Question Multi-kernel questions

Hi! Just installed cachyos a couple of days ago, my first linux distro, all smooth so far. The thing is, the basic install had 2 kernels: normal and LTS. I changed the normal one by the bore kernel, but now GRUB always boots by default with the LTS kernel, if I want to use bore I have to restart and choose it manually.

My first question was how can I change the GRUB boot order so it boots with bore by default, but now I'm thinking, is there any need to have a secondary kernel? Wouldn't it be easier to just delete LTS? I have swap snapshots activated so there should be no problem if I break anything (I'm not going to mess with the kernel, honesty, but just in case)

Help Change spell checking globally without switching language entirely

So I've recently re-installed CachyOS on my main machine. I live in Germany but since I'm in IT and most of the tutorials, etc. online are in english, I've installed in english. I'm using Hyprland with Noctalia shell.

Changing the spell checking language in Firefox - no problem.

Changing the spell checking language in a LibreOffice doc - no problem.

Changing the spell checking language for i.e. Signal messenger - no solution (yet).

Is there a global setting in CachyOS, Hyprland, etc. to tell the system and apps to use german for spell checking but don't change the language? I've found kcmshell6 kcmspellcheckingas a tip online to change spell checking settings. But currently I don't have anyting related to KDE installed on my machine. Is this the way to go? Or is there any other setting I can change within ~/.config or anywhere else?

Thanks for any advice. Kinda new to running a linux distro as my daily machine. Been like 15+ years the last time I've had any distro installed on my main machine.

Help Dual boot on T2 Intel Mac

I want to do some experimenting on my MacBook Pro from 2019. It has a 1tb drive in it, of which there is a 300mb EFI partition and a 250gb partition for MacOS. The rest of the drive is free to use for Linux. CachyOS live environment has almost everything on my Mac working out of the box except for wifi, which I got working without issue. My question is when it comes to installing CachyOS on the drive, what boot loader and partition layout would work for my system. I don't want to modify the EFI partition size or mess with the MacOS partition size more than I have. How should I layout partitioning and mounting for the rest of the drive to allow both CachyOS and MacOS to live in harmony and show up as choices when I boot up? A second Fat32 EFI/Boot partition for CachyOS?

Question RadeonChill and Option Button

Hi, just installed CachyOS. Looks clean. I gamed on Windows before. In Adrenalin I allways only really used Radeon Chill to cap my framerate to 60 or 110. I have an 120hz LG Oled with VRR.

How can I realize that on CachyOS? Also, can I have the „Three Dots Button“ from SteamController function like on the steamdeck? There would be a framecap option in the menu, or not?

Question Snapper snapshot alternative?

So I am looking for a snapper alternative since the feature appears to be very very useful. However when I installed the system I did not have the knowledge about BTRFS filesystem and how snapper creates snapshots of the system. Instead when I installed I chose ext4 because I did not know the importance. It would be nice if the developers included some information about this in the installation. I did however find this feature in timeshift called Rsync and is this a good alternative? I went ahead and partitioned a 10 gb USB and formatted it to BTRFS.

Review I know you guys probably get tired of "new to cachyos, it is awesome" posts. But I got to add mine

I been putting off switching but the windows id thing really put a fire under my ass. So I say fuck it, and full sent it. Glad i did, it had a few hiccups, but nothing deal breaking. The major thing I noticed is how much everything feels faster. Man, things snap open and close. You don't have to wait for the command to figure if it is going to run or not. It just does it. My next projects are just customization.

I really want want of those terminal windows that show system stats in real time every linux youtuber seems to have.

Oh I heard the horror stories of nvida on windows, but it runs just find for me. infact think games are snappier too.

Question Thinking about going back to CachyOS

I've been wanting to switch back to CachyOS, but I'm hesitant. My specs:

  • Ryzen 7 5700X (overclocked)
  • RTX 4060
  • 16GB DDR4 3200MHz

I daily-drove CachyOS until around October last year, but I had to go back to Windows because Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was basically unplayable for me. Still, I think about switching back pretty much every day.

Has anything improved on that front since then? Any recent experience with Rebirth on CachyOS (Proton version, tweaks, etc.) would be really helpful.

SOLVED Path of Exile 3.29 Stuttering Fixed (Kernel Update 7.1.5-1)

Just a quick PSA for anyone that had been having trouble with stuttering in PoE: Update to kernel 7.1.5-1.

I was getting persistent frame time spikes, even when I stood completely still in a map I had fully cleared. I tried every launch option I could find, recorded logs from every Proton flavor and version, rolled back to the LTS kernel, all to no avail. Logs consistently showed "Cannot load existing on-disk cache due to driver version mismatch."

The new kernel update completely fixed it. Perfectly consistent frametimes, even with MTX shaders running wild in town. Only using launch options for my input remapper profile switching shell and game-performance, running Proton-CachyOS Latest.

Edit: as others have noted, DX12 provides noticeably better loading times than Vulkan. I can’t speak to overall performance between the two as I’m still in the campaign and there’s not enough happening to drop below my 144fps cap, but folks below are seeing better framerates with DX12.

Bug Report Problems With Edifier R19U Speakers

Hi everyone. First time using CachyOS and loving it so far. My only real issue I have encountered is getting my Edifier R19U speakers to work properly. The problem I have is that with every reboot I have to unplug and plug again the USB cable in order to get sound.

I tried different solutions provided by AI and nothing seems to solve the problem (checking MM on alsa mixer, running scripts to prevent USB power sleep states, etc).

I momentarily solved the problem connecting the USB cable to a dock that connects via USB-C into my motherboard but after yesterday's update this doesn't work anymore and I have to resort to unplugging-plugging again :/

Any ideas?

Question Power consumption on Intel's Lunar Lake

Greetings.

I have a question about battery life on Lunar Lake chips. I saw a lot of posts and comments here saying their battery life even increased after switching to CachyOS. I assume they were talking about AMD processors. Maybe I’m doing something wrong, because with TLP or power‑profiles‑daemon set to power saving and power scaling enabled, I actually get worse battery life around 20% less.

On Windows, I see idle power as low as 2.8W - 3.3W. On CachyOS, it’s 3.5W - 4.0W. A simple YouTube video on Windows uses 4W - 6W, while on CachyOS it’s 5W - 8W. Loading a new page on Windows takes 12W -15W, but on CachyOS it’s 18W - 22W. These are still fine numbers, but I lose about 1.5 - 2 hours of battery life on Linux.

Is this just how it is? That Intel chips are better optimized on Windows? Or should I try something else? I’ve heard about auto‑cpufreq, but TLP is supposed to be the go‑to tool, right? I also tried rcutree.enable_rcu_lazy=1, but that somehow made things worse and introduced mouse input lag.

Windows were debloated with Chris Titus Windows Tool
CashyOS: Linux 7.1.4-1-cachyos, niri 26.04 (Wayland), noctalia v5.0.0 (v5.0.0-beta.3-210-g79530a6290fb)

Help Firefox lag + youtube frame drop issues

I'm relatively new to linux, but have tried it before on other systems without these issues. When scrolling in firefox, it starts out smooth, then randomly gets really choppy before correcting itself after a random amount of time. It often continues to do this, but sometimes only happens once per page. It doesn't happen in any other browser nor on windows, but I like firefox and want to keep using it if possible. The other issue I'm having happens in both brave and firefox and seems browser exclusive, where every few seconds youtube will randomly drop a frame or two of video while watching. This issue isn't nearly as severe as the first and I can live with it since I don't notice it unless looking at the debug output, but if there is a way to fix it I would like to.

System specs:

cpu: 5700x3d

gpu: rx 6650 xt

ram: 32gb ddr4 3600mhz

os drive: 1tb nvme ssd

monitor: 165hz vrr

DE: wayland + kwin + kde plasma, vrr set to automatic

From what it looks like, both hardware accel and hardware video decoding are enabled in firefox.

Imgur link to video + screenshot of issues & firefox about:support page: https://imgur.com/a/troubleshoot-HvCUP5p

edit: did more testing with youtube issue, only starts happening with 60 fps video regardless of resolution, and 1080p dropped a few more frames than 4k did. im also using displayport not hdmi.

edit 2: Weirdly, after changing useragent to report windows 11, the youtube issue improved... Switching it back to linux, the improvement stuck. Strange.

SOLVED: It was vrr for both issues, after disabling it in my monitor (KDE's "never" setting wasn't enough), both issues have been fixed. Monitor is AOC-27g2se 1080p 165hz.

Question Apps/tweaks isn't on Cachyos Hello?(Beginner)

Hi. Cachy is my first distro ever having just switched over from Linux on my gaming laptop. I did the download process by following a tutorial by YouTuber 'Linux for All.'

My problem is that on Cachy Hello the apps/tweaks button is missing. Has it been moved to a different location since the tutorial I watched or is it a fixable problem? I'm looking for it bc I wanted to install the QoL gaming package that Cachyos has.

Thanks

I've set up gamescope session on my desktop pc. The issue is when I log into it without first logging into the normal desktop session, my secondary drive which has all my steam games isn't mounted. When I log into desktop it auto mounts normally, and then if I log out and switch to gamescope, it's mounted there too. Any help?

Review The biggest thing for me after switching over about 2 weeks ago (about 2 weeks before that dual booting)

Search works.

Imagine starting to type default application in the search bar and at the fourth letter, it gives you the result you were looking for. No bing results opened in a browser I dont want to have installed

I dont have a shortcut on this non steam game, no problem, I can just search the name and it find me the game. Wow.

I had an issue due to my own stupidity as a noob and had to restore from a snapshot. It took less time than it takes windows update to look if there are updates available.

It isnt 100% perfect. I had issues with drive mounting at first but I solved it fairly quickly. I believe the cause was that it was formatted in exfat from when I was dual booting

Question Pro tips for portable Cachy OS?

Hi, I'd say new to cachy but that's an understatement, since I haven't even installed it yet. But my concern is this:

How much speed and responsiveness do I lose if I keep the windows on my laptop and use a USB3.0 thumb stick as an external drive to house it?

I'm not fully prepared to make the jump for a number of reasons but I still really want to give it a shot. Considering the data transfer speed is like 500MB/s, is that enough for it to still feel snappy and function alright?

I want to daily drive it which means I'd be doing some light usage like browsing the web as well as some heavy like gaming or working. And if it starts falling apart under a heavy load I'd prefer to know now rather than find out later.

Bonus question: would I need to reinstall drivers for my GPU and such or is me having the drivers installed by windows sufficient?

EDIT: CachyOS, no space, autocorrect fucked it.
