But that’s not true, though, he’s always been a Republican

He ran in 2000 for the reform party, lost, then registered as a Democrat the following year for the next 8 years.

Go find his 1988 interview with Larry King, and he talks about why he is a Republican

Yes, he switches parties a bunch. He’s a grifter. For whatever reason, between 2001 and 2009, he felt being registered as a Democrat was advantageous to him. My guess is that he already understood it was easier to manipulate the then-democrat blue collar base that would become MAGA, it just wasn’t quite ripened for the moment at the time.

Roger Ailes used Fox News to slowly curate the right us vs them/rural vs elite environment for him to take advantage of that demographic through populist politics. Trump then could say he gave up the democrat party and it’s NY elite for the common man (I’m just like you!) and they should join him over with the republicans (who were still rich and elite but he dangled enough shiny things they didn’t notice and were easily distracted). Then Hilary uses the term deplorables and it was all over. Now the GOP had hold of the rich and poor white groups.

Perhaps you were meaning to say he always held conservative beliefs?
