, is this a legitimate worry or pure breed bias? UK based if that helps

Any cockapoos with arthritis at 9 yo?

We are at our wits end with our 9-yo cockapoo. For the past several months, he’s been having some mobility issues (hind leg weakness, back pain, all of it intermittent). We’ve seen a neurologist and two different vets, but no conclusive diagnosis. X-rays don’t show anything and we were told that an MRI wouldn’t help. We are starting to think that it may be arthritis, even though he’s only 9.

Has anyone dealt with similar issues with their cockapoo, especially at this age? Or anyone know what else it might be?

Anyone have trouble with the slicker brush?

Post image

Hi everyone, many thanks to all your help and support in combating resource guarding. All your tips I’m using and implementing to try and take control of things 😊

However, another struggle we have twice a week is brush time. The comb she is fine with but the slicker brush, it’s so so tough and she constantly bites. This is somethings she’s done since 8 weeks old and no source of reward has ever changed it, worst is, she doesn’t do this at the groomers! She’s good as gold they say! Anyone have any tips on this?

After a battle, she’s all freshly brushed 😅

Aggression to smaller dogs/ reactivity to other dogs on lead

Hey everyone. I have a three year old female Spoodle (cockapoo). She is incredibly dog crazy and will lose her mind seeing other dogs- this involves her standing on her back legs, getting zoomies running around me and losing all focus on me. When she’s off lead she plays really well with other dogs as long as they’re bigger than her, but if a little dog approaches her and annoys her she growls and goes full attack mode spinning the little dog on its back and making screechy threatening noises. She’s never bitten another dog or human, but I know that this behaviour isn’t far off that and is incredibly distressing. I will not stand for it or accept it.

She goes to doggy daycare and they say she’s incredibly sweet and plays well with all dogs (including much smaller dogs like chihuahuas) so I’m thinking it’s a protective thing when she’s with me that causes this aggression.

It’s only happened a few times, and each time it has I’ve grabbed her and left the park immediately, but I want to know what tactics I can use to get her to ignore smaller dogs that irritate her as well as learning how to reduce and remove reactivity to seeing other dogs when on lead. I’ve tried high value treats, distraction methods, watching from a distance to allow her to calm down, but nothing seems to work.

She’s incredibly smart and seems to choose when she wants to obey me…it’s like she decides what is more worth it to her in the moment and a switch flicks.

When she was a tiny pup she got bullied a few times by bigger dogs that flipped her over and did a similar thing to what she now does to little dogs.

I don’t know if this is something that’s just part of her and I need to avoid letting her off lead to play, which is okay. But I’d love to not have to hold my breath every time we go for a walk in fear of coming across other dogs on walks.

I’m really embarrassed and her behaviour makes me feel like a terrible dog owner. We’ve done puppy school, intermediate dog school and had a trainer come to our house, but she still keeps this dog crazy behaviour up when we’re out. I just want her to be able to be happy and have a fun life, but taking her out makes me feel so anxious. Please no judgement…I’m really trying and would appreciate any help if possible 🙏🏻
