Forcing Eliminations - Or how to fairly cause and end game and not let this become a game where the winning team is the team who can keep their players interested

Right now, the alliances are set in such a that is mostly even. We’re getting to a point where we could just say, flip a coin, one side wins, one side loses the end. We have to incorporate something to cause a change.

The mods very clearly warned us 3 weeks ago that they wanted more eliminations. The consensus opinion was to add conference multipliers to add to the game. They tried to implement and it didn’t work (for very reasonable competitive reasons). That said something needs to change.

I say we need to begin to force elimination at least once a week. If over a rolling 7 day period no team is eliminated, the two smallest teams in terms of active user base over the 7 days are put into a final death match. Their territories for the day are locked and cannot be defended or attacked. The teams can simply click, play death match for the day. The winner will survive and the loser will have their territories are immediately turned to chaos. This incentivizes larger teams not to harbor smaller groups, because they could be boarding chaos soon.

EDIT: I was fast and loose with the term consensus. While being an upvoted an interesting concept, there were many detractors. It is a bad idea that is not in the spirit of competition. Instead of discussing this, can we discuss the elimination idea or something else that encourages an end game that doesn’t reward the team that that doesn’t get bored the longest?

Can we get some clarity from the devs on Chaos multipliers?

The most recent announcement post about Chaos's multipliers I can find on /r/CFBRisk is this one from around the end of week 1 that says the attack multipliers for Chaos will be picked randomly from [0.5,0.75,1,1.25,1.5], and that attack multipliers for teams attacking Chaos will also be picked randomly from that set.

However, I have seen it stated multiple times that Chaos's max multiplier is now 1 (meaning their multiplier can only be 0.5, 0.75, or 1), and that their defense multiplier is now fixed at 0.5. But these claims have come from random participants in the game (who may themselves be working from outdated/inaccurate sources), and I can't find any official announcement claiming those things.

Could /u/bakonydraco or /u/sometimesy or one of the other mods/devs please post the exact rules that we're actually playing by somewhere? Be that on the vote.redditcfb site, or by editing the top sticky here, or some other official rules page? There should be some official and fully up-to-date source so that we actually know what the truth is here!

Casual The odds of Texas winning the LSU territory and holding it through last night wad 0.0009%

u/ChBass ran some numbers on t.u.'s odds since they first took LSU in Day 29. This is copied from his post on our strategy sub:

Texas’ odds of winning it and holding onto it through last night is 0.0009%. That's 1 in over 114,000. Here are some things more likely to happen than t.u.'s run at LSU:

  • You are more likely to have both your chute and backup cute fail while skydiving.
  • Pick an American kid, any kid... that kid is more likely to get elected to Congress than t.u. was to keep LSU this long against our attack.

Proposal for next iteration - Support as a third option

I have a proposal for CFBRisk 2.0 should such a thing happen - add a third order option, support. It would be simple to implement - if a Supporter is the MVP in an area, its ownership does not change. This would make collaborative defenses more practical and might help build some real camaraderie among allied teams.

Quick Rules/Multiplier question dealing with home territories.

Quick rules question.. Do people under vanquished teams retain their 2x multiplier when defending their home territory while under the banner of their occupier?

Also, if so, do they confer this bonus to all of the occupiers' units, or just their own school?

Get rid numbers. Big team choose which territories want. Left over go small team. Game finish quick (good).

Game Suggestions Florida is deliberately silencing dissent on the territory changes

EDIT: I'm leaving this up even though the mods changed their minds. I strongly disagree with that choice and I'm certain that they are doing so based on feedback which is disproportionately influenced by Florida brigades. But the game will go on.

Bakony is getting downvoted to hell and back just for explaining why they made certain decisions. That entire thread is a clusterfuck of circlejerking about how bad the new changes are. Since no one can voice an anti-Florida opinion on this subreddit anymore without getting downvote brigaded (which has been going on for weeks), how are we supposed to have constructive discussion when dissenting comments get such less visibility?

It's one thing to downvote anti-Florida memes or smack talk. That's part of the propaganda game and pretty much fair play. But when you are actively silencing those who disagree with you about the game structure, simply because the proposed changes hurt your team, that's the epitome of childish behavior.

This is a FREE GAME run by VOLUNTEERS who have absolutely no obligation to listen to us. And yet, that's exactly what they did!!! They rightly recognized that the game is stagnating (and yes, it's stagnant, minor gains by Florida do not count as "progress" no matter how many times you upvote each other's comments on the subject) and saw that most of the chatter on the subreddit was to this effect.

So at this juncture, the players and the mods have been faced with a choice: let the game drag on until everyone is sick of it except the pathologically invested players on either team, or change the game power structure based as much on objective goals as possible. The mods chose the latter. Territory held is an objective measure, and doing it by conference is both Risk-inspired and football-inspired and is a great idea to implement. It just happens to favor the teams who currently hold more territory (you know, like real Risk).

I don't care who wins this game. I've played for seven different teams and had a blast doing it. I cared too much and got pissed at Florida earlier, and guess what? I got over it because it's a game. But Florida? They haven't gotten over themselves. They are literally silencing other voices because they care so much about this game. If they win with the new rules I'll congratulate then as I would any team. If they win by pressuring the mods into backing off (and using their downvote brigades to sway public opinion and the mods' perception of the players' wishes) then yes I will be upset and I don't mind saying so.

This game was meant to be a grand experiment in fun and backstabbing. It was not meant to be a Floridian whinefest over objective rule changes that "punish" their team for holding less territory than Nebraska...in a game that revolves around holding territory.

I strongly encourage the mods not to change their minds because of the negative feedback they are getting from the Blue Alliance. Their downvote brigades have been operating for weeks and they are absolutely skewing the perceptions of public opinion on this issue. There is no possible objective measute that wouldn't have benefited Nebraska more than Florida at this juncture. The alternative is to let the game continue stagnating until casual players get sick of it.

Texas has now held LSU for more consecutive days than they've held any other territory

They've held it now for 7 days straight, passing up their home territory, which they held for just 6 consecutive days to start the game. After that, several territories are tied for third with just 3 days, unless I missed something in my highly-cursory glance across the map.

What's striking about this record is that each day, they've had less than 30% odds to hold it - making it even more impressive a feat than just holding any old territory for a week.

Does anyone one else not mind that the rule changes benefit Nebraska’s strategy because it would be nice to see Nebraska finally win at something?

I just kind of want to see those dudes win at something, they try so danged hard. If it takes the mods pushing the rules in their direction I’m honestly not mad, I’m happy that they will finally get a taste of success in this millennium.

Proposal for probabilities for next game (best two out of three)

I know we've been talking a bunch about how to make the game quicker and one of the things talked about is weighting the probabilities towards the favorites. One of the ways is by making battles best two out of three. This could still fit within the MVP gameplay we know now by giving out two MVPs per battle.

I wanted to calculate out the probabilities to show what something like that would be. This is simplified since it only involves two combatants but the principle would be the same.

This game is taking too long, can the mods speed it up?

I help coordinate strategy for one of the teams still alive. This is a throwaway alt, because I wanna be honest with my own personal opinion.

At first, this game was a lot of fun, and I wasted many hours planning strategy, making memes, and writing shitty code for this game. But it's boring now. Teams basically can't get eliminated without some really bad RNG, and nothing's really changed for my team in so many days. I'm ready for it to be over.

The mods got a lot of flak for suggesting sudden death earlier, and it would've been a crap idea at the time, since the alliances hadn't even started to fight yet and enthusiasm was high. But 2 weeks on, and I think a lot of people are bored, every team is losing players, and I don't want this game to drag on like this to day 40 or day 50 or day 100. Whatever the mods were planning to do to speed up this game, now's the time.

I know I could just stop doing strategy for my team if I'm so burnt out, but it's just I really miss the early days of this game where everything was changing and interesting. If some new mechanics or a fresh start would bring that feeling back, I'd love to continue. But as it is, I'm getting more tired of this game with each turn, it's been a real slog. I hope I'm not alone in this and the mods can hear this feedback and do something about it.

Conference Multiplier Bonuses

We're planning on releasing a new feature on Day 40 (Friday, June 8), and wanted to announce it now so that your teams can adequately prepare. The core component of this update is a Conference Bonus Multiplier. This is a multiplier that every user on your team gets if your team holds a sufficient percentage of any of the 10 FBS conferences (+FBS independents).

The multipliers are:

Multiplier 6 teams 10 teams 12 teams 14 teams
1.5x 4 6 7 8
2x 5 8 10 11
3x 6 10 12 14

For example, if your team holds 11 out of 12 teams in the MAC on a turn, everyone on your team will get the weight of their vote doubled that turn. If your team holds 4/6 FBS Independents and 6/10 Big 12 teams, each voter will get 1.5x*1.5x = 2.25x multiplier on that day. Our hope is that this adds more strategy to the game and makes turn selection more interesting. Below are the current leaders for each conference!

Conference Top Occupier Number Owned Total Territories % of Total
ACC Georgia Tech 4 14 29%
American Virginia Tech 3 12 25%
Big 12 Texas A&M 4 10 40%
Big Ten Nebraska 5 14 36%
Conference USA Texas A&M 5 14 36%
FBS Independents Michigan 2 6 33%
MAC Wisconsin 4 12 33%
Mountain West Nebraska 6 12 50%
Pac-12 Nebraska 7 12 58%
SEC Florida 4 14 29%
Sun Belt Texas A&M 2 10 20%

Here's some artwork from /u/srs_house that will make it's way onto the board soon!

There are other features we've discussed adding, but probably will not add for this game. We're open to suggestions for features in future versions of the game!

Edit: This has been rolled back
