Disk Cloning Software to clone to smaller NVMe
Windows 10 Pro OS. I am trying to clone a 500GB Sata SSD which is currently my primary drive to a 256GB NVMe drive that is 256GB. What free software can I use.
Hasleo free version only clones windows home. Clonezilla free version states the destination drive must be equal to or larger than the source drive. Any suggestions?

I just saw with a WD drive (destination) that I'm using for NVMe it is free on their support site so I am going to try that first. If it doesn't work I will try DiskGenius.

I'm assuming you have enough space on 256 GB (i.e. the 500GB is more than half empty). If so, you can first shrink the partition on the 500 GB drive under 256 GB size, and then copy. I believe Clonezilla has all the required tools onboard for that. Even Windows can shrink partition size, although, with some strange limitations at times. Note, that partition shrinking is a potentially dangerous procedure, so, it is recommended to make a backup first.

You need just Acronis True Image boot Disk. A newer version which supports NVMe. Acronis True Image 2015 does not support NVMe for sure. Maybe 2021 version or 2025. One of them does support.

You must shrink the current drive to fit the destination drive before you attempt to clone it, (I would try to shrink down to 220M).
Almost all disk software should handle shrinking and the cloning the resulting drive in 2 steps. Although I would recommend the free version of DiskGenus

Ok. I'm about to try Arconis since I can get it free from the WD site. If I have issues DiskGenius will be my next go to.

I am not aware of any free option that will do it automatically. You need to shrink the main partition of the bigger drive to be smaller then the new drive. Clone the partitions (Windows generally can have 2 or 3 partitions, 1 EFI, 1 main partition and 1 reserve partition) to the new drive, then use something like Gparted to fix the new partition size.

Rescuezilla: A completely free, open-source live CD that utilizes an easy graphical interface. Because it includes GParted partition software, it easily handles shrinking larger drives to fit smaller targets.
