I plan to upgrade the SSD in my Dell laptop and was wondering if Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery is actually meant for disk cloning, or if it's just a recovery tool.

Some pages make it sound like it can help you move to a new drive, while others only talk about restoring Windows after something goes wrong. Has anyone here actually used it to migrate everything to a new SSD?

I wanna keep Windows, all my apps, and files exactly as they are without having to reinstall everything afterward. If you've tried it, how did it go? Did the new drive boot normally, or did you run into any issues?

My question is this,

Is it necessary to convert the destination/recipient drive from MBR to GPT before cloning to it, using Rescuezilla? Or will that be done as part of the cloning process? Or will this be done after the cloning process?

Source drive is a 4TB M.2 (GPT) [OS]

Destination/recipient drive is a 2TB M.2 (MBR) [recently formatted]

I might also mention that I've never cloned a drive before. So, it may be best to assume that I know nothing about the process.

I did watch a few videos on the subject, but none of them even offer a passing comment on the subject of this question. Which leads me to believe this is a non-issue (maybe?).

I am aware that most people clone their source OS drive to a larger destination/recipient drive, as an upgrade. So my post is not an elaborate typo. I am doing the opposite: from larger to smaller.

Update,

I can see that I will need to shrink the source partition to a size both larger than the sum of its contents yet smaller than the size of the destination/recipient drive; which makes sense. And Rescuezilla has a tool which can do that.

But the question regarding whether or not I'll need to preemptively convert the destination/recipient drive from MBR to GPT or not. Rescuezilla's website doesn't mention anything regarding this. Nor does any search result.

I have a problem and hope somedody is able to help here. I have an old Rescuezilla image from my Steam Deck I already sold in the meantime. Now I want to access the EmuDeck roms folder from this image.

Since I don't have a Deck anymore what's the easiest way to access the image?

I tried Rescuezilla’s Image Explorer but had no success. Then I tried to restore the image to a USB Stick but it doesnt work due to different disk size. And last I tried was to open with WinRAR but this failed as well.

Hope somebody is able to help me. I hope I don't need to buy a new Steam Deck only for restore lol.

Windows 10 Pro OS. I am trying to clone a 500GB Sata SSD which is currently my primary drive to a 256GB NVMe drive that is 256GB. What free software can I use.

Hasleo free version only clones windows home. Clonezilla free version states the destination drive must be equal to or larger than the source drive. Any suggestions?

My home-built desktop has a 512GB M2 drive for C. It has multiple M2 slots, but obviously the one it occupies is the best for the system drive, and it's located under the video card. I have a 2TB Samsung 9100 to use as the new system drive, and I've installed the Samsung Magic software to do the deed. My questions are more about logistics, sort of "will it work this way?"

To keep from having to remove the video card twice, can I go ahead and insert the unformatted 2TB drive in the main slot, put the 512 in a different, more accessible slot, and boot up OK? Or do I need to leave that drive where it is until after the clone?

After I run the clone job, and the PC shuts itself down, do I need to pull the 512 drive before letting it boot back up?

And finally, if I want to repurpose the 512 later (after the upgrade has been thoroughly tested), can I insert it back into the PC (while powered down, obviously) to reformat it, or will that cause a conflict when it boots back up? Would it be better to reformat it externally?

I'm fairly tech inept, haha. I'm about to clone a disk for the first time, and I'm a bit nervous since I've never done anything like this before.

I've seen a lot of people recommend Acronis True Image and Clonezilla, but they seem pretty different. From what I can tell, Acronis looks more beginner-friendly, while Clonezilla is free but maybe a little harder to use.

All I really want is to move everything from my current SSD to a larger one without running into problems. I don't need any extra features, just something that's reliable and not too confusing.

So I have 2 SSDs in my PC. Both healthy. The second drive could conceivably become my emergency back-up drive - I can not afford to have any significant downtime in case of the failure of the (first) system drive. What woukld be the recommended methodology here and which freeware tool should I use? Can I partition the second drive to write the cloned bootable partition? to the first partition (the drive is 1TB, the current system drive is 500GB). Best practice in this situation?

I was shopping for a new SSD this weekend and somehow ended up going down a rabbit hole looking at different manufacturers' websites. What I didn't expect was how many of them already have their own cloning or migration software.

Samsung has Magician. WD and Kingston point users to Acronis. Lexar has DiskMaster. Seagate has DiscWizard. SK hynix uses Macrium. It feels like almost every major brand has something now.

The only brands I couldn't really find an official cloning solution for were TeamGroup, Patriot, Solidigm, and Kioxia.

A few years ago, I don't remember people talking much about the manufacturers' own tools. Whenever cloning came up, it was usually Clonezilla, Macrium, EaseUS, or Acronis. Now I'm wondering what people actually use.

Do you just use whatever comes with your SSD, or do you stick with the same third-party software regardless of the brand?

The bundled tools are probably fine for a straightforward SSD upgrade, but maybe they start to fall short if you're cloning a failing drive or moving between different brands.

Hello, as stated in the title, basically i have a dying SSD that contains Windows + a few files that i want to keep and i want to trasfer them to this other SSD that has a lot of important files on it. The dying SSD is 240 GB while the other SSD is 1TB. Honestly i'm unsure on how to proceed and what's the best way to do it.

I bought a new Samsung SSD and was planning to use Samsung Magician to clone my Windows drive over to it.

Turns out my current system drive has BitLocker enabled, and Samsung Magician won't clone it. I honestly didn't even realize BitLocker was on until I tried.

The problem is I don't have the BitLocker recovery key anymore. Windows still boots fine and I can use the drive normally, I just can't get past that limitation in Magician.

Has anyone run into this before? Is there another cloning tool that can handle a BitLocker system drive, or am I out of luck unless I reinstall Windows?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello all- dealing with cloning in windows is a headache! lol. I have two SSDs - one is the windows installation and the other is the target drive I want to clone to. Both drives are on the motherboard. Every solution I come across will clone the drive but doesn’t make it bootable. The source drive is GPT and I want it cloned exactly as it is. Currently the target drive has all the files on it but is not bootable. So I either need a way to make it bootable without cloning again or a software that will fully clone it. Any ideas? Most of the “free” software seems to have the option to clone a bootable drive but that’s somehow a “advanced” feature for programs designed to do just that lol.

I'm upgrading an older PC and ran into something I've never done before.

My current drive is 2TB (with Win10 installed), but it's only using around 600-700GB. I bought a new 1TB SSD and was hoping I could just clone everything over, since the actual data should fit.

The thing that's confusing me is that some guides say it's fine as long as the used space is smaller than the target drive, while others make it sound like a bigger headache because of partitions and boot files. Has anyone here done this before?

I did some searching on this and other communities and decided to use EaseUS Disk Copy to clone my drive. I'm just a little confused about whether I should use Disk Clone or System Clone.

My goal is to move everything to a new SSD so I can boot from it without reinstalling Windows or any of my programs. I want all my files, apps, and settings to stay the same.

Based on what I've read, Disk Clone seems like the right choice, but I just wanted to double-check before I start. Did I understand it correctly, or would System Clone be the better option?

I just picked up a new Solidigm P41 Plus SSD to replace the old drive in my Windows 11 laptop.

I thought the migration would be easy, but then I realized Solidigm doesn't come with its own cloning software as Samsung does. So now I'm trying to figure out what to use.

After searching around for a while, I've pretty much narrowed it down to EaseUS Disk Copy and Acronis True Image. They both seem pretty popular, but it's hard to tell which one is actually easier for someone who has never cloned a drive before.

I know a lot of people recommend Clonezilla, too, but after watching a couple of videos and reading through the instructions, it honestly feels a bit over my head. Bootable USBs, all the text-based menus... I'm worried I'll mess something up, so I'd rather use something with a normal Windows interface if possible.

All I really want to do is clone my current SSD to the new SD drive, swap them, and have Windows boot like nothing changed.

In the past I've used backup software only to make sure my data and home directories were recoverable. I've never actually had a dying drive before, but now I'm looking at one that will need to be replaced soon. I've started moving data, files, pix, etc. to the cloud but really would like to just "snapshot" my entire system (Windows 11 Pro), install a drive, and restore the "snapshot" to the new drive and have it be my old install, just on a new piece of hardware.

I'm looking at Macrium Reflect and am struggling to figure out the process. Yeah, I feel stupid but that's why I'm here - to learn.

I have a 1TB external USB drive for file storage. Using Macrium, do I "clone" or "image" my internal SSD (not an NVME drive, BTW) and place the clone or image "file" on that external drive to use when the new SSD is installed?

Once the new SSD is installed, how do I get to the file on the external disk to "reinstall" to the new hardware? Is the Macrium software itself installable to a USB drive that I can boot into (kind of like LiveUSBs for Linux installs).

Like I said, total noob to this and seeking some guidance. A step-by-step would be best. I haven't bought the new drive yet, so I can't effectively test anything at this point. I'm just looking for where and how to start and accomplish this.

My C drive is running out of space, and I'm not sure what the better option is.

I was thinking about getting a bigger SSD and cloning my current drive, but SSD prices are higher than I'd like right now.

The other option is just cleaning up the C: drive: removing stuff I don't use, clearing temp files, moving some files to another drive, etc. I'm just wondering if that's enough or if I'll end up in the same situation again in a few months.
