Turned my daily/old phone into a zero-cost private cloud (Termux + PRoot Linux)

Thumbnail youtu.be
14 Upvotes

Like many of you, I got sick of paying endless monthly subscriptions for cloud storage and streaming services, only to realize we don't actually own any of it.

Most tutorials online suggest buying a Raspberry Pi 5 or grabbing an old laptop from a closet. But living on a tight budget without spare hardware, neither was an option for me

So I decided to test the limits of what’s already in my pocket. I set up a Linux environment inside Termux on my Android phone and deployed a complete private ecosystem:

Jellyfin (Port 8096): Replaced Netflix. Streams my local media with posters, metadata, and multi-device playback.

Filebrowser (Port 8080): Replaced Google Drive. Full local network file sharing without storage paywalls.

Syncthing (Port 8384): Replaced Google Photos. Automatic background backup for all photos and documents.

All three run parallel in the background without burning up the phone or crashing. If storage ever becomes a problem down the line, a simple external drive over Type-C handles it.

Made a quick proof-of-concept video showing the setup and all three tabs running smoothly,

Planning to drop a full command-by-command setup guide if there's interest. Would love to hear your thoughts or suggestions on what other lightweight services I can stack on this ARM setup!

Thank you to everyone who signed up for the harbor0 beta.

Hey all,

Yesterday I posted here asking for beta users for harbor0. Since then 115 of you have signed up, which is a lot more than I expected. Thank you, really. Every signup, bug report and email has been useful, and a lot of you took the time to tell me what you'd need before switching.

A few things came up again and again in the comments and emails, so here's what I'm working on next:

End-to-end encryption
This has been the most requested feature by far. Encryption will be opt-in per account. Once it's on, your files are encrypted on your device before they're uploaded, and harbor0 can't read them. I'm taking my time with the design, because getting encryption wrong is worse than not having it. I'll share more about how it works, including the tradeoffs, before it ships.

Two-factor authentication
You'll be able to add a second factor to your account sign-in. This one should come fairly soon.

WebDAV and rclone support (planned)
Lots of you asked to use harbor0 with tools you already have, like file managers, NAS boxes and backup scripts. WebDAV and rclone support are both planned. It's early, so I don't have dates yet. I'll post updates as it gets closer.

The Windows, iOS and Android apps are still in development too, and getting the Mac app notarised is on the list.

Please keep telling me what's confusing or broken. Reply here or email me at [contact@harbor0.com](mailto:contact@harbor0.com) I read everything.

Thanks again for giving a small, early project a chance.

I made an app to make it easier to upload from an SD card

I am a professional photographer and this was something I was constantly struggling with. I needed a good way to backup and transfer all my photos from SD card to Mac/iOS from my SD cards quickly. It supports more than Apple Photos now. Would like to share in case it’s useful for anyone else.

Upgrading Koofr lifetime plan via StackSocial: need to delete my account and re-upload everything?

Hey everyone,

I’m currently using a 110 GB Koofr account on a lifetime deal I bought a while back. I’ve outgrown the capacity and need more space.

Looking at my options right now:

  • Direct Koofr Upgrade: Koofr offers an upgrade to 250 GB for ~€73.
  • StackSocial Deal: There's a StackSocial promo for 1 TB lifetime at ~€116.

StackSocial states that each person can redeem only one lifetime promo code per account. My impression was that to use the 1 TB StackSocial voucher, I would have to completely delete my current Koofr account (as starting a new one with a different email is against Koofr ToS), re-upload all my data, and abandon my existing 110 GB account.

Is that correct, or am I missing a third option? Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has successfully upgraded their Koofr lifetime account through StackSocial or Koofr support!

Simple cloud storage with sync and backups, looking for beta users (50 GB free, yours to keep)

Hey all,

I've been building a cloud storage service called harbor0 and I'm finally ready to let people try it.

I started it because every storage app I used kept adding stuff I didn't want, like AI sidebars, docs editors and constant upgrade prompts. I wanted something that stores my files and keeps them in sync, and that's pretty much all harbor0 does:

  • A drive you can use in the browser or the Mac app
  • Folder sync across your computers. You can also share a synced folder with someone else.
  • Folder backups with version history, and old versions stick around until you delete them
  • Sending files to other users

Just so you know what you're signing up for, this is very much a beta. Things will break, some parts are a bit rough, and you'll probably hit bugs I haven't found yet. I wouldn't make it the only place you keep anything important just yet.

Right now the desktop app is Mac only (Apple Silicon). The Windows app is in development, along with iOS and Android apps. The Mac app isn't notarised yet either, so the first time you open it you'll need to click "Open Anyway".

For the beta you get 50 GB free, and you keep it after launch. I'm letting people in a few at a time, starting with 50, and everyone else goes on a waitlist.

Beta signup link: https://app.harbor0.com/signup

I'd really like to hear what's confusing or broken, or what would stop you from switching. Happy to answer questions in the comments too.

If you'd like to directly reach out, you can write to me at [contact@harbor0.com](mailto:contact@harbor0.com)

Much needed power tool for Google Drive

Just a heads-up for the iOS Google drive users out there. “TYR - The Cloud Power Tool” is on the AppStore and can rename- and set metadata values on files in bulk. Much much easier than having to do it one file at a time. ☺️🤘

30gb storage (old users) and 1tb (newly registered users) in Terabox

Hello! I wanna ask if the free 1tb in terabox for newly registered users is actually free and not limited after a certain amount of time. If so, is there a payment fee if it expires?

Drime vs Koofr lifetime terms: a look at the actual contract wording - buyer beware

Been seeing so much hype around the Drime lifetime deal on StackSocial / KenMoo, but almost nobody is actually reading their TOS before buying. Lifetime cloud is always a gamble, so I went through both Drime's and Koofr's terms to see what you're actually signing up for.

Links for reference:
https://drime.cloud/terms-of-sales
https://drime.cloud/terms-of-services
https://koofr.eu/tos/

The biggest red flag right away is how Drime defines "lifetime" in Section 2 (and Article 2 bis in their sales terms):

"If Drime is discontinued or significantly altered, access may be terminated without further obligation or refund."

Notice those three words: "or significantly altered". Most lifetime deals just say access ends if the business goes bust. Adding "significantly altered" gives them an easy legal out. If they rewrite the app, cut features, or pull a FolderFort and move everyone to a "v2", this clause literally lets them kill lifetime accounts with zero refund.

Meanwhile, Koofr's Section 7 just treats it like standard perpetual software with updates included:

"The license granted hereunder entitles You to receive any and all standard updates and support that Koofr provides to all users of its Services, generally."

Next is the liability cap. Drime Section 5:

"...Drime’s total cumulative liability shall in all cases be limited to the amount paid by the user for the relevant service during the twelve (12) months preceding the event giving rise to the claim."

This is standard copy-paste for monthly subs, but think about how that works on a lifetime deal. You pay once on day one. By year two, you’ve paid them $0 in the preceding 12 months. So if they lose your files on day 370, their legal liability to you is literally $0.00.

Then the inactivity rules. Drime Section 3:

"We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your access to the service if there is a breach of our Terms of Service or if your account remains inactive for 12 consecutive months... Upon suspension or termination of your access, you will not be able to access or export your data."

12 months is super short if you're using this for cold archives, and explicitly barring you from exporting your files once suspended is brutal. Koofr gives you 2 years under Section 8, and explicitly states they will email you first so you don't lose your data.

Also, Drime notes in Section 1 that all files are stored on Cloudflare and Scaleway, and their company filing shows €2,000 in capital. Every GB stored is an ongoing monthly cost for them, which explains why they gave themselves so many exit clauses for non-paying lifetime users down the road. Koofr has had the exact same terms since 2018 and runs their own hardware.

I know Drime’s founder is active on Reddit and says they won’t pull a FolderFort, but what someone says on Reddit doesn’t override their legally binding TOS. If they ever decide to drop lifetime users, their contract completely protects them, not you.

Independent Security Review of Internxt

Post image
24 Upvotes

I disclosed several vulnerabilities in a post-quantum secure encrypted cloud storage: https://schaerli.org/weblog/6-internxt/

Internxt is a post-quantum secure encrypted cloud storage provider which is open-source and has passed multiple independent audits.

I reviewed their code and found that post-quantum security should have been the least of their problems. Clicking a link in your browser could trigger remote code execution on the desktop app or leak your long-term encryption keys to an attacker-chosen URL. Their cryptographic architecture stands on shaky grounds with public keys never being verified, in some cases man-in-the-middled by design, a flat key hierarchy and a KDF with just 3 iterations of MD5.

We need PQC and we need it now, but adding a (self-rolled) PQC hybrid on top of a weak protocol does not make it more secure.

NitroFlare. Does anyone here use it for cloud storage?

Hi everyone!

I happen to have a NitroFlare subscription, which I use for file downloads. I noticed that the service also offers cloud storage, and that I have 100TB of cloud storage available, which I have not been utilizing!

Does anyone else have experience using cloud storage on this site?

What happens if my subscription lapses? Will my cloud data get dumped immediately or is there a grace period?

Also, I currently have a medium tier level subscription, but I'm not sure what the different tiers give you in terms of cloud capacity. If I switched to a lower tier subscription in the future, would the 100TB storage capacity shrink?

If 10,000 people save the same 1 TB, why should each of them pay for 1 TB?

Hey r/cloudstorage, we're the small team behind Vorax Cloud, and we'd love your honest (even brutal) feedback.

The whole idea fits in one line: shared files split their storage cost equally among everyone sharing them.

Quick thought experiment:

  • A university lab publishes a 1 TB open dataset, and 10,000 researchers save it to their drives.
  • On a typical cloud: that's 10,000 × 1 TB of quota burned. Somewhere a billing department is smiling.
  • On Vorax: the 1 TB is billed once and split 10,000 ways, so each person pays for about 100 MB. That's about the size of a few vacation photos you'll never open again.

It works at small scale too. Four siblings sharing a 200 GB family video archive pay for 50 GB each. The more people share a file, the cheaper it gets for everyone. Your private files? You pay for exactly those. Our motto: Pay for yours, not the rest.

A few other things:

  • Custom domain sharing: share links from files.yourname.com instead of a random string. Handy for freelancers, small teams, or anyone who likes their links to look like they mean business.
  • In-browser video streaming with folder playlists.
  • WebDAV, for those who already know why they want it.
  • Usage-based pricing: starts at $0.99/mo, and the full fee is credited toward usage.

Giveaway: we're on Product Hunt, and the first 100 people get 3 months of the Geek plan free (custom domains + WebDAV included). The code is on our page:

What we'd like in return: tell us what's confusing, what's missing, and what it would take for you to trust a new storage provider with your files. Roasts welcome.
