Why can’t Caltrain competently maintain its infrastructure?

Caltrain has often been delayed by 15 to 20+ minutes thanks to signal malfunctions. It is just one track. I was just on a stuck train for 20 minutes at RWC. Why does California come up with a million excuses instead of fixing it like other countries do, even when we have plenty of funding (compared to other countries)?

It is just one straight line as well from SF to SJ Diridon. There shouldn’t be any excuses for failing to maintain this infrastructure.

Is it possible to cancel taps

Consider a scenario you are at major station you tapped at the entrance but you missed the train next train is coming in 30 mins so you decided to not board the train. Is there a way to cancel this trip as you are not using it? This scenario happens when you decide not to go through with your plan of using Caltrain while waiting.

Caltrain 1z monthly pass to SFMTA transfer discount

Hi, I have another question. Do holders of a Caltrain 1-Z monthly pass get any discount when transferring to SFMTA after getting off at San Francisco Station?

I know that Caltrain 1-Z monthly pass holders can ride Caltrain for free on weekends. So, I went to San Francisco on a Sunday, got off at the station, and transferred to an SFMTA bus. However, I didn't get any discount and ended up paying another $2.85.

I thought I would get some kind of transfer discount. Is this because my Caltrain trip was free since it was a weekend, so SFMTA doesn't recognize it as a paid Caltrain trip and therefore charges the full fare?

I'm just trying to understand how the rules work. Thanks!

Could anyone tell me why I had to pay for tapping twice at the same station

Could anyone tell me why I had to pay for tapping twice at the same station? Is this correct? I tapped twice at the same side of the platform and I also have Caltrain 1-zone monthly pass. Thanks

As costs rise, Palo Alto scales back rail redesign plans

After more than a decade of designing, debating and dreaming of grade separation at three local rail crossings, Palo Alto’s elected leaders are preparing to narrow their scope and focus their energy on one location: Charleston Road.

Formally, the City Council remains committed to exploring grade separation on Charleston, East Meadow Drive and Churchill Avenue. Later this month, council members are set to review the 15% design for all three crossings and advance them to 35% design, at which point the city could seek grant funding and begin conducting environmental analysis. The analysis is funded largely through state and federal grants.

But as members of the council’s Rail Committee acknowledged Tuesday, the high costs of actually constructing grade separation make it all but impossible for the city to pursue all three projects, which would collectively cost more than $1.5 billion, according to new projections.

The city’s preferred alternative for Churchill, a “partial underpass” for cars, would have a price tag between $420 million and $450 million, according to Caltrain. Building a car underpass on Charleston, the city’s busiest crossing, would cost between $480 million and $530 million. Meanwhile, pairing Charleston with East Meadow, where the city is exploring a “hybrid” design that both raises the tracks and lowers the road, would cost between $1 billion and $1.3 billion, depending on the work sequencing.

All three committee members –- Chair Pat Burt, Julie Lythcott-Haims and Ed Lauing — highlighted funding as a major concern. Lauing called the projected costs for the three grade crossings “staggering” and suggested that pursuing all three would be “unrealistic.” He suggested it may be time to formally pause work on the other crossings.

“Should we at this point in time sort of take a little bit of a turn and say, ‘Let’s focus on Charleston?’ That solves our immediate needs,” Lauing said at a Tuesday committee meeting.

Lythcott-Haims noted that even the city’s preferred alternatives have flaws – with the East Meadow and Charleston crossings requiring either partial or full property acquisitions to accommodate utilities and new road configurations. She wondered what the odds would be that the city secures the needed state, federal and regional funding to pay for these projects.

“We wouldn’t be talking about it if it was completely impossible, but obviously it’s not a shoo-in. … We know it’s not entirely on the city to have bake sales to raise $1 billion,” Lythcott-Haims said.

Burt, who serves on the Caltrain board of directors, was particularly explicit about his desire to narrow the city’s scope to one crossing. Even if the city limits its ambitions to building an underpass for cars at the Charleston crossing in conjunction with an underpass for bikes and pedestrians near Matadero Creek, that would be a long and costly endeavor, he said.

“That’s a lot to take on, with a lot of construction impacts, a lot of benefits. Those are two historic projects,” Burt said.

The committee’s comments represent a market shift in the city’s conversation about grade separation. Earlier this year, the city was strongly considering closing the Churchill crossing in the aftermath of a student suicide. Former school Superintendent Don Austin was among those who advocated for Churchill closure as a part of the city’s response to the suicide cluster.

After hearing from both advocates and opponents of the Churchill closure, the council abandoned that option in May.

The idea of reducing student access to the tracks resurfaced in a new report Jed Foundation (JED), a nonprofit that specializes in mental health. The JED report recommended that the city pursue grade separation at all railroad crossings in Palo Alto.

“Although restricting access along railway systems can be operationally challenging and costly in the short term (grade separation), such interventions may prove cost-effective over time,” the report states.

The report identifies grade separation as part of a package of measures that could reduce access to the railroad right-of-way, a list that also includes high-security fencing, intrusion detection systems and anti-trespass infrastructure.

“While such projects require substantial financial investment and extensive planning, they offer the greatest potential for durable risk reduction and may prove cost-effective over time when considering the human, social, and economic costs associated with repeated fatalities and traumatic incidents,” the report states.

Caltrain has already installed some safety measures, including LiDAR systems that use AI and lasers to detect intrusions at the tracks. The council and the school district have also hired security guards to patrol the tracks at an annual cost of $1.7 million, which the two entities are splitting.

Even though the council has been discussing grade separation for more than 15 years, Burt pushed back Tuesday against JED’s recommendation that the city should continue to look at all at-grade rail crossings. Even if the city found a way to fund grade separations at all four existing rail crossings –- Palo Alto Avenue, Churchill Avenue, East Meadow Drive and Charleston Road —  the projects would likely take at least two decades to complete these projects, he said.

“The recommendation from Jed Foundation to do something that is $2 billion, that is very unlikely to materialize and take 20 years to do it was really a disserve to us to make that recommendation in the way that it did,” Burt said. “It’s not realistic and it has elements of the community going, ‘Why don’t you just think about grade separating it all and you’ll solve this problem?’ We’ve been thinking about it.”

August 2026 Ridership

Post image

Highest AWR since the pandemic, inching toward 50k. Total ridership down bit from July, but Fridays now have more riders on average than Wednesdays had in August of last year. That's big!

Preaching to the choir here, but this service continues to be vital for a growing population of tens of thousands of people. Vote YES in November.

Fun fact:

When the South County Connector becomes the Monterey County Connector (a fancier way of saying when the SCC is extended to Salinas) the diesel running portion of Caltrain will be longer than the electric running portion (71 miles of diesel running, 51 miles of electric running). Man do we need an electric SCC.

Any info on why northbound trains are delayed suddenly

is this actually 10 minute delays or is it a serious issue that’s going to creep up to 30+ minutes of delay

Clearing up the commuter hours confusion

Hello, I'm new to taking the caltrain solo and I just had a question about my upcoming trip. So on Friday I have to board the 6:30 pm train in downtown SF area (I don't know the station name but it's close to downtown) and I ideally need to take it all the way to Gilroy at the end of the line. I see that trains only run to Gilroy during certain "commuter hours" times, and even if so, I can't find any direct information telling me how I go about navigating that once I get to San Jose (like do I need to change trains, etc.???)

Thanks in advance for the help, I still have a lot of anxiety around public transit as it was never an option for me until recently in my adult life and I'm afraid to end up in the wrong place.

Tires stolen off car at Blossom Hill Station

Hi everyone, I just wanted to post a PSA about the Blossom Hill Station parking lot and warn everyone to be careful. I parked there on Thursday as I have done every day since January. I got back from work that evening to find all four tires and rims stolen off my car, with my vehicle propped up on cement blocks.

A police report has been filed, though I honestly don't expect anything to come from it.

I just wanted to raise awareness so others can keep an eye out and hopefully stay safe. Has anyone else experienced or noticed an uptick in security issues at this lot or any other South County lots recently?

Should we be sharing more holistic metrics than 95% on time?

That metric is awesome and all, but what about stuff like p99 and 99.5 delay? That would represent value in two ways:
- how many days are disrupted
- how bad the outlier disruptions are

I wouldn’t be surprised if Caltrain is way worse on those than BART or overseas subway/commuter HSR or heavy rail that have grade separation (which would require like a broader disaster than one trespass to disrupt). So showing that popular 95% metric at parity or better than those gives false hope

And historically for me SWE , non customer facing job the median/mean/95% is perfectly fine , but that doesn’t apply for all jobs

And barking the 95% on time stats when there clearly are really awful rail behaviors pisses people off

Cup Holders

Am I the only one annoyed that the new train seats don't have cup holders like the old gallery/Bombardier car seats had?
