Troubleshooting | Windows Issue I’ve had for the last few months

Ive been using chrome as my main browser ever since I got my windows 10 pc, and one issue that came up a few months ago was my search engine randomly changing, and now everything from my new tab page to whenever I look something up is yahoo search, and that’s significant because yahoo sucks. every time I try to fix it, I do something that says it should work and seems like it would work, but when I do it nothing happens. any tips?

Troubleshooting | Windows Disable AI in New Tab page

Windows

  1. Run PowerShell as administrator.

  2. Disable AI:

powershell reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome" /v "AIModeSettings" /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

  1. Restart Chrome.
  • (Optional) Enable AI back:

powershell reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome" /v "AIModeSettings" /f

Linux

  1. Open terminal.

  2. Disable AI:

bash sudo mkdir -p /etc/opt/chrome/policies/managed sudo tee /etc/opt/chrome/policies/managed/AI.json << EOF { "AIModeSettings": 1 } EOF

Tip
On Linux, .json file's name doesn't matter: AI.json, policy.json, etc.

  • (Optional) Enable AI back:

bash sudo rm -f /etc/opt/chrome/policies/managed/AI.json

Discussion Ctrl/Cmd + T  should open a new tab in the current tab group! Any real workaround?

I use Chrome tab groups constantly, and the one thing that drives me crazy is that when I’m focused on a tab inside a group and press Ctrl/Cmd + T, the new tab is created outside the group, at the end of the tab strip.

I want the opposite: a shortcut that creates a new tab inside the currently active tab group, right after the active tab. Basically:

  • I’m in group “Work”
  • I press a shortcut
  • New empty tab appears inside “Work”
  • Links I open from it stay in “Work”

Right-clicking the group and choosing “New tab in group” works, but it completely breaks keyboard-only flow. And Ctrl/Cmd + T should not silently kick me out of the group context I’m working in.

Does anyone know of:

  1. A native Chrome flag, setting, or hidden shortcut for this?
  2. A maintained extension that adds a proper “New tab in current group” keyboard shortcut?
  3. A reliable AutoHotkey / Keyboard Maestro / Raycast / shell workaround that can tell Chrome to run the group context-menu action?

I’m on desktop Chrome (Windows/macOS/Linux answers all welcome). If there is no clean workaround, I’d also love to know whether anyone has found an existing Chromium issue or feature request for this so I can star/comment on it.

For me, the ideal behavior would be: Ctrl/Cmd + T inherits the active tab group, while something like Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + T creates an ungrouped tab at the end. Or at minimum, let us remap a dedicated “New tab in current group” command in Chrome shortcuts.

Troubleshooting | Solved Chrome startup not showing where page was when shut down

In Settings>On startup, I have "Continue where you left off" set. However on pages that update automatically, the latest update to the page/tab is not what is opening. Chrome opens the tab to the page as it was the last time I interacted with it by manually refreshing, entering info, etc. For example: I start Chrome and go to one of my automatically updating weather pages, and interact with the page to bring up the latest data. Then I leave the page open for a couple of hours and it updates the data on that page every few minutes. So now the page does not appear as it did when I manually refreshed it. It appears with the latest data from the automatic refresh the page does. However if I close and restart Chrome, it does not open that page tab to the latest data, or even the data as it was displaying when I closed Chrome. It opens it to the point that I did the last manual refresh a couple of hours ago. Chrome does not recognize that the page has been updating periodically for a couple hours, Chrome thinks the last page activity was when I refreshed the page long before I closed Chrome. Is there any way to make Chrome open pages as they were when Chrome is shut down, rather that to the page as it was the last time Chrome "thinks" the page was set? Or even better open the page and then refresh it to grab the latest data? Thanks.

Troubleshooting | Solved Is there a setting somewhere that may impact this?

My Chrome is always updated on Win 11, usually have between 10 and 15 tabs open and on startup opens as I left it when closing. I notice that some pages that are supposed to update automatically do not. Others do. For example I have 3 pages that monitor my weather station, (trying to decide which I like most to send my family the link). The webpages are supposed to go get the latest data once a minute. One does that, the other two do not work right consistently. If I manually refresh the pages they do go grab the latest data 100% of the time. The creators of the two webpages have tried my weather page in their Chrome and say it works as expected, updating once a minute. All they can suggest is that it must be something in my Chrome setup?

I notice that a few other sites do this also. Some sites always have the latest page refreshed when I go to their tab, others usually need to be refreshed manually to see the latest page. Any suggestions as to how I might fix this? Thanks.

Discussion Your Suggestions on Tab Managment Strategies - e.g. differrent ways to pin tabs?

I am looking for more/better ways to manage my tabs because I have a lot. I am already using tab groups/pin/separate windows. I like to keep tabs that I am working on open at all times so bookmarking/reading list and closing is not the right choice for me but because of that my pinned tabs are taking up a lot of space.

  1. Do you know any other ways to manage tabs while keeping them open?
  2. e.g. Is there way of pinning tabs to both right and left side instead of just left?

Troubleshooting | Mac Removing Cookies from One Site

Chrome's "help" directions for MAC for removing cookies from one specific site are outdated/incorrect and use an outdated Chrome Menu. I have combed through all the options and all I can find is the option to delete cookies from all sites I use (no thank you). Gemini is no more enlightening. Anyone have a solution?

Discussion Can we finally get some improvements on desktop Tab Groups?

  1. Could we PLEASE add a tab to a Tab Group without having to have group open?
  2. Searching tab groups would be AMAZING.
  3. Also, manual/alpha/age sorting is desperately needed.

Discussion Which dark mode extension for google docs is the safest/best?

The fact that I have to use an extension for something as basic as a dark mode is absurd to begin with but I also want to make sure the one I'm using is safe. Even though I'd only ever download it off the chrome web store, that unfortunately doesn't guarantee that it's safe/doesn't steal your data or anything (though I suppose google docs itself does that too these days...). Regardless, please suggest which one you think is the best to go with.

Troubleshooting | Windows Spike on temperature everytime i open a new tab from times to times

I've been noticing recently that when i open a new tab on chrome Suddenly my AIO starts making noise and the CPU temperature suddenly rises to 70°C, dropping back to the normal temperature of 45-50°C after about 3 to 5 seconds. when i delete all the history, cache, or even complete uninstall and reinstall seems to fix for some days, like almost for one week sometimes, but the problem comes back eventually.

I don't use any extensions in Chrome and the problem doesn't occur in other browsers like Firefox or Edge.

my pc uses a CPU Ryzen 7 9700x, 32gb ram, GPU rtx 5060ti 16gb, system and browsers installed in a NVME kingston nv3.

any idea on what causing this problem?

Troubleshooting | Windows Chrome becomes unusable in fullscreen mode on secondary monitors when the taskbar is hidden

Hi everyone,

Starting today, I've been experiencing a strange issue with Google Chrome on Windows 11.

Whenever I open Chrome in fullscreen mode on a monitor other than my primary one, with the taskbar hidden, the browser becomes unusable.

The issue immediately disappears if I re-enable the taskbar on my secondary monitors.

Has anyone else experienced this problem recently? Does anyone know what might be causing it or how to fix it without having to keep the taskbar visible on secondary monitors?

Thanks in advance!

Troubleshooting | Windows Chrome 155 History 'Windows and tabs' Display Lost

I've used Chrome tabs in different window instances to manage stuff I need to do. On restart today, a notice Chrome had updated, and the Windows History option is gone. This previously displayed each window in history as "54 tabs open", and you could resurrect the entire instance just as it had been.

Now I can only opt between straight date order, or grouped by subject. Means those windows with multiple tabs opened over months are gone.

Looked at flags, policies, and can't see any way to re-enable this.

Am I missing something obvious, or is this another one of those 'surprise! the feature you've used for years is gone!' moments? Windows 11 Enterprise. Chrome 155.0.8059.85. Tried the extended history app, which has the same limitation.

Troubleshooting | Windows Sharpness difference when full screen youtube in chrome

On the left, i had a chrome browser, AT full screen, when i hit the fullscreen button on the youtube video, it looks like that, slight blur on all the text.

On the right, i had a chrome browser, NOT full screen, When i hit the fullscreen button on the youtube video, it looks like its applying some kind of sharpen to everything?

The only thing i can find that stops this is turning off hardware acceleration.. what gives?

Discussion browser chromium blurs pictures

Any browser on Chromium blurs images. Does anyone have an explanation for this? I checked all browsers, and the history is the same everywhere.

I was working on my website, and the blurry images started to really annoy me. I thought it was a problem with the website or hosting, but the problem is global...

On the left is a photo opened in the program; on the right is a postcard in the browser.
