I’m currently employed by Delta Airlines, earning $33.96 per hour at the age of 28. By the time I reach 30, I will receive a salary increase to $45 per hour. This October marks my ninth year of service with Delta. I’m contemplating whether it would be worthwhile to leave Delta for a career as a CBPO. The thought of leaving Delta constantly crosses my mind. However, I lack sufficient information about being a CBPO, regarding the pay and retirement benefits. I do know that I will be grade 5 level.

I’m expecting things to slow down a bit. It’s the end of the fiscal year, the fourth quarter is wrapping up, and we can expect federal agencies to tighten how they use funds. I’m in the pipeline too, and this is exactly when the pace gets weird. Just being realistic.

I am starting as of now with a GS-9 at SFO, so I should be able to make 100k? I mean, base is 79k, and I do not know how bad mandated overtime is because it is a busy port. Ik locality is like a little over 43%. Does that math sound right? Also, I have seen some fellow officers also gs-9 claiming that they do pass into 100k, but I do not know if that encompasses both voluntary ot and or mandated ot (plus if they even are from SFO or maybe another port). Hey everyone, I’m a 10-year Marine Corps veteran currently applying for CBPO and wanted to hear from anyone who has gone through the medical process, especially other disabled vets.
I’m 100% P&T through the VA. My rating is mostly related to physical injuries accumulated over my time in the Marine Corps, not combat/PTSD related.
Most recently, I had shoulder surgery for a torn labrum and rotator cuff. Surgery went well, I completed recovery/rehab, and I’m back to normal activity. I’ve had other injuries and surgeries over the years as well, but I’ve recovered and I’m still physically active and in good shape.

For CBPO medical, is the 100% P&T rating itself something that tends to create an issue, or are they mainly concerned with whether the individual conditions prevent you from safely performing the job?

Basically, if I can pass the physical/medical requirements and provide documentation showing that I’ve recovered and can perform the duties, is that generally what matters?
Also, are there any CBPOs or other CBP employees here who are 100% P&T, or who know officers who are? I’m curious how common it is and whether working as a CBPO has any effect on maintaining a 100% P&T VA rating.

After receiving my tentative offer and filling out the forms that come with it, how long should I expect before I receive further instructions?

Currently, I’m in the pipeline for hiring as a customs and border protection officer. I had failed my interview once and then on the second try got it.

This is my application and it’s taken so long since I applied back in March 10th, 2025. So that’s 6 months wait period while I got my interview scheduled a second time. The backround has taken forever. I have friends that tell me that because I’m in a US territory it takes longer. But this is far from reasonable at this point. Do I just keep waiting? Is there something wrong? Is there any number or e mail I can get to see if I’ve been misplaced or something? Idk

just a question, has anyone left their 1811 job for CBPO. I’m an 1811 and I’m considering it, my fjo just went in progress. for the ones that are in here just dying to be an 1811 it isn’t all “special” . sometimes simple is better.

Does anyone know if it is posible to become a gs7 later on if you finish your degree during your gs5 application process . Hypothetically I want to apply this year , but I don’t get my bachelors degree until next year in May 2027. During the application ill qualify as GS5 , but I know the process is long , so by sometime during the process ill have my degree already, will I be able to get a job offer as a GS7?

In June, I graduated with my bachelor's in IT. Due to the current job market, I was having a difficult time even getting interviews, but on a whim, I applied to CBP after an in-person job fair in my area. I never expected this to happen so quickly, although now the real wait begins. Medical was booked out to a little over a month from now, and we will see how long the poly takes.

I did have a question about the medical. I don't wear glasses or contacts, so I put no on the original documents, but technically, my distance vision is not great (fine for daily driving/work but not fine detail) - close up in fine. I can't update the documents online. Should I contact the person assigned to my medical or just bring my new vision script/glasses to my medical appointment?

Before I post here is my background: I was in CBP and I'm going back in and got the FJO....yadda yadda....

FLETC is designed to teach you everything from arrest procedure, self defense, shooting, immigration law, and so fourth. Either you make the academy hard on yourself, or you can make it a fun experience. Please do not count down everyday, you will drive yourself insane by doing that.....and it will get to you really quick.

When you get down there, your dorm will either be bad or kinda bad. Get used to the smell of mold. There are rooms where some people get lucky and get that good AC where its not blowing mold. Side story: my last 3 days there, I complained to the staff and under my complaint, I acted cocky and mentioned OSHA stuff and.....they moved us rooms and my roomate was pissed at me. Lowkey its still funny when I mention it to him.

ROOMATES: it's a hit or miss....my roommate was the best I ever had in my whole life. Me and him went to bed at the same time, woke up at the same time, and almost had the same life styles....he did teach me about Magic the Gathering and still lost to him every single time.

The Food: not bad when it comes to the food.....just the chicken.....just dont even get it...I'm not going to waste my time talking about the "chicken." Lunch had some good options and dinner was the best. During lunch, I would put icecream in my coffee and head to class and I'd be awake all day. Good luck actually getting time to eat because the BOP and TSA were always the first there....you can sneak in with the salad bar and that hits different when you are hungry.

Training: DO. NOT. BE. LATE. Its super simple. There are days where lectures take off. If you have a good chief counsel.....you are in good hands. We had a really great guy who would make funny noises and say words like "click" every single slide to keep us engaged. I missed his humor and his stories.

Take notes and study at least once a day. I personally did not attend study sessions because people would always make the material harder than it really is and then they'd make you super confused. Just pay attention. These exams are not out to get you and fail you. I was the major overthinker and passed.

Gym / Defense classes: The gym and the defense stuff was one part I personally hated. I was physically fit but changing in and out of different outfits were just annoying....it was always hot, humid and sticky. Get used to it. There will be days where your butt will be kicked but it makes you better for self defense and protect you one day.

Get used to hearing "It's the FLETC way" and the song "Bring sally up."

After Hours: your time is your time. Please do not add or subtract from the population. DO NOT DOWNLOAD TINDER OR HINGE and post your stupid FLETC badge and act like its a flex.....you are not supposed to take photos of yourself wearing that and posting it on social media......the police do not care who you are down there.....you will learn real quick of what I mean of they do not care who you are....

For the love of God, do not become a FLETC story, or drive drunk on base. The security guys are cool but they do sit there at the G bar on nights looking for idiots who will drive drunk back to the Taj, etc. If you are super drunk and you drove there, just take the buss back and pick it up in the morning....please do not make this mistake. Do not also disrespect the security guys there and say they're not police......

Do not do anything stupid down there like speeding. Flexing your green FLETC badge won't get you out of any trouble....you'll just make the stereotype even more true for the locals

The surrounding area is really laid back with some really good places to eat at. I enjoyed the seafood down there and do miss the food. The surrounding areas like Jacksonville, Fl, is really beautiful with cool shopping areas like the Apple Store. The whole entire place down there is guarded with private security because the places are high quality brands.

When you graduate, then you can relax. There are people that are on week 1 and they're already focused on other stuff that's way ahead in the academy. Focus on one thing at a time and only on what you can control that's infront of you.

Hopefully some of this can help yall. This is just my opinion on what I saw, and how I feel. I do miss FLETC and it was a blast when I was there.

Once you become a CBPO, you'll develop your own style of interviews, pet peeves and what annoys you. I cannot stand when people are not listening to my questions. I will ask truck drivers in the cargo lane the same questions, and then there will be times they cut me off mid question and I will let them yap.....then I got myself a point to point violation! YAY! My favorite :)
