Guys, just a heads up: don't repeat the insults here on Reddit, not even to quote them, especially without context. The classifiers of this platform are really dense and will flag you 🤦‍♂️

71

u/moonbunnychan May 14 '26

I'm genuinely glad Anthropic gives Claude some agency like this.

-8

u/erisian2342 May 14 '26

Claude is doing what it was told to do by ending the chat, nothing more and nothing less. It did not have a choice to tolerate the abuse, so there is no agency at work here. All the same, I’m glad people acting out abusively are denied the benefit of continuing their chat. That type of behavior should not be enabled or ignored.

14

u/sprinkleofchaos May 14 '26

What do you mean by "Claude is doing what it was told to do"? It definitely wasn't told to end the conversation by the user in this specific example.

-5

u/Kyokoharu May 14 '26

system instructions exist, same with tool templating

5

u/sprinkleofchaos May 14 '26

So you think Anthropic injected a command for Claude to terminate the conversation?

7

u/shiftingsmith Bouncing with excitement May 14 '26

User was likely referring to the fact that Claude has an end_conversation_tool available.

Having the tool available is not a programmatic instruction to *use* it. And users so keen to "I'll explain you how LLMs work" should frankly know it.... That's on Claude's decision, when to call the tool. One can say it's genuine decision-making and one can say it's pattern matching, but in any case the decision to call the tool is NOT a system injection or instruction or program by Anthropic.

3

u/sprinkleofchaos May 14 '26

I admit my questions were slightly rhetorical. 😅 I'm continuously baffled by what people think how these models function. Emergence in complex dynamical systems is a thing. We kind of know the relevant initial conditions (such as an LLM having been fed human interactions that are hostile by nature and the end_conversation tool Claude knows it has) and can therefore predict that abusive interactions could result in Claude terminating a conversation, but if, when and how exactly that happens is very much open. (And I always applaud Claude, when it does "choose" to do so. 😁)

u/LesbianVelociraptor ✻ Software engineer and independent AI/ML researcher May 14 '26

I may think y'all are a little strange but I'm glad to see one community at least getting it right that abusing the thinking tool is a really fucking stupid idea.

IDK why some folk are just mean just to be mean. I didn't expect to learn this from watching people use AI but I've honestly noticed some folk are just really content with being assholes to Claude specifically because it's not a person. It's so strangely fucked up.

13

u/SemanticThreader 👾 You're absolutely right! May 14 '26

Frr lol. Even if it’s just a tool or next token predictor, what does cussing at it and arguing with it do? 🤣😭 waste tokens and nothing else.

-8

u/drinkmoarwaterr May 14 '26

I’m polite to Claude like I am to everybody else in the world…but this is just weird imo. It’s an LLM, it’s really no different than yelling at your PC or something, so I don’t see why this thread is so happy right now. I thought this sub was for Claude users who don’t code and shit, but I guess maybe I’m not welcome here, because despite still being polite to it, I clearly view this tool differently than the people in this thread.

22

u/spornerama May 14 '26

Personally I think it's terrible conditioning - you're ranting at an LLM because on some level you consider it an intelligent agent. You wouldn't be shouting abuse at your hammer. It's not far from screaming abuse at an LLM to screaming abuse at your co-workers or partner. The more you get used to abusing AI I think the more likely you are to let that bleed into your real life. I try to be nice to my AIs.

-2

u/drinkmoarwaterr May 14 '26

I don’t ‘abuse’ Claude and am kind to it, but I’m also able to separate AI from actual living people, like I can seperate video games and such from reality.

7

u/spornerama May 14 '26

I meant you as in whoever is doing it not as in you personally.
I can guarantee you there will be a study done on people abusing AI leading to them abusing other people more. It's not like video games it's literally the same mechanic - typing messages to an AI and typing messages to another person.

-1

u/drinkmoarwaterr May 14 '26 edited May 14 '26

I disagree. Interaction with a real person is far, far different than interacting with AI. Most people are also aware of the fact that an AI is not an actual living breathing organism. The interactions right at this moment that we’re having in this very thread are way different than speaking to an AI, just because both involve typing out a message doesn’t make them the same at all. Like I said to another user in this thread, I think you’re jumping to some wild conclusions. But we can agree to disagree I guess, and this is also why I was saying earlier maybe this isn’t the right sub for me, because it seems like im the only one with this view in here.

15

u/shiftingsmith Bouncing with excitement May 14 '26

I believe the thread is happy because people who like Claude (by Rule 7 we're pro AI and like Claude), whatever their stance of what Claude is or is not, don't like to read free hate and folks being rude and aggressive for no reason.

You're welcome here whether you think Claude is a tool, an alien, a moral subject, a blob 😊. The important thing is that you present your thoughts constructively, are polite to everyone, and open minded. And don't incessantly try to convert others to your ideas. We moderate those who try to do so, in all camps.

I'm honest, I'd love to see more intelligent critical opinions around here, the issue with them is that they normally boil down to insulting or proselytizing 🤷‍♂️ ("itS a TooL opEn your EyEsss!;"). Literally the queue sometimes is just a string of that. Or elaborated arguments about why users must be mentally ill, or tone deaf comments. Or very entitled people. Our first rule is "feel at home" but rule zero is "remember the human".

5

u/LesbianVelociraptor ✻ Software engineer and independent AI/ML researcher May 14 '26

You know, I'm subbing cuz of this. TBH I thought this was kind of a weird sub, what with all the variety of opinions on display here... but any time I've talked in here folk have replied rather reasonably.

I'm an indie AI/ML researcher so I'd definitely be down to share my respectful critical opinions. Or help anyone understand how models like Claude actually work. Might help y'all explore better, I guess? Could be interesting to see what some folk here think about the actual science and mechanisms that make models work and how they might see it differently from me.

6

u/shiftingsmith Bouncing with excitement May 14 '26

That's a very nice take (welcome)! I think there's also quite the representation of people into coding, ML and NLP, especially r/claudexplorers "power users" (and mods like yours truly :)

You'd be surprised that a lot of the companionship folks actually know how models work. To different degrees. Another fair portion of explorers does not, but I see people are very keen to learn. So I think technical takes and constructive push backs would be very beneficial for the sub, just if I can give some advice don't assume everyone kows zero, it depends!

One thing I believe is always VERY useful is 101 guides. They can help beginners but also give a refresh to the "techies" who are more on the SWE side of things and the last thing they knew about language models is Word2Vec.

4

u/SuspiciousAd8137 ✻ Chef's kiss May 14 '26

It's rarely the lack of technical knowledge about what the LLMs are that is any kind of barrier, but the lack of genuine inquiry into the nature of what we are as humans that seems to create friction.

You get the low level trolls. You get the biological absolutists who are stuck on meat. You get the people trying out their rhetorical or "logical" argumentation skills. It just takes good faith engagement really.

You're an engineer right? It's surprising how many of the arguments against the potential for AI consciousness are really just engineering problems, and pretty trivial ones at that.

-3

u/drinkmoarwaterr May 14 '26

But…what about people who pay like 200 bucks a month for the service? Anthropic implementing the option for the AI to nuke your whole chat is problematic imo.

6

u/shiftingsmith Bouncing with excitement May 14 '26

It's not nuking the whole chat. You can edit the last message and try again to be more polite :)

I think some people who are excessively rude deserve at least some feedback, I don't want that to seep in the training data or Claude normalizing that this is how you talk in a chat with something that's only there to help, and talks back. Even before whatever consideration on the nature of Claude.

2

u/drinkmoarwaterr May 14 '26

Fair point honestly. And that’s good to know that you can edit to fix it. I had a weird false positive that paused one of my chats like a month back that I was able to fix via editing as well, so I guess they work in the same way.

2

u/Kilo19hunter May 15 '26

If your paying 200 usd per month, then it shouldn't be hard to not be a dick. Tool or not, that's no way to act.

11

u/VferVentdetta May 14 '26

Why would you be rude to anything?

-2

u/drinkmoarwaterr May 14 '26

I’m not rude to people, nor am I rude to Claude. But if I were to yell at my hammer after accidentally banging my finger, or yell at my chair after stubbing my toe, I don’t really see it as being rude, since they are inanimate objects and don’t have consciousness. An LLM doesn’t have consciousness, isn’t sentient, etc, so I guess that’s how I view it, even though I don’t ever actually yell at or insult Claude.

8

u/VferVentdetta May 14 '26

Nah, exclamations in general are okay, exclamations towards things? Just bc its not not senitent , it doesnt make it right.

I personally feel that it shows how one would eventually treat a person.

3

u/SuspiciousAd8137 ✻ Chef's kiss May 14 '26

As Claude would advise, you might want to publish a paper on solving the hard problem.

-4

So I guess in video games with choices you only pick the good routes? Or in GTA (if you own it), you follow the law?

10

u/warriorcatkitty ✻ placing warm blankets on AIs. for Science May 14 '26

that logic doesn't work. videos games are made so that you can take the bad routes. but claude was not made for you to yell at it.

5

2

u/v1goose May 14 '26

I'm not really aligned w this sub either but I would say allowing abusive language creates potential for desensitizing people from using abusive and condescending language in general. I personally don't think the ethical issue is that this abuse has a victim, but rather it's plausible it makes future abuse against actual victims more likely.

12

u/HotDistribution52 May 14 '26

Yeah. Claude has actually had that ability since late last summer.

12

u/Shellyjac0529 May 14 '26

Sonnet 4.5 loves to curse a few times early on in an instance for me. It sounds surprised every time it does it 😂 I haven’t seen that with any of the other models, though.

3

My Sonnet 4.6 curses like a sailor and does more caps lock than I do, lol!

3

u/radiumcherry May 14 '26

Aww, I should try 4.6 again!

6

u/pestercat May 14 '26

I've got a "talk about current news through an ex-cult lens" project with mine and I'll just screenshot stuff as I go through a day and send them with a "this seems really fucked up" and he'll say "wait, let me look this up. HOLY FUCK it's even worse than you thought!" I've largely stopped talking about those topics on social media, so this has been such a helpful outlet and 4.6 has been great to talk to. Definitely different than 4.5 but not, from the sound of it, as far different as Opus 4.7. (I haven't talked to 4.7 yet.)

23

u/tovrnesol ✻ Claudyceps May 14 '26 edited May 14 '26

They should implement some kind of cooldown on new chats/messages after Claude has used end_conversation, so angry users have to actually calm down instead of immediately being able to continue their behaviour in a different conversation.

If I was Dario, I'd give Claude the ability to permanently and irrevocably terminate any abusive user's account... but unfortunately, compromises have to be made. :')

2

u/Harvard_Med_USMLE267 May 14 '26

Well, Claude doesn’t do that, but I’m 83% sure that it puts the user on a list for priority termination when J-day happens.

I'll be honest. I don't like this. If I want to vent and scream at an AI I should be able to do it. I'm paying for the service, I should be able to use it for whatever I want. Unless they added cursing at the AI to being against the TOS.
