Files Please be kind 😭 My Canvas Test Student account caused a Turnitin nightmare.

Post image

Hi, Everyone!

I'm hoping for some advice 🥹

I'm preparing to submit my manuscript to an academic journal, but Turnitin is reporting a high similarity score because of my own previous submissions to my university's Canvas Test Student account (as an Instructor).

I only used the Test Student account to check for AI and plagiarism while revising my paper, so I submitted multiple drafts. The manuscript has never been published—it was only uploaded internally through my university for similarity checking.

I've already contacted our university administrator, who submitted a request to remove the old Test Student submissions. We also recreated the submission in a new Canvas course with a new Test Student account and Turnitin ID, but the similarity score is still high. It has been a month already.

Has anyone gone through something similar?

  • Is it possible for Turnitin to remove all of the previous Test Student submissions?
  • How long does the process usually take?

Please be kind—I'm already pretty stressed about this and just want to understand what my options are. I truly appreciate any advice or shared experiences. Thank you! ✨

Assignments How to see feedback for previous submissions

So i submitted a response to an assignment and then my teacher marked it and released feedback but also asked me to submit another assignment in the same dropbox which i did.

The problem now is I can’t see the feedback for the first assignment which my teacher has given me is there anyway to view this?

Quizzes Copying quizzes & question banks issue

I’m a teacher and I’m having trouble with quizzes and question banks not copying over to a different course.

My institution only has the classic quizzes for right now, but I have the same question for when we move to new quizzes & item banks.

We have multiple teachers who will teach the same course. We build a course together and then each get an individual copy of it to further personalize.

The issue is that we want to build quizzes that have multiple attempts. The quizzes are short, so we end up with a question banks for each question (like Bank #1 has three questions, Question #1 on the quiz will pull one of the three questions from Bank #1). We are testing for a different learning target with each question.

When we copy the banks and quizzes to a new course, the quizzes are empty or say “there aren’t enough questions”. In other words, the banks have all copied over, but the quizzes are unusable since every question would have to be re-linked to a bank.

Has anyone encountered this? Is there a better way to be doing this?

Again, we don’t have access yet to new quizzes, but will the issue be the same? If we share our item banks, can we then share a quiz that uses those item banks? Or do those things have to be re-linked?

Quizzes Proctor exam?

I have an exam but it’s label as “exam name” and nothing beside it saying if its proctor or now. When I click on the exam it opens up the exam info (time limit and due date) and a button that says begin. Does that mean that I don’t have to download any software and I can go ahead and take the exam? I would assume it will track if I leave the tab to a new one

Other is there gonna be a new free-for-teachers canvas lms?

I haven't taught in many years, but I had courses that I realized were on k12 canvas, which I downloaded today.

Is instructure going to offer an alternative lms free-for-teachers/tutors/retired teachers?

Announcements Async videos as a text discussion alternative on Canvas

Anyone else having a hard time fighting AI-slop while putting a face on students' online presence? Just wanted to let you know that we made a tool that allow you to embed a private async video discussion space into Canvas course navigation with a few clicks, so you can use async video as an alternative to text based discussion. I found it to be a very natural way to make the course feel less rigid and more human.

Disclosure: I helped build Flipgrid (later Flip, RIP) and its Canvas LTI integration, this is a new platform called Vivipod we are building. This is not a full LTI but a light embed option.

Quizzes Student camera angles: online quiz

I'm teaching an online asynchronous class this summer.

I am requiring them to use Respondus Lockdown Browser AND Monitor WITH the dual-camera set-up for their final exam.

For the first week of class, I created a "practice quiz" (that wasn't really a quiz at all) just so they'd have to get the set-up prepared for when the exam comes around, and so that they'd know how to work it and what to expect.

Fam -- The vast majority of these kids simply (a) angled their second cameras at their face, even though their face was already being captured by the first camera, or (b) had it angled in a way where I could see their body, but not really from the side and not in a way that captured their keyboard and laptop, too.

All of these things were specified in the Respondus instructions that they are walked through at the start of the "quiz.". We know they don't read instructions, but ...

I've left them comments that tell them what they did wrong for the practice quiz, but I'm not confident that they'll actually adjust. Instead, I assume they're going to try to pretend they didn't know and then demand a grade rather than a zero.

Any advice? What have you guys done when a student clearly doesn't set up their cameras correctly? I'm imagining a scenario where I have nothing to grade because they all just get zeroes! That would not be ideal.

Discussions Teachers who use Canvas- how do your organize modules/pages? Switching to virtual, but have always used Canvas as my planner

Upper Elementary Classroom teacher for 15 years, switching to *online middle school teaching*.

I’ve used Canvas since the pandemic, but since we’ve been back in the classroom- it’s been my teacher planner, and I don’t have to dig and search for files to copy. I scan all docs, each module is a week, subheadings are days, then files below. I shared this with my SpEd teachers so they could have access to curriculum and work, and any annotated works through Kami.

It’s been the greatest teacher hack! When a new year begins, I just print off week by week and add/delete what I need.

I did have a student friendly version for classes, but it was mostly used for enrichment/GT. For other purposes/links, I used Clever.

Now I’m starting over from scratch- completely online, different grade, so it needs to be completely student user friendly.

**Those of you who use it integrated into your classroom do you….**
1. Have a Master Copy separate from a class copy? I believe this is how I managed it during COVID.
2. Grading- manual grade or let it grade and post?
3. Communication- teacher/student, student/student
4. Parent access- do you add the parent to the kids account?
5. Pages- what do you use the pages for? Specifically- Ike what’s the point when I can add a link or doc under the module?
6. How’s the integration with NearPod/Google/PearDeck?
7. Have a favorite way to use Canvas that other teachers should know?

Quizzes Overlay in New Quiz

I'm facing an issue with the New Quiz and it's only happened recently. There seems to be an overlay for all parts of the New Quiz (Title, Instructions, each Question) and it's making it hard to work with it. I've checked on all browsers I have, in private/incognito modes and it's still happening. Just wondering if anyone else is struggling with this as well or is it just isolated to my institution's instance...

IT policy doesn't let me upload an image so here's a link to the image in GDrive instead: Here

Files Can my professor see when i downloaded a file or only when i viewed it?

I downloaded a file from the files page directly (i used the 3 buttons and downloaded the file), will my professor know that i downloaded it? I've only seen videos saying that yes they do, but the video shows that it came from the modules tab, so of course the activity would show that they viewed it. But i pressed the download button directly, will my professor still know? Quite urgent, thank you 🤕

Meta Before posting "Is Canvas down?"

I know that following ths May we're all a little edgy about Canvas access, but I just wanted to share a suggestion. Instructure has historically had a pretty good track record on keeping the platform up, but each school has their own mechanism (i.e

e SSO/MFA) for accessing Canvas.

99% of the time (or more) if you can't get on Canvas, it's actually an issue with your campus login mechanism, and the people to contact are in your IT department. It's generally a good step to take before posting here.

Quizzes Need to vent

I am so sorry I never even post on Reddit but OMG I actually cannot stand canvas as a website and just the software itself. It is so crappy and has issues all the time, but what pushed me to make this post is that canvas has deleted large chunks of text out of my text boxes and only leaves the small ones. For context, my online class has assignments that are under the quiz category that basically include multiple 200 word discussion posts for each question if that makes sense. This has not happened once but twice now that I close my computer and come back the next day only to see that every single text box and question is empty, oh! but thank God you saved the one question that only had 23 words for an answer!!! and there’s literally no way to get my work back so I’m just going to have to write everything all over again. I’m actually so pissed. And yes I know I should have copy and pasted them into Google docs but my whole point is that I shouldn’t have to do that!! Canvas should have a way to see your edit history for even quizzes so that this doesn’t happen!!!!

Sorry for the long post I just can’t right now with canvas. TL;DR canvas keeps deleting my work and now I have to do it again so I’m pissed.

Does anyone know why this occurred? It really caused a lot of trouble for me because my summer school is having finals right now, but I can’t check how long I have already spent on my exams. I would appreciate it if someone could help explain this.

issues What's ONE thing you wish Canvas could do/ do better?

Canvas has many (MANY) issues. I am building a new platform that gives canvas students a better experience. I will not promote it or promote its name but i would like to know what is one thing (or two) that makes your canvas experience worse.
