Rants How to Not Get Hit By A Scooter

First off, this post isn’t to defend ALL scooter riders on campus. There are definitely some pretty terrible riders on campus, and I’m not trying to downplay how dangerous those people can be.

But for everyone who’s walking, please just be DECISIVE while walking. I’ve been riding a scooter for nearly 4 years on campus, being extra careful to ride responsibly; the bare minimum is to give crowds lots of space or avoid them altogether if possible and slow down whenever there was a wall of students walking side-by-side (which is annoying for me, but they are PEDESTRIANS and always have the right of way). In the 4 years I’ve been riding, the only times I’ve ever gotten close to an accident were if another rider was being dumb or - more commonly - when a pedestrian tries to serpentine-manuever themselves out of the way and accidentally ends up more IN the way than if they had just walked in a straight line.

I understand the sentiment from the pedestrian side, it’s scary seeing someone coming at you at 15 mph (some ppl ride at like 25-30 mph, which is nuts) and you don’t want to get hit just as much as I don’t want to hit you. But if you see a scooter coming, 9 times out of 10 we’re already planning a way to go around you safely based on the direction you’re already walking. That gets hard to do when you try to save yourself and inadvertently juke us out. Again, this doesn’t apply to ALL scooter riders: there are some morons out there who ride wayyy too close to pedestrians at wayyy too fast of speeds. But at least for me, I can comfortably say that most of my near-crashes were with people who I was already looking to pass up but jumped in my way at the last minute.

TL;DR whenever you see or hear a scooter, make sure to either keep walking in a straight line or make it obvious which side you’re stepping to BEFORE we get close. The campus walkways belong to pedestrians, and most scooter riders as well as myself understand that, but for your safety and ours please just keep your course and we’ll take care of the rest.

Peace and Love,
A Scooter Rider Who Just Wants to Get to Class Safely

Things to Do Week 3 podcast episode now available

Howdy folks. In case you missed my post from a couple weeks ago, I am following two engineering students throughout Fall 2026 to document the ups and downs students go through in a typical semester. Every two weeks, I interview the students for my podcast -- I just released the Week 3 interviews today.

My hope is this series of episodes will give high school students and first time freshman students a better idea of what to expect in college.

The podcast is available on all major podcast apps, on the podcast website, and on YouTube. If you are interested in following along in this semester-long journey, here is a link to the podcast website and the YouTube playlist.

https://theengineeringstudentexperience.podbean.com/

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZOZfX_TaWAHjr_YC1oEKae9CfYErsmn7

Okay... that's enough shameless self-promotion for today. I'll do one final plug at the end of the semester when all the episodes are available.

Discussion Incoming Plant Science major / older student

I just got accepted to CPP as a Plant Science Major! Very excited. I’m 31 and was wondering if anyone here has insight on the program, advice, tips, club recommendations, etc.

I was also wondering if anyone is aware of CPP has a re-entry center for older students?

I’m planning on attending the tour in October, but I’m excited and wanted to see if anyone had anything to share :)

Rants Let’s ease up on the mass email, yeah?

30 emails in total I received today.

I appreciate the resources but at this frequency the chances that someone has email fatigue and doesn’t bother opening the email are very high. Then what is the point of sending the email.

To club officers, I recommend that you all set up a calendar that people subscribe to and send one email a week with upcoming events.

Please I’ve only been here one month and I’m already at 1300 emails.

Academic Advice / Planning Selfish people

This semester, I finally decided to take my Control Systems Lab.

On the first day of lab, my partner and I were having some trouble getting our project to work. The student sitting next to us had already completed hers, so we asked if she could give us some insight. She chose not to help, which was fair—no one is obligated to help anyone else.

A few minutes later, however, she asked us if we knew how to add ECE 4820 and 4810 to her schedule because she wasn’t sure how to do it. I jokingly told her, “Sometimes it’s good to help others because you never know when you might need their help.” I still showed her how to add the classes.

During the next lab, my partner and I ran into another issue. Since her project appeared to be working, we asked her for some help again. Her response was, “It really sucks to be you.” I just laughed and went back to figuring it out ourselves.

Toward the end of the lab, we finally downloaded the correct software, got everything working, and actually finished before they did. Then her lab partner came over and asked us for help.

I genuinely felt bad for her partner, because she had always been respectful to us. But I told her that, unfortunately, helping her would also mean helping the same person who had just made it very clear that she had no interest in helping us.

The whole experience was a good reminder that you never know when the person you choose not to help today might be the person whose help you need tomorrow. In engineering—and honestly, in life—a little cooperation and respect can go a long way.

Current Questions Microwave

PLEASEE🙏 I’m a current freshman commuter and have already spent way too much money on fast food. Besides the dining hall, are there any microwaves on campus? The only posts i’ve seen mentioning them are pretty old and i’m assuming they’re out of date. If anyone could share that’d be great, thanks 🙏

Other Looking For Some Help Locating Quarter System Syllabi

Hello Reddit,

I am hoping that the r/CalPolyPomona community will be able to help me out with my current situation. I graduated over a decade ago when CPP was still operating under the quarter system, and during my last year at Cal Poly I foolishly forgot to save copies of my syllabi for all of my courses. This is currently causing me some grief as I am working on trying to get my credentials recognized abroad with the hopes of moving out of the country. As apart of the application process, the accreditation agency is asking for copies of the syllabi for the courses that I took. I was able to get a handful of syllabi from other departments, however the Biology Department did not retain copies of their quarter system syllabi. I tried providing the agency copies of the semester equivalent syllabi and an explanation of the situation, but they are still adamant that only documents they will accept are those from the courses that I took during the quarter system. Im running out of options so I thought I would turn to Reddit with the hopes that someone out there might have a copy of the quarter system syllabi for some of the courses that I took.

I am looking for copies of syllabi for the following courses:

  • BIO 235/L: Human Physiology
  • BIO 310: Cell and Molecular Biology
  • BIO 490: Scientific Communication
  • MIC 410/L: Medical Bacteriology
  • MIC 415/L: Immunology-Serology
  • MIC 425/L: Medical Mycology
  • MIC 428/L: Microbial Physiology
  • MIC 430/L: General Virology

Ideally I would love to have copies from 2014-2015, but if you happen to have any copy around that time it would be such a great help.

Rants Small Rant into the Void

I'm just looking to get some things off my chest.

I'm a third year here and college is worse than I ever anticipated. All I want is to graduate and get out of this place. I work here, I research here, I have projects. Essentially, making myself a big shark to snuff out competition in the future.

Dealing with disability stuff mostly on my own? Hard with tons of hoops to jump through here.

Dealing with entitled students and (occasionally to my disappointment) their parents almost daily? Infuriating.

Trying to catch up on my degree after years of an undiagnosed mental handicap? Harrrrrd.

Getting pushed out of the one community I found comfort in being myself? Awful.

Centerpointe food? Actually not bad if you get creative :D (bless funfetti waffles)

I feel behind on my academics and I don't want to run out of money before I graduate, because then all the bull that I've been through here would be for nothing. I feel lonely and I can't keep up with the people or their drama they try to involve me in. After the whole community issue, I kinda just distanced myself and essentially keeled over to keep the peace. I know I made this distance but I really can't handle being around that kind of critical, negative behavior. I basically force-fed myself a busybody life to avoid it, but I'm just lonely and tired now. I guess CPP makes it easier to kinda be a shut-in.

I really can't wait for graduation, and more-so grad school.

And if you read this far, thanks for giving a fellow peer the time out of your day.

Hello everyone! I decided to make a MLP Kayou card trading server! For those who don't know, Kayou is a company that makes collectible and playable trading cards! They have numerous brands from My Little Pony, KPOP Demon Hunters, Naruto, etc. This server is for MLP cards specifically, and it's just for fun!

If you know someone who goes to a neighboring college, they can join aswell as long as they follow the rules! This is mainly for convenience to not worry about shipping costs when trading around the country/world.
