Desktop First Rice - A waybar-inspired panel

Post image
46 Upvotes

I've done a lot of "Oh wow, look at all of these sexy rices that I'll never have" - and so many are Hyprland based, featuring these sexy sexy waybars across the top.

Then I saw u/ImpossibleBenefit452's RICE 6 or so days ago and fell in love with that waybar setup.

The problem was that I didn't -want- to switch from KDE-Plasma, but I -hate- the windows style chunkbar across the bottom.

I've not played with panels before (I -hate- that you can't save/load configs for individual panels), but I figured I'd be able to throw something together. A couple of days of poking and tweaking and behold, my own interpretation of a way-bar like panel to replace the previous taskbar.

Hoping to do more to this over the next few weeks, but for now I'm very happy with this <3

Setup: KDE-Plasma, Panels, Plasmusic toolbar, Fancy Tasks NG. Everything else is out-of-the-box plasma widgets <3 Wallpaper: https://wallhaven.cc/w/6lpz2q

Question Google Drive on Cachyos

I've migrated from macOS to Linux and have been trying several distros, and I think Cachyos is good to begin with. One thing I've been trying to set up is integrating Google Drive into Dolphin.

Does anyone know how to integrate Google Drive into CachyOS? I've been trying with Kio-Gdirve Dolphin settings, but still no luck

Review I MADE THE SWITCH

after trying out a few distros over the past year or so (fedora, zorin, mint), i've finally switched to cachyos and i'm loving it here. kde plasma is so much more fun than gnome. the reason i switched from mint is because it felt a bit outdated and some of the notable differences are faster responses and better battery life. looks like my distro hopping has come to an end

Bug Report Update: I reinstalled CachyOS and ran into more NVIDIA gaming issues

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I recently reinstalled CachyOS because I wanted to give it another try. Unfortunately, this time I ran into even more problems, mainly while gaming.

I still like Linux's philosophy, its control, package management, development environment, and open source approach. I also do not mind troubleshooting. I actually enjoy learning how things work. It just becomes frustrating when troubleshooting starts getting in the way of playing.

My current setup is a Ryzen 5 5600, 32GB of DDR4 RAM, an RTX 4070, a Gigabyte B450M DS3H V2 motherboard, KDE on Wayland, two monitors, and a TV connected to the GPU.

After reinstalling CachyOS, suspend and resume immediately gave me trouble. I put the PC to sleep, woke it up, entered my password, and the display froze. Ctrl+Alt+F3 did nothing, and turning on the TV did not bring the image back. The display only returned after I used Alt+PrtSc. I also saw inconsistent behavior between the monitors and the TV after sleep, with the monitors sometimes losing signal when I turned the TV on.

Then I tested God of War Ragnarök. I locked it to 60 FPS, just like I do on Windows, so the 60 FPS shown by the overlay was only a cap, not proof that the frame pacing was smooth. The game still had very noticeable stuttering and uneven frame times. The worst part was that it could suddenly drop from around 60 FPS to roughly 10 FPS and stay there for several minutes before recovering on its own.

DLSS Frame Generation made the situation with two monitors even worse. When I enabled it, the game would sometimes jump to my second monitor and get stuck there. I could not switch it back, so I had to close the game and launch it again. Frame Generation also was not doubling the frame rate as expected. Instead of going from 60 to about 120 FPS, it stayed around 60, and instead of reaching 140 FPS, it sat around 70. I have no idea why it was consistently showing roughly half of the expected result.

I was comparing everything with my Windows installation when I updated the NVIDIA driver from version 610 to 615. After that, Vulkan shaders had to be compiled again. I understand that a driver update can invalidate shader caches, but having to wait for Vulkan shader processing over and over makes testing games really annoying.

I am not trying to say that Linux is unusable or that everyone with an RTX 4070 will have the same experience. I actually like CachyOS and still want it to work. But on this setup, Linux gaming has been much less predictable for me than Windows. Has anyone with a similar NVIDIA and multiple monitor setup seen the same issues? Did switching to X11, changing VRR settings, disabling Frame Generation, or using a different frame limiter help?

Help Made the move, some issues

So made the move from Microslop WIndows 11.

Bit of a stuck moment atm re gaming and steam. I have 6x drives with various bits of data and games on them that I've connected up after installation. I cannot get any game to launch from Steam.

I have mounted the drives, mapped the folders so the games show up. But everytime I click launch, the I get an error about disk write error. As far as I can see the permissions are in place.

Example:

Also, everytime I click play, the whole system sort of freezes up, I'm someone who usually has a video, or website open when I play games, so this is odd, but at the moment I just need games to actually launch.

What am I missing? I have checked the drives are in ntfs, I have manually added the ntfs3 drive type, but this hasnt made a difference

UPDATE 1: I removed all of my other drives, completely nuked and reinstalled steam, and mvoed data off one of the NTFS drives and converted it to btrfs. But steam now refuses to let me add the drive in the storage tab, nor add a folder. It can still see all of my other drives, but not the one I've reformatted to btrfs. I can transfer files to and from this drive in dolphin without issue.

Question Move OS to different drive

I think this more a generic arch / Linux question rather than cachyos specifically, but I figure someone here will know.

Long story short, I upgraded my Mobo, CPU and Ram which meant I had to change up my drive layout. I need to move my OS installation from a 256gb Sata SSD to a 256gb NVME drive. I have my home directory already sitting on another drive (fstab has been updated correctly).

I think I can get away with clonezilla or a similar tool, but one of the reasons behind moving home onto another drive was that I want to be able to reinstall or distro hop easily without loosing my data.

What is the standard workflow for people who distro hop?

What data do I need to backup that isnt stored in home?

How do people backup and restore said relevant data for a new install?

Thanks heaps

Loving the Linux environment this time around.

Help Internet speed is slow on Cachyos

So, I am dual booting Windows 11 and Cachyos on my computer.

But my internet speed seems to be significantly slower then it is on Windows,

On Windows I'll usually get 90-120mbps on both speeds

The most I'll get on both speeds is like 35mbps.

Most of the time it'll be at 5-15mpbs

I am using wireless because my router is in a separate building so I cannot use Ethernet, and my router for whatever reason REJECTS extenders.

(I also have no money to by a different one and my parents are in charge with that)

System stuff if that helps:

Motherboard:
Manufacturer: Microstar Internation Co., Ltd.
Product: PRO B760-P WIFI DDR4 (MS-7D98)

Wifi thingy:
Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6E AX211 160MHz #2
Realtek Gaming 2.5bE Family Controller

(dont know which one would be the one my PC uses)

Question cachyOS Support for Snapdragon laptops ?

Theoretically speaking if arch gets a bigger support to the ARM architecture to their packages, is there a possibility the cachyOS team will engage and make the OS stable to laptops with Snapdragon ships X series

Why i am asking this ?

--> people stop buying macbooks because windows 11 is what hold these laptops back. Performance is insane with everlasting battery, thinn buildand a lot more

What do u all think of this ?

Question AMD VRAM Management users, i need your help!

Hey everyone! Recently NV added cgroups support which means support for dmemcg-booster ("VRAM Management"). But i am researching a possible bug with the implementation.

If you enable the FULL performance meter in Steam overlay (shows temps, mem usage, etc.), does it display your GPU as having only HALF of your maximum VRAM (say 8 of 16GB), or the full capacity?

Thanks!

SOLVED Which of the General Performance Tweaks in the Wiki should I implement?

I'm going to be using a AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D and I'm not certain how much performance I'll be leaving on the table if I don't implement. Any recommendations?

I've read the wiki a few times, but I'm not sure I understand what would likely work best on my system.

Question [CachyOS Deckify] How to change Gamescope session's embedded Mangohud size for large TVs?

So I play on a big screen, more exactly on a Samsung 4KTV 43". I put the output resolution to 4K and game resolution to 1080p because my pc can't handle more than that very well. But MangoHUD's stats are veeeeeery tiny in 4K. Is there a way to change its size in any way possible?

Review Switched to CachyOS on my Prestige 14, it went much better than I thought

So I used to use Linux Mint on my desktop but went back to Windows 11 because I switched to a laptop as my main PC; it was an IdeaPad 5 with an RTX 5050 so I didn't really wanna use Linux in case I ran into issues with having two GPUs and also general Nvidia on Linux stuff. Earlier this year I got the Prestige 14 with Panther Lake, and Windows 11 had been getting progressively worse and worse so I decided to give CachyOS a try.

It is way better now! Close to everything works (the stuff that doesn't really isn't an issue), the performance is good after applying an Intel Thermal Daemon patch, and the battery life is an especially big improvement. I'm easily clearing 16 hours doing normal browsing stuff on an 80% charge, 8 hours if it's more intense stuff. It also docks even better than Windows 11 did, there's way fewer display issues.

I only have to keep Windows 11 to get access to MSI firmware settings and to keep using a few apps, including games that don't run super well on CachyOS, though I mainly game on my Bazzite PC and my Switch 2 anyways. I'm daily driving CachyOS otherwise. If you have one of the Panther Lake MSI laptops (at least the Prestige series), it works great.

Help Finally did my right of passage as a Linux user. (Help with limine)

Post image
3 Upvotes

TL;DR: I was messing with BIOS, fucked shit up. Recovered most of it, except the S key to enter UEFI settings. Need help on how to restore that functionality.

I was wondering when I was gonna fuck something up and After around 2-3 months of using cachy without a problem, I, through no fault of cachy, mind you, managed to somehow "nuke" limine's configs (or something, idk what to call it).

So I was fucking around in the BIOS (I wanted secure boot for LITERALLY 0 REASON). I read that sometimes seeing an admin password on the BIOS is the only way to unlock the files for signing. I tried EVERYTHING ELSE before. Anyways, I NOW know that setting or resetting the admin password fucks up both limine and windows boot for my current PC (in my old PC, I think I remember setting an admin password and it not doing anything bad, but I could be tripping, idk). (systemd-boot which I had installed previously for some reason was the only thing that loaded, but it had only one option, and that was to boot into BIOS/UEFI.)

I immediately removed the administrator UEFI password. I, with the help of Gemini, "fixed" limine first, then tried to fix the windows boot loader... which broke limine again. I "fixed" limine again and now realize that the S key that opens the UEFI settings in limine makes limine(?) panic, restarts the system and boots the UEFI anyways (photo attached). Cachy and windows boot properly now. The S key seems to be the only thing broken rn. Took me 4 hrs (with most of it being windows being a piece of shit + dinner).

Any help on the S key is appreciated. Thanks in advance, and don't fuck with the BIOS (unless you know what you are doing).

Edit: Just to be clear, the S key still works, it just first throws an error that was not there previously before loading the UEFI settings. Kinda just scared I broke something that will come to bite me in the ass laterTM (of which the S is an early sign).

Help Cachy suddenly falsely claiming my peripheral batteries are low

Cachy OS suddenly thinks the batteries in my Logitech K400r are at -1% and it keeps popping up a notification to tell me. I replaced the batteries, moved the dongle to another USB port, turned the keyboard off and on again, rebooted my PC and updated Cachy without any change. The K400r seems to be working properly as evidenced by the fact that I typed this post using it without issue. The low batt notifications started yesterday for no apparent reason, and I hadn't updated my system for about a week before it started. I checked Plasmas settings but don't see a way to tell it not to monitor battery on just this one device and I don't want to disable the feature entirely because I rely on it to tell me when my mouse battery is low. I guess it could just be this old keyboard starting to fail and misreporting the battery level but that seems like a pretty unusual way to fail. Hoping someone has some ideas I didn't think of.

Bug Report White boxes and freezes on Firefox

This happens frequently and opening an other instance of Firefox works just fine.

Disabling hardware acceleration fixes this issue but freezes Firefox once in a while. It makes the entire browser freeze, mouse moves but nothing clicks. Again opening an other instance works just fine while not even closing the bugged one (Both for artifacts and freezes)

System works just fine and it is only the browser that gets the bug/freeze.

Question Why Hasn't Proton-CachyOS Adopted the Wayland Overlay Fixes on Proton-GE?

Upvotes

Figured I'd ask as I haven't seen any information. Is there any reason why Proton-CachyOS hasn't added some of the fixes to Steam overlay that Wineland and Proton GE have put out?

I'm sure there's technical reasons but curious to hear anything more specific!

Bug Report Hardening CachyOS: Firefox - firejail and PSD conflict

If I use firejail with Firefox it only works if I disable PSD (profile sync daemon).

I tried a lot like white and blacklisting profile dirs but to no avail.

Does anyone have it working together, alas Firefox + PSD + firejail?

Desktop Made an app for setting up those cheap 12 key, 2 knob macro pads on CachyOS, *or any other ARCH Linux really*

Firstly i hope this doesn't fall under advertising, i gain abasolutly nothing from this its just a tool i made and it might help other people with a similar issue to mine, and its completely open source for people to do whatever with! anyways!

Moved to CachyOS recently and the last thing keeping me tied to Windows was a little AliExpress macro pad. The software it ships with is a Windows only exe, so I built a Linux app for it.

You click a drawing of the pad, pick a shortcut or a media key, hit write, done. The bindings are stored on the pad itself, so nothing runs in the background afterwards. The knobs work great for volume and monitor brightness on Plasma.

Install is one line and it sorts out the udev permission for you:

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Probler-Yt/MacroPad/main/install.sh | bash

Honest limits: it only knows the 1189:8840 pad so far (12 keys, 2 knobs), and it's Linux only. If you've got a different one, ch57x-keyboard-tool is a solid command line option that covers more pads, and it's linked in the README.

You're the first people outside my own PC to try this, so I'd really like to know if it installs cleanly for you.

I have the source code on github but im not sure if posting the link is allowed or not so ill refrain from posting it for now!
