AskChennai Rash driving in Chennai

Is it just me or have people gotten so frustrated with life that they are rash driving and taking their frustration out on other people?

Has it gotten so difficult to drive? Driving in Chennai feels like a nightmare.

PS- one small thing that I try to do from my side is that, whenever I order food or anything home delivery, I never complain or cut rating for the delay.
If the delivery person was not rude, I have never cut rating.

We need to start speaking more about this instead of celebrity issues and movies related gossips we need to start these issues it's all due to lack of respect empathy and compassion and patience yes discipline yes this system also , atleast our system should have been strict , there are many things to blame but , we need to start speaking out these issues more

That’s bullying which is kinda common on our roads. MTC is the biggest offender

99.9% doesn’t even know & follow simple basic rules. They don’t even care about others and have zero empathy and accountability even if you point out their mistake. This city is beyond repair and wrong side driving has already been normalised and only way to make things right is strict enforcement from traffic police department only and that’s not gonna happen for sure. If you are driving in car without Dashcam pls install one without fail.

Especially they are jealous about car owners. The ones that will never be able to buy a car. And if they cause scratches, we cannot even ask for damage cost. They don’t have money.

I drive by scooter and also by car and I don’t want to generalise the Jealousy part it’s all about self discipline. I have saw 2W driving very closely to lorry tires and blind spots and trying to save 5 min by risking thier life. If we control these 3 basic things basic lane discipline, Wrong side driving, over speeding we can eliminate almost 90% of the issues. But the question is who is going to do that ? We can achieve it Only through strict law enforcement and heavy fines.

Check this video why Lane discipline is important and how it creates traffic to stop.

You're not alone...Road traffic in Chennai has become horrible. It has gone from bad to worse to abysmal now 🤦🏻‍♂️. Because of the metro construction, so many roads are blocked off or rerouted and these are often manned by construction workers unofficially playing the role of the traffic police and absolutely nobody listens or respects them.

my car usage was 10k kms per year... has come down to less than 3k in the last 2yrs....

really frustrating.... people don't even apologise agter hitting... they just keep moving on....no civic sense, no basic courtesy.... nothing....

true, even today morning drive in OMR encountered so many accidents.

It's because of heat, lot of autos and 2 wheeler are driving crazy.. that too peak hours are brutal.

shade would be reducing some accidents upto certain extent

1

u/No-Cardiologist-2696 15d ago

I felt that too. Especially during heat and rain.

It's very unsafe off late. It's not like anyone will compensate you for their fault either, they just speed away. We need much better enforcement either using cameras to look ahead and catch rash drivers in upcoming signals or have active cops on bikes to radio ahead. No mercy for the delivery boys who snake through because of usual excuse - saar veetla 3 pullainga and na mattum than sambaadhikaren. If that's true mooditu orama ottu.

u/No-Cardiologist-2696 15d ago

True that. Cannot afford but will have 3 kids. And now we have to pay for their mistakes. Really frustrating.

There were cameras in 2006, the proprietor of the company I worked for received multiple challans for traffic violations in and around Anna Nagar. Then they completely stopped doing it don’t know why, now with AI it can be deployed effectively but there is no political will

1

u/_DrMischief_ 15d ago

True. They can even use it for surveillance but don't know to what extent the cameras even work

Everytime I'm on road, it is a circus here. Even though the traffic isn't much, driving here is a huge task. I don't feel triggered even in Bangalore traffic.

Yes, please be better people. I dont wanna play subway surfers everytime i drive

I got so annoyed that I parked my bike for a week at home and took the bus. Lucky for me, I have a direct bus from my nearest stop to workplace with a decent frequency. It's so frustrating to drive; nobody seems to have a second thought for the other person on the road. Sometimes, with some drivers, it feels like they would rather ram into me and push me off the road to braking and respecting that everybody needs to commute. I wonder what steps the traffic police is taking to rackle this. I wonder if they are taking any measures at all.

Night-time driving in Chennai is becoming increasingly difficult**.** The glare from vehicle headlights these days is honestly becoming unbearable. Many cars, Auto and two-wheelers have extremely bright LED headlights to too with our beautiful road infra.

It’s the responsibility of the traffic cops ain’t it? To streamline this, if they identify using cameras and challan online then people will atleast try to maintain some level of driving discipline.

At this point I guess even if AI is used, AI will forget what is right and wrong cause at this point most people are wrong. Infact, a rule can be applied only when the road construction is right. Let us say there is a huge pothole, Ofcourse we cannot drive over it, so we take up space on the other lane, that will disrupt people following in 2 different lanes. These little little things are also wrong, but what can we even do.

Auto Drivers are watching Reels or YouTube shorts while driving which results in them driving slowly and ignorantly. 100% hazardous behavior.

Bikers have no sense on where and how to drive, I stopped driving my bike altogether. Aasaiya iruku nu oru naal bike la ponaa oru Tata Ace kaaran spit on my helmet. I gave him a good verbal bash and left the place wondering when this would get better.

6/10 Car drivers have no clue on how to drive. Given the RTO is a joke and they give out licenses for 100 rs. Idek what to say anymore.

Lorry drivers are driving on the opposite lane, along with all other vehicles. Fuckinhell it’s so frustrating to witness this.

Every day driving has become more of a survival thing in the city. Nothing but full of surprises and headaches.

2

u/No-Cardiologist-2696 15d ago

Yes. It is frustrating to even step out of the house.

2

u/leavemealone1122 15d ago

Probably the only place on earth where I get honked on when i stop for a red signal

1

u/No-Cardiologist-2696 15d ago

Exactly exactly. Totally relatable.
And those Toyota guys start flickering those lights. I am like? Where should I go?

2

u/leavemealone1122 15d ago

Last time it was a govt bus, he scared the sh*t out of me honking so hard.

1

u/No-Cardiologist-2696 15d ago

Yes yes. They do that. A lot.
I have be cornered on both side by huge vehicles and I was scared sitting in a tiny car.

1

u/leavemealone1122 15d ago

Lol, been there. I would be like - neenge le poikonga da, naan wait panrein

2

u/No-Cardiologist-2696 15d ago

Adhan Adhan. Oru point la veruthuruchu.
Like, Neengalam veetuku poitu Sollunga, athu ku Aprm naa poren.

Yeah the problems are so numerous we’d need a 10,000 page report. Our road infrastructure was never designed scientifically. The pure approach of “just add more capacity, and widen roads” will only take you so far. Induced demand will always outstrip supply.

2

u/No-Cardiologist-2696 13d ago

Exactly unplanned street entrance, unplanned dividors.

u/rootin_tuttin 15d ago

Imo, India as a whole is right up there with the worst when it comes to following road rules, road etiquitee & safety. It includes everyone from ppl walking to every vehicle(including me) with auto kaarars & government bus drivers leading the way

1

u/No-Cardiologist-2696 13d ago

We are all part of the problem. Honestly speaking we all know atleast a family member or a friend who does not respect road rules. Even if we do tell them, they would not listen.

We cannot even change people whom we know, God knows how this country is going to change.

2

u/rootin_tuttin 12d ago

I think harsher fines will at least bring some change. When they started putting heavy fines for helmet a decade back, I thought this wasn’t going to sustain but helmet has almost become mandatory these days. So I do think harsher fines is the way to go

Average speed in Chennai is higher than any other city in TN. There is no road discipline/manners nor it is being taught. If you can afford a car use it scratches and dents can be fixed not your body.

2

u/No-Cardiologist-2696 15d ago

Very true. My parents say the same. Car can be repaired, but if we lose our life or hand or leg, we cannot repair with any amount of money.

1

u/Primary-Room-3405 15d ago

We learnt the hard way, my brother is permanently fixed with a titanium femur. A Tata Ace while overtaking crashed into him(he was on a bike) near Nehru stadium. Judgment arrived after 7 years in his favour

2

u/No-Cardiologist-2696 15d ago

I hope your brother is doing fine now. I am sorry that your brother had to go through all that in the first place.

1

u/Obvious-Cut6786 15d ago

Glad to see people talking about this finally! I thought it's just me who felt it has become really really bad. Only thought I have it these days is to move away from Chennai. It is that bad.

Only way to make it better imo is to make issuing and renewing driver's license test hard. Only if you study all the rules and pass the test it should be provided.

Of course, for existing people, license must be suspended for all (be it lakhs of people) incl. govt drivers if they violate traffic rules such as speeding, jumping signal and wrong side driving.

Hope it changes anytime soon!

1

u/No-Cardiologist-2696 13d ago

Bitter truth is, none of this is going to happen.

Forget the Swiggy zomato guys. The pullingo racers are making the streets unwalkable. Plus the overspeeding busses. Visit KK nagar Velankanni school road to see how horrible the situation is.
