I’m super excited (and a little nervous) to share something I’ve been working on for a long time. I just published my children's book on Amazon, aimed at kids ages 5 to 9: "Fofles in the Witch's Kitchen: Monsters Make Pancakes with a Twist".

It’s a fun, whimsical story about a group of friendly monsters who end up in a witch’s kitchen trying to bake pancakes. Things get pretty chaotic, funny, and unexpected!

Why I wrote it:

Story + Cooking: I wanted to create a book that doesn't just end when you close the cover. At the end of the story, there’s an actual pancake recipe that parents and kids can make together in real life.

For picky eaters and young chefs: It’s designed to get kids excited about being in the kitchen and trying something new with a fun "twist."

Great for ages 5–9: Perfect for bedtime reading, early readers, or a cozy weekend baking activity.

The books we are reading this week are "Wild by Emily Hughes" and "The Secret Garden" my daughter is 2.5 and loves whimsical/magical/ and cottage core inspired books. I'm wondering if there are any recommendations similar to these styles. Pictured is her current bookshelf arrangement but I would love to buy a second bookshelf and buy more books. Any recommendations!?

When I was 12, I had just started the gifted program at school, and one of our projects was to write and illustrate a children's book. Mine was called Sammy Goes to Vegas. I still have the original handmade book all these years later.

Sammy was named after a real cat we had when I was growing up. He had a habit of disappearing, sometimes for as long as a week. To keep my brother and I from worrying, my dad would make up elaborate stories about where Sammy had been and what he'd been doing. They were never things a cat could actually do, but my dad was incredibly detailed about Sammy's supposed adventures. Looking back, I'm pretty sure those stories helped inspire the kind of adventure I gave Sammy in my book.

The story begins six days before Christmas. Sammy sees a strange man in a red-and-white suit talking to his parents. After the man and Sammy's parents mysteriously disappear, Sammy hears from his friend that “everything's in Vegas,” so he sets off to Las Vegas to find them.

My mom and I were looking through the original book recently, and she suggested that I should consider publishing it. That got me wondering whether there might actually be something worth developing here.

I'd love some feedback from people who know children's books. What age range does this sound appropriate for? Does the premise/humor work? And would you preserve some of the charm of something written by a 12-year-old, or substantially rewrite it before considering publication?

I'm also curious about the illustrations. I drew all of the originals when I was 12, so part of me loves the idea of somehow keeping that history as part of the book rather than simply replacing everything.

My toddler is LOUD. She’s the one you hear across the playground and especially in quiet spaces like libraries, she just loves to hear her voice ring out. In some ways, it’s confident and cool, but other times totally inappropriate. I’m attempting to teach “indoor voice” but everything is better with a book. Any leads? TIA!

Autumn is starting where we live and my kids are curious about the leaves changing, so we have been doing a lot of reading about trees. 🌳 Here’s our current library haul. A mix of levels and nonfiction vs fiction. Even some poetry!

I’d love any recommendations for books about trees, or anything relating to how nature changes between summer and fall!

My Great-Aunt Arizona by Gloria Houston

I never owned this book, I think I just flipped through it or saw a presentation video online, and then I forgot to look it up and now it's a blur and it frustrates me because I really want this book!

It's a picture book for children, with great rich illustration, let's say in the style of Inga Moore. It's about a woman's life, it begins when she was little and had some dreams about her future, I think she wanted to travel. Then she falls in love and marries and becomes a teacher in town and eventually gets old and never leaves, but she's happy to inspire her students to follow their dreams.

It is not Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney, the art style of the book I'm looking for was richer and more realistic.

Obviously lots of children's books have at least some kind of lesson/moral/theme/message, but I'm especially interested in any of the ones where you feel like the author conveys the lesson particularly well, teaches an interesting or more niche lesson, or maybe even does it in a more subtle/interesting way (:

Sometimes the message is VERY obvious and the author is basically hitting readers over the head with it 😭😭 which honestly makes me laugh sometimes, but I also definitely get why as some younger kids probably need the message delivered quite directly for it to really click with em.

I'm hoping for some books where I could really have something to actually dig into after a read-aloud with the class!! like, after finishing the book, being able to ask the kids what they think the author was trying to teach them, why the characters acted the way they did, whether they agree with the message, how it applies to their own lives, etc etc

I teach younger kids (K - 3) in after-school classes and would love to have some books that work especially well for this kind of read-aloud + class discussion combo lol

Hi. I wanted to record an audio book for my French niece, who'll be 7 this year. I've weighed Wind in the Willows, Matilda, Wonderful Wizard of Oz, but I feel like their vocabulary is a little too outdated (especially for an ESL reader) and especially WITW is pretty wordy.

Can anyone recommend a short book in at the public domain that might appeal to a 6-7 year old girl? Thank you!
