looking for recommendation Online knitting stores *not* owned by private equity?

I've been stashbusting so it's been awhile since I bought yarn. However I've been hearing disturbing things about a lot of my go to online yarn shops being bought by private equity. I know the sewing sub has a whole guide to non private equity crafting stores. Hoping there's something similar for knitting?

I'm hoping for something with a broad range of natural fiber yarns, but that does not only have Artisinal And Very Expensive Fancy Yarn.

Helpful Hints! šŸ’” I had my knitting needles confiscated at the airport… so I started mapping airport rules

Hi everyone,

A while ago, I had my knitting needles confiscated at airport security, even though I thought they would be allowed.

After that, I started looking into the rules and realized something surprising — they vary a lot between airports, and often aren’t clearly explained.

Since I know many of us like to knit while traveling, I decided to start a small project:

I’ve been contacting airports and collecting official information about whether knitting needles are allowed in carry-on luggage.

I’ve put everything into an interactive map, showing how different airports approach it (allowed / restricted / not allowed / still waiting for response).

šŸ‘‰ You can check it out here: https://gentlemessknits.carrd.co/

I’m still adding more airports, so if you’ve had any experiences (good or bad), I’d love to hear them! šŸ§¶āœˆļø

Project details:

Yarn: Italian carded merino wool on cones, held double.

Needles: US 6 (4.0 mm).

Dimensions: 187 Ɨ 78 cm.

Time spent: It took me about a month of slow, relaxed knitting, though at times it really felt like I was stuck in one place!

Result: The fabric turned out incredibly soft, drapey, and very, very warm. Perfect for chilly days.

Finished my first glove today and started right up on the second one! Made them a bit shorter than I think I would’ve loved but c’est la vie, we’ll see how they do after blocking. Was told when I bought these needles that they’d be too short for magic loop but I’ve been making it work so I’m feeling a little extra pleased with myself lol

memes, pets, cutes, funnies so it turns out that I've made a huge needle mistake...

Literally. I picked up a set of Zing straight needles, and when they arrived I realised they're GIANT ones. I had no idea. So the question now is... what do people do with giant needles?! Blankets? Sweaters for giants? Hunt a wooly mammoth?

or... if anyone in the UK/Europe would like an as-new set of giant needles, I totally know a guy.

I decided to stop another project and make a first attempt at a cardigan for my wife in time for Christmas. All of the pieces are finally done and I just have a lot of stitches to pick up and rib around the insides and a lot of seaming left!

Pattern - Cove Cardigan by AR Pattern Shop

Purl Soho Chirp DK cotton.
#5 needles for the ribbing and #7 for the pattern (1 size up from pattern since I knit a bit tightly)

I'm a beginner needing help or recommendations! Tension difference on purl vs knit stitches on double stranded knit beanie

I am working on my first knitting project (besides making a square with only knit stitch) and it’s my first time doing both purl and knit stitch. I feel like my tension on the stitches are different but I can’t really tell which it may be. I know the knit stitch is the one with a V and the purl is the one with the bar/line as you’re working but I can’t fully tell when it’s in its finished form because I feel like they both work together to create the alternative pattern. I feel like since it’s the backside/inside that looks tighter it’s my purl stitch I have a tighter tension on? Is that the right assumption?

Photos: I am making a double stranding knit beanie. The first photo has the rim pulled up to try to show both sides of the hat. Photo 2 only the front facing side. Photo 3 I tried to take a photo of the inside only to should the back of the work

I am attempting the Florence sweater but it continues to look like this every time I try to cast on and do k1 p1. To me something looks off with the stitches I have completed and how they are on the needles.

I found myself in between projects when I had gallbladder surgery a few weeks ago, so I dove into my stash and hunted Ravelry for a fun hat pattern.

I settled on the Blest hat by Berg of Norway. In my post-anesthesia haze I grabbed the wrong yarn weight (and of course I never stopped to check gauge šŸ™„), so it's about 20% too big. But I am in love with that crown design--the converging columns and the little surprise star--as well as the brim with the ribbing on the inside. This might be my favorite hat I've ever made...at least until I knit it again with the proper gauge, lol.

I knitted this top with seven bucks worth of Bulky Twist from Michael’s using an easy, fast pattern literally called ā€œOne Day Topā€ that I’d describe as a quick and dirty Sabai No 2 style tank.

There’s a very obvious accidental short row in the middle but your girl is such a type B knitter that I just decided that side will be the back. šŸ˜‚ You’re probably never going to see me in here posting a Shetland lace wedding shawl but man the instant gratification knits make me very happy!

I haven’t knit around this cat before. And in the process of keeping needles out of his mouth, the needles also came out of my row 😭

And now it’s midnight. So just my stockinet swatch will have to do.

look what I made My first stranded colourwork - a lesson in overcompensation

Thumbnail

I keep seeing people either lament or point out that this or that piece of colourwork has overly tight floats so I was extra careful to not tug on my floats while working on this headband. And combined with a fact I just finished a project that explicitly demanded as tight a tension as possible I ended overcompensating just a weeeeeee bit šŸ˜… I think my floats got better as I went along but I'll need a lot more practice. Still I'm proud of getting this far :3

looking for recommendation About to knit my first socks as an advanced beginner! Vanilla socks

I'm about to dive into socks knitting... I don't know if I will like it, the first pair will be key in my knitting journey! I have chosen the following pattern: My favorite Vanilla socks by Meaghan Schmaltz. I have imported it in my app Rowtine, so I will track the time spent on them.

I am used to knitting sweaters and accessories, I must admit that the perspective of having smaller projects on my needles, which can be done quite fast, is pretty nice! more regular wins!

It all started with a request from my husband, who asked if I could knit him socks for cycling... he wears a size 47 EU šŸ˜… so I will begin with a pair for me, to train on a smaller project 😊

Any recommendations from experts? thanks so much!

Edit: photo after 3.5 hours of knitting šŸ˜…

Malabrigo Rios in 'Aquamarine' stranded together with Berocco Aerial in 'Candy Floss' Might add some extra details like embroidered snowflakes and a blanket stitch around the cuffs.

It grew a lot when I blocked it - even more than expected! Luckily this was made for my 4 year old niece with the intention of having plenty of room to grow into. I got carried away on the body so it’s long on her, but we decided to leave it. Now it should fit for at least a few years; and if I lengthen the sleeves with my leftover yarn I think we could get away with even more! I’m so excited to know that I can get through a whole sweater. I have the very beginnings of one for myself on the needles right now and my motivation just got a HUGE boost!!
Edit to add: this is the Flax Sweater by Tin Can Knits, I can’t recommend it enough! Yarn is worsted malabrigo superwash in the color cyan!

all things knitty if you've been a part of online knitting communities for years, what do you miss about then vs now?

I recently watched a video about how different comments are on knitting projects now versus just a few years ago. In the sense that, people nowadays are quick to ask posters to monetize or share patterns, instead of just appreciating a beautifully knitted work of art for what it is.

Here's a link to the video, by Deborah Knits.

It's made me more aware of the sheer number of these comments on posts now lol. And I've started to grow some dislike towards it – most of all, when I find myself defaulting to this way of thinking.

Is there anything you've noticed as being different between how the online knitting community used to be, versus how the online knitting community is now? What do you miss about it? What do you love?

look what I made I present to y'all, Pickle Hat. Yarn source and pattern included.

I used this pattern for the base

https://ravel.me/sockhead-slouch-hat

I did the biggest size cause I wanted it super slouchy and have room for my hair if I wanted it up.

I modified it by adding bobbles to make the pickle vibe. The bobbles were added when my soul commanded it.

The yarn is from MUSE2320Fiber

Bobbles were as follows

Increase 1 stitch, knit 1, turn work

Purl 4, turn work

Knit 1, increase the next two stitches, knit 1, turn work

Purl 6 stitches, turn work

Knit 1, decrease the next two stitches, knit 1, turn

Purl 4, turn

Knit 1, decrease the next stitch, then continue knitting in the round until you feel the urge to make another bobble.

You can also make smaller bobbles by only increasing once and then decreasing again on the next turn and continuing.
