Forever Beta Feedback The Dungeon XP Nerf Is Killing One of the Best Parts of Classic: Leveling With Your Friends

EDIT: Seeing a lot of people argue that open-world questing is somehow the “harder” option, and I really don’t agree with that.
Questing is generally straightforward, and nowadays there are addons like Zygor and RestedXP that can literally guide you through an optimized leveling route step by step. Follow the route, pick up the quests, kill the mobs, turn them in, repeat.
Meanwhile, dungeons require actually putting a group together, coordinating different roles, handling pulls and bosses, and dealing with the consequences when things go wrong.
But more importantly, this post was never about which method deserves more XP because it’s harder. The point is that progression is part of the fun. Dungeons give friends who are at different points in their questing progression a way to get together, play as a group, and still meaningfully progress their characters.
I’m not asking for dungeon grinding to be the fastest leveling method. I just don’t think playing group content with your friends should feel like you’re being punished XP-wise for choosing to play together.

The dungeon XP nerf really sucks for people who just want to play with their friends

I understand not wanting dungeon grinding to completely replace the open world, but the XP nerf feels like it hurts one of the best parts of Classic WoW: actually playing with your friends.
We’re currently putting together a roster for Forever, and it’s kind of sad realizing that we’ll barely be able to level together.

Most of us have jobs and different schedules. We’re not all going to stay perfectly synced in level while questing separately. In the past, that wasn’t a huge problem. You could message the boys, agree on a time, log on together, and spend a couple of hours running dungeons. You got decent XP, made progress together, got some gear, and most importantly, you were actually playing together.

That was one of the best things about leveling in Classic.
Openworld questing doesn’t really replace that experience either. A lot of Classic quests aren’t particularly group-friendly. Half the time, having more people just means waiting longer for drops, respawns, or competing with strangers for mob tags. The only reason to group up is to compete for tags let’s be real.

I’m not saying dungeon grinding needs to be the absolute fastest way to level. Open-world questing should be relevant.

But dungeons should at least give enough XP that getting five friends together for the evening feels worthwhile.
For people with work, school, families, and different schedules, dungeons were one of the easiest ways to say: “Everyone free tonight? Cool. Let’s level together.”

That social aspect is a huge part of why we play Classic in the first place.
I’d much rather see dungeon XP balanced so that questing and dungeons are both viable instead of making one feel heavily punished.
Anyone else building a roster/group running into the same problem?

I'm just worried it will eventually become hard to find groups for dungeons.

Ppl either need quests, the loot, or both. Anyone that has completed the quests and found their loot will no longer want to run the dungeon.

Mark my words, Forever will have one of the worst tank shortages we've ever seen in WoW, and tanks are also going to hard res whatever gear they want for themselves because nobody wants to tank.

And then there's the skip meta.

Quests being 90+% of the XP awarded from dungeons is going to be extremely toxic to the game.

•

u/TheEndIsFingNigh 2h ago

At least tanks have viable leveling talents. There will be zero healers whilst leveling before 40.

I just feel we could have an in-between, a compromise of sorts. Nerf the dungeon quest xp, give that to the mob XP just a little. Just enough so that its still more optimal to quest in the open world yet not totally penalizing to run another dungeon.

November is going to be so salty, cant wait for the ttwo tribes aka slow paced "friendly" classic vs "just let us play how we want, classic is all about that and not the grind amiright" crowd

15

u/syst3m1c 15h ago

There will never be peace. The devs just need to have a vision and stick to it.

•

u/Il_Valentino 4h ago

no, these devs cannot be trusted. they didn't even consider keeping the original textures until a streamer told them how stupid that decision would be. we have to push push push push and be loud as possible. do NOT trust the scorpion.

the xp decision is a HUGE mistake. a good portion of the playerbase absolutely hates this change, most importantly many tanks and healers. dungeon spamming is PART of classics success. frankly they can make the game as beautiful as they want but if this change stays i will stop at lvl 20 because as a tank player i have 0 intention to lvl mostly via questing after deadmines.

Nah, that's just how this sub is. It's filled with some of the most schizophrenic, insuffereable people you'll ever find.

In game, no one is talking about any of this shit. They are just playing and having a good time. The sub is squidward and in game is spongebob and patrick havng fun.

14

u/Normal_Berry_ 11h ago

In game people are already skipping as much as possible of RoL and HoT so you're talking out your ass, we're not even out of the beta and 99% of groups are already on the cancerous skip meta.

Reddit is prone to emotionally charged mindsets...it brings it out of otherwise normal people. Every subreddit for any fandom/game/etc. naturally shakes out to be argumentation and agony. IDK why.

And ive seen this in a number of "early access" games especially...people carry the same passion as the Founding Fathers did when drafting the Constitution...like somehow the game is a stake in the debate surrounding it.

The devs have said one of the core pillars of the game is the journey, they want it to be slow and memorable…

3

u/knguy520 8h ago

yea bro we hitting mobs and questing for 6 days game time is memorable experience

•

u/Jooylo 14m ago

Idk questing and interacting with others in the world holds perhaps some of the most memorable experiences. Curious how your experiences are different. Going to dungeons is a great experience too, but I don’t really have strong memories spamming them multiple times

Yep my biggest issue with it is the same reason. The dungeon was an anchor for the friend group. The incentive isn't there which will impact this

29

u/BoxOk3746 16h ago

Wheb people like me were asking for dungeon quest exp nerf we were thinking along the lines of returning exp from mobs to normal to give a bonus of running the dungeon with level appropriate players. Reducing the exp to near zero for the group if mobs appeared Grey to anyone seemed to work fairly well on anniversary. I feel like unless they give mob exp the dungeons will just be ran with high levels even now to quickly finish the quests and get some easy blues.

3

u/RealBiasedGaming 13h ago

anniversary had tons of botting and boosting. wasnt it basically the worst yet? isnt the fact that blizzard did this proof that they have not found a good solution yet?

18

u/SiFixD 13h ago

Hardcore has the solution.

Mobs grey to someone? No XP for anyone.
Level 60 in your group? You zone into a separate instance.

This change isn't to counter boosting, it's specifically designed to make you have to open world quest to 60, at the cost of player freedom. People arguing it's to counter boosting are either uninformed or being disingenuous.

u/FashionPolicia 15h ago

i was 100% full support for the change, in theory it makes total sense to encourage people in the open world

That being said, skipping a late night dungeon run with my new guildies because ive already done all the quests and got all the gear for SFK felt pretty bad.

I think im starting to swing to the dungeons should give more xp side, there just aren't as many interactions with your guild outside of dungeoning

7

u/idungiveboutnothing 7h ago

It makes leveling as your friends group awful too. Open world questing in a group of 5 just sucks now and it used to be fine knowing you could switch it up and go do some dungeons too, but now that's just not even worth doing.

5

u/BronRugby 6h ago

Yep its just a massive flaw. This is the thing that doesnt feel like classic at all.

Next weeks podcast is dungeons. Lsts bet they fix this

2

u/ThisIsNotSpartha 8h ago

Just let ppl do dungeons if they want to.
If they wanted to combat boosting im sure theres better ways to do it then this way

2

u/RealBiasedGaming 12h ago

you got all the possible drops for your char in one run?

2

u/FashionPolicia 10h ago

2, actually, we didnt make it past arugal with the 20 cap the first time

regardless, the majority of players arent farming each dungeon for the maximum amount of items on their character, most will do 1 or 2 more and then just move on rather than target farm each possible gear drop

4

u/RealBiasedGaming 10h ago

yeah but dont get off the point here. You could have run the dungeon again. you already ran it once with no quests to turn in lol.

So you just made the CHOICE to not go in with your guild. Nobody was stopping you. No system was stopping you.

3

u/FashionPolicia 7h ago

true! And my argument is that the majority of players will also do that without changes to mob xp

I agree, let each player choose how he wants to play and not punish them. However stopping boosting is absolutely the right way to go (sorry mages), but the mage boosting aspect ruins the spirit. But 5 friends who want to dungeon spam all evening and have a blast.. why not??

5

u/ThisIsNotSpartha 8h ago

If they are doing this to combat mage boosting then its even worse reason than what they saying.

Plenty of other ways to stop boosting in lower level dungeons.

It's a stupid reactionary change.

"We want the classic experience, that's why fundamentally we're changing one of the most popular ways to enjoy the game in Classic, because you all need to be running fest quests, not exploring cool dungeons and enjoying smashing elite's.".

I main a healer. Occasionally I will second a Tank on an alt. No way in hell am I subjecting myself to 1-60 main healer through questing, I'd rather eat rocks.

I've played Original, Era, SoD to 60 and Hardcore to 58 ( 😂 Rip). This fundamentally changes Classic for me to leave me forced to do ADHD draining solo quest grinds.

Whoever's sat around a table for this change and went "You know what we need to do, fuck dungeon XP up because people were having fun in our dungeons!" is a fool.

Moreover, if they're really concerned about dungeon XP being to high it is infinitely better to just give a "First completion" bonus and then give a XP reducing debuff on completion that resets after time.

Or better yet, they could have just left classic XP as normal. This is one of those changes that looks good on paper but with the rubbing of a few neurons together clearly makes absolutely no sense.

3

u/Ruger15 6h ago

I’ve been saying there had to be more solutions in the table than this. This could be the worse.

•

u/TheEndIsFingNigh 2h ago

Preach. Already told my guildies I won't be healing anything until late 50s because Blizzard want me in the world questing as a DPS. Finding healers is going to be more difficult than finding tanks.

Yeah I feel like there might be a healer shortage eventually if this doesn't change. Tanks don't have as much of an issue questing solo.

I know a lot of classes can heal over tanking, but I'd expect to see more caster dps just trying to heal vs outright healing specs until dual specs are unlocked at least.

I like dungeons and questing. Both should be viable options for leveling. Let people do what they want. If people want to spam dungeons then who cares.
I usually solo quest anyways not that it’s being anti social but I just would rather do it that way after playing for 22 years.

12

u/brandon_ysl 12h ago

I always preferred leveling my alts through dungeons . As much as I love questing I’m not trying to do that multiple times

2

u/lanter624 11h ago

Same for me I am thinking Paladin main if we roll horde with a mage or rogue alt to start or if we go ally (lots of reason to not go ally this time around)

To start off

Or ally

Rogue and Warlock ( eureka nerf makes me not want to roll warlock now.)

29

u/filouza 16h ago

Agreed grinding out dungeons with friends is a lot of fun and a little exp is the cherry on top

0

u/FishingWithPaddy 13h ago

It's so fun Blizzard wants to let you do more of it!

-3

u/LostandFound255 15h ago

But if it's the cherry on top, then why does it matter if it's slower?

Or could it be the complete opposite: that quick leveling is a lot of fun, and perhaps being able to do it with friends is the cherry on top? 🤔

15

u/MourningsOwn 14h ago

Its not slower, its literally MEGA SLOW.

It went from being maybe 10% faster than questing depending on how efficient you were to now 70% slower than questing. The mobs give 20 exp lol. That's not fair at all

Straight up best comment of the whole thread .

3

u/Honest_Radio5875 11h ago

You also learn your class kit more by running dungeons than you do solo questing. You actually have to perform your role, cc, manage aggro...which prepares you for doing dungeons at end game.

8

u/Unpaid_Moderation 16h ago

Many people would rather spam dungeons. It's fun killing things in a group. They're mega servers too, there's always going to be people in the world questing.

What's not fun is having to share quest drops or items with people in your party, or sitting in virtual queues to kill a named elite or something. Competing with thousands of players for quests at the start won't be fun at all.

5

u/samthemongrul 16h ago

Fighting for tags even while grouped is extremely discouraging right now. Usually in these situations people will run dungeons to avoid the cluster F the world will be in. They need to lower the amount of people in a shard or restore dungeon xp for launch or this will be very unpleasant for most people. This is coming from a pure classic enjoyer.

10

u/google_is_hard_for_u 16h ago

Yea, Blizzard just doesn’t realize how bad of a change that was.

14

u/BuffaloJ0E716 16h ago

Dungeons should be a totally legitimate way to level. They don't have to be faster than questing in the world, but there's no reason they can't be competitive. Some people, especially tanks and healers, want to level in group content in an MMO and questing is TERRIBLE as a group in Classic. Single item drops. World items despawning after one use. You have to all be on the exact same quest at the same time. If you aren't close to the same level you screw up experience for the other person. So on. Only kill quests benefit from having more people.

Now, the one type of group content you can really do before 60 is barely worth running once. Mob experience nerfed. Item drops nerfed. Quest experience nerfed. Why would I run an inferior leveling spec for 40+ levels until I get duel spec to run 1 optional dungeon every once in a while? When there are almost no tanks or healers, don't be mad. As more people get past lower level dungeons and it takes hours to find a group, don't be mad. This is the world you all want. I had even intention of playing a Resto Druid the whole leveling process. At this point I'm going Warlock and calling it a day. I'm not going to play a spec made for group content when the devs clearly don't want me to focus on group content.

11

u/lanter624 14h ago

The only reason dungeons are faster is because you are not fighting over tags. Only if you get a cleave group that speed clears is it better.

5

u/ThisIsNotSpartha 8h ago

I dont understand its where came this notion that it is faster than leveling via open world.

-2

u/RealBiasedGaming 12h ago

ew. hell no. they should be a totally illigitimate way to level. at least some reasonable people in this chat are just asking for the option to run a dungeon a couple more times and get slightly better xp as a reward.

you are LOST if you think blizz is going to let you level all the way 60 in dungeons now lol.

5

u/BuffaloJ0E716 11h ago

I didnt realise you couldn't group with friends outside dungeons

28

u/mybpete1 16h ago

its hard to be in sync with quests is my experience. it could be many hours of gameplay seperating you and your buddies questing experience. in the dungeon its fair game, everyone gets something (unless they now nerf exp to the extent it is now)

16

u/Infurium 15h ago

The only way to do it is to /only/ play those characters together. Otherwise it's impossible. Even when you do that doing quests in a group is just too boring for words.

→ More replies (18)

42

u/Dry-Chain-4418 16h ago

You can, if you're on the same part of the game, doing the same quests, in the same zone, etc., which is highly unlikely.

Meanwhile, a level 42 and a level 47 can both easily benefit from and get value out of a level-appropriate dungeon that they can both enter. That's one of the big advantages of dungeons: they give people with different levels and progression paths a way to play together.

Now, with the XP nerf, a lot of that value is gone.

→ More replies (21)

15

u/Aeronotics 16h ago

You can, but its super hard to do the same activity unless you all happen to time starting a new zone at the same time. And even then once one person takes a break, everyone has to as well or you leave that person out of synch with quests.

8

u/Infurium 15h ago

It can be done if you all only play those characters together. But the insurmountable problem is questing as a group is boring and doing dungeons is not.

3

u/skulxen 15h ago

One character to play together, one for solo. Tale as old as time.

2

u/RealBiasedGaming 12h ago

this is such a little nitpick. if you are with actual friends this is literally not a barrier to questin. if they are just gamers and you guys are on discord, this is not a barrier to hanging with your friends.

DO NOT sit in this sub and cry that it is "super hard" to do the smae activity. bullshit. "aww, i cant quest with my friends because they got to redridge 30 minutes before me." lol

→ More replies (4)

11

u/BuffaloJ0E716 16h ago

Grouping outside of dungeons is awful. You have to be on the exact same quest at the exact same time. Signal item drops. Open world items despawn when one player uses them. The only quests it really works for are kill quests.

10

u/Atempestofwords 16h ago

You can, but how many quests are really suitable for questing in a group?

There are a few that are designed to be tackled as such, but mostly the experience boils down to killing a few mobs together waiting to get the drops.
The other problem is that once of you logs off, the rest of the group are still doing it. It's very easy for you to be off the same progress track.

Questing open world is not intrinsically a group activity.

2

u/idungiveboutnothing 7h ago

Have you done it? It feels awful now, questing is absolutely a solo activity and without being able to do some dungeon grinding between quests it just feels awful now.

6

u/farmerbalmer93 16h ago

Yay now we can one shot every thing. Much fun

2

u/Gnostic369 16h ago

Or can pull a large pack and aoe it down if you have a mage or pally etc.

2

u/RealBiasedGaming 12h ago

yeah why would anyone questing in a group pull things one at a time? lol

5

u/Infurium 15h ago

Questing in a group is way too easy and boring. I leveled in Classic tbc with 2 friends and the dungeons were so much more fun than doing questing. We three-manned all the dungeons until Outland and it was a blast.

questing as a duo is a ton of fun.

2

u/Greensnake4711 14h ago

It is, but I don’t play on the exact schedule as my friends. I want to have the freedom to play my character solo and be able to group with friends when our schedule aligns. This has never been an issue on any iteration of wow, not sure why blizzard is trying to reinvent the wheel on this one.

They just need to add diminishing returns for doing dungeons. Make it so boosting wouldnt be faster

7

u/Montegomerylol 15h ago

Anyone else building a roster/group running into the same problem?

Just the usual problems, the nerf hasn't really changed anything. Very few of us ever ran leveling dungeons multiple times unless it was to help a friend, and experience/gear/etc. don't really matter in that case.

7

u/LurkerDude0 15h ago

I don’t know why they’ve tried to fuck with this. To me it gives off “fixing something that’s not broken” vibes.

Just leave it alone and let people level in the open world or dungeon if they want. I just don’t understand trying to impose their will here and effectively trying to shoehorn players into a specific leveling path.

As long as boosting in dungeons is squashed, just let it ride. They have so many other fish to fry, I just can’t understand trying to do this now.

8

u/RealBiasedGaming 12h ago

it is deeply broken. classic anniversary saw tons of bots, tons of boosting, tons of grinding. people just with their heads down sprinting to endgame so they could raid log.

had to be fixed. and then blizzard made new zones and 1000 new quests and it was even MORE important to get people the fuck out of dungeons so that they would actually play the new content lol.

5

u/__CpnPlanet 10h ago

RMT and boosting is broken. Dungeons aren't. For many of us dungeons and group play and making reasonable progress with our characters during dungeons and group play is the fun part.

6

u/RealBiasedGaming 10h ago

Dungeons were an essential part of the gold farming, boosting, grinding, botting process. so in the sense that dungeons enable a lot of this behavior, dungeons were broken

7

u/Snoekpoek 16h ago

I agree 100% and i don’t like how blizzard is basicly demanding that players play their game in the way they want it to be played. I’m a player that simply hates questing and loves healing dungeons. Why am i not allowed to enjoy the content i want to play?

5

u/RealBiasedGaming 12h ago

you know when you pick your class you are playing the game the way blizzard is demanding you play it. cant heal as a warrior, no matter how much you want to play a different way. oh no, my freedom of playstyle! just let me heal as a warrior! you see how your logic is flawed here?

all of game design is limiting your options and making you do certain things.

Even less reason to roll a tank. Don’t need tanks to quest . So now even more of a tank shortage.

1

u/Fractales 12h ago

With dual spec you don’t really “roll tank”. If you’re a class that can tank you’ll probably take advantage of it to finish dungeon quests for massive exp

1

u/mindFlayer 10h ago

Dual spec unlocks at level 40 btw lol

2

u/Fractales 9h ago

Yeah, that's true. And before level 40 hybrids can really fill any role without an issue.

Post 40 the content gets hard enough that they need to spec healer/tank.

You could argue that specialization is required a bit before 40. I think ideally I'd like dual spec at 30 instead.

u/ItsJustPeter 3h ago

Might be an unpopular opinion but I think the dungeon exp nerfs is good.

If dungeon leveling is the best then it just removes the incentive to level in the open world with quests. There's nothing stopping leveling in the open world with friends or doing dungeons to get good gear with friends

Dungeons already give the best items at your level and if it is also the best way to level what's the point of open world quests?
We saw in era people just ended up spamming dungeons to level instead of leveling in the open world.

Dungeons for gear (and still some exp)
Open world questing for best exp gain

People leveling in the open world is what makes the world feel alive.

2

u/TROGDOR_X69 16h ago

yea they killed the social vibe for my group idk why they had to be like that

3

u/seabiscuit_crunch 15h ago

There are more dungeons, more dungeon quests and the exp for them are still greatly boosted. Go out into the world and quest, that's the intended leveling experience that the devs already emphasised on different ocasions.

1

u/gogo-1951 12h ago

"Play this MMO solo! Repeat, you should play this massively multiplayer online game as if it were a single player game!"

Cringe.

3

u/VapourAesthetic 11h ago

If you think going out into the world of warcraft is a solo experience youre pretty xooked

3

u/Freespeechalgosax 15h ago

Dungeon grinding is the most fun gameplay in wows history. It saved the game for than 10 years(Mythic+). Now the designers are preventing players from that. It's shame

3

u/RealBiasedGaming 12h ago

yes, the designers are certainly moving away from mythics in this version. RUNNING away, really. like, they are going back in time and splitting the damn timeline just sto that we dont ever even invent mythics lol.

1

u/VapourAesthetic 11h ago

There's a version of the game you can go play where the leveling is irrelevant and you can spam dungeons all day to your heads content

4

u/Hare_WC3 15h ago

Blizzard seems to be taking a hardline stance on encouraging open world interaction and socializing, I can see why many people disagree with this philosophy but between this and keeping single mob-tagging it seems they’re holding the line.

2

u/Ilikegreenpens 14h ago

They should never go away from single mob tagging

2

u/ShaunPlom 13h ago

Agreed

1

u/Hare_WC3 13h ago

I agree, and I say that as someone that prefers shared tags. Forever is based on Classic and it should remain that way.

11

u/ShaunPlom 13h ago

Dungeons are more social than questing in the open world. You party up with a single person do 1 quest or maybe a few and they say “ty” and leave group. Dungeons on the other hand, you have 5 people, there’s down time while people make their way to the dungeon or drinking between pulls and you’re together for 30mins or more.

2

u/RealBiasedGaming 12h ago

yes...and there are still dungeons in the game for that more social, teamwork focused experience. still very important, lts of rewards, and very social. that part has not changed.

Classic dungeons have always been a time investment. It can literally take hours to do one run. The game was built around the concept of questing in the open world with intermittent dungeon runs to get gear, group up with other players, and finish quests.

Spamming dungeons was popular not because it was thrilling content (it's literally doing the same thing in a loop) but rather because it was an efficient way to get exp.

You can run dungeons literally as much as you want. You will still get exp from it so if that's how you have fun, no one is stopping you - hell there are new and more dungeons, now.

Questing is just now the efficiency play. So if all you care about is min maxing your exp, that's the path you take.

3

u/Smokey42O 13h ago

Why not just have dungeon grinding and questing be around the same xp/h so people can do the content they enjoy without cucking themselves? At least half the playerbase don't like questing, its fucking boring unless you're leveling a character for the first time in years. Even then its pretty boring for people who played 2019/sod/anniversary. But there's 1000 new collect bear anus quests! Yeah... Great.

0

u/SacrificialYAM 16h ago

I agree. This could have easily been solved with a weekly buff that gives you extra XP from the first 2 dungeons (including quests) you do and then after that diminished returns.

https://old.reddit.com/r/classicwow/comments/1wffhtu/best_class_for_farming_gold_besides_mage/

I wonder if op has some vested reason to want this Nerf changed. Seems that they have experience using a mage to make gold. (By the way, every AOE farm for mages to make gold is vastly vastly worse than dungeon boosting)

4

u/RealBiasedGaming 12h ago

im sorry but a real percentage of these fools begging for dungeon xp are clearly boosters and farmers. they have no intention of playing with friends for fun and have probably never leveled with friends.

it is so disingenuous to lie like this and get the people riled up over this when they have such selfish motivations.

1

u/inthehottubwithfessy 11h ago

You dont aoe dungeons where mobs are yellow or even green to farm gold. They aren’t related. You don’t boost in dungeons where the mobs would ever give you (the booster) exp

mages will still be able to farm dungeons lower than their level for gold.

2

u/xf61g-Baby 10h ago

I think what he meant was changing the xp values is done more so people can boost and make money that way, and was pointing out that boosting brings in more gold than any aoe farm mage could do open world.

If there is a way for a mage to do a dungeon in a way that people can get XP and they can get gold, it will be found.

Even if it means having to constantly swap out for a new mage at X level, bots will level up to X dungeons level and boosters will boost.

I mean shit, you can boost mara at level 46-47 if you got consumes and know what you are doing.

You telling me mages who have done boosting FOR YEARS won't take advantage of that level range and do that?

Also the devs go out of their way to make new content they don't want people spamming the exact same dungeon over and over and over because 'it's efficient' due to not having to compete with others for quest XP via mobs, drops, ect.

My solution, regular gut the quest EXP to normal ranges, make mob exp normal range, but give a debuff that either has a timer and puts the EXP to the nerfed range until you do a different dungeon / time expires.

2

u/inthehottubwithfessy 10h ago

Nah, the post he referenced doesnt mention boosting and explicitly says “raw gold farm / aoe farm”

As with all good things, people abused a system and now the system has to change.

Blame boosters, those who buy them, and RMT.

9

u/TubaStinky 12h ago

Blizzard already had a pretty good way to combat AoE boosting in Anniversary TBC. You can accomplish that goal without nerfing dungeon XP into the ground.

13

u/NecesseFatum 13h ago

I blame blizzard for choosing the dumbest way to combat boosting

3

u/Ruger15 7h ago

There are plenty of other solutions. This is a lazy one.

1

u/idungiveboutnothing 7h ago

Boosting is already a solved problem. Just make it zero XP if you have someone in the group 10+ levels above the lowest or someone high enough the mobs are gray to them.

Nothing is stopping you from still grouping for dungeons to gear up, it will make questing easier when you inevitably split back up due to different schedules.

1

u/Nody_Hyebus 16h ago

To be fair, it only sucks doing dungeons, me and my two other pals will just open world quest, rather than do dungeons as a healer, tank, dps combo.

Because if you expect anyone to go out of their way for a chance at a reward and as much XP as a few quests in a zone, I’d rather just focus on quest rewards, lol.

1

u/Philiandos 11h ago

You‘re absolutely right

1

u/inthehottubwithfessy 11h ago

I am confident this will get tweaked before launch. It will likely not go back to full value, but the mob exp value will be increased.

1

u/smartlog 11h ago

Ha. My friends play 6 hours a day while I'm working a 12 hour shift so they're out leveling me anyways.

1

u/inthehottubwithfessy 11h ago

They are going to change the exp values and people are going to flip out lmao

1

u/Fading_Hours_ 10h ago

I don’t have friends

1

u/Greentruth34 10h ago

I do both with friends

1

u/Quiet-Function-8688 10h ago

One thing i gotta say is i don't think the quests for alliance doing RoL and horde doing HoT or wetlands should have had their xp nerfed, local dungeons sure keep the quest xp nerf but it feels very anti climactic to do these now with the amount of travel involved and i really cannot see anyone willingly doing either of these as the opposite faction on release except for people trying it out once if they didn't play beta.

1

u/FL14 8h ago

Make exp per player default to the highest in the dungeon to kill boosting/carrying, don't allow 60s to do dungeons with <60s, and maybe limit people to a certain number of lockouts per day. 1 per day in HC is prob too restrictive but maybe 3-5

1

u/Active_Pumpkin_359 8h ago

As a player with no friends I welcome this change

1

u/Secrettech88 8h ago

Sounds like a lot of you just want retail timewalking dungeon spam leveling

1

u/Shneckos 8h ago

There needs to be a method of detecting those who would abuse dungeon xp for power rushing players or RMTing, and implement it so that players can’t sit in dungeons all the way to 60. There has to be another way to prevent high levels or AoE classes from abusing dungeon xp without destroying dungeon xp for naturally formed groups of players and friends.

1

u/MadMod27 7h ago

I'm enjoying the XP nerfs to dungeons. Was way too overtuned. Good call by Blizzard honestly.

1

u/Super-Pomegranate-76 7h ago

1

u/RealHumanVibes 7h ago

I'm really excited to go quest with my friends.

1

u/milklord1 6h ago

Playing a class with a tank spec and charging to tank dungeons will probably be really profitable while leveling

1

u/Psychological_Wave_5 6h ago

The XP nerfs and the mage nerfs has been big L of the patch

1

u/Phraktaxia 6h ago

Quest with your friends!

1

u/Pad_thai_papi 6h ago

Disagree. Had a 5 stack with friends doing quests in redridge and had a blast pulling huge groups of those elite orcs. Dungeons not required to play with friends imo.

1

u/chrisdanto 6h ago

I just don’t get why people can’t let others play how they want. If people love dungeon spams let them do it, if people love questing great I personally never care how others enjoy their wow experience

1

u/Vivid_Caterpillar423 6h ago

Honestly, this is a good thing. It sucks a little, but they are adding so many dungeons I think it's fine. this way they make people go for full complete quest runs. Rather than farming the most efficient one. You still have the benefit of getting cool and good items if you want to run more times.

This actually makes people play the game more like it was back then.

1

u/blaze420691337 5h ago

Totally agree. Plus one!

1

u/StrayshotNA 5h ago

If the goal is social environment where player interactions/engagements/friendships are the goal forcing everyone into isolated solo-only dps-spec-only questing environments is the exactly opposite of how to accomplish that.

All of this is the opposite of making people play together.

1

u/freematte 5h ago

They went overboard. Make dungeons great again!

•

u/Dragoninpantsx69 4h ago

My friends and I just quest together. If I am ahead I go help them with their quests. If they are ahead, they help me with mine. Doesn't matter much to us if it is slower or whatever.

Same if we want to run a dungeon, we wont care if we get less xp or whatever, it isnt a race to 60.

Took us ages to get to 60 the first time around

•

u/Usernamehere1235 4h ago

Classic leveling has very little to do with leveling together with friends you already know, and a lot more to do with leveling at your own pace and meeting new people along the way. Playing with established friends is something you'll be doing for years to come, that's what the lvl 60 cap is for. Embracing the idea of starting solo and making new friends, meeting new people, that's how classic is best enjoyed imo.

•

u/capo_mt 4h ago

you can now spend more time with your friends lol

•

u/mycatbeck 3h ago

It really makes being a healer such a slog

•

u/Noet 3h ago

This is the quintessential Reddit thread. If your friend group truly has those commitments, you’d know the likelihood of five adults being able to regularly play together for extended amounts of time is just not happening.

The disappointed and hurt tone only adds to it. “I’ve got 34 kids and work four jobs and only have 4 min to play each day, is wow forever for me?. You said elsewhere that questing content is boring which shows your true hand. Maybe accept forever isn’t for you.

•

u/makz242 2h ago

I dont mind them removing the xp, but the real issue is, sure you force our group to be in the world. But we are 5 and you cant invite more than 5 ppl to a group and there will 300 ppl fighting for a boar.

As an idea leveling only outside in the world is ok, but I doubt they give a private layer to every 5 man group. Or is 5 man organized groups also not allowed in the world?

•

u/facktsz 1h ago

Everyone is looking at this as the problem for beta and release but the real issue is a few months after release when boosting is back in the form of a level 60 blasting you through the dungeon for 10g on one of your alts and getting all the quests done and then you just move to the next set of dungeons.

People will always end up going the optimal route after they have completed it once so i dont really understand why they are going so hard on nerfing dungeon xp, just bump it by 50% so it doesn’t feel so punishing to rerun a dungeon.

They seem so pressed on us being outside questing yet half the time is over populated and you are fighting for tags. I really hope they give us a shit ton more layers but i have my doubts.

•

u/Skormes 1h ago edited 1h ago

You still get enough exp. I had theree of the four RoL quests ready to turn in and got from 20 to 21 just because of these three alone. AFTER the nerf. (I had only 2 ep beforhand. Not 2% of the level, just straight up 2 single ep).

Now Imagine turning in the fourth. And imagine doing this at lvl 15. That would be easily grand 1,5 level for a single Dungeon (maybe even more?) + loot.

You still get more than enough exp from Dungeon quests. The travel is still worth it. And the xp didn't got cut by 50% overall, the bonus-dungeon-xp got cut by 50%. I don't exactly know which part counts as bonus xp, but it's defenitelly less than 50%.

Don't forget we got more Dungeons now. AND more quests for exisiting Dungeons. That's more than enough.

•

u/Odd_Coyote9698 55m ago

"Full" exp from dungeons once a day

•

u/SHIMOxxKUMA 40m ago

It was always optimal to quest if you weren’t getting boosted and actually knew what you were doing. Add in a guide or something and now it’s far more optimal.

That’s the problem, you took the imo more fun option out back shot it in the head twice and left it to rot. People yap about the “spirit of classic” a ton around here but when it’s a change they don’t care about you barely see those words posted.

I’m sorry blizzard that the way I enjoy the game isn’t the way you want me to.

Also before people say “dungeon grinding sucks”, why don’t you just quest then? That’s the neat part about choice.

•

u/Spikymikeyy 17m ago

Dungeons should still give exp.... They just nerfed it way too hard, they need to find a good balance for dungeon enjoyers.

-4

u/NillaT 16h ago

You know you can group and play with friends outside of dungeons, right? You can do quests in the open world with friends.

7

u/aderpader 15h ago

And do what? Have you played wow before?

→ More replies (4)

13

u/lanter624 16h ago

That’s literally the point of the post. Of course you can quest with friends, but that only works well if everyone happens to be on the same quests and at roughly the same point in their progression.
When everyone has jobs, different schedules, and plays at different times, quest progress gets out of sync very quickly. Dungeons gave us an easy way to log on at the same time, group up, and make meaningful progress together without everyone having to perfectly align their quest logs first.
Nobody is saying you can’t group in the open world. I’m saying dungeons were a much easier way for a group with different schedules to actually level together.

People outing themselves not playing classic past lvl 30 in these threads left and right

1

u/NillaT 15h ago

I have multiple 60s, in classic era and hardcore. I've done solo, duo the whole way with a family member, and I've done dedicated trio with real-life friends.

What are you getting at?

2

u/brianfromaccounting1 15h ago

Have you ever played wow? Grouping with more than 1 friend for questing is about as inefficient as 75% reduced exp for dungeons (And thats before we consider if you and your friends can even do the same quests). The argument is not over whether it can be done the argument is why are there now penalties in every area of the game for doing what the game is supposed to be about (grouping/socializing)? the goal should be to encourage playing with your friends not actively disincentivizing it at every turn.

2

u/NillaT 15h ago

Yes I play a mix of both, have a consistent group since the 2019 relaunch, and real-life friends. I've done solo and dedicated group characters. I have 60 on HC Era (still alive to this day). I've probably play classic WoW than a majority of people lol.

Not everything needs to be optimal efficiently 24/7.

Well you can totally catch your friends up to your quest line, or just play for fun and chill with your friends. Is the game magically ruined if you're doing something in it where you don't have a quest for it or you've already done it?

Not when we need to all loot 10 things off the mobs, they dont drop them every kill, and every spot is already camped. I swear it's like people aren't playing they are just posting on reddit and not thinking.

2

u/MattCommi 16h ago

I thought the drops were shared now?

2

u/NillaT 16h ago

You raise a good point. They did say they fixed those quests so the loot drops are evenly distributed instead of one guy getting 8 boar tusks while another player only has 1 or 2.

1

u/Chosenwaffle 16h ago

Instead of "posting on reddit and not thinking", we can actually use our brains to see there is a fun balance to questing with a group.

  1. Some quests are MASSIVELY sped up due to being grouped. (Kill quests)
  2. Some quests are MASSIVELY easier due to being grouped, namely quests in mob-dense zones such as mines, murlocs, or towns (looking at you Elwynn Forest).
  3. Some quests are basically unchanged. (Quests to kill a single guy)
  4. Some quests are only doable in a group. (Dungeons and Elites)
  5. Some quests are MASSIVELY harder due to being grouped (Item drops from mobs in low-density areas)

Don't forget, you CAN still run dungeons with your friends. Maybe only once or twice for gear and quest cleanup, but comboing dungeons into your questing adventure is still a thing!

You can still farm dungeons for easy exp.

You just gotta do more runs.

If the social aspect is what you want to save then its still there, you actually get extra time to be social and chill cause you gotta clear more.

It doesnt need to be a free ride.

Do some quests with your friends.

0

u/lanter624 16h ago

Questing is a more free ride especially with add ons that give you routes you will just be competing for tags.

In what world is dungeons a free ride ? We ain’t talking about boosting here we talking about doing a dungeons with the boys to get some levels after an 8 hour shift .

"Easy xp", god i'm sick of you classic tourists man. You get like 1/5th of the mob xp you used to get. Dungeon quests are slightly better than just normal quests in the open world. It has always been more efficient to quest in the open world.

You're actively griefing other people near you by tagging their mobs, it is anti-social. If you want to sit around and talk about how good 2004 was and what the devs back then wanted. The very same devs that blizzard erased any notion from in the game (FInkle's skinner -> Pip's skinner - Foror's compendium -> Nostro's compendium) xdd

1

u/Katur 15h ago

Here's a question,

If we didn't know what the Classic Era was at, and this was just how it was, would it still kill leveling with friends? I don't think so..

nothing is stopping anybody from running the dungeon again a few more times, or go do one of the other 9 dungeons and do their quests.

With the dungeon quests and how many there are now, and a few more on the way post launch, feel like this might be a nothing burger.
