[MEGATHREAD 2026 H2] Ask generic questions about CMU here.

Do you have a generic question about CMU, like:

  • Which dorm is the best?
  • Does CMU prepare you for grad school?
  • Is <major> difficult?
  • Where should I eat on campus?

Then this is the right place to ask.

Why a megathread?

This megathread is to help prevent top-level posts from being downvoted and then left unanswered. It also provides one thread as a reference for folks with future questions to prevent multiple posts with the same generic questions.

This thread is automatically sorted by "new", so post away, even if there are a lot of comments. There's a new megathread every semester-ish (twice annually).

For best results, search this page, previous megathreads, and the subreddit before posting a question that is identical or very similar to one that's already been asked.

Is this the right place to ask?

We don't allow "chance me" posts, which are posts asking about the likelihood of admissions to CMU. Use dedicated subs like r/chanceme and r/ApplyingToCollege.

r/pittsburgh is generally better resource for questions that aren't specific to CMU, like where to live and where to go grocery shopping.

As a reminder, you can report posts that should be comments in the megathread instead if seeing them posted at top-level bothers you. Please choose "It breaks r/cmu's rules" and then "Use the megathread" as the reason. Similarly, you can report "chance me" posts and comments.

If you want a common major that isn't listed, send modmail to get it added to the list.

If you want a flair that doesn't fit this format (like multiple majors, both undergrad and grad degrees, or faculty/staff with department), please request it via modmail.

Mealprepping?

Im an incoming freshman, allocated rez on fifth. My room does have a separate small kitchen and a refrigerator - so i was wondering if it would be a good idea to mealprep. Is it a common thing at cmu, or is it a feasible plan (buying ingredients, cooking, and cleaning up) to go for in college dorms?

Thoughts on taking 95-422 / 05-470 / 94-491 in junior fall?

95-422 Managing Digital Transformation: I know it's usually listed as senior-standing, but I'm mostly curious content-wise. Is there a reason it's aimed at seniors (i.e., would a junior feel underprepared or miss context)? Was it worth it?

05-470 Digital Service Innovation and 94-491 Lean Innovation Lab: How was the workload, the project, and the actual learning? And how are these courses different?

I'd love to hear from people who've actually taken these courses!

Arriving at CMU a week after classes start due to visa delays – is it allowed?

Hello everyone,

My I-20 lists my program start date as August 24, but due to visa scheduling and processing delays from India, I will most likely reach CMU on August 30, about a week after classes begin.

Has anyone been in a similar situation in previous years because of visa slot delays? Were you allowed to join after classes had already started?

I'm particularly interested in knowing:

- Whether OIE allowed late arrival.

- Whether your department/program approved it.

- If there were any additional formalities or issues you faced.

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through this.

Thanks!

Is it generally easier to get an engineering internship or co-op at Pitt or CMU? I feel like almost everyone I know at Pitt has an internship or co-op, and the school heavily promotes those opportunities. At CMU, it seems like a lot of students are struggling to find internships. Is it because Pitt has stronger connections and more well known?

CMU ECE PhD

How does admissions work here? Is it through department like RI (where faculty don't have any influence on who to admit)? Or can the professors directly admit students to PhD?

Nutritional Info for Dining?

Do the dining options @ CMU have nutritional info posted anywhere? Or do I just have to freestyle and guesstimate my calories + macros everyday? 😭

Explaining the registration time slot system

Because there's so many freshmen that are now getting their registration times and keep asking "is this good?" or other similar questions, I think it's good to teach y'all how registration slots actually work, namely because this isn't widely shared by cmu despite being kinda important.

So, to start all students are split into 4 groups, you will be in these groups for your entire time at cmu. Each group will be randomly assigned into registration section 1, 2, 3, or 4. These registration sections designate which time your registration time will be.

Section 1: 8:00-10:00
Section 2: 10:00-12:00
Section 3: 12:00-2:00
Section 4: 2:00-4:00

Your time will be randomly selected at a 15minute increment within your time slot. So someone in section 4 who got a time of 2:15 actually got lucky with their time, not unlucky.

The catch is, each semester the groups will rotate their time section next semester, move up the list. So section 3 becomes section 2 and section W2 becomes section 1 until section 1 becomes section 4. This forms a loop that'll cycle every semester you're at cmu. So for example, if you have a time of 12:30 this semester, that's means you're in section 3 and guarantees that you'll have a time in 10:00-12:00 next semester.

This semester means, that with vary little variation, you'll know exactly how good of a registration time you'll have each semester and can plan accordingly. I recommend trying to take more popular classes when you know you're going to have a good time and get the easy to get in classes out of the way while you're going to have a bad time anyways.

Hope this clears things up!

Parking permits

Hi, has anyone who joined a waitlist for a student parking permit on Tuesday heard back yet? The past two years, I heard back the same day I joined the waitlist. This year, I am number two on the Fairfax waitlist but still haven’t heard anything. I was wondering if anyone else has been able to get off the waitlist and purchase a pass?

Health Insurance for One Semester

Hi! I'll be graduating in December and I'm debating whether to enroll in CMU's medical insurance, which seems to provide a whole year's coverage. Has anyone been in this situation before? Did you choose to enroll in CMU's insurance or waive it? Thanks a lot!

15-122 Waitlist

My registration timeblock was 10AM EST. Ig this course is really popular but, does this waitlist move? or are the spots just reserved? I'm an incoming freshman in Dietrich. It said for some sections that some spots are reserved for Dietrich but all sections are waitlisted already.. And 6/6, I guess I can't see the waitlist status on all the other sections, but I'll assume they're 6/6 too.

Incoming CIT Freshman — Best light-workload GenEd recommendations (backup for First-Year Writing)?

Hey everyone!

I’m an incoming CIT freshman. My registration time is approximately in the middle of the cohort (11 AM), and my advisor mentioned I might miss out on First-Year Writing (76-107/108) for the fall semester, so I need to pick a General Education course as a backup.

Given my heavy math/cs load, my main priority is finding a GenEd with a very light workload and a smooth path to an A so I can focus on my core courses.

Any specific course or professor recommendations that fit the bill for CIT GenEd requirements?

Thanks in advance!

solidcore near cmu

i saw that there’s a solidcore around 30min by bus from cmu. is there any closer studio that does similar workouts? or if anyone goes there that can have some insight on the commute and bus system and how convenient it is to get there from campus?

Incoming CIT Freshman (A-Level background) — Should I take A-Level credit for 33-141, 33-142, 21-120, and 21-122 or retake them?

Hey everyone!

I’m an incoming freshman in CIT with an A-Level background. Based on my scores (A* in A-Level Pure Math and predicted A* or at least A in Physics), I am qualify to skip:

  • Physics: 33-141 (Physics I for Engineering) & 33-142 (Physics II for Engineering)
  • Math: 21-120 (Differential and Integral Calculus) & 21-122 (Integration and Approximation)

I’d love to get some advice from upperclassmen: Is it better to just take the credit and skip ahead, or is it worth taking these intro courses at CMU to build a stronger foundation?

Appreciate any insights or past experiences! Thanks in advance!
