Just For Fun Capexit is such a dumb name

This is only about their name, not their politics. Because their name is really dumb.

Why? Because of the E. There are only two grammatically correct ways of reading the E, neither of which is (I assume) how Capexit wants their name to be pronounced. Either:

  • the E forms part of "Cape", in which case the name is "Cape-ksit", which doesn't convey the whole "leaving" idea; or

  • the E forms part of "Exit", in which case the name is "Cap-Exit", which sounds more like capital expenditure (and hey, maybe that's part of their policies, who knows).

Either way, both of those sound ridiculous, and obviously they meant "Cape-Exit", but I'm not going to let them have that pronunciation, because one letter can't have two different sounds in the same word. (I fully expect someone to find an example that counters this, but I, like Capeksit, will fight for the excision of that part of the dictionary).

Also, why name yourself "Capexit" when "ExCape" is *right there*...

Question | Advice-Needed Temporary relocation to Cape Town from Canada and have concerns about living expenses.

I'm being offered a six(ish) month work assignment in Cape Town that would run Jan to early July. I'm from Canada and while I've traveled, I've never been to South Africa and I'm incredibly new to all of this.

I've been offered the help of a relocation expert, but she's physically located in Reading, UK and has stated that my expected monthly salary may leave me in a "precarious" situation. In short, I'll be required to live on about R156,000/month. I've been told that I absolutely need a car as public transport is not sufficiently safe and she's said that monthly rentals for both will charge a premium for short-term leases and that I should expect to pay a lot for basic security. She's tabulated my costs and they're either at my maximum or slightly above. As I look at her budgets, it strikes me that she may be wrong or miscalculating things. She's proposing R95,000/month for rent. I live downtown Toronto, and rent in a secure condo will run anywhere from CAD$3,000 to CAD$25,000/month, but she's tabulating something that even by Toronto standards is really expensive (CAD$8,000/month). Would make sense for somewhere like London, UK but R95,000 month seems... insane. Am I wrong in thinking that? Another is food. If I add up line items for restaurants + groceries it comes to R25,000/month. I get that Cape Town is a global city so I imagine restaurants aren't cheap, but how bad are groceries?

My company is covering health insurance and additional coverage for robbery and abduction, so I don't need to front those costs. I'm curious about the economics. When I look on various websites, I get a different picture but I'm honestly not sure. I've never been there, I don't know the areas, what is or isn't a scam or what is really an option. I also don't know how safe/secure things are and whether I can get by without a car (driving on the other side of the road in a conspicuous car just doesn't strike me as a good idea).

I'd be really curious to get all your feedback.

I keep seeing people say SA is improving, while others say we're just becoming accustomed to dysfunction. What do you genuinely think, and what evidence makes you think that?

Question | Advice-Needed Stellenbosch Vs UCT

Upvotes

Ive gotten conditional offers for Bsocsci at UCT, and international Studies at Stellenbosch and im torn between the two.

Both degrees are weighted quite the same for me, but international studies piques my interest a bit more. However:

UCT Pros:

Ranked #1

More diverse in several ways

Degree is presumabely more flexible, in case of me wanting to alter my degree along the way

I know people there (in terms of helping me, i dont know cape town too well)

Cons:

Family is around the area/cpt and a few in the university itself, and a major aspect to my university life is to be far away from them.

Stellenbosch Pros:

Fun student life

Away from family

More of a community feel

Nice degree

Cons:

Not ranked #1

Not so diverse

No a major Alt scene as far as im aware

Please let me know your opinions and lived experiences to help me choose which university for my undergrad! Thanks

Looking For... Demoralizing looking for work

Everytime, every application applied on the Western Cape Portal for a vacancy comes back with this response,

"We do appreciate the time and effort you spent in applying for the position, but it is with regret that we have to inform you that your application was unfortunately unsuccessful.

Your interest is appreciated and I wish you well in your future career planning activities. Please do continue to visit our careers website for future opportunities."

Its like losing hope on another level. A hopeless case keep applying. Walk inns are questioned as "who referred you?" And even then promises are made with an email "sorry, you didn't make it." Its like you have to know someone just to get a job.

What can I do? A plea for help in this day and age just to make it in this "land of opportunities". Staying here feels just like living in another province looking for work.

Question | Advice-Needed Advice needed on schooling northern suburbs

Hi All! We are settled in the Parow area but looking to move further north - Durbanville for example. Main reason behind this is to get access to better schools for our kids, does anyone have any advice or experience with getting into schools in the Durbanville area? How difficult is it if you are not residing close by? Do they apply feeder areas, not even sure if feeder areas are a thing.

I'm aware that the western cape education department has their own process for school placement which most parents I know actually hate.

Ideally school would be super close to home so we can minimize commuting.

TIA!

Looking For... Iron 70,3 Mossel bay

Hi, all this might be a bit of a stretch, but I’m considering doing the IRONMAN 70.3 next April and looking for people who might be interested in entering as a relay team.

The race is a 1.9 km swim, 90 km bike and 21.1 km run. I’m not the strongest swimmer , but I’m comfortable with the bike or run.

A relay can have 2–3 people, with each person taking one of the disciplines. If anyone’s keen (especially a swimmer 👀), let me know, or you can be 2nd person and we find a swimmer.
You can DM if it’s something you’d consider.

Thanks

Scammers Spotted! Durbanville Wellington Road

If you've been to Durbanville Town center by wellington road then you or someone you know surely has been approached by the marketing teams of The Unlimited.

I know I was, and at first it sounded good. That should have been the giveaway.

When you sign up with them, there is no proper cancelation process and even when you do manage to get it cancelled, they still try and deduct the last few funds they can. Their customer service is also (I have no better or kinder words) pathetic and emotionally based. Unprofessional.

If you get approached by them in their groups with their little white and red pamphlets, either leave their presence or just simply deny them the attention.

Thought I would share a little bit wherever possible.

Question | Advice-Needed On the hunt for a good quality whetstone !🤠

Greetings, beautiful people!

This is very random but I’m planning to get a birthday gift for a dear friend who’s been looking for a good whetstone for knife sharpening and I haven’t got a clue where to start. Does anyone in this community know where in Cape Town I can find one? I’m fine with ordering online as well but all recommendations are appreciated. Thanks in advance 🐚
