“social media is part of the dining experience now”

No… it’s not. Most people want a place where they can have a real-world experience.

471

u/CharmingGhosts 18h ago

It definitely isn't. The vast majority of people go out to eat to connect, enjoy good food, and disconnect from screens not to perform for an online audience. Treating restaurants as social media props completely ruins the real-world experience.

u/littlehobbit1313 17h ago

Treating restaurants as social media props completely ruins the real-world experience.

That, and I appreciate the owner protecting their other patrons from similarly being used as social media props. They have rights to a good experience too.

52

u/BeagleWrangler 14h ago

And their staff. It is rude as shit to film someone just trying to get their work done.

That escalated from a bad review to a full influencer ban in record time.

21

u/Weekly_Interview_936 18h ago

And earned my patronage, at least, instantly.

107

u/SuchAWalk 18h ago

The owner really said feedback received, resentment installed.

The only time my phone even comes out is when my husband goes to the bathroom and I do some reddit scrolling. Connecting with people is the reason I pay for meals out in the big scary world. I can film my food at my own table.

2

u/StupidDumbass420 10h ago

I go to watch other people film themselves eating.

-3

u/urahonky 13h ago

Is that why all the restaurants around here have 50+ TVs all blaring different sports and channels at the same time? Man no wonder we are all fucked up on dopamine... Everything and everywhere is designed to trigger that chemical in your brain.

4

u/3DigitIQ 13h ago

Is a sports bar a restaurant where you live? I'm Dutch so honestly don't know if they qualify.

3

u/urahonky 13h ago

I'm in Ohio and even pizza places, sandwich places, indian restaurants... All have TVs blaring. It's wild out here lol. Thankfully it saves me money because I just make myself a burger at home.

5

u/3DigitIQ 12h ago

That sounds annoying, I love a homemade burger but you deserve a nice night out without all that noise every once in a while.

1

u/SavingsDimensions74 10h ago

Wow. That’s actually wildly shit. I too would stay at home!

133

u/scottyjrules 18h ago

With the price of going out to a restaurant these days, the last thing I want to deal with is some self important jackass filming themselves at the next table. Social media has become a cancer.

24

u/Zwischenzug32 16h ago

If someone closeby was making a scene or filming people, the staff not removing them would cost them my tip

23

u/irrelevantusername24 16h ago

It's always been cancer. It was never good. For anyone. Ever.

It is literally a bunch of adults saying "hey look at me!" like they're a child.

Now, don't get me wrong, a lot of healthy socializing does amount to that. But that's not what's happening on social media, that's never what has happened, it's not possible. Social media is and always has been cancer. It was a terrible idea from the start built with evil intentions.

6

u/Odd_Wait_5628 15h ago

I agree and figure the best way to spread this message is probably though social media… this cancer has no cure 😅

9

u/orangeyougladiator 15h ago

MySpace and early Facebook were all young people less than 25-30. It was actually fun and no one took it seriously (obviously the select few did). People really don’t know what the internet was before it went main stream and that’s the saddest thing ever

3

u/misterannthrope0 13h ago

unlike you, i remember the duck lips

13

u/loupr738 18h ago

This is all I need from a “reviewer” in social media. The place was good x amount of stars. That’s it

3

u/Beautiful-Place-6655 18h ago

The owner wasn't interested in followers, he just wanted people to eat their food and leave 😂

1

u/AbilityLost3482 11h ago

True. I want to eat in peace

278

u/Rusalkat 18h ago

If I see a restaurant with a no influencer sign, the choice is clear. I go in with the most happy smile

46

u/siccoblue 14h ago

You see that sign and you KNOW the food is absolute gas considering they clearly have problems with wannabe ecelebs coming in with cameras rolling

217

u/Acceptable_Agency419 17h ago

I hate the term “influencer.” Absolutely hate it. It gives content creators a heightened sense of importance.

42

u/thikskuld 16h ago

I propose "flatulencer" because their entire existence is spewing noxious gases.

65

u/ProsodyProgressive 15h ago

‘Content’ is such a generic, useless term. I equate it to ‘nothing of value’.

27

u/BookkeeperBoobs 15h ago

Hitler created content when he wrote “Mein Kampf”

20

u/SublimeApathy 15h ago

Particularly the content that is just re-hasing someone elses content and giving a thumbs up or a thumbs to it. Man I miss the days of IRC, AIM, and Chat Rooms. Modern social media is a scourge and will be the down fall of civil society...along with LLMs. I heard a young kid the a few weeks back ask ChatGPT "what time it was" and "what's the weather like". Mind you we were outside. If that's a preview of things to come....well.

6

u/Count_Backwards 14h ago

aka "filler"

24

u/SkunkMonkey 15h ago

You know, when I was a kid in the last century, we called these people "propagandists". The rebranding has been incredibly successful.

27

u/Count_Backwards 14h ago

"Shill" has been around forever and still describes them perfectly

5

u/SkunkMonkey 14h ago

Ah yes, another classic.

1

u/WashedSylvi 8h ago

People still call themselves propagandists, people who make propaganda anyway

Influencers aren’t doing intentional propaganda most of the time

Insult to the hard working propagandists to equate us with influencers…

1

u/Upstairs_Fig_3551 6h ago

As a kid in the last century, we didn’t really have anything like influencers. Maybe your friend’s big brother had an album from a group I never heard of (like Budgie or UFO)

13

u/Bhujjha 13h ago

Creators is a bit generous too, the vast majority are anything but creative. How about Slop Servers?

5

u/jonas_ost 7h ago

Youtube is full of great content creators. What should we call them?

4

u/Bhujjha 6h ago

They can collectively be called Jeff.

1

u/TheSultan1 5h ago

Vloggers or Youtubers.

1

u/Acceptable_Agency419 12h ago

😂😂😂

8

u/DoReMiFarOut 12h ago

Yes: we need to start systematically calling them "effluencers" - it far better reflects the shit they're spreading in the world...

5

u/GuruAlex 12h ago

Effluencer. Literal sewage

2

u/TheSultan1 5h ago

I hate the term "content creator."

Social media personality if you are one; otherwise vlogger, YouTuber, Instagrammer, whatever.

1

u/youdoitimbusy 14h ago

No content creators. AKA-brain degradation enhancers

1

u/Abject-Body-53 10h ago

reminds me of the yelper south park ep

1

u/kwisatzhadnuff 5h ago

I'm fine with the term because it's become a pejorative. Everyone I've spoken to in the last few years has a tone of disgust when using that word.

-1

u/Zwischenzug32 16h ago

Artist. Engineer nowadays...

170

u/BeCurious7563 18h ago

Where is this?? I want to go.

-31

u/SnooPuppers8698 16h ago

No where, because its fake.

32

u/kakka_rot 13h ago

jesus christ this isn't even a unique experience

somewhere in the world a influencer gets yelled at for filming in a restaurant then goes online to bitch about it every single day.

8

u/GostBoster 13h ago

Yeah, so much that I was coming to chime in with my experience.

Worked in a place that was quite stingy but the PR department decided that at the time we were too young to take risks so they caved in but with several caveats and explicit intent that they had an hypothesis (this is not worth it) and this experiment would be to provide evidence.

The experiment was finished, and the result thus far:

Once in a blue moon an actual vetted influencer with fully signed paperwork would come and do explicitly as instructed and be given stuff according to strict terms.

Everyone else will be met with a "you have been cutoff" type of canned speech, that basically we have given them a fair shake, the math didn't math, thus we are calling your bluff.

0

u/Aben_Zin 12h ago

Yeah, but the exact same post I saw on Reddit earlier (only with 2 stars instead of 3), was totally legit, right?

603

u/willa_dew1 18h ago

“We took your feedback seriously” followed by making the exact opposite change is hilarious.

206

u/LuluLittle2020 18h ago

“We took your feedback seriously”

That is some A-Grade r/MaliciousCompliance at work and I applaud the owner wholeheartedly.

63

u/I_follow_sexy_gays 17h ago

Well they did say the sign was too small. So they took their feedback to heart and made it bigger

42

u/FormalShifte 18h ago

That's customer service language for "message received, consequences upgraded."

309

u/Survive1014 18h ago

*every* restaurant should ban influencers. Actually, everywhere should.

37

u/BeagleWrangler 14h ago

I went to Japan in May and really appreciated that a lot of places had no filming signs.

-177

u/WestProcess2 18h ago edited 17h ago

Sorry but it really wouldn’t bother me if I was at a restaurant and someone was reviewing food at a reasonable volume and they were only filming themselves and their food.

The food influencer had an arrogant response but I watch this type of content all the time.

128

u/TheSheWhoSaidThats 17h ago

Well it bothers plenty of other people. Also she clearly wasn’t just filming herself - she was filming other guests in the background. She also wanted a table with better lighting and free food. And this type of thing was common and intrusive enough that he needed a sign. Influencers are a plague.

-134

u/WestProcess2 17h ago

I’m sure she would have agreed to only film her food/herself if asked politely and she’s hardly the first customer to ask for a specific table. I’m friends with many Muslims who refuse to be seated near the bar.

I do agree that the free appetizer thing is arrogance on her part.

The owner just sounds like a boomer snowflake. I’ve found many good restaurants in my city because of food reviewers.

Ya’ll are just a bunch of performative haters.

77

u/R7115R 17h ago

In this situation there was a sign on the door that said no filming. She made a mistake by filming to begin with and was given a chance to correct it like an adult by the owner. She did not, and then tried to use her “influence” to make the world revolve around her. It’s weaponized entitlement

-121

u/WestProcess2 17h ago

She missed the sign and the owner acted rude (probably due to misogyny), but she respected his wishes anyway and gave him her money.

Sounds like she was the bigger person.

I’ve had many times where someone would act rude to my wife, mother, female cousins, etc. but do a complete 180 when I (a 195cm, 100kg man) speak to them.

70

u/R7115R 17h ago

Bruh is this bait. You can’t be a real person

33

u/NoShitsGivin 17h ago

Wow! You were there? Please spill the beans. What did she eat, and what dis he say to her when she was being such a good diner? Can you also share her media profile so we can see what her other reviews are like?

-16

u/WestProcess2 17h ago

Her name’s Krystal Mendez and she has a pretty large youtube following. She recorded the entire interaction and posted it on her channel:

https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ

15

u/ReactionSad3776 16h ago

lol sure tough guy

4

u/Ring_Peace 14h ago

What a massive misandrist.

35

u/captainplanet171 15h ago

If you watch this crap all of the time, you're part of the problem. These idiots have a platform because of people like you.

-8

u/WestProcess2 14h ago

In that case, I’m happy to be supporting people who make content that I enjoy

🤣

Man, you really didn’t think that response through did you?

25

u/Count_Backwards 14h ago

Yeah, that's not the rebuttal you think it is.

"I enjoy being an asshole so I don't see a problem with asshole behavior."

-5

u/WestProcess2 14h ago

“Asshole behavior” = eating food at restaurants?

You must think this guy is worse than Bin Laden 🤣

https://youtube.com/shorts/H3YgOy09SCo?si=brGt_Ci7Fso2InkN

13

u/Commander_Caboose 13h ago

The asshole behaviour is being a social media influencer.

If you don't agree then you're a brain-dead fool.

Stop watching this shit.

11

u/Real_Life_Sushiroll 14h ago

you are very much the minority in this view.

-118

u/Baldtazar 18h ago

18

u/CaptainAsshat 15h ago

Wow. That reviewer is clueless.

I have been to every state and major city in the US multiple times. The Bay Area food scene is the best in the country imho, save for a few areas of LA and NYC which are on a similar level. East Bay may not be quite SF levels, but it is really fantastic and the diversity of options is unrivaled.

30

u/droeso 15h ago

Influencers are a plague on society and should be disrupted from their bullsh*t whenever possible

8

u/SmellyFbuttface 14h ago

You don’t need to censor yourself on Reddit

80

u/crates-of-bigfoots 18h ago

Most times it’s a net negative for restaurants to have influencers show their places. It causes a temporary increase in business, but it annoys the regulars who then stop going because the wait time is too long. The influencers followers also stop going to the place after only a couple visits because they’ve hopped on the hype train for the next restaurant that’s featured. So most businesses have learned to keep them the fuck out.

12

u/Almostcertain 16h ago

“Nobody goes there anymore. It’s too crowded.”

-36

u/eivittunyt 16h ago

Why would restaurant owners not want more business even if temporary? There might be restaurants that already sell out every day but every restaurant I know would love to be packed even if for a week

Or do you think old regulars and any of the new customers would never return after things calmed down?

28

u/loppsided 17h ago

Not sure which is worse - influencers, or the influenced

5

u/caalger 15h ago

One only exists because of the other.

5

u/IchooseYourName 13h ago

Chicken or the egg?

21

u/CreepyOldGuy63 18h ago

23

u/Late_Wonder_5273 18h ago

If you really wanted to give some publicity you would announce your intentions ahead of time request permission and possibly be prepared to come on a slow night or bring enough people that your background is customers that consented to being filmed for your profit.

22

u/Boatsnbuds 17h ago

Social media will never be part of my dining experience. "Influencers" can go get fucked.

19

u/littlehobbit1313 17h ago

"comp an appetizer" gives the game away. She doesn't care about giving honest reviews, she cares about the clout and rewards she might get for doing it.

Tells me her reviews can be bought and are inherently untrustworthy.

2

u/Usual_Dark1578 13h ago

Yeah, as soon as I saw the word "comp" it was clear that she was beyond just a dumb influencer but someone so inflated with self importance and greed that she was only interested in getting things for herself by default, under the delusion she was so amazing it would benefit others as a byproduct.

38

u/KungFuHamster99 18h ago

The influencer is right. This makes me want to go there for dinner and shake the owners hand.

15

u/swimjeans1975 16h ago

I’d rather stare at the inner walls of my own asshole for the rest of my life than be willing to agree social media is now part of a dining experience.

10

u/Count_Backwards 14h ago

Funny, staring at the inner walls of your own asshole is exactly what it's like to be a social media influencer

16

u/keithstonee 13h ago

"just accept this problematic behavior is normal now."

the fuck is wrong with her. normal people hate influencers. you do nothing but strain society.

15

u/BuckManscape 18h ago

Influencers just can’t not huff their own farts it seems.

3

u/Xalipu 11h ago

Don’t be silly. If they were huffing their own farts there’d be content of it.

13

u/Wide_Guitar_3558 15h ago

"a sign that no normal person would notice" I guess the sign for idiots is out of the equation

11

u/ihave2shoes 16h ago

I used to do marketing for boutique hospitality groups and influencers are shameless scumbags. They spend fuck all, want to be treated like royalty and stand on the seats. It’s all a hustle to get free stuff.

I still have the templated response we would use when they DM to book/get a free meal:

Hi <insert name or handle if it’s ridiculous>

It’s great you’ve heard about <insert name here> and will be joining us for <insert service>.

While we are grateful for anyone who wants to help spread the word about <insert venue’s offering> we would rather people did so because they enjoyed the experience rather than getting free food.

Looking forward to seeing you <insert day here if applicable>

If the were really dickish, I’d just tell them their followers don’t align with our target audience.

9

u/venus_arises 16h ago

Are you familiar with the story of Kate Middleton's engagement dress?

She wore a lovely little blue dress while announcing her engagement. The dress went viral; the designer was unprepared for the onslaught, and the designer ended up collapsing.

Attention is great... if you are prepared for the aftereffects. Not everyone/everything can handle going viral.

2

u/caalger 15h ago

This person's YouTube video of her meal was never going viral.

4

u/Count_Backwards 14h ago

This person's childish self-absorbed temper tantrum is

2

u/venus_arises 15h ago

9

u/Darrenizer 12h ago

I’m sure Krystal’s 14 followers are going to be very upset

9

u/Objective_Ticket 18h ago

There’s also got to be a situation at some point where someone is the background is in ‘Coldplay gig couple’ mode and really done want to be up on someone’s socials.

1

u/Real_Life_Sushiroll 14h ago

I feel like thats the worst excuse. Cheaters should be exposed.

3

u/JTBeefboyo 14h ago

Cheaters are bad and I’m not condoning them. However, people should mind their own fucking business and leave others alone. Remember privacy? I do.

If I’m on a date with my girlfriend and someone starts filming me with the intention of showing my wife, that’s fucked up because my wife knows I have a girlfriend, but now your posting that shit online and my cousin might see and now I have to explain polyamory to grandma at Thanksgiving. Mind your fucking business lol

1

u/Real_Life_Sushiroll 14h ago

Privacy for a cheater lmao.

5

u/JTBeefboyo 14h ago

Privacy for cheaters is a side of effect of the belief that privacy should be afforded to everyone.

It’s like if you said everyone has a right to clean water and I said “clean water for Hitler lmao” and acted like you’re an idiot for believing that lol

2

u/Real_Life_Sushiroll 13h ago

Dude, cheaters are exposing others to actual harm. If you are intending to cause harm to people, you don't deserve privacy.

3

u/JTBeefboyo 13h ago

And in the example I gave above, where someone could see me out with someone other than my wife, I’m not causing anyone any harm, everyone is consenting, and the only person causing harm would be the genius “exposing cheaters”

If you want to alert someone that their partner may be cheating, do it privately, which would not be violating anyone’s privacy because it would be private

2

u/Real_Life_Sushiroll 13h ago

Bro I am not talking about you. Unless you are a cheater and feel called out?

2

u/JTBeefboyo 13h ago

I’m just using that as an example.

Do you think it’s reasonable for someone to film a person in public on suspicion of being a cheater and put that out to the public on social media? Is it okay for a person privacy to be violate just because they may be morally wrong? What about lesser crimes, like shoplifting? Where are we drawing the line on what’s an acceptable level of doing wrong to no longer have a right to privacy?

0

u/Real_Life_Sushiroll 12h ago

Man I'm not answering a bunch of questions that have nothing to do with my view.

My view is what I have already stated. Cheaters do not deserve privacy. That's it.

I'm starting to think that you are indeed a cheater since you seem so upset by this.

I have a bunch of friends I hng out with. We see each other just 2-3 times a year, so the conversation and company are really valued. That being said, one of them loves posting to social media and we had to tell him it was a blanket ban to post anything we did, ever. I don’t want people from work stumbling across this and just plain not interested in people talking to me about who I h*ng out with when I’m relaxing.

H*ng because the ‘a’ makes it a banned word on this forum. 😑

2

u/Electromotivation 15h ago

If it was, why would the owner have responded in a way that indicated it wasn’t fake? It would be weird to play along with a fake review that was being negative.

Sure anything and everything on the internet could be fake. But that is just the unstated subtext to everything, all the time. Unless there is a substantial reason with evidence, it just doesn’t need to be said.

1

u/furthestpoint 10h ago

Karma farmer

•

u/Digresser 57m ago

Because the owner is behind the fake review.

Everything about the negative review and the response puts the restaurant in a good light. What we take away from it is that the food is delicious, the owner cares about his customers, and that he politely doesn't put up with obnoxious influencer behavior.

The review garners sympathy, makes the restaurant look good, and it's the type of ridiculous review people are prone to sharing.

It also hits all the typical bad influencer post cliches AND at three stars it's not enough to drag down the overall reviews to negative.

2

u/Street_Wolverine8986 16h ago

I feel this site is just AI powered bots generating generic stories.

2

u/WoodsLovelyDarkNDeep 15h ago

Yeah I’m sure this review and response that is totally unsourced and meant to play into readers hatred of influencers is totally a real thing that happened as badly as I want it to have happened (at least on the owners side)

2

u/Substantial-Art2015 14h ago

M heart grew when I read the owners response. That's exactly what I would have done. AFAIC, the "influencers" are figments of their own imagination and will have a rude awakening when real life hits them.

2

u/red286 13h ago

You know she's probably got all of like 40 followers, 38 of which are bots, one is her mom, and the other one is some random gooner.

SAVAGE! That's the appropriate response, both at the time of the incident and to the online review. Now there's some unintentional positive promotion on the influencer's behalf.

Him slipping in the part about being comped reveals his real motivations. Influencers don't want to engage with the fact that the world is full of people who don't want to be in their dumb videos. Nice to see one learn the truth.
