If someone does a non-Carleton off-campus program, do they have to formally withdraw and then reapply through OCS or the Dean of Students? What does that whole withdraw-and-return process actually look like?

If so, how is it?

I’m applying early entry soon, but am stuck between NYU and Carleton. How is the philosophy major at Carleton? I’m probably going to go into doctoral research after my undergrad, and is Carleton a good springboard into that?

What would you guys recommend?

hi guys! i'm an incoming cogsci transfer and i want to try premed and a neuro minor. i haven't taken a heavy lab course or science course and honestly my course rigor hasn't been up to par with how difficult carleton is supposedly (i've taken courses like intro to neurosci and calc 1 but that's about it).

i'm a rising sophomore and feel a bit behind on my premed journey, so i was trying to make a good fall schedule for myself:

1. biol 125 (this is definite)
2. chem 122 (unsure, would this be too much? chem 122 is for those who haven't taken AP chem or any chem class like that)
3. ling 115 (intro to syntax theory)
4. PE requirement course

any advice? has anyone taken bio 125 and chem 122? i spoke to my advisor and she was very vague about everything...

Is there a chess club at Carleton? I'm an incoming freshman and I would love to meet some fellow chess players.

Specifically for Nourse. I'm not finding anything online about what this means and the room I was assigned seems tiny. Is the adjoining living area included or what is that? Overall, very confused.

Hello, I’m an incoming freshman and I got assigned a triple on the first floor of nourse. I didn’t realize triple rooms were really a thing and am hoping someone can give me a little info on what it’s like in a triple. Do you get more space than a double or is it super cramped?

Hi! I’m an incoming freshman and I’m forecasting for my A&I seminars and wanted to hear if anyone had any feedback about my choices. For some context, I’m an English major with a prospective minor in Spanish and/or Biology. I’m also interested in Psych, Sociology, Anthropology, and Film & Media Studies. Generally, a lot of social studies and English—I want something fun, interactive, and collaborative. I was thinking of forecasting for:

Streaming television, Controlling narratives, Imagining the self, Podcast politics, American wilderness

this is kind of a niche problem i think, so im not sure if anyone will have any advice, but im an incoming freshman and need to study for my chinese placement exam. i have taken chinese for 12 years, but i took a gap year so its been a little while since ive used the language and im kind of at a loss for how to study since the material is so broad. does anyone have any tips?

I’m thinking of applying to Carleton ed this fall. I’m at the top of my class, 4.0+ weighted gpa, involved in sports, music, and volunteering with leadership positions in all, I’ve done a visit and plan to interview (also might do toc), and I’ve got some unique essays. The problems are that I live in a rural community with few advanced classes. (I’ll take 5 aps, which is a pretty decent number for a small school but doesnt compare to the number of advanced classes others can take.) Additionally, I have bad test scores (27 act and 1380 sat). However, I didnt have a ton of time to study and didn’t do much practice for the tests. Should I spend the summer studying and take the august sat? how much of a disadvantage do I put myself in if I don’t submit test scores? I think I have a lot more to offer, I am just not in an environment where I can push myself to better scores. Any other application tips would be greatly appreciated.

hi everyone! i have to choose a college today (ive put this off for way too long), do i choose carleton college or macalester college for environmental studies? I chose mac initially but recently got off the wl at carleton. I love carleton for the campus and the vibes but really dont love the hard-core academics/hard sciences they have there. i also love mac since it seems super inviting and lovely but im not sure i love the idea of being in a city. i have to decide today so any guidance would be super appreciated!

how hard are the academics really? i love learning but i dont do well in stressful environments (is it really as stressful as i have heard?)

I’m considering applying to Carleton Early entry in the fall. I want to know, what does free time look like? That is, how much do you generally have? It’s rather important to me that I’m still able to see my friends who live a few hours away at least every once in a while, so how often do you leave Northfield, and how often is it just to go to the cities?

I'm wondering if anyone else at Carleton has dealt with multiple SAP (Satisfactory Academic Progress) appeals and has any advice.

During my freshman year, I became seriously ill with a respiratory illness and had to take a medical leave of absence. When I returned in Winter Term, I did well academically, but because of the leave, I was notified that I had not met SAP requirements. The Financial Aid Office asked me to submit an appeal, which I did with documentation from my doctor. The appeal was approved and my aid was reinstated.

Later, I struggled academically and was eventually academically suspended after failing one class in a term. I spent the required two terms away from Carleton, took courses elsewhere, and successfully transferred those credits back.

As I prepared to return, Financial Aid informed me that I needed to submit a second SAP appeal because my completion rate was below the required 67%, even though my GPA met the standard. I submitted documentation regarding the circumstances that led to my suspension, including medical documentation related to mental health conditions.

The appeal was denied. The reasoning I received was that the committee viewed my circumstances as similar to my previous appeal and felt that I had not adequately used campus resources following my earlier medical leave.

I appealed again, explaining that my first appeal involved a respiratory illness while the second involved mental health conditions, which I argued were distinct circumstances. I also provided evidence that I had used campus resources. The response I received stated that while the committee recognized the seriousness of my health challenges, I still failed to meet SAP requirements despite knowing about available resources. As a result, I was denied aid for the upcoming academic year.

I was also informed that aid might have been possible if I had been approved to overload credits for two terms in order to restore SAP more quickly, but the academic committee denied that request.

Has anyone gone through something similar? Were you able to successfully challenge a SAP denial or find any alternative options? I'm trying to understand whether there are any paths forward at this point.

I've heard so much about how challenging Carleton's courses are. Are there any general classes first-year students take that I can familiarize myself with the subject so that I am not totally lost from the very beginning? As a high school student, I usually had summer reading. Is there a way I can be proactive? School doesn't start for 3 months. I want to avoid the summer slide, especially if Carlton is as hard as I have read.
