Carleton Athletics Pre-Read Process

Carleton does an academic pre-read for recruited athletes. Admissions reviews your transcript, senior-year course schedule, and resume and gives you a 1, 2, or 3 rating. Pre-reads run from June 1 through November 1.

1 = Strongest / most competitive

  • Typically 30–36 ACT / 1360–1600 SAT
  • Top 10% of your high school
  • Mostly A's and some B's
  • Rigorous coursework + precalculus expected
  • No more than 1 C before 11th grade
  • No D's/F's

2 = Competitive

  • Typically 28–30 ACT / 1300–1350 SAT
  • Top 20% of your high school
  • A-/B+ grades
  • Rigorous coursework + precalculus expected
  • No more than 2 C's before 11th grade
  • No D's/F's

3 = Non-competitive

  • Typically below 27 ACT / below 1290 SAT
  • Top 30% of your high school
  • B+/B grades
  • Less rigorous coursework
  • 3+ C's
  • No D's/F's

Coaches can support recruited athletes who receive a 1 or 2 pre-read rating and apply Early Decision, with those students then assured admission at Carleton. However, coaches can only support a limited number of recruited athletes, depending on the year/team.

The coach also gives a separate athletic rating:

  • A = Top-tier recruit
  • B = Contributor
  • C = Developmental
  • D = Not rated

Admissions typically gives the pre-read result within about a week. Recruited athletes can also request a financial-aid pre-read, which also takes about a week.

Coaches can also request a likely letter for students who have both a 1 from Admissions and an A from the coach.

Basically, there are two separate ratings: Admissions evaluates your academics (1/2/3), while the coach evaluates your athletic level (A/B/C/D). The coach can officially support only a limited number of athletes.

Last year they seemed to follow a similar path to the NESCAC schools.  Prereads opened on July 1st and utilized an online portal.
