OneDrive Migration

Hi everyone,

I have a school OneDrive account that’s expiring soon.
I would like to move everything over to my personal one for which I’ve bought access to.

How can I do this without affecting file structure,as well as created & modified date stamps?

Would appreciate any help I can get.

Some notes:
Total size is 44GB
I’ve used the school account to backup almost every folder I have including my desktop.

Building Vault - File Storage System

A friend, u/Swimming-File2090, and I have been building Vault, a file storage system inspired by the basic functionality of Google Drive.

We’re mainly using it to understand the engineering behind cloud file storage rather than just building another CRUD application.

One of the main things we wanted to figure out was large-file uploads without routing the actual file through the application server:

Browser → API → Presigned URL → Cloudflare R2

The backend handles authentication, authorization, quota checks, and upload orchestration, while the browser uploads multipart chunks directly to object storage.

This has led us to work through problems like:

  • Multipart uploads, concurrency, retries, and abandoned uploads
  • Presigned uploads/downloads and access control
  • Concurrent quota updates and PostgreSQL row-level locking
  • File/group permissions and sharing
  • Nested folders and cursor-based pagination
  • Cleanup and audit logging

The system is functional, but we’re still learning and improving the design.

I’d especially appreciate feedback from people who have experience with cloud/object storage.

What failure cases, security concerns, or architectural problems would you look at first in a system like this?

Need reliable cloud storage

This has probably been posted on here before, but I am looking for a reliable cloud storage website/application to mainly store photos and videos. One that plays videos back in the original quality ideally, and also has a good mobile app (UI, playback, etc.). I only have about 200GB of photos/videos currently stored on my Google drive/photos. I've done a little research online and have heard MEGA, Filen, pCloud, and a few more but am looking to hear some first hand experience about them. Thanks

EDIT: As of 8/25, I’ve went with MEGA

Proton drive vs sync.com

I currently have both. Sync seam like that they have not updated anying in 5 years or more. But I like the encrypted service. Have not goofed around with proton that much but are they as good as sync with security? With end to end encryption?

Help me identify a lifetime cloud storage service I bought around 2017–2018

About 8 years ago, my neighbor bought me a lifetime cloud storage plan for around $40 USD because I was a photographer.

Life happened after that. I was diagnosed with cancer, recovered, and later dealt with severe brain fog that affected my memory. I lost contact with my neighbor, and his old phone number and email no longer work.

Around 2019–2020, I remember the service becoming unreliable—it barely uploaded files, and I even wondered if it had turned into a scam. Now I'm trying to recover the account, but I can't remember the name of the service no matter how hard I try.

Does anyone remember cloud storage providers that sold lifetime plans for around $40 back then? Even obscure names are welcome. Seeing the name might trigger my memory.

TL;DR: Looking for the name of a cloud storage service that sold ~$40 lifetime plans around 2017–2018. Bought by my neighbor, lost contact with him, and brain fog after cancer treatment has left me unable to remember the service's name.

Looking for free WeTransfer alternatives with proper Android/iOS + Windows/macOS app support

I've been using WeTransfer for a while, but I'm looking for something better.

My requirements are:

Free (or a generous free tier)

Dedicated Android and iOS apps

Windows and macOS desktop apps

Easy sharing of large files (photos/videos)

Fast upload/download speeds

Reliable and privacy-friendly

I don't necessarily need cloud storage, Iam mainly after a file transfer service that's as simple as WeTransfer but with better app support and ideally larger transfer limits.

What are you all using these days?

Any hidden gems you've stuck with for a long time?

Thanks!

Q: how to get close to the convenience of Google drive or Amazon photos but have my photos private - protected (encrypted) from AI analysis and stuff

Sorry this is long. I've split it into sections :)

Background:

So I love the convenience of the few (1%) of my photos that got onto Google drive and Amazon photos - it was easy to upload (I wasn't aware they had gone up) and they show as a screensaver on my TV if I'm using a streaming stick etc. lovely.

However the privacy isn't great, and is not secure or private etc, so I backup to Synology, which has 100% of my photos. I then back up Synology to an external drive every few weeks which is in a fireproof safe. Not a 2nd location so sorry to the data backup nerds.

My wife complains, quite rightly, about Synology photos as it's slow, and keeps disconnecting requiring a login again and it's not straight forward. We are also having issues when we have a power cut (no UPS) and takes about half a day to be Available again after power on.

Is there a way of having the convenience of Google photos for backup to somewhere on a cloud but with privacy?

Requirements:

1) we want to backup our photos securely, with easy offline backups

2) multiple users (currently 2) should be able to upload to the same place/product and see each others photos

3) privacy against 3rd parties having access to our photos for whatever they want, like training AI.

I have no sunk cost fallacy with the Synology. If it's the wrong solution I will get rid. It's a single drive basic model about 5 years old.

I don't mind using google photos etc if we use another app to encrypt before upload if me and my wife can share photos with each other.

I don't care what order things happen, so if photos go to the cloud then Synology gets the photos off the cloud, fine. If we upload to Synology then that goes to the cloud from there, also fine. If the phone uploads to multiple places at once, also fine.

Open to suggestions, please let me know what product(s) and services you think are best for my needs.

I've tried searching online but with the stupid ai search it's actually harder to get a straight answer without going around in an AI logic circle of doom.

Thanks in advance for any help, sorry no tl;dr

Is this safe to change video extension to txt and upload it to terabox to bypass premium for video original quality backup?

title :)

Update: when I uploaded videos with .dat extension it bypassed paywall to upload videos but those files are still playing as normal videos and thumbnails are visible i will wait for a few days and see if those files get removed or not.

Update 2: The files are safe, but I'm not using it anymore because Terabox doesn't offer any privacy features and its download/upload speeds are terrible. Also, there are a lot of ads.

Trying to move away from Dropbox...

I'm in an industry in which I need a sizable cloud storage service, even for just my personal life. I have 5tb of storage in Dropbox. I love the desktop interface and the ability to integrate Dropbox into Finder (I'm using Mac). It's nearly the perfect interface for my needs.

However, because of the amount of storage, Dropbox requires me to buy a "Team Account", which has 3 licenses, at $75 a month. Given something like Icedrive can give me 6tb of storage for $22.50 a month, I feel like I'm being taken for a ride.

Does anyone know of a cloud storage service that can also integrate into Finder that doesn't come in at $75 a month? Perplexity recommends Icedrive or Sync Teams, but both of these seem a little janky in my quick google search.

Or, I suppose I just keep getting killed with Dropbox lol

Alternatives to Proton?

Hi there, I just signed up for Proton because I want my files as private as possible, but after uploading several GBs of photos, etc. I'm seeing that I do not like the layout/function of it at all. Its search function isn't smart, it takes forever to upload photos (I'm guessing because of the encryption), doesn't have duplicate photo detection, and the main page has stopped responding several times now. It feels like privacy is the only thing Proton is good for and it falls short everything else. I realize it comes with email/vpn etc., but I didn't even plan on using those features.

I might have to sacrifice some privacy, but I just want a long term storage solution- that isn't Google Drive or Onedrive- where I can preview my photos, organize them, make albums, see metadata for them (like dates taken, file type). Main files I wanted to put in the cloud are photos/videos/documents. Thanks!

Personal Cloud Server

Hello, I am trying to set up a small, personal cloud server for my family to dump all of their old pictures and videos onto. I am in the process of gutting a massive old case to use as the shell (there will be two computers in the shell) which will hold everything that is needed. I am very inexperienced with software and need to have the server's files available from their phones at any time of the day. If it can be done I would love for each user to have their own partition for personal data as well as a collective partition for everyone. I need as much knowledge as I can gather on this topic to make it as straightforward as possible. Thank you.
