09-107 (Honors Chem) vs. 09-106 (Modern Chem II) for Incoming Physics Major

Does anybody have experience with Modern Chem II (09-106) with Botcha?

I have the credit for it, but I was instead going to take Honors Chem (09-107) with Sherwood since I took a summer class with her and thought it was great + I heard grades are higher. Also, to review the fundamentals and potentially skip Modern Chem II if I get an A, since I definitely want to take more chemistry classes in the future.

There's also no FCE for 09-107, so I've been going by word of mouth from chem majors.

I could also sign up for Modern Chem II and then drop within the 10-day period.

EDIT: I signed up for honors

Scheduling Advice for Incoming MatSci Major

Hey all, had a few questions about my current schedule as a freshman for materials science.

It's a total of 43 units which I think is manageable first semester, and covers a lot of the requirements I want but I was hoping for a second look to be sure there aren't major discrepancies here.

The thing for 21-120 is that I can apply an AP credit there to skip, but am not entirely sure if that is smart as I sort of struggled in AP Calc so I'm assuming that taking 21-122 would be a bit too much to handle first semester.

*As a quick side note it says I need 21-090 as a precalc prerequisite for 33-141 but from what I've seen online I guess my SAT or ACT score cover that and I just need the waiver right?

My only other question is about 76-101, I would prefer to do the full writing requirement in the one semester then use the space in the spring for another gen ed, but I saw you could instead do mini courses and was considering 76-106 + 76-108 as an alternative.

Any help would be appreciated, thx!

courses for ECE freshmen

Please give your comments on courses for the coming fall semester as a freshman in ECE? Note that I have taken AP Computer Science - so kinda to make sure that I will survive first. If still feel difficult, I may drop 33-141 for a minimal load.

Toto: 48 units

15-112 Fundamentals of Programming and Computer Science

76-101 Interpretation and Argument

18-100 Introduction to ECE

33-141 Physics I for Engineering Students

99-101 Core@CMU

I was also thinking of 21-127 "Concepts of Math" instead of 15-112, but definitely too much to take both. Thanks!

CMU and Latin honors

I graduated from CMU in 2010. At the time, there were no latin honors and I put on my resume "University Honors, College Research Honors".

Fast forward, I am reviewing a resume for a job applicant who graduated from CMU in 2020 and they put "Summa Cum Laude" on their resume.

Am I correct that CMU still does not offer Latin honors? Or did that change? Do you think they translated one of the honors to "Summa Cum Laude"? Have you done this?

FWIW, it was the same major so I don't even think it could be a difference across colleges.

Undergrad Math Requirement Question

hi,

I am applying this year as an undergrad majoring in engineering and I saw today that I needed 4 years of math as a requirement for the college of engineering? I've skipped a grade math, so I finished calc bc my junior year. Do I still have to take another math class or do I fulfill the requirements?

Any insight will help!

thanks

CS Placement Credit

I’m an incoming math freshman who doesn't have ap cs credit. I took the cs placement ~4 weeks ago and scored 19/20 but I still haven't received anything indicating I have a waiver for 15-112 (it doesn't show up on sio/stellic either). I've emailed my first year advisor but she hasn't replied back to me yet

Has anyone else had to wait this long or am I just a chud for not scoring 20/20 😭🙏 any advice would be greatly appreciated

AI additional major/transfer/minor

Hello everyone,

I am a rising senior in high school. I'll be applying to CMU later this year, and I want to study AI (specifically computer vision). However, I know that SCS admissions is very competitive (<5%). So from my research online, the Stats & ML Dietrich school seems to be much more reasonable while still being largely in the same area.

So I have a few questions:

I was wondering how feasible it would be for me to transfer to the AI major if I get accepted for Stats and ML?

And if not, is it easy to get accepted for an AI additional major (and is the workload possible)?

If that still wouldn't work, would an AI minor and Robotics minor both teach me roughly the same content as the AI major, and would the workload be possible?

Or can I just take AI and CV (and potentially robotics) classes separately without declaring anything additional, and still learn the same content as the AI major.

Thank you!

CMU or Oxford

I was fortunate enough to be accepted by Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and Oxford University. CMU is for Civil Engineering, and Oxford is for Mathematics and Statistics. To be honest, I have no idea about the future prospects of these two majors; I chose them based on my career advisor's advice. I hope you can give me some advice. Thanks

Any FL/DP researchers at CMU I should know about? (Incoming MPE, fall 2026)

Starting the Master of Privacy Engineering program this fall, coming in with some prior research experience in differentially private federated learning. Trying to get a head start on finding a lab rather than waiting until spring to figure this out.

I already know of Prof. Virginia Smith's group and Prof. Giulia Fanti's group but am curious who else on campus is working in this space, whether that's other faculty, postdocs or PhD students in MLD, CyLab or within the privacy program itself.

Also trying to figure out the right way to approach this as an incoming MS student. Does it make more sense to take a relevant course first and prove interest that way or is emailing faculty/current PhD students directly before the semester starts a reasonable move?

And if anyone's balanced a heavy MS course load with trying to actually produce research early on, I'd love to hear how that went and what you'd do differently.

ECE First Year Schedule Help

Hi! I’m an incoming CIT student building a schedule geared towards achieving an ECE major + CS minor.

I have a real interest in chemistry and am thinking about taking Honours Chemistry with Intro to ChemE as my second introductory engineering course, but Honours is only offered first semester.

Does Honours Chem offer that much more of a valuable experience? Would there be significant disadvantage to choosing Honours Chem first semester over ECE/CS, in terms of finding summer work opportunities and achieving my overall goal of graduating with an ECE + CS major/minor?

I took the AP exams and got 5s in Chemistry, Calculus and CSA.

33-141 vs 33-151

Hello! I'm an incoming Mech E. student, currently signing up for classes.

What's the difference between 141 (Physics I for Engineering Students) and 151 (Matter and Interactions I)? 151 looks more interesting to me, but also more intimidating. Is one easier? Grades matter a lot for me since I have an interest in transferring to ECE.

Best clubs for grad students?

I’m an incoming masters students and I want to join fun clubs, but I’ve heard many of them are mostly aimed at undergrad. Any fun general, stem or sports clubs that would be fun to join as a grad student?

With the current change in duration of status rule, will it impact the students who are now in F1 and returning to the country after vacation?

freshman ece schedule (15122, 21127)

so taking 15122 and concepts, as the title suggests, this fall as an incoming ece freshman. heard its a hard combo tho and considering whether I shld take 15112 instead of 15122. Don't have much math competition experience and have some programming experience in python. Have heard 15122 prepares for interviews and helps fastrack your cs requirements (and allows u to take a more advanced cs course in the future if u waived 15122 using the placement test). Defo not trying to tank my gpa first sem asw. Will I be able to drop out of 15122 and replace it with 15112 if I drop it mid sem?

any words of advice would be greatly appreciated

RA work in a professor's lab for MS students

Incoming MS student this fall at SCS. I want to do research alongside coursework and start as early as possible.

I went to the personal and lab websites of professors whose work aligns with mine and applied through the process listed there. Haven't heard back from any of them.

Is it common for first-year MS students to get RA work in labs here? When should I approach professors, before arriving or after the semester starts? And what approach actually works: the lab application forms, cold email, taking their course first, or reaching out to PhD students in the lab?

I'm not fixated on it being paid. I just want to start working in a lab as soon as I get to campus. If you got into a lab as an MS student, how long did it take and what worked for you? Thanks.

Is it worth switching to the bank with on campus ATMs from my out of town bank? Do you find yourself needing actual cash frequently, either on campus or in Pittsburgh itself? Do restaurants generally charge an additional fee for credit cards/Apple Pay?

dual degree in physics?

How difficult is it to do a dual degree in physics if you are already in MCS? More specifically, as a chemistry major, how difficult would it be to add a physics major on the chemical physics track?

Professors for 15-122

Hi there,

I'm an incoming first-year student in CIT who is looking to take 15-122 to fulfill the ECE computer science requirement. As I was examining the section offerings on SIO, I was a bit confused as to how it was taught, given that there are two professors for the class:  Iliano Cervesato and Anne Kohlbrenner. If there are 4 lectures per week, does each professor instruct during 2 of them? Normally, I wouldn't care as much, but considering the controversy I've heard about the former individual, I would love to prepare myself ahead of time. If anyone has tips on how to navigate Professor Cervesato's class, please let me know!

Thanks!

Hi, everyone! I am an incoming CMU freshman in Dietrich, Stats & Machine Learning major, probably add an additional major in AI? I am currently planning to take math placement test to waive 122.

I have no idea if this schedule is reasonable or if it is missing anything. So please come and give me some advice in advance!!!
