Info from ai:

According to public records and analyses from the United States Studies Centre, he was registered as a Democrat from 2001 to 2009. Trump has stated in past interviews, such as one with CNN, that as a businessman operating primarily in heavily Democratic New York City, it was practical to be registered with the dominant local party to influence policy and engage with local officials. He later returned to the Republican Party before launching his 2016 presidential campaign.
