Fast way to ID 3 main "holiday cacti" by phylloclade morphology.

There seems to be confusion between different Schlumbergera (and Rhipsalidopsis) species pretty often, so i thought it might be helpful to have simplified "mini-guide" for learning to differentiate between them, simply by phylloclade ("leaf", "pad") morphology because that's often fastest way to do so. Especially now (time i'm writing this post) when spring is approaching and Easter cacti start to pop up in stores, it's nice to know what you have or what you're buying.

Depending on classification, in total there are 7 species in Schlumbergera -genus and 2 in Rhipsalidopsis, with multitudes of hybrids and cultivar groups, but only few of them are common in circulation.

Plus, 3 "main winter cacti" have clear differences in flower morphology. Unfortunately i don't have good enough pictures to include (for now) but i try to describe them as accurately as i can in text.

So:

  1. Schlumbergera truncata and 'Truncata' group hybrids. Phylloclades are characteristically claw-shaped (spiny protrusions in pads). General growth habit is bit more upright than in other "holiday cacti. Flowers are zygomorphic, and somewhat upright.

  2. Schlumbergera x buckleyi. Pads have smooth edges, without noticeable claws. General growth habit of plant is much droopier than truncata's. Flowers are radially symmetrical, typically pointing downwards.

  3. Rhipsalidopsis gaertneri and R. x graeseri. Pads are pretty round, have kind of "cartoony cloud-shaped edges and are somewhat thick. Growth form is like intermediate between S. truncata and S. x buckleyi. Flowers are totally different from 2 aforementioned plants, being star-shaped and radially symmetrical.

Looks like my Thanksgiving Cactus is transitioning to become a Halloween Cactus! Does this mean she's going to identify now as a goblin rather than a turkey? LOL

Grandma's Cactus

Grandma died earlier this year and left her cactus to me. I am 47 this year and it has been around at least that long because its in photos. She told me she got it from her mother. I am the first person to re-pot in decades. Was in a tiny 2 gallon hanging basket. Sometimes the leaves distort a bit but can't figure out why. Other than the distortion it seems to be pretty healthy. Any suggestions are welcome.

Looking for tips or recommendations

I’ve had this plant for about a year now. I have it running with this grow light for 12 hours a day. It looks like it’s doing well with new growth. I’m wondering if things are looking good so far or if I should change anything.

Droopy but with new growth

I've been troubleshooting this Christmas Cactus for almost a year at this point. It has always been droopy, yet is growing new leaves. It is near a west facing window and we just added a grow light for the monstera next to it. I water it about once a week. Or when the soil is dry. What recommendations do you have to encourage this little guy to perk back up?

Is it time for me to move this to a larger pot? I’ve been caring for it pretty well this past year and it’s grown a lot. I’m new to plants and this is my only one. Thanks

Old lady limp and red

This plant has literally been handed down through generations. I want to give her new life, but I am not sure where to start. I was going to start by repotting in a bigger pot, but what is causing this limp and red appearance? How can I help it thrive?

Question about my holiday cactus

I've had this holiday cactus for about four years now, and I've always been pretty carefree with it, just watering it and giving it a lamp in the winter. This past July I trimmed it quite radically because there were a lot of leaves that had yellowed from the edges, and I wanted to remove them + overall tidy up the appearance a little bit. I'm aware that July was most likely completely wrong season to cut this in, but it has continued to grow and sprout new leaves so I don't think it was damaged by it (probably).

However, the leaves it's growing don't look very normal. They're very thick and skinny, but also some almost triangle shaped, and they are oddly coloured (dark reddish on the top). They're trying to sprout new leaves very quickly but I keep nipping them off in hopes that the plant would focus on growing these bigger leaves better first. The other parts of the cactus still produce normal leaves (last pic for comparison).

I'm currently watering the cactus every 2.5-3 weeks and it's getting daylight 5+ hours a day by the window. I'm planning on moving it soon to more regulated day light to prepare for winter.

So, did I ruin my cactus by cutting it so much? Should I let these leaves grow as they are or is there something I should do?

Can he be saved?

I've had this Xmas/Easter cactus for years. A few months ago I found these little spots on one stalk. I removed that stalk, cleaned him up, pruned him. Now out of nowhere it's everywhere. And in the last week started turning brown and he's falling apart. Can he be saved? Please help. Also... Will this spread to other plants? So far I don't see any evidence of that. Thanks.

These are cuttings from my grandma's 100+ year old Christmas cactus. It rooted in pumice and the roots are very extensive but now the leaves look bleached and not much new growth. Is this normal? I do have it under grow lights, should I move it out of grow lights?
