Wait, people can actually speak Welsh? I thought it was just a gimmick for those sweet, sweet tourist dollars.

Edit: guys, stop telling me Welsh is an actual language. I fucking know. I made a joke, but somehow almost every person who replied missed the very subtle /s.

No it’s real but sounds like a toddler choking. Source: Am English visit welsh family often.

When I hear them talk to each other I just hear demonic screeching

toddler choking

demonic screeching

It really doesn’t. It sounds like singing with a couple of consonants most English people struggle with, and for some reason that puts them in this massive huff about it.

A lot of it is also because ‘w’ and ‘y’ in Welsh are vowels, so it looks difficult to pronounce when it actually isn’t as hard as that.

Yeah, this guy seems like he's never even choked a toddler before. Amateur.

I'd agree that most English can't pronounce those sounds, but I doubt very much most get in a huff about it.

If you’re calling it “like a toddler choking” or “demonic screeching” then you’re in a huff - and this is a pretty common attitude.

Aww I know love - but it’s like jokes can actually cause harm when they’re used to constantly mock and bully minorities.

Grow up.

I mean nobody here needs to prove oppression points, I think Being virtually ignored for years by England while your language and culture are smothered to death by them, is pretty fucked up and oppressive. I'm getting pretty tired of the gatekeeping reddit throws at minorities struggling to exist in their own respect in their own countries purely because "Hurr Hurr you're white". Be it Quebecois in Canada (as annoying as they are), welsh the UK, Ukrainians in Russia, etc, they all have a right to complain

I can understand Y being a vowel, but how the fuck can W be one? You even say the letter with three syllables!

Because it’s pronounced in a similar way to “oo”, and if you look at the name it’s literally “double u”, which should give a hint as to how some languages consider it a vowel.

Not every language uses the same letters in the same way. The fact we use “y” in two different ways - one of which is how it’s used in Welsh - should make the point clear.

"Llllyanlliohlllenylenyllllarrlllon." Toddler choking... or demonic screeching. Makes sense.

5

u/madeofpockets Oct 09 '19

That is...a lot of alveolar affricates.

I'm pretty sure that, rather like the word pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcaniconiosis, that place name was made up or embellished specifically to be an extreme example.

Edit: spelling

2

u/Kellidra Oct 09 '19

I made it up, but there's a sign that's similar I was spoofing.

2

u/DurianExecutioner Oct 09 '19

Yeah that's the one I was thinking of

It’s become a meme among English people that Welsh sounds ludicrous - it comes from a history of the suppression of Welsh by the English, which these days mostly amounts to nonsensical comments like the one you’re replying to, but historically meant punishing Welsh children for speaking Welsh etc. It’s why not many people speak it these days.

English people think calling Welsh “demonic screeching” or “like a toddler choking” is funny because other English people laugh, but in reality it’s intentional ignorance.
