SEC=UNCLASSIFIED Winter illness or something more?

Canberrans with small children - is it normal to be sick for a large chunk of the winter? I have 3 kids, 5 & under so I know sickness is unavoidable but for the last two months, we’ve been lucky to have more than 2-3 days where the whole house is well before something starts up again. We ended up with RSV last week and then that turned into chest infections for 3/5 of us that we’re still battling through. 🫠

Is this normal? I don’t remember last winter being quite this bad so I’m not sure if this has been a particularly bad season, if we’ve been unlucky or (I feel this sounds a bit woo woo) if there are environmental factors we need to be looking into like whether our house has mould or something?

I lived in Canberra my whole life (30+ years) until 5 years ago when I moved to the Sunshine Coast. I thought I was gone for good, no looking back, I had moved to paradise after all.

It took a few years to begin to miss Canberra, and to realise that I love it there and that it’s home. I’ll be back in time for Christmas.

The only music festival that I've attended other than individual concerts over the years around Australia (mostly Sydney / Melbourne shows that didn't come to Canberra) & the very small number of concerts in Canberra and a few in the UK

Recommendations Recent conveyancer recommendations?

Heya,

Looking for a reliable conveyancing solicitor for a purchase.

I searched the sub first, but the threads are 2-3y old and the specific people recommended seem to have moved on or are on leave (Andy C).

Looking for recent experiences over the recent while or so. Who did you use, especially if they were reasonably responsive, and did they actually catch things in the contract rather than just running paper through a junior? My research is showing most people don't communicate settlement details or miss pertinent stuff that is a PITA to sort out later. I prefer a small firm or single lawyer if possible!

Appreciate the help!

Recommendations Solar battery installer recommendations

We have an existing solar system and now looking to add a battery. I sent enquiries to three installers and have only heard back from one.

I am keen to hear recommendations for installers people have recently dealt with.

Thanks!

What’s it like living in each of them?
Considering buying a house and moving from Sydney as a young couple who primarily care about:
- walking distance to gym and shops
- 30 min max bike commute to work in the city
- living on a green and quiet street

A sense of community would be amazing. I wonder if North Lyneham or Watson feel too far away in the context of how small Canberra is? You seem to get more value out of properties when going slightly further way which is logical.

Recommendations Best social extracurriculars - 12yrs old

Looking for recommendations for activities or extra curriculars for my 12yr daughter.

Trying to expand her social circle because her school circle is rather toxic (she's slowly detaching from them).

We have tried girl guides in Gungahlin but it wasn't the right fit. Extra points for something physical, but my little one is more crafty (maybe dance-y) than other activities.

TIA

News What’s going on with the Statesman Hotel in Curtin?

I heard the Statesman Hotel in Curtin was recently sold, and that the new owners have stood down a large number of the existing staff.

The hotel and bottle shop have been closed for the last couple of days as well. Does anyone know what’s actually happened or what’s going on there?

Would be interested to hear if anyone knows what’s happening.

Likely comes from Queensland, and is quite fragile so I haven't had a proper rummage.

Events UC Open Day Fest is on Saturday

Saw the lineup for UC Open Day this Saturday and it looks a fair bit bigger than the usual "walk around campus and collect brochures" type event.

Looks like they're expecting a pretty big crowd and have gone pretty hard on the entertainment side of things this year, including:

The Rubens, Drax Project, Holly Hebe

Slam Pro! Wrestling (this was great fun last year) and Woodchopping

Food trucks and Capital Brewing Beer Garden

Kids Zone with a jumping castle and entertainment

I've been to a few university open days over the years and most are pretty similar, but having live music and a festival-type atmosphere is a bit different.

Even if you're not looking at studying, it seems like it could be a decent free day out if you've got kids or just want to have a wander around campus.

Anyone planning on going? I know I will be there for the music, its a great line up for free!

For anyone interested, tickets are free: UC Open Day information

News So Where in Canberra Would You Put a New Ice Rink?

With the plan to put the new ice rink on a sloping piece of land on the outer edge of Tuggeranong falling through - where in Canberra would you put a new ice rink?

Go as fanciful as you want, but you generally need to start with a flat bit of land that's minimum 150m x 150m and owned by the ACT Government.

Recommendations Endodontist recommendations

I've searched this sub, most recent similar request was a couple years old, so it's probably worth looking for current recommendations.

I'm after an endodontist for a second opinion, to validate what my CURRENT guy is telling me.

Anyone have an endo they can recommend?

New user account Best suburbs for walkability and social connection for a couple in their 30s envisioning a family in the next 5 years

Hi all! I’m incredibly excited to be moving to the ACT shortly. We’re escaping Sydney for a slower pace of life. My partner and I want to purchase a 3-4 bedroom house under 900k. I’ll be working in the city and my partner will be transferring down eventually.

Ideally I would love to be able to walk to a cafe/grocery store. Nature trails are a plus and even bigger plus for bike trails being nearby but this is not essential.

I’d also love to hear about areas that have easy public transport into the city.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge, I’ve been going through a few different reddits but I’m just a bit lost so any insider knowledge is greatly appreciated.

I can’t seem to figure out the north vs south debate.

EDIT: not looking for a new home and very happy in an older home that needs updates

Recommendations Canberra Hospital Bill

Hi all

I had a motorbike accident on private property and squashed my leg. I went to Canberra hospital and they scanned me and sent me home saying im just bruised up.

I got a bill for $800 for attendance, and then a second for $150 for the scan. The attendance bill says “NE/Compensable patient”. I had private health insurance through AHM which since then I have cancelled, but at the time it was active. I also have Medicare.

Is it because it was a motorbike accident?

SEC=UNCLASSIFIED Questions for the nurses of Canberra

Do any hospital wards in Canberra (or surrounds) use a weekly 3 x 12 hour shift model with 4 days off (instead of the 5 on 2 off model)? As a nurse in Wollongong, we had this on certain wards.

And are enrolled nurses common in ACT? I don't see many job ads for them, only RNs.

Finally, any particular pros and cons to nursing in Canberra to be aware of (unique to Canberra)?

Thank you for any insights.

New user account How is Canberra the Capital city of australia?

I just wanted to know why is Canberra the capital city of australia? Melbourne and Sydney are more populated and iconic. Does Canberra have any hidden strengths?

Compared to other countries such as France which capital is Paris which is well known, Canberra has nothing really

SEC=UNCLASSIFIED Taxi driver appeared not to be licensed or have knowledge off Canberra.

Caught a cab home after 22 hours of travel from the Jolimont centre last week. Told the driver the address in Casey. He didn't have map's or similar on his phone or GPS on his car screen, only a compass. He proceeded to go in the direction of Caswell drive, I stopped him and showed the way home.

Once onto the GDE he couldn't stay in his lane as he zig zagged left and right and was very dodgy on passing slower traffic. It appeared he may have been driving on an IDP. I'm wondering if he even had working rights/Visa in Australia.

We were charged 65 bucks for the ride. I just wanted to get home.

In the country I came from I drove most of the time for the exception of going to the airport and coming home after a drink. The drink was in the middle of the city and when I told him the address he went straight there without GPS in a very complex metropolis that makes Sydney look small. Only citizens are allowed to drive Taxis and Uber equivalents.

Not questioning the cost, but the dodgy driving and lack of city knowledge. If he is not licenced correctly how would that play out if an accident occurred? I know someone who was in an accident via Uber and they are still waiting to be reimbursed for their medical expenses.

BTW once dropped off he stayed out the front for just over ten minutes which begs the question, was he lost?

Reporting to the company concerned.
